Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

A variety of algorithms and methods are being used by the mining industry today to map mineral resource for reserve estimation. The traditional methods including Polygonal, Sectional and Inverse Distance methods are relatively easy to understand and implement. They have served industry well for several decades and should continue to do so for the large bulk mineable deposits with very regular geometries with relatively small variation in grade.

The purpose of this paper is to explain the basic structure of how minerals are marketed, whilst highlighting the essential factors that mine management needs to be confident are incorporated into a mineÆs marketing strategy. The traditional mine management approach to marketing has been to defer its scrutiny to the marketing manager and take a largely passive role. It is this paperÆs assertion that mine management needs to become more proactive and provide greater strategic input into the marketing process. Irrespective of what mineral your mine produces, the key marketing principles remain constant and need to be understood and managed to extract the full benefit on behalf of the mining asset. From a mine management perspective, success is ultimately linked to understanding these marketing principles and ensuring that they are effectively addressed by your mineÆs marketing strategy. This paper will unashamedly attempt to simplify marketing by explaining how the basic fundamentals of supply and demand set market direction, the importance of a comprehensive marketing strategy, the importance of customer relationships and how contracts and prices are typically negotiated. This paper will use examples from the metallurgical coal (met coal) industry to highlight these points. The paper will also provide a template for developing the critical mine interaction that needs to exist between the marketing department and management to develop a æwhole of mineÆ approach to marketing. It is this core group that will be strategically responsible for delivering the commitments your mine has made to your customers. For mine management not to be actively involved in this process puts at æriskÆ the hard won production and cost efficiencies achieved at your mine and ignores the opportunity to maximise your current and future revenue streams. And whilst this paper recognises that is arguably unreasonable for mine management to become æmarketing expertsÆ, it also argues that it is unreasonable for a mine management to divorce themselves from the process.

"With the recent advancement in drill core imaging systems, a large volume of high resolution drill core images can now be rapidly collected and mineralogically classified. This paper introduces a novel semi-automated method for rapid prediction of process engineering parameters from this type of image. The aim is to allow for a rapid and low-cost assessment of the ore processing variability within a mineral deposit with a reduced amount of metallurgical test work. This method will see its application primarily in the project evaluation phase, where proper evaluation of the processing variability of the orebody normally requires a prolonged and costly metallurgical test work program. Applying this image-based texture analysis method on the mineralogical classified drill core images, the ores are classified according to their textures. For each engineering parameter, a small number of physical test work is required to produce a data set for training and testing of the predictive model. The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. In November 1992, the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) was formed from the rperggr of the Papua New Guinea Taxation Of- fice (PNGTO) and the Bureau of Customs, and now has the re- sponsibility for the administration of direct and indirect taxes on a national basis in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Since that date we have undertaken many initiatives to make the new organisation more efficient and responsive to clients' needs. Income Tax The mining industry is catered for, in respect of income tax, un- der a separate taxation regime within the Income Tax Act (ITA), Division 10, as well as some general provisions within that Act as may be applicable. Division 10 is itself broken up into subdi- visions to cover the different types of mining leases, namely Spe- cial Mining Leases (SMLs) and Mining Leases (MLs), and peri- ods of time during which those sub-divisions apply. Ring Fencing Income tax assessed on the mining industry, with the exception of Mining Leases (these will be explained later), has a project basis of assessment, that is, each project is assessed separately as if the taxable income of the taxpayer from operations attributable to the project was the only assessable income derived by that taxpayer. This is often referred to as "ring fencing". This is an important point to consider because losses from unsuccessful projects cannot be set off against income from those that are suc- cessful, except in very limited specific circumstances, such as where an unsuccessful exploration licence is cancelled or surren- dered. The project basis of assessment applies to both resident and non-resident companies. A relaxation in the 'ring fence' provisions was applied from 1st January 1995, where ten percent of exploration expenditure, in- curred in areas outside of Special Mining Leases and Petroleum Development Licences in a particular year of income, can be claimed as an outright deduction which is limited to ten percent of the tax otherwise payable in that year. This was introduced to encourage exploration in PNG.

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

Acid mine drainage is a serious and chronic environmental problem of mining. This paper discusses the factors affecting the rate of acid generation by mine rocks and illustrates the relevance of these factors to the mines of the Northern Territory, Australia. The factors may be divided into two groups: internal factors and external factors. The first group covers characteristics of ores, mine waste rocks, tailings, etc and the second group covers surrounding conditions. The latter is further divided into four sub-groups, viz surrounding temperature and pressure, chemical conditions (ferrous/ferric adsorption ratio, total iron concentration, oxygen concentration and pH), surrounding biological conditions and mechanical conditions. Special attention is given to the surrounding P-T conditions, especially water partial pressure, and its relevance to the Northern Territory mines.

Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

In the early ages man contented himself with the use of such tools and appliances as would assist him in the enlightenment of his labours. With the advancement of science, numerous motives, with modifications and adaptations, have been introduced to enlighten labours, and in many cases have taken the place of man, but it can hardly be said that this applies to shovels, although one of the oldest implements of labour; certainly, with the introduction of the steam shovel the labours of man have been considerably reduced, but the hand shovel of today is used similarly to that of years ago.If the principle of the hand shovel has not been improved upon, it must not be suggested that the manufacturers of this article are not endeavouring to improve its quality, and the main point with which the manufacturers have to contend is the production of an article which will give a maximum of durability combined with a minimum of lightness. In order to accomplish this they must select suitable material, and subject it to such heat treatment process that will produce a shovel having a maximum of hardness and toughness without being unduly brittle, and which will withstand the excessive wear to which it is subjected.In this article an endeavour will be made to explain (a) the manufacture of shovels; (b) the defects commonly met with-the cause of same and measures which are necessary to remedy them.Before doing so a brief description will be given of the class of steel used for shovels; this is an important factor, and a steel which is admirably suitable is a plain carbon one containing approximately 55 - 70% C., and closely resembles that used for the manufacture of railway rails. This plain carbon steel is very extensively used, although at present alloy steels are being utilised to a certain extent for shovel manufacture, and with suitable heat-treatment.

The wear mechanisms of impregnated diamond drill bit matrices are complex and believed to be the key point in solving drill bit self-sharpening problems. A method has been developed to find the change in c,, the wear rate of matrices having different fracture toughness K_ at the increment of drill pressure P. The worn surfaces of specimens were placed under a scanning electron microscope to examine the wear patterns and wear mechanisms at different pressures, and were compared with the worn surface of a practical drill bit. A model is proposed that within a wide range of pressures there exist two different wear mechanisms and three wear regions for cemented car- bide matrix materials. In region one (linear region), at low pressure, the major wear mechanism is plastic deformation in which the preferential wear of the binder phase of the matrix results in the loss of WC, tung- sten carbide particles. Wear rate is controlled by hardness, H as Archard's formula predicts. Wear enters region two and three (non-linear region) simultaneously as pressure is being increased. Consequently, wear transfers to fracture mechanism in which micro-fracture occurs at the root of wear grooves and the material is removed mainly in piece and mass. It has been shown fracture toughness K,, plays a more important role than hard- ness H. It is concluded that for a specific drilling condition, the pressure on the matrix should be carefully controlled and a balance between hard- ness and toughness of the material is essential for a steady drilling Condition.

Froth flotation relies on an attractive force between a particle and a bubble to selectively extract particles from a mixture. The range and magnitude of this attractive force is an area of ongoing investigation. We describe measurements of the effect of dissolved gases on the long-range attractive surface forces between a silica plate and a glass sphere in aqueous octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (C18TACl) solutions. The measurements follow on the work of Sakamoto et al (2002) who have concluded that long-range interactions occur in air-equilibrated surfactant solutions but not in degassed solutions. In the present work, we have measured attractive forces that have a much larger in magnitude than the expected van der Waals force in solutions that were degassed by the same procedure used by Sakamoto et al (2002). We find that the forces are most attractive at 5 + 10-6 M C18TACl, which is close to the charge compensation point (ccp) of the glass sphere. At this concentration, the attractive force decays exponentially with distance and the decay length is 34 in air-saturated solution, and 38 nm in degassed solutions. In both air-equilibrated and degassed solution, the force is quite sensitive to the concentration of surfactant. The force is also sensitive to the pH. We note that our degassing procedure increases the pH of the solution from about 5.7 to 6.6 (presumably by removal of dissolved CO2). We find that the forces measured in degassed solution can be reproduced by using a solution that was equilibrated in air, then the pH was increased by addition of NaOH. Therefore, we conclude that the main effect of degassing in our experiments is to raise the pH. We show that the range and magnitude of the attractive force decreases in the presence of salt (NaCl). This suggests an electrostatic mechanism for the attraction. Possible mechanisms for the attractive force are examined, including the mechanisms that rely on a patchy coverage of surfactant on the silica surface.

Improved process control can be achieved through the accurate and reliable on-line measurement of critical process parameters in real time. Over the past few decades on-line analysis techniques have been developed and applied in the mineral and energy industries for the measurement of process stream composition, mineralogy, particle size and flow rates. This has led to increased throughput and product quality while reducing processing costs and minimising emissions. The support of a sustainable mineral processing industry will require the further development of on-line analysis and control technologies. The application of developments in instrumentation combined with improved control strategies will lead to improvements in process efficiency resulting in large economic benefits to the industry, reduced energy usage and lower process emissions. There is a clear convergence of interests in being able to better measure and control minerals processing in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental impacts. Technology is increasingly becoming available enabling measurement across the entire spectrum of minerals processing from mining to hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. CSIRO is developing a range of these new technologies. A number of these developments are discussed in the present paper, namely: on-line particle size analysis and acoustic emission methods to enhance the control and optimisation of grinding circuits; on-line mineralogy of dry powders and slurries; on-line bulk elemental analysers for application on conveyor belts and in smelters; and the development of new sensing technologies for sorting base metal ores.

The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. In the introduction to a recent paper dealing with, the relationships of magnetite and hematite in the banded iron formations or "jasper bars" of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian(17)t the author made a brief mention of these interesting rocks, of the principal series in which they occur and of a few of the rock and mineral types to be found within them.He drew attention to the essential shnilarity of these Western Australian banded iron formations to those of the pre-Cambrian of such other countries as the United States Lake Superior region, Sweden, South Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil, and gave a brief summary of his views as to the origin of the formations in Western Australia. Furthermore he stated that the banded iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and other' regions of Western Australia, and he referred to the assistance they have provided the field geologist in geological mapping and the determination of geological structures.It is in elaboration of this last statement that the present paper has been written. In the following pages will be found some examples of the use to which the jasper bars have been put in the determination of the geological structure of critical areas in the goldfields of the State.Firstly, however, it may be as well to recapitulate the features of interest in these rocks. The true jasper bars or banded iron formations including the types jaspilite, banded hematite quartzite and banded magnetite quartzite or chert, together with their higher grade metamorphic derivatives such as banded magnetite-gruneri~ quartzites, magnetitegrunerite schists, fayalite ,and hedenbergite bearing handed magnetitegrunerite quartz rocks and' to 'a lesser extent magnetite-hypersthene grunerite quartz rocks, are abundant in the older series of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian. They are best developed in the older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie series of the goldfields districts, interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments. The mineralogy andpetrology of these rocks, the history of their metamorphism and their origin have been discusseq elsewhere in some detail by the author(19), (20). In one of the papers(20) it was clearly demonstrated that in the light of the true facts the old silicified shear zone theory of the origin of the jasper bars is quite untenable and that the formations undoubtedly represent sedimentary horizons as was recently pointed out by McKinstry(14).It has also been shown that banded ferruginous cherts, quartzites and cherty carbonate rocks of much lower metamorphic grade are well developed...

Callide Coalfields produces a sub-bituminous, very subhydrous, low rank, steaming coal with good combustion properties, primarily for domestic power generation. Geological input into planning of coal extraction requires expedient production of detailed structural, lithological, analytical, geophysical and geotechnical data. The CSIRO-developed SIROLOG borehole logging software and hardware system allows for detailed spectrometric analysis of coal/interburden. The gamma-gamma and neutron-gamma SIROLOG techniques both provide improved prediction of ash content over other borehole techniques. The neutron-gamma technique also predicts density and some important ash constituents (especially iron, alumina and silica). The software/hardware configuration allows for quick, easy interpretation of coal seam depth and lithology, parting thickness and ash/ash constituent contents immediately after a borehole has been logged. Within certain mine areas in the Callide Basin, the iron content of mined coal is widely variable in both vertical and lateral extent within and between seams. This variability creates problems in predicting the slagging behaviour of æas-receivedÆ coal during combustion, especially where the iron content of the ash exceeds 19 per cent. Using the SIROLOG tool in co-operation with traditional borehole sample laboratory analysis results, patterns in this variability can be determined and related to geological properties and process of formation of the coal seams. Subsequently, areas of high iron can be predicted in advance of mining. Since 1992, on-going collection and interpretation of SIROLOG downhole geophysical log data has significantly contributed to a number of research projects related to gaining a preliminary understanding of the iron distribution and formation during the Coal MeasuresÆ deposition. Because the probe was able to record variations in coal mineral matter content, it was found to complement more conventional techniques such as reflected light petrography, X-Ray Diffraction and SEM techniques that examine the mineralogy of iron species. Additionally, software has been developed to allow integration of SIROLOG data into existing geology databases, enhancing coal quality modelling and daily prediction of parameters such as raw ash, silica and iron contents that are indicators of ash fusion propensity. The correlation of SIROLOG-derived iron geophysical traces between drillholes and other sample points highlighted lithological and structural controls in the iron distribution in the sequence previously not detected. This work has allowed the development of a methodology for predicting iron in advance of mining and reconciling as-sold coal quality to that predicted. Predictions are currently being assessed at the coal face as mining progresses through high-iron zones.

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

The co-mixing of tailings and waste rock involves the intimate blending of tailings and waste rock to create a new material (Co-Mix) with superior physical and hydraulic properties. The new material has a low hydraulic conductivity, low compressibility, high water retaining capacity and high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock restrict oxygen entry and water seepage to minimise acid generation and metal leaching. When compacted, Co-Mix materials have low volume change characteristics with respect to total stress and matric suction together with high shear strength. Co-mixed tailings and waste rock may be used to construct cover systems, internal barriers and seals, confinement structures or a full depth waste repository. The theoretical properties of Co-Mix blends are investigated. The results of a laboratory program to characterise the physical and hydraulic properties of co-mixed tailings and waste rock are presented. Various ratios of tailings were blended with different waste rock materials. Hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted at confining pressures ranging between 0 and 400 kPa. The saturated hydraulic conductivity for the Co-Mix materials was found to vary between 4 + 10-5 m/s and 5 + 10-9 m/s depending on blend ratio, waste rock type and confining pressure. These results together with other physical properties show excellent hydraulic and strength characteristics can be achieved for Co-Mix materials.
