As a result of cheap Maui gas and plentiful hydro-electricity, over the past few decades New Zealand has enjoyed some of the cheapest energy of any OECD country. The situation is changing; at best we are facing some radical changes in energy use, at worst we are facing a crisis resulting from the following:   Cause 1: Maui gas will be exhausted by 2012. Distorted pricing and supply contracts; resulted in Huntly Power Station, a coal mine mouth generator running on 70 per cent Maui gas until very recently!   Cause 2: Investment in new generating capacity (and transmission) is woefully inadequate; as a result hydro lake levels are being continually pushed to the limits.   Cause 3: Distorted thinking is everywhere, for example; æWe will find more cheap gasÆ. æGas is clean û coal is dirtyÆ. Hot air  û ægreen alternatives such as wind generation will save usÆ. æNo NuclearÆ. The outcomes of the distorted thinking will be price increases, then shortages (there is nothing like "black-outs" to focus national thinking) and finally recession.   But what can NZ do? - Mine Coal. Coal jump-started the industrial revolution, it can provide the transition to post-gas and oil. NZ has the second highest reserves of coal per capita in the world, yet we use less that any other country with significant coal reserves. Our exports of our best coal have increased threefold, yet out own consumption has remained static at about 1-1.5 Mtpa for the last 30 years. Our coal is NZ owned and inexpensive relative to other energy sources, even allowing for infrastructure and environmental costs.   What can we do? We as mining professionals can promote informed responsible development and investment in the country's mining and energy business. We can galvanise public opinion on issues such as æunbundlingÆ our entire energy chain from mine-to generator-through transmission, even if the nuclear issue has to wait! With oil above US$70/bbl substitution is feasible. For individuals, there is always solar!

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. SPOT imagery acquired in May 1986 of the areas that include the Dugald River lead-zinc lode, northwest Queensland, Australia and the Ngwenalekau copper deposit, Botswana has been evaluated and compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery of the same areas. The data have been processed using band combinations, band ratioing, principal components analysis and classificatory techniques and the outputs compared with those of geobotanical, geochemical and biogeochemical data as well as geological information. For both study areas the image processing techniques cited have successfully distinguished discrete vegetation associations related to discrete surficial and bedrock geological units; and, notwithstanding the sharp contrasts between the nature of the geobotanical anomalies that in both areas occur over mineralised bedrock in Proterozoic sedimentary sequences, they have successfully identified the areas of anomalous vegetation over the mineral deposits. Greater vegetational and geological detail is revealed than on outputs generated from LANDSAT MSS data [see Cole, 1977, 1982(a) and (b)]. The additional information yielded by SPOT imagery compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery results from its greater spatial resolution - 20 metres as against 79 metres - and from ti fact that the three SPOT MSS spectral bands - 0.50 0.59um, 0.615-0.68um and 0.79-0.89um - respectivelc cover those sections of the electro-magnetic spectrum in which leaf pigments, notably chlorophyll, absorption for photosynthesis and leaf cell structure strongly influence reflectance. This accords opportunities for the detection of reflectance aberrations caused by stress due to drought and/or metal toxicity as well as for the identification of anomalous vegetation communities of moderate sizr These cannot be accurately discriminated on LANDSA I MSS imagery on which only very large geobotanical anomalies like that over the Lady Annie phosphate deposit in northwest Queensland [Cole, 1977, 1984; Cole and Owen-Jones, 19771 can be detected.

The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

The Porphyry Gold Mine (150km NE of Kalgoorlie) was reopened in November 1983 with production commencing in April 1984. Original reserves quoted for the open pit were 822000 tonnes at 5.2 g/t Au based on wide spaced diamond drill holes. Close spaced grade control drilling has revealed some loss of tonnage and a significantly lower grade. In the area of the pit mined to 30 June 1985 this grade control reserve estimate contained 67% of the gold in the original ore reserve with the grade being 19% lower. It is anticipated that the final grade control reserve estimate will contain around 80-85% of the gold contained in the original reserve. There has been close agreement between the Mill Head grade (4.19 g/t Au) and the grade control predicted grade (4.2 g/t Au) confirming that dilution is not a major problem. After initial poor agreement (attributed to "lock-up" in the circuit) the bullion calculated head grade steadied out at 93% of the grade control prediction. This difference is considered to represent the geostatistical bias in the drill hole/crushed rock sampling. Gold recovery has been in the range 93-95% (compared with bullion calculated grade). The net result is that the recovered grade of ore mined to 30 June 1985 is 70% of the original ore reserve grade.

Drill and blast mining techniques are used to mine coal outburst prone and high gas content coals in Australia. As the risk of an outburst is increased in high gas content coal, it is considered that drill and blast is the safest way to mine coals that refuse to yield gas even after considerable gas drainage efforts. The availability of suitable explosives for drill and blast in Australia is dependent on the æBuxtonÆ tests. With the diminished coal operations in England, the type and supply of such explosives is tenuous, causing significant disruption to the production of coal in some mines. In an attempt to free up the availability of explosives a review of the methods used for the testing of coal mine explosives was undertaken to ascertain the scientific basis for these tests. It was hoped that this comparison would allow regulators to have the confidence in explosives that had been tested elsewhere. Although this was not achieved, it has spawned a major research project that aims to better understand the mechanisms involved so that either confirmation of the current testing regime can be achieved or more suitable and scientifically based tests can be adopted. This paper looks at the ongoing research program investigating the parameters that are involved with methane ignitions from explosives. By utilising high-speed data capture and processing the research project is trying to view an ignition as it happens to identify the mechanisms involved so that better explosives can be designed for the coal mining industry.

Eloise Copper Mine is situated 56 km east-southeast of Cloncurry, Queensland, Australia. The deposit was discovered by BHP Minerals in 1986 during follow up diamond drilling of EM anomalies associated with major aeromagnetic anomalies. The deposit is overlain by 60 m of Mesozoic cover. Amalg Resources NL commenced mining during 1995 by means of decline access and long hole-stoping. The total mineral resource comprised 1.77 million tonnes at 4.10 per cent Cu as at the end of June 2003. Proved and probable reserves are 930 000 tonnes at 3.97 per cent Cu. Mineralisation is hosted within a strongly foliated Proterozoic meta-sedimentary sequence comprising arenites and schists. The metasediment sequence also contains a coarse-grained amphibolite body possibly representing an early intrusion of gabbroic composition. Economic mineralisation characteristically occurs as a number of steeply plunging lenticular bodies with strike lengths of between 100 and 200 m and maximum widths approaching 25 m. The principal orebody, the Levuka (B) Lode, displays a down plunge extension exceeding 1000 m and is open at depth. Ore mineralogy is almost exclusively chalcopyrite with the principal gangue phases consisting of pyrrhotite + quartz + carbonate. A biotite + hornblende + magnetite assemblage represents locally intense mafic alteration of the metasedimentary host sequence. Magnetite is present in variable amounts and may be locally significant in some of the smaller satellite orebodies. Within the orebodies the sulfides display a range of textures from massive through to vein like. Sulfides commonly display brecciated textures at a range of scales. Post-mineralisation faulting has severely dislocated the orebodies, resulting in a complex arrangement of fault bounded ore blocks. These faults display considerable variability in regard to strike, dip and amount and direction of throw. A recent review of the fault system by means of large-scale structure underground mapping, re-interpretation of drill core and 3D modelling has led to a significant improvement in the understanding of these structures. A significant upgrade of the geological database has accompanied the structural review. The overall improved understanding has aided the mine design processes with particular regard to decline and access development and pillar location. This has also impacted on the design of drilling programs and exploration for additional satellite ore zones.

The Olympic Dam mining operation is some 520 kilometres NNW of Adelaide on the Roxby Downs Pastoral lease. The deposit containing copper, uranium, gold and silver was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). A joint venture was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and British Petroleum (BP, 49 per cent) for the development and exploitation of the deposit. WMC assumed 100 per cent ownership after acquiring BP's share in early-1993. Ore is won from a highly mechanised underground mining operation and processed to refined products. Current annual output from the mining of 3.0 Mt of ore is approximately 83 500 t of refined copper, 1400 t of uranium oxide, 750 kg of gold and 12 000 kg of silver. Conventional long hole, open stoping techniques are used to extract the production ore. Since stope production began in April 1988, full surveys and appraisals of stopes have been carried out to evaluate the integrity of the design and blasting techniques. This evaluation included the determination of the degree of dilution or non break that had occurred. Performance information also made it possible to re-design any adjacent stopes to retrieve remaining ore and conversely, avoid the chances of targeting backfilled material in the future. Performing stope surveys proved not only to be a time-consuming process but one fraught with access and line-of-sight problems. Occasionally it was not possible to obtain any stope survey data, and as was often the case with the mine pass system, rarely. In 1992 the sudden failure of the pillar between the fine ore and mullock passes and the subsequent delays to production, emphasised the need to effectively monitor pass wear. Initial information regarding the development of the Cavity Measurement System (CMS) prototype (Figure 1) indicated that it had the potential to solve these problems by the introduction of a remote scanning device into a cavity. Following a great deal of investigation, Olympic Dam Operations purchased the first CMS in Australia. This paper discusses its application for all underground void surveys and the procedures developed to manage both field and office requirements.

The Collinsville Coal Measures consist mainly of arenaceous sediments but indude eleven named coal seams. The Formation outcrops around the northern end of tbe Bowen Basin where it attains a thickness of 700 ft. in the Collinsville-Scottville area and overlies Lower Bowen Volcanies with angular unconformity. Most of the members in the Formation thicken basinwards. The regional dip is about 8 degrees. The Formation thins southwards and does not occur south of the Bowen River on the eastern flank. On the western flank it is represented by 60 ft. of barren sandstone at the limit of our mapping, 12 miles south of the Bowen River. Two seams are mined, the Bowen and the Blake; coal from the former produces high grade metallurgical coke, and the latter seam is mined for steaming coal. Where mined, the seams are about 20 ft. thick. The coals are of medium volatile bituminous rank and the lower coals are of higher rank than those above them.Reverse faults striking across the Coal Measures have been delineated and the existence of areas of intrusive rocks has been established. Intrusions rose up fault planes and, as felspar porphyry sills, selectively intruded coal seams, decimating reserves of coalavailable for mining. One sill, in the Blake Seam, attains a known thickness of 115 ft. Because the distribution and thickness of the sills is rarely predictable, density of drilling has been greater than in most coalfields.INTRODUCTIONThe assemblage of sediments occupying the northern portion of the Bowen Basin (Fig. 1) may be divided into four formations of Permian age:The Upper Coal Measures (U. Bowen)The Middle Bowen Marine Beds (M. Bowen)The Collinsville Coal Measures (M. Bowen)The Lower Bowen Volcanics (L. Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

Blasting has been the most frequently used method for rock breakage since black powder was first used to fragment rocks, more than two hundred years ago. This paper is an attempt to reassess standard design techniques used in blasting by providing an alternative approach to blast design. The new approach has been termed asymmetric blasting. Based on providing real time rock recognition through the capacity of measurement while drilling (MWD) techniques, asymmetric blasting is an approach to deal with rock properties as they occur in nature, ie randomly and asymmetrically spatially distributed. It is well accepted that performance of basic mining operations, such as excavation and crushing rely on a broken rock mass which has been pre conditioned by the blast. By pre conditioned we mean well fragmented, sufficiently loose and with adequate muckpile profile. These muckpile characteristics affect loading and hauling (Scott, 1996). The influence of blasting does not end there. Under the Mine to Mill paradigm, blasting has a significant leverage on downstream operations such as crushing and milling . There is a body of evidence that blasting affects mineral liberation (Djordjevic, N, 2001). Thus, the importance of blasting has increased from simply fragmenting and loosing the rock mass, to a broader role that encompasses many aspects of mining, which affects the cost of the end product. A new approach is proposed in this paper which facilitates this trend æto treat non-homogeneous media (rock mass) in a non-homogeneous manner (an asymmetrical pattern) in order to achieve an optimal result (in terms of muck-pile size distribution)Æ. It is postulated there are no logical reasons (besides the current lack of means to infer rock mass properties in the blind zones of the bench and onsite precedents) for drilling a regular blast pattern over a rock mass that is inherently heterogeneous. Real and theoretical examples of such a method are presented.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. The Suurikuusikko gold deposit was discovered in 1987 in western Finnish Lapland, 54 km NNE from the town centre of KittilS in the volcanic belt of Central Lapland. It is hosted by tholeiitic basalts in a graphite-bearing albitite breccia. The ore is located in subvertical shear zones characterised by strong albitisation, carbonatisation and sulfidisation. The ore minerals consist of arsenopyrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bournonite and rutile. Small amounts of pyrrhotite, gersdorffite, jamesonite, bornite, gudmundite, tetrahedrite, stibnite, kermesite, berthierite and native Sb are also present. Gold occurs as invisible and as 1 - 2 ¦m size inclusions in arsenopyrite and pyrite, on their grain boundaries and in fractures. The average amount of gold leached by cyanide is 2.93 per cent. The æinvisibleÆ gold contents were studied in pyrite and arsenopyrite by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) at CANMET/ MTL. Gold element distribution images show zoned patterns both in pyrite and arsenopyrite. SIMS analyses range from 343 to 55 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 217 ppm down to 0.32 ppm (detection limit 478 ppb) Au in pyrite. EPMA results range from 939 to below the detection limit 24 ppm Au in arsenopyrite and from 267 ppm to below 22 ppm Au in pyrite. Recovery of the refractory gold ore was studied using grinding, flotation, bio-oxidation and cyanidation tests. A sulfide bulk concentrate containing 40 ppm Au was obtained by flotation at 90 per cent recovery (As content 5.5 per cent, S content 22 per cent, and mass recovery 15 per cent). The grinding fineness in flotation was P80 -100 to 120 ¦m. At the original fineness the cyanidation recovery from the concentrate was lower than ten per cent, after ultra-fine grinding P80 -10 to 2 ¦m the Au recovery was less than 17 per cent. After bio- oxidation, Au recovery of 95 per cent was obtained in carbon-in-leach (CIL). The bio-oxidation time was two weeks in laboratory test, but after regrinding the oxidation rate was faster and recovery of Au higher. However, the selected method for the mining to be started in summer 2008 is open pit mining and mineral processing methods sulfide flotation and pressure oxidation in an autoclave. The ore reserves were estimated 31 December 2007 as: Probable 18.2 Mt with 5.1 g/t Au, Indicated 5.4 Mt with 3.0 g/t Au and Inferred 10.8 Mt with 3.4 g/t Au. The production capacity will be 3000 t/day.

Differences between the long-term model (LTM) and mine geology system (MGS) grade control block-outs on a blast block scale can impose difficulties to planning crusher feed grade and tonnes on a monthly to weekly blend basis. Detailed geological input to short-term planning has been integral to improve the performance and reduce risk in six-week to three-month production schedules and local variability in tonnage and grades is often not accurately represented in the LTM. The challenge of producing to combined target specifications from different mine sites in an integrated mine to ship business has been reduced with the creation of blast blockout-based short-term model. These short-term blast block models (STBBM or STM) are robust predictive tools created for upcoming benches of current mining areas by firstly collecting data from the pit in the form of bench and face mapping and projecting the structure and stratigraphy down to the next bench. A wire-frame of the projected contacts based on material destination from production blockouts is created and then checked against the LTM. Blast block data from the bench above including assay results and material logging is extracted and validated according to the projected wire-frames (geozones). Individual blast blocks and a full block model are created for each bench production defined by the STP (bench plans). Data output from the STM is in a compatible format for import into scheduling specific software packages. Additional information is incorporated into the STM to allow querying of drill penetration rates, predicted powder factors, material hardness and feed type to further aid in the production planning process and cost forecasting. To date, reconciliation of the STM has been pleasing and certainly an improvement on the LTM, especially in areas where variability is higher due to geological complexity. Short-term predictions derived from in-pit geological observations allow mine planners to more confidently decide on mining block sizes and schedule tonnages and grades, reducing the risk component attached to developing production schedules based directly upon long-term orebody models and mine plans.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.
