The Enterprise Mine Project (EMP) is being developed by Mount IsaMines Limited as the future source of copper ore at the Mt Isa miningand processing complex. Environmental engineering is one of the majortechnical challenges facing the project because of the depth of theorebodies, high virgin rock temperatures and hot ambient surfacetemperatures in summer. This paper discusses the engineering principles adopted by EMP to manage the risks associated with working in these adverse thermal conditions.

At the Nikkel og Olivin nickel mine near Narvik, Norway, Outokumpu has been the operator since 1993. The mine was opened in 1989 and in 1992 Outokumpu commenced operations to secure concentrate deliveries to Harjavalta's nickel smelter in Finland. Annual production is about 740 000 tonnes of nickel ore grading 0.5 per cent Ni, about 25 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate and about 2800 tonnes of nickel metal. All production comes from underground operations which makes Nikkel og Olivin AS perhaps the lowest grade underground nickel mine in the world today. Production is currently from one of two orebodies, which is known as the Western orebody. The Eastern orebody was worked out by 1995. During Outokumpu's operational period the Western orebody has been delineated and taken to production. The underground exploration and definition drilling involved about 15 000 in of diamond drilling, which was carried out during a nine-month period. Following this a feasibility study was undertaken and production commenced. Improvements were made to the mining methods. Previously the mine utilised open pit equipment underground and this resulted in an enormous amount of additional tunnelling. Grade control and ore delineation were previously based on sparse diamond drilling and all geological information was processed manually. The improvements included the use of underground sludge drilling to increase the amount of geological information, the of a new computer system for grade control and mine planning, new automated underground longhole drilling equipment and the of underground mining equipment which reduced the size of the drives. These changes produced a marked increase in the efficiency of the underground Mine.

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Copper was first produced in Australia in 1844, at the Kapunda Mine in South Australia, and, by 18i>0, production exceeded 2,000 tons of copper a year. Output increased ,steadily, reaching a peak of 14,00Qo tons a year in 1867 and 1868, when the Burra Burra and Kapunda Mines in South Australia and the Peak Downs Moine at Clermont, Queensland, were at the height of their production. At this period, Australian copper formed a considerable percentage of the world's supply, its output equalling, for a short time, that of the United States. Production declined to between 3,000 and 4,000 tons a year after the closing of' these three mines between 18717 and 1879, and, at this stage, the Australian output came chiefly from the Wallatoo and Moonta mines in South Australia. About 19000, it began to rise again, with the extension of the railway to the copper fields of Chillagoe and Cloncurry, and, between 1905 and 1912, was at its greatest, with a maximum of 47,774 tons of copper in 1912. During this period, Australia contributed 4,7 per cent. of the world's annual production, and ranked among the six major copper-producing countries of the world (Table 1).

In December 2004 Phu Bia Mining Ltd commissioned Ausenco International Limited to conduct a feasibility study for its Phu Kham copper-gold project located in Laos. The feasibility study for a mining and processing operation treating 12 Mtpa of ore averaging 0.56 per cent copper and 0.25 g/t gold to produce an anticipated annual average 200 000 t of concentrate containing 25 per cent copper was completed in early 2006. The plant design incorporates a single processing line and includes a gyratory crusher, overland conveyor, coarse ore stockpile, SAG and ball mill grinding circuit, flotation circuit including regrind and three stages of cleaning, concentrate dewatering and concentrate load-out facilities. The Phu Kham copper-gold mineralisation comprises two principal styles: stockwork-disseminated and banded-massive sulfide within skarn limits. Primary copper in both mineralisation styles occurs as chalcopyrite and secondary copper sulfide minerals. Skarn includes the copper and gold mineralisation contained in pyrite, silicate, magnetite and haematite skarns, and in quartz-pyrite altered sediments. Both the stockwork-disseminated and banded-massive sulfide ores contain relatively high proportions of pyrite relative to the copper and gold mineralisation. Thus, the flotation metallurgy of the Phu Kham orebody is characterised by the need to reject a high proportion of the pyrite during differential flotation to yield a concentrate grade of approximately 25 per cent copper. The rejection of pyrite is accompanied by the rejection of some copper and gold and can result in modest metallurgical recovery. Consequently, the greater the pyrite content, the lower the expected copper and gold recoveries. The relative pyrite content is expressed on the basis of sulfur:copper ratio. For Phu Kham ores, the sulfur:copper ratios are in the range eight to 14 on a blended annual basis, but can be greater than 20 in the skarn components. Higher grades of copper and gold are also present in the skarn mineralisation. The design concepts for the concentrator were influenced by the need to provide a low capital cost approach for the project due to the relatively low grade of the ore and the modest metallurgical recovery. The concepts used to minimise capital cost whilst retaining operating and maintenance flexibility are discussed, together with the metallurgical challenges imposed by the high pyrite mineralisation.

In this paper, the author briefly introduces the resource characteristics of Chinese iron ore, as well as the present increasing market demand for iron concentrate. The SHP-3200 wet high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS) is used to separate complicated weak-magnetic iron ores being composed of specularite, limonite and siderite in Jiuquan Iron and Steel (Group) Co Ltd. Some technologies have been used to improve SHP-3200 HIMS, including modifying the angle of magnetic polar from 90¦ to 83¦, cooling the exciting coils by oil instead of air, adding reverse-washing equipment to wash off magnetic particles and adjusting the tooth-space of the matrix from 5.0 mm to 3.5 mm or 2.5 mm to enhance the recovery of fine particles. It is still difficult to meet the requirement for recovering more difficultly separated iron and the demands for high-grade concentrate of iron. In order to improve the recovery of difficult-separated iron, the film-magnetic separation technique is applied into the HIMS and a new LY matrix is designed to form magnetic gradient vertically. A flowing-film feeder is also added and the feed mouth is modified to make a slurry flow formed in the form of film along the wall of matrix. The microstructure and dissemination character of the mineral particles is studied, and the specific susceptibility of the primary minerals is measured. Then the distributive characteristics of a magnetic field for the separator with film-magnetic technique and the motion of particles in the process of separation are all analysed. By introducing the film-magnetic separation technique to SHP-Φ700 HIMS, the recovery of iron can be raised from 69.45 per cent to 76.07 - 78.96 per cent with the similar grade of concentrates of iron. Such an increase of 9.51 per cent in the recovery also shows that it is feasible for such film-magnetic separation technique to be applied into HIMS.

Nickel WestÆs Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter operates three Peirce-Smith converters, each processing 110 tonnes of matte per charge. The vessels are lined with chrome-magnesia refractory with a mouth traditionally constructed from steel liner plates, protected with cast refractory. Mouth refractory is damaged by molten material and the action of cleaning solid buildup off the mouth. Once damage has accumulated, the mouth must be frequently maintained with hot refractory gunning or a mouth leak may occur. Such a leak requires a 32 hour repair period. A converter mouth redesign program was undertaken with the aim of reducing the rate of mouth damage during operation, eliminating mouth leaks and shortening mouth replacement times during vessel rebuild periods. An overview of the redesign process and operational performance is contained herein.

In surface mining, studies of the kinematics of blasted rocks using high speed film/video image analysis have allowed the estimation of the starting time, direction and magnitude of visible movement of fixed sections of the free face. Horizontal displacement versus time plots from discrete targets at the face generally report changes in slope over very small time intervals. These changes indicate step increases in velocity due to the action of explosive gases. In practice, the onset of rock mass movement, different to localised spalling, has been associated with a response time which exceeds the combined times of detonation, propagation and reflection of stress waves. This time is referred to as minimum response or burden movement time. As an engineering index, burden movement time has been used to provide guidelines for the selection of inter-hole and inter-row delay sequences in production blasting. With respect to improving breakage and fragmentation, it has been demonstrated that the delay interval between adjacent explosive charges should be less than the expected burden movement time. Similarly to reduce confinement between rows, delay intervals should exceed the expected burden movement time. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM) is a modelling framework that dynamically links an ideal and non-ideal explosives detonation code to a geomechanical rock model. This blast simulation tool is aimed at analysing the role played by different explosive formulations in fragmenting and/or damaging various rock types under different degrees of confinement. In the current framework, the rock behaviour under extremely high pressures and loading rates is calibrated from shock tests and the role of the explosive in fracture growth is accounted for and assumes a compressible fluid flowing through the explicit fracture network. The model is being developed as part of an international collaborative research project funded by a consortium of companies comprised of explosive and equipment suppliers and major mining houses. As part of the development and validation of the HSBM project, data from literature addressing the kinematics of the rock mass (ie burden displacement, face velocities and response times) has been collated and used to evaluate the current version of the code. A series of numerical experiments have been conducted with the view to: evaluate the response of the rock mass to changes in burden distance given by the impact of both stress waves and radial gas flow pressure;compare the modelling outcomes in terms of displacement, response time and face velocities to documented field observations; andcompare stress induced and stress/gas induced modes in terms of burden displacement outcomes. Results from these experiments have shown that in its current form the model is able to capture the trends observed and measured in practice. This is with respect to the simulation of burden displacement, response time and average face velocities for different geometries and charging conditions. The experiments have served as consistency checks which form part of an ongoing and comprehensive evaluation and validation of the HSBM code also aimed at addressing some of its current limitations.

Australia is the Western world's largest producer of alumina, supplying one third of total needs. Western Australia's South-West has the greatest concentration of alumina production in the world, with a current annual production rate in the region of 6.8 million tonnes per annum, over 20 per cent of the total supplied to market economies. The value of this production in 1989-90 was 2.34 billion dollars, a very significant contribution to the economy of the State (1). This is despite the fact that the bauxite from the Darling Range is the lowest grade that has ever been commercially exploited, and despite the geographical isolation of the region. It is therefore of great importance to the National and State economies that this industry retain its competitive edge, particularly in the current times of economic downturn. One essential ingredient of this competetiveness is technology and innovation, which can be assured by the committment of the industry to an active program of Research and Development, with support from the public sector as Appropriate.

Wire ropes are one of the most heavily used components in a dragline. They are subjected to harsh conditions during the regular usage of a dragline in a mining operation. Hoist ropes are subjected to fatigue due to the cyclic nature of load handling as well as due to rope bending over the sheaves and the drum under load. This leads to wire breaks due to fatigue. Accumulation of a number of wire breaks close to each other can have a detrimental effect on the rope. Furthermore, to allow for the increasing demand for higher load capacity coupled with the inconvenience of having very large ropes, the factor of safety is often compromised, which increases the wear rate. Drag ropes are also subjected to heavy loads. More importantly, they are allowed to drag along the rough mine surface subjecting them to external physical abrasion. This makes the life of drag ropes one of the lowest among those used in a dragline. Suspension and IBS ropes are relatively uniformly loaded during their regular usage although they need to withstand dynamic load cycles as well as bending. Hence they tend to last for a number of years on average. The paper analyses the wear types and their severity of each of these rope applications, and suggests methods to determine rope wear rates and the resulting rope life. The paper further gives suggestions for good operating and maintenance practice that can extend the rope life and help reduce the large expenditure associated with every major rope change in a dragline.

A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

Bolting forms a prestressed elastic layer of rock which is capable of supporting loads at right angles to the bolted surface. Investigations on rock bolting made with a number of different models give rise to empirical and theoretical prin- ciples for the formation and action of the layer. In the models, flat and arched layers of many materials were used simulating rock conditions ranging from closely interlocked blocks to fragments of various shapes. Results of observations made in the underground works of the Snowy Mountains Scheme are related to the mode of action of bolted surface layers of rock. There is abundant experimental, theoretical and practical explanation for the well-demonstrated capability of bolting as a means of rock support.

The B.R.G.M., through international experience gained over many years, has become very skilled in alluvial prospection, particularly for diamonds. The research laboratories within the B.R.G.M. have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment,. some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and -its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consider- ation of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of "mineral-geochemistry", and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry. Reliable predictions of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a final void are vital if mine operators propose to decommission final voids in open cut mining operations. The catchments feeding final voids typically comprise a large proportion of coal placed or re-shaped spoil piles. Spoil piles from open cut coal mining operations have distinctive hydrological characteristics, which result in unique run-off behaviour. There is a need to understand the nature of spoil hydrology processes in order to predict the long-term hydrological behaviour and water quality responses of such systems. Preliminary estimates indicate that it may take 20 or more years for a void to flood. It is impractical for mine owners and operators to wait until long-term hydrological and water quality conditions have been established in a void, before reaching agreement with regulators about mine closure conditions. Reliable simulation of the long-term water quality and water level fluctuations in a void are therefore. The adoption of an agreed modelling approach and sharing of results from field data programs could result in the establishment of a database that could be used, with regulatory approval, for assigning parameter values, without the need for a specific data collection program for every individual void. Industry and regulators should agree on the model adopted for predicting post-closure behaviour of spoil/void systems. This will require reliable, robust methods for field data collection. This paper describes the field monitoring, data collection, model preparation and simulations undertaken over a three year period for Australian Coal Association Research Projects (ACARP) Project C7007. It presents the findings of that research, and provides comment on aspects of the project that were undertaken well and on aspects that could have been done better. Limited data is presented in this paper due to confidentiality arrangements with the relevant mine sites.

The underlying principles of dewatering theory have recently achieved considerable practical application in the washing and dewatering of alumina trihydrate in Bayer plants. In particular, the influence on residual cake moisture contents of trace amounts of surfactant added to the wash water reveals that significant energy savings can be achieved. The influence of organic compounds produced by the caustic extraction of bauxite in the Bayer process is shown to be significant. These humic species reduce the cake permeability and the effectiveness of certain surfactants in dewatering operations.

The New Guinea Mobile Belt is the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny (Dow and Sukamto, 1984), which consists of a complex zone ofupthrusted and accreted, regionally metamorphosed geosynclinal sediments and volcanics of Mesozoic to Eocene age and the overlying sediments. On the northern margin of this accreted terrane, formed an Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The North New Guinea Basin formed during the Upper Oligocene on the accreted margin. The depositional history of this basin is complicated by major crustal movements during the Upper Miocene to Holocene. During the Middle to Upper Miocene two magmatic arcs were emplaced. The northern magmatic arc is in part, spatically and genetically related to the Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The Maramuni-Utawa Magmatic Arc (southern) is a result of the Oligocene accretion and regional metamorphism. Coincident witt these magmatic arcs are belts of mineralization containing porphyry Cu-Au, epithermal/hydrothermal Au, Ag + Cu-Pb-Zn, exhalative Cu-Pb-Zn + Ag-Au, lateritic Ni-Cr-Co + PGE and alluvial Au, PGE, Cr occurrences and deposits. An intergrated tectonic model is presented for these and other data for the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny.

Solid Energy New Zealand is developing an extension of its Rotowaro open cast coal mine near Huntly. This large 8 year, 11 million tonne opencast coal mine, referred to as the Awaroa Project, is fundamental to Solid Energy's medium term business strategy and meets its open pit coal resource needs while further resources are developed for the long term. Equally importantly the project is also fundamental to meeting New Zealand's energy requirements in the face of growing demands, a dwindling gas resource, and dry winters creating hydropower shortages. This project with its national significance in the current energy climate, its significance to Solid Energy as a business and its significant size has been consented against a backdrop of criticism of the Resource Management Act and the introduction of the 2003 amendment to the Act. As is common practice for this type of project Solid Energy conducted a significant technical programme in order to complete a comprehensive assessment of environmental effects. Solid Energy also has an active programme of community and interested party consultation and this programme formed the basis for project based consultation with local residents, regulatory bodies and iwi. As a result of the approach taken the environmental effects of the project were shown to be no more than minor and Environment Waikato considered that the project should be processed under the limited notification provisions of the RMA amendment. The project was processed under RMA quickly and efficiently and consents were granted within 6 months of lodgement. The RMA and its 2003 amendment provided a good framework for dealing with this project and did not impede the process of development of this important energy resource.
