A Study on Process Mineralogy and Mineral Processing of Complex Carbon-Bearing Cu-Pb-Co-Ni Multi-Metal Sulfide Ore by Bulk Flotation

The increase in the proportion of sulphide ore treated by the gold mining industry has led to generally higher oxygen requirements. Additions of pure oxygen, hydrogen peroxide and in some cases calcium peroxide, have been proposed as a means of satisfying the oxygen demand and overcoming the problems from reactive sulphides in the ore. Current oxidant addition options and practice are reviewed.Laboratory oxygen demand tests are reported for a suite of ores to show some of the effects of pH and preaeration.Laboratory leach tests at high and low dissolved oxygen levels are reported on two of the ores with higher oxygen demands, and the results are assessed in terms of gold leaching kinetics, ultimate gold extraction, and cyanide requirements.

This paper describes an ongoing study into the management systems developed by mining operations in Papua New Guinea to address particular public health issues in the workforce (primarily communicable and lifestyle diseases). The first stage of the study involves the analysis of the site health and safety management system documentation of three major mining operations in Papua New Guinea, producing a descriptive summary of each system. In the second stage of the study these summary descriptions are evaluated using a maturity model constructed through a detailed review of literature. Experience with the evaluation process is then used to refine the maturity model. The analysis performed in the study is used to develop a process for creating a maturity model for mine site health risk management based on a theoretical risk management framework, and refining it through empirical evaluations of the actual systems in place on site. Companies can use maturity models as a guide to organisational improvement, which in the context of the study will assist the operations in developing their systems for the management of health both in their workforce and in local communities.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

In Japan there exists a strong demand for mechanical excavation for tunnelling bacause the blasting method which produces much vibra- tions and noises is restricted in its applica- tion due to the fact that there can be many cases where tunnelling sites are located ad- jacent to residencial areas as a result of Japan's being a thickly inhabited country. Pressing demands for and deep interest in the mechanical excavation method have been shown by the circles concerned with reasons that it produces smooth cutting surface and causes less overcutting of profile as a result of the diffusion of NATM (New Austrian Tunnel- ling Method) in the recent years. This has caused a strong desire of the users to apply the conventional mechanical excavation method that has been used mainly for soft rock cutting also to the field of hard rock cutting. In order to meet such needs of the tunnel- ling industry, further research and development have been continued to have successfully real- ized the Boomtype Tunnelling Machine for Hard Rock.

This is a brief introduction of a sewer pipeline constructed with a pipe jacking method in combination with a 1 200 mm finished inner diameter tunnel boring machine developed for the first time in Japan. The pipeline is located under a national highway running through a densely built urban area and is 185.7 m long and 2.9 m to 3.7 m deep from the ground surface. The geological features along the pipeline show mostly slate and partly silt. The pipeline was constructed with a newly developed multi-application type tunnel boring machine equiped with a fluid transport system. The construction consisted of tunneling by a tunnel boring machine followed by pipe jacking operations. The excavated materials were dis- charged off the tunnel by a fluid transport System.

Roadheader, developed from coal cutting machines, is generally classified as a tunnel excavation machine for soft rocks in respect to excavation mechanism, machine structure, weight, engine output and so on. In recent tunnel works, however, there is an increasing demand for changing from blasting to mechanical excavation by roadheaders to avoid environmental problems such as noise and vibration. But there exist various difficulties in excavation of harder rocks by roadheaders. In order to explore the possibilities of roadheader excavation, we performed field and laboratory experiments. In the field experiment, roadheader model S-125 (Mitui Miike Machinery Co.,Ltd.) was tested for various rocks of wide range of hardness, and excavation capacity and wear of picks were measured. In the laboratory test, cutting performance of the picks was tested by our cutter testing machine. This report describes thr: of these experiments and discussions :n possibility of applying boom-type tunnelling machines to hard rock excavation based on these experimental data.

The design of most underground mining machines shows little evidence of regard for ergonomic principles and operator comfort. Likewise, efficiency and ease of operation often appear to have been given little consideration in machines where ruggedness and simplicity have tended to dictate the configuration. Improvements in productivity are amongst the benefits to be gained by a different approach to machine design. The paper describes the philosophy and features of a test bed Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle undergoing trials at Mount Isa Mines. This machine is the outcome of a Research and Development Programme conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Queensland and Mount Isa Mines Limited. The diesel powered test bed features an enclosed, air conditioned cabin, with a suspended operator's control station and electrically operated controls. An electronically controlled hydrostatic transmission incorporating wheel slip control, is another innovation. The performance and operator acceptance of the machine has led to adoption of most of the concepts in a new machine now being put into production.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

The recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates can be achieved in a number of ways using roasting and leaching procedures. The Sirosmelt system introduces a new approach to the recovery of gold from these materials using smelting procedures. Laboratory studies were carried out to establish procedures for operating the Sirosmelt system for recovery of gold and associated valuable elements from an ore containing 17.5 g/t gold and a concentrate containing 22 g/t gold as well as substantial copper levels. Copper, iron, lead and matte were evaluated as collecting phases for the gold. The ore smelting procedure recovered 80-90% of the gold whilst smelting concentrate gave 98-99% gold recovery.

Australia contains a variety of iron ores, differing in grade, chemistry, size distribution and genesis. While a proportion of this ore is used world-wide as blast furnace lump, much of the material mined is high grade fines, requiring agglomeration (usually sintering) before blast furnace reduction. Sintering studies initially concentrated on the production of ferrous material of high iron content, coarse size and sufficient cold strength. In recent years research involving pilot plant sintering, precise test procedures and mineralogical analyses has focussed on the additional sinter properties of hot strength and reducibility. Aspects of mineralogical studies applied to iron ore sintering are described.

To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

This paper describes the ENVIB software system, which has been developed in a menu-driven form to aid in the monitoring and assess- ment of vibration caused by routine blasting operations and for research and development projects. The paper gives an outline of the capabilities of the system by means of screen-dumps and a general descriptive commentary. Technical notes have been added where appropriate to further describe the system. The ENVIB system covers: I . Analysis of blast vibration results, and preparation of graphs and tables for control and estimation purposes. 2. Effects of atmospheric conditions and air vibration propagation. 3. Real-time acquisition and analysis of analogue blast vibration sig- nals directly from transducer equipment or from FM tapes. 4. Analysis of digital files on floppy disc or transferred via the serial port from blast monitoring equipment. 5. Transfer function calculation for structure response studies.

The high oas emissions which are associated with high production lonowall mining have provided a need to investigate the limitations and reouirements of the various gas control methods. The major relationships between oassiness and various other parameters are presented with computer analysis being adopted to assess the respective correlations. Some of the relationships are studied in detail with emphasis being placed on methods for overcomino the changes in conditions resulting from high production levels. The importance of the various drainage systems which can be adopted to combat high gassiness levels are analysed. Logical and necessary steps are also proposed for gassiness prediction and data monitoring as well as various combinations of gas drainage systems. The gassiness prediction methods which are discussed outline the need for a sound knowledge of the established worldwide methods together with a comprehensive study of the local mining and geological environment in order to develop a system which is adaptable to the changing conditions. This is particularly important in mines where high coal production levels are anticipated and the need for accurate gassiness relationships is essential.

We present plate tectonic reconstructions, showing that porphyry-type ore deposits are spatially and temporally linked to ridge subduction. A reconstruction of the Peruvian subduction system reveals an immediate metallogenic response to the arrival of the Nazca Ridge at the subduction trench, followed by southward migration of the zone of metallogenic activity due to the lateral migration of the zone of ridge subduction. A similar pattern is recognised in central Chile , where the spatio-temporal distribution of giant ore deposits coincides with the arrival of the Juan Fernandez hotspot chain at the subduction zone. We conclude that there is a spatial and temporal link between ridge subduction and ore deposit formation, with high metal fluxes concentrated in zones of ridge subduction. Thus, the recognition of tectonic patterns associated with ridge subduction can provide insights into predictive mineral discovery by enhancing our ability to predict the position of large mineral deposits in other modern and ancient orogens. Difficult ground conditions have plagued the underground operations at Mount Windarra since mining started in 1974.The ore at Mount Windarra consists of seven vertically dipping, sub vertically plunging ore shoots. The ore zone in which the shoots lie is characterised by moderate to heavy cleavage and the presence of serpentanite. The ore is known to extend to 1100 metres below surface.Long hole open stoping under cover of backfill has been used as the primary mining method at the mine, but its poor performance brought the mine near to closure in 1984. The mine had been closed from 1979 to 1980.

It is important to understand skarn-porphyry transitions in order to use exposed skarns to look for associated and potentially larger porphyries. For such purposes, a good start is to understand the transition between porphyry and skarn in known deposits. In this contribution, we report the transition at Antamina, Peru, where skarns occur in and around a Miocene complex comprised of more than seven porphyritic intrusions. There are three types of skarn-porphyry relationships. The earliest intrusive phase, P1A, contains both endoskarn and porphyry-style quartz veins with secondary biotite halos. The porphyry quartz veins and endoskarns formed at the same time. Locally, the intrusion contains only endoskarn without porphyry quartz veins and is surrounded by exoskarns in carbonate wall rocks. In the third scenario, later porphyry (P2) intruding into P1A porphyry and skarns related to P1A contains abundant granular quartz veins and secondary biotite alteration but does not have significant endoskarn. The granular quartz veins also extend into earlier P1A skarns. The scarcity of endoskarn associated with P2 is related to the supply of Ca. The earliest P1A intrusion intruded into carbonates that supplied abundant Ca, therefore both endoskarns and exoskarns formed. In contrast, where the wall rocks of the later P2 intrusion are P1A or skarn related to P1A, there was little free Ca, therefore only porphyry-style quartz veins formed.CITATION:Chang, Z, Mrozek, S A, Meinert, L D and Windle, S, 2015. The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.
