When ore is being selected from a regularised block model, a common procedure is to accept as ore any block whose iron content exceeds a cut-off value, and whose content in each contaminant analyte is below an appropriate cut-off value. This method defines a quadrant within the multidimensional analyte space, such that any block lying within the quadrant is accepted as ore and any block lying outside the quadrant is rejected as waste. The cut-off levels can be adjusted to maximise ore tonnage at a target grade (or analyte vector). When the method is applied to a project comprising multiple pits with systematically differing grades, it is found that ore tonnage at target grade is maximised if different cut-off quadrants are used for the different pits. This is apparently illogical, because it implies that an ore block from one pit may be accepted as ore, but an identical block from another pit is rejected as waste, even when ore from both pits is to be blended into the same product and there are no production cost differences between the pits. The paradox is an example of the ætheory of the second bestÆ: if there are multiple conditions for optimality and one condition is broken, then obeying the other conditions may not be the best policy. The problem lies with the quadrant cut-off method, which is shown to be inconsistent even for selecting ore from a single pit. A criterion that is inconsistent cannot be optimal. It is shown that a linear composite cut-off function provides maximum ore tonnage, and that a single composite cut-off criterion is consistent and optimal over multiple pits. Further, it is shown that a composite cut-off function not only maximises ore tonnage at a specified composition, but also can be used to select ore so as to maximise project value, if marginal costs and values are available.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2013. Water retention, water loss and delay in tailings storage rehabilitation are major challenges for many Coal Mines. Work by Stewart, Backer and Busch in the early 1980s suggested that there were improvements to be made in tailings dewatering and density by the addition of flocculant. This prompted ACARP, in cooperation with Bulga Coal Management (Xstrata), to initiate a research project investigating the impact of flocculant addition on tailings deposition density, water retention and the tendency for tailings to form surface crusts suitable for subsequent rehabilitation. A polyacrylamide-based flocculant (200 - 250 g/tds) was injected into the tailings line immediately prior to disposal into the impoundment area. The flocculated slurry rapidly released clear water and created a beach due to the immediate increase in deposition density. The deposition density increased from 35 per cent w/w to 61 per cent w/w solids within 24 hours and continued to increase to 75 per cent, seven days after treatment. The water capture at the tailings storage facility improved by more than 90 per cent; water which would otherwise be lost from the circuit through retention and evaporation. The impoundment capacity had nearly tripled due to the improvement in initial deposition density from 420 kg/m3 up to 1163 kg/m3. Four weeks after disposal surface crusts were forming on the storage facility, suggesting that there would be less delay between cessation and tailings storage rehabilitation.

The products from beneficiation present themselves at opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet numerous synergies exist in the preparation of coking coal and hematite iron ore products for their common export markets. Returning to the coal side of the business with Anglo Coal following a five-year sojourn in WA with Hamersley Iron, has provided the opportunity for comparing and contrasting some of the key synergies of the supply chains of both bulk commodities.Comparisons include consideration of things like: resource evaluation (especially quality aspects), run-of-mine handling and preparation, beneficiation, product handling and transportation, quality assurance and customer awareness, value-in-use and impacts on iron and steelmaking, and supply chain environmental aspects.Inherent within these are several other notable contrasts including: æseamsÆ and æorebodiesÆ, rocks and minerals, rejects and tailings, oxidation and weathering, suppliers and users, and marketing and purchasing, to name but a few.This paper covers some of the more interesting of these synergies and raises some potential opportunities for sharing knowledge and innovation between the two areas of activity in the future.

The uranium grade in roll front deposits is the result of successive processes that can be summarised in two steps. First a sedimentary phase, which gives the deposit support, then an oxidation-reduction phenomenon, which leads to the uranium deposit itself. In order to simulate such a deposit, it is important to mimic these different phases. The final aim of such a study is to localise the uranium itself and to reproduce the internal heterogeneity of the orebody in order to simulate the recovery process. The idea in this paper is not to reproduce a genetic approach but to consider the final image of the deposit. Three approaches are proposed. The first one consists of simulating the facies of the sedimentary deposit. The second approach reproduces the distribution of facies resulting from oxidation phenomenon (reduced or oxidised facies). The third approach consists of simulating the mineralisation at the interface of reduced and oxidised areas using the definition of a new data set determined by the grade values. At the end of each approach, the uranium grade could be simulated facies by facies according to the corresponding distribution characteristics. The plurigaussian method dedicated to random set simulations is well-suited for the facies simulations of deposits resulting from several sedimentary processes whether correlated or not. In this paper, the benefit of this method is demonstrated in an actual case study.

In 2001, the Springvale Coal Mine determined a requirement for a 360 m deep vertical airway to ventilate ongoing underground longwall mining operations. The project, referred to as the Springvale No 3 Ventilation Shaft, was completed in 2003 - 2004 by blind boring a 4.25 m diameter hole from the surface to the coal seam at 360 m depth. The shaft was completed with a 3.5 m inside diameter lining made from a continuous watertight steel and concrete composite pipe. Presented from both the clientÆs and the contractorÆs perspective, the following paper describes the process of constructing a blind bored ventilation shaft for this application. Beginning with the clientÆs definition of the requirements and specifications for the shaft, the paper describes the steps followed by Springvale Coal prior to awarding the contract. Springv aleÆs process involved a thorough site investigation including procurement of geotechnical data for prospective contractors and the management of issues relating to safety, quality and the environment. The clientÆs view is followed by a description of the planning and works performed by their nominated shaft drilling contractor, Ardent Underground Pty Ltd.The contractorÆs description of the works includes the details of the blind shaft drilling and lining construction process used for this application. The design of the shaft lining installed at Springvale Coal was the first of its type to be used in Australia. The successful installation of a watertight composite shaft lining and the safety of the method, which did not require any personnel to enter the shaft or the mine, were among the positive outcomes from the project.

The decoppering of soft and hard leads was investigated by stirring in an open pot, using sulfur or sulfur plus pyrites, or sulfur plus pyrrhotite, as reagents. Lead samples taken during the process were analysed for copper. Dross samples were examined by optical micro- scope, SEM and XRD. Soft lead containing silver can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at low temperatures - close to 330¦C. Soft lead, whether containing silver or not, can be decoppered satisfactorily at higher temperatures by stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites. Then CuFeS2, Cu5FeS4 and PbS are formed, instead of Cu2S, CuS and PbS when using S alone. Hard lead containing tin can be decoppered satisfactorily by stirring with 0.1% S at temperatures from 320-400¦C. When stirring with 0.1% S plus 0.4% pyrites, reversion of copper from dross to lead on prolonged stirring does not occur. Hard lead without tin can be decoppered with S plus pyrites better than with S alone, but the presence of antimony hinders the decoppering, which is less effective on lead with 5.5% Sb than with 2.3% Sb.

Filter aids are currently used in many industries to increase filtrate clarity and filtration rates. In other industries filtration could be improved if accept- able filter aids could be obtained cheaply. The present paper describes a simple thermal process for making filter aids from coal, outlines the effects of coal properties and major operating variables, and discusses the properties of satisfactory products. Several possible variations in reactor design have been used experimentally, involving fluidized beds of carbon or inert material, reaction of the particles while entrained in air, and a combination of entrainment and fluidization. The limits imposed on product yields by the composition of the parent coal are considered in relation to a range of Australian coals and one New Zealand coal; and the effects of temperature, residence time, and reactant flow rates have been studied in relation to product yields and characteristics.

The Western New South Wales Electric Power Proprietary Limited is the central generating authority for distribution of power to the majority of the Broken Hill mining companies and the Broken Hill Water Board. This station supplies the whole of the power to North Broken Hill Ltd and Broken Hill South Ltd. It also supplies, power to the Southern Power Corporation for distribution to the Zinc Corporation Ltd. The Southern Power Corporation has a generating station which is tied in with the central generating authority.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

This paper attempts to draw together the experience of over 30 years of research and practice in the United Kingdom on the rehabilitation of abandoned metalliferous mining wastes. The reliance on water when the mines were operating has implications for water quality and the techniques used to restore sites to alleviate the principal impacts of the mines. Drivers of reclamation included concerns about human health from wind blown dust and pollution of watercourses as well as perceptions of dereliction. Techniques of reclamation used involved removal of spoil from near to surface watercourses, capping of spoil, diversion of watercourses, use of impermeable membranes, prevention of surface sinks into underground workings and the use of constructed wetlands. The issues to be dealt with in mine reclamation have become more complex and sometimes diverge. The schemes in the 1990s described have been effective in dealing with pollution from spoil heaps and small but significant adit discharges; however, significant issues, particularly those of large flows of polluted water from mine sites, still need to be dealt with. Although the paper describes the legacy of mining, which largely finished in the late 19th/early 20th century, similar issues but on a larger scale are to be found in more recent mining, for example Eastern Europe. In many of these areas minerals still remain to be won and dealing with this legacy may fall on new mining developments.

While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) is one of the key risks facing the mining industry worldwide. If not properly managed and/or not identified in a timely manner, AMD has the potential to decrease environmental values for generations to come. Ore extraction generates vast volumes of mineral waste (waste rock and tailings) which are stored in perpetuity at the mine site. Some of these materials are not inert and when in contact with air and water can react, generating poor quality water and compromising operational and closure environmental objectives. Understanding the geochemical behaviour of waste rock and tailings is therefore key to identifying risks and opportunities which support effective mineral waste management strategies across the mining value chain and progress toward an environmentally sustainable future that minimises closure liabilities. To ensure AMD risk is recognised and managed uniformly across its portfolio, BHP developed a Global AMD Management Standard for implementation across all operations, including closed sites. The AMD Management Standard provides a management framework to support the consistent, simple and sustainable global management of AMD risks. This ensures mines are planned and operated to be environmentally smart and modern, geochemical risk management is not an afterthought but a key driver, and environmental sustainability is actively pursued to reduce closure liabilities. The AMD Management Framework, on which the Standard is based, was adapted from industry leading practice guidance, ensuring it applies to multiple regions. The framework also comprises sequential requirements throughout the mining life-cycle. It is an iterative framework with an adaptive management approach that is designed to incorporate new data, information and management opportunities into AMD risk assessments and mine plan revisions.

There are many established methods of excellence: benchmarking, target setting, supply chain and market analysis, employee suggestions and knowledge sharing forums. Practices Benchmarking involves organisational and technical questions that allow the site to self-assess their maturity and generate a prioritised improvement path. Not only does it benchmark and identify gaps, but the approach also facilitates networking, education and team building. For new leaders it is important to remember that you are not alone. Chances are your problem has been solved before. Networks û internal, external, formal and informal can get you started and often save you time and effort. Any leader can achieve success in excellence through a proper process of problem formulation, data and analysis. Again, using key players can make the process more effective. It is important to remember that the people side of the solution is the key to success and that monitoring will ensure the solution will work. In the words of BHP BillitionÆs CEO, Chip Goodyear: Excellence is a mind set. ItÆs something that comes when people get rewarded forthinking outside the box and applying their skill and knowledge. Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

The green energy transition is speculated to cause an increase in the demand for raw materials while recycling rates are improving; discoveries are required to maintain supply. Geological remote sensing offers a cost-effective way of exploring mineral resources. While satellite and airborne imaging are routinely used for exploration targeting, a gap remains at the outcrop scale. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is advantageous for large-scale regional mapping, typically performed from satellite or airborne platforms. Accurately mapping geological lithologies remains challenging in inaccessible areas, such as rough terrain or mine sites. Proximal sensing techniques can boost geological activities’ reliability, safety, and efficiency in exploration or during mining activities. It also generates objective, reproducible results and valuable raw data that can be archived, further processed, and re-interpreted. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging of outcrops has steadily increased during the last decade due to sensor development and better processing routines. There is often a big technology gap related to mineral mapping, integration of images and spectra (reduction in manual identification of minerals and types) and hyperspectral data visualisation through remote sensing. TEXMiN Foundation, in collaboration with its industry partner Dassault Systemes Foundation, carried out the project, ‘Developing Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis, build a rich library of Hyperspectral images of a vast range of minerals from India which will help in increasing prediction accuracy of mineral deposit for mining exploration’.

It is common practice to include microspheres or similar density reducing agents in inherently insensitive water-based commercial explosives to achieve detonative sensitivity in the absence of chemical sensitisation. It has recently become possible to similarly include microspheres in LDAN (low density ammonium nitrate). Further to previous studies and publications to determine the benefits resulting from the use of microsphere enhanced LDAN technology in blasting, additional advantages are described in this document. These include range tests at independent testing facilities (Universal Tech Corporation û USA) which reflect results observed in the field, and support theoretical assumptions made when the products were introduced. Additionally, on-site studies in opencast pits using Heavy-ANFO blends incorporating modified LDAN, show that monetary savings can be realised through significant advantages gained in plant throughput and explosives use.

Diesel-engine exhaust emissions represent a concern to the mining industry due to the poten- tially harmful health effects of the pollutants, as well as high costs associated with providing proper ventilation to assure a healthful working environment. The control of exhaust emissions is complex since the operating mode and condi- tion of the engine, the mine environment, and the operator's skills all influence the concen- tration and composition of the emissions. It is not practical to measure each exhaust pollutant in underground mines; therefore, a monitoring methodology is required to measure the pollut- ants and assess the air quality.

A regional scale prospectivity model was developed for Papua New Guinea (PNG) to identify areas of porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. Weights of evidence modeling techniques were used to determine spatial correlations between porphyry Cu-Au mines and predictive maps created from available spatial data. These predictive maps were then combined into a final prospectivity map. Despite limited regional scale data the model has successfully identified areas of known porphyry mineralisation as prospective and has also identified areas where new mineralised systems may be discovered with further exploration.
