Over recent years a number of techniques have been developed as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project to represent mathematically or measure directly subprocesses occurring in flotation cells. These include the determination of a:machine parameter (bubble surface area flux, Sb); froth parameter (froth recovery, Rf); entrainment and drainage parameters; and ore floatability parameter (Pi). A cost-effective methodology was developed for using these techniques to derive models of flotation circuits. This methodology was applied to derive a model of the flotation circuit at the Western Mining Corporation (WMC) Ltd Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The model was used to simulate a number of minor circuit flowsheet changes, the results of which are discussed in this paper. One year later, a second study of this plant was conducted. In this second study, data were collected while operating the plant in the flowsheet configurations that were simulated from the model developed from the first study. The results obtained from the second study showed reasonable agreement with the trends predicted from the first study model; discrepancies can be explained in terms of the model assumptions. This suggests that this simple circuit modelling methodology can be useful in assisting plant engineers to optimise flotation circuits.

The Morning Star mine is owned by Hill 50 Gold NL. Gold is hosted in quartz-carbonate ¦stibnite ¦molybdenite veins that occur in a series of deformed, altered and metamorphosed mafic volcanics with subordinate sediments and felsic intrusive rocks. The irregular gold distribution and its relationship to structure and alteration intensity makes the definition of stoping limits difficult. Understanding the structural evolution of the orebodies and the contemporaneous and later structures that affect the orebodies has been very useful in this context. This paper reports on a detailed mapping exercise (as part of a more extensive and on-going investigation) and the integration of this mapping with other geological and grade control data in a 3D modelling environment to provide an expanded basis for stope design. Three types of mineralised zones can be discriminated based on the morphology of the veins within. They are:those associated with strongly folded, thick veins (approximately 1 m thick eg 05 orebody); those comprising planar, boudinaged and some folded veins which consolidate to form tabular, steeply dipping bodies (eg 010 orebody); and zones containing the above vein types and thin, highly deformed veins within zones of intensely foliated country rock that result in localised, irregularly distributed high-grade gold zones (eg 02 orebody). The mineralised zones associated with thick folded veins are typically predictable over many tens of vertical metres. The second and third types of ore zone is generally less predictable. Detailed mapping and structural kinematic studies indicate all ore zone types are affected by progressive deformation involving strong strain partitioning. It is interpreted that high strain zones, recognisable by intense foliation development and highly deformed veins, are the latest stage of a progressive deformation which approximates bulk flattening. Structural controls on mineralisation can be defined at two different scales.Regional scale folding has deformed a sequence of mafic volcanics with interlayered sediments and felsic intrusives. Initial geometry of felsic bodies relative to orientation of the primary lithological layering and the bulk shortening direction is interpreted to be critical for initiation and development of strongly dilatant zones within this package of rocks, and Local scale dilation is evidenced by development of several vein sets whose range in orientations and opposed vergence relationships suggest a pre-folding origin comprising both extensional and hybrid shear-extensional types. Continued deformation resulted in folding of these veins with strong strain partitioning. Major vein packages are closely spatially associated with the felsic/mafic contact and an interpreted early structure which appears to have partitioned early dilation. This structure is now obscured by strong deformation but is currently represented by a zone of planar veins.

This paper is based upon the experiences of collaborating academics in two mining schools and their personal view of attempts to integrate the principles of sustainable development into mining education and research. In this quest, the concept of sustainable mining practices is proposed, not only relating to environmental, social and economic performance but also stressing mine safety and efficiency. These practices need to support strategies that enable flexibility and resilience within mine operations to counter recessionary cycles. Also, these counter-cyclical strategies are now imperative for sustaining mining education and research itself. There is a critical interdependence between these two different perspectives on æsustainabilityÆ. The paper concludes by demonstrating models of strategies that promote inter-disciplinarity, collaboration and networking for sustaining mining schools.

Micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT) is an X-ray imaging technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised ‘virtual’ models of geological specimens based on the X-ray attenuation of different materials in the specimen. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels, each assigned a gray value based on X-ray absorption. Micro-CT has enormous potential for allowing non-destructive, digital analysis of structure and composition when the mineralogical phases can be digitally separated. However, variation in X-ray flux between scans results in highly variable grayscale values for identical materials. Consequently, materials usually have to be segmented manually, which is subjective, inaccurate, labour-intensive and time consuming. Here we present a protocol and imaging software package that can be used to accurately and precisely extract quantifiable information in a repeatable and objective fashion. The software will allow the separation, visualisation, measurement and analysis of spatial and volumetric distribution of different mineral phases without damaging the specimen. This paper explains the potential use of this protocol and software package to ultimately allow automatic segmentation and quantification of gold in drill core samples, removing subjectivity and inaccuracies from data processing.

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. Although mining, particularly of gold and coal, played a significant role in the development of New Zealand, from the time of the spectacular gold rushes of the 1860s its economic importance to the country as a whole has decreased substantially since that time. Gold, coal and non-metallic agricultural and industrial minerals have been found in economically significant quantities, however, the search for base metals has not been successful.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. Tokyo Metropolitan Government designs the stormwater storage plans in underground, as a measure of flood control in completed urban district and improvement of combined sewarage system. This time, introducing those plans, we report about IKEJIRI and SIN-KOMAZAWA STORAGE TRUNK LINEs design and construction. They are located in Meguro river basin of the Morigasaki drainage area. Both storage trunk lines have capacity to store 15O,000m3 of stormwater. They are in use for countermeasure of flood till Meguro river's strengthening (intensity 50 mm/h) is ended. And after the strengthening, they will be in use for improvement of river water quality, through the storage of combined sewage and first runoff, which, otherwise overflows weirs and flows to river in a rainy day. These storage trunk line's full length is about 5700m. Boring diameter 66140 mm (f = 2672m) and 47800 mm (I = 2866m) of these tunnels are constructed by Mechanical Shield tunnelling method. And boring diameter 3600 mm x 4000 mm (R = 180m) is constructed by NATM tunnelling method. We began works in 1983, and have a mind to complete in 1987.

The kinetics of reduction of PbO-silicate melts in CO-N gas mixtures at 900¦C have been studied. Rea~tion rates were measured by moni- toring the CO2 content of the product gas. A wide range of gas and melt compositions and gas flowrates have been investigated. The overall reaction rates in heterogen- eous systems are typically characterised by a steady increase as the gas flowrate is in- creased. At low flowrates the processes are limited by gas film mass transfer. At high flowrates it is expected that the rates will tend to maximum values determined by either the rate limiting chemical reaction or diffusion in the condensed phase. In the present series of experiments it has been found that for any given gas composition the overall reduction rate goes through a maximum with increasing gas flow. The maxima, which occur at relatively low gas flows, are more than an order of magni- tude greater than those observed at high gas flowrates. The results of these and other experiments are presented and analysed. Possible rate limiting mechanisms in the reaction system and their implications regarding commercial reactors are discussed.

During the forthcoming reline of No.3 Blast Furnace at the Newcastle Steelworks of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., facilities for the screening and weighing o' coke will be installed. The equipment is needed to optimise the sizing and the quantity of coke immediately prior to it being charged to the furnace. Up till the time the furnace was blown out in November, 1982, coke was charged to the furnace by volume, ie by skip fulls only. This resulted in variation to the ore/coke ratio charged due to bulk density changes and erratic skip filling levels. This in turn affects the heat balance of the furnace and causes fluctuations in hot metal chemistry and temperature. A coke rate penalty has to be paid also. Coke layer thickness in the furnace burden cannot be controlled closely, resulting in loss of control over gas distribution in the furnace. A grizzly type screen was incorporated in the skip loading chute but this ineffective method left a great amount of fines with the coke being charged to the furnace. Furnace permeability was therefore reduced, particularly in the hearth.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927-28 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr. F. G. Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgurli mine, and Mr. Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

The thermodynamic properties of arsenic in metal, speiss, matte, slag and gas phases are first summarised in this paper. Arsenic associates with sulphide minerals and generally has compounds of high volatility, but it has a weak affinity for sulphur and a strong affinity for metals, especially copper and iron. In the initial stage of the oxidation of sulphide concentrates arsenic is volatilised easily prior to the oxidation of FeS, although it tends to be fixed in the condensed phase as FeAsO4 if the concentrate is over-oxidised. Thermodynamic simulation of oxidative copper smelting reveals the distribution of arsenic between matte, slag and gas, and the possibility of condensation of arsenic from the resulting waste gas is discussed. In reductive smelting more arsenic remains in the metal or matte, and is sometimes concentrated as a separate speiss phase. The phase relations and thermodynamic properties of speiss are also summarised briefly. Arsenic refining from smelted copper metal is shown, from an examination of the basic principles of arsenic removal into slags, to be difficult. Owing to its weak affinity for lead however, arsenic refining from lead bullion is seen to be much easier.

Near Kangiara in south eastern New South Wales, Australia, a number of polymetallic (copper, lead and zinc, with minor silver and gold) mineral deposits occur within a relatively broad volcanic rock belt, intercalated with limestones, sandstones and shales, of Silurian age. The Kangiara deposit was the most significant for the region.Adjacent to the Kangiara deposit, the unaltered country rocks are more rhyolitic than elsewhere in the volcanic rock belt, and the mineralization is accompanied by silicification, chloritization, sericitization and argillization. The host rocks typically contain a higher K20:Na2O ratio than the volcanic rocks not associated with mineralization.In the Kangiara deposit the mineralization consist of massive (in part banded), fragmental, disseminated and vein-type copper-lead-zinc ores, with the massive and fragmental types divisible into pyrite-rich, chalcopyrite-rich and sphalerite-galena-rich varieties. With respect to this mineralogy, the ore textures and sulphur isotope compositions the deposit can be compared to the stratiform mineralization associated with Silurian acid volcanic rocks at Woodlawn, Captains Flat and elsewhere in the Lachlan Fold Belt, as well as the Tertiary Kuroko deposits of Japan.

A company's survival and growth is, thus, dep- endent upon its ability to replace, increase, redistribute and to diversify its ore reserves. A Kennecott executive addressing a group of geologists in 1957 stated, "Management expects a geologist to find ore! That is the primary objective and the justification of the geologist in the minerals industry. There is no other function that we can rationalize." This is, however, a restricted point of view, and one which I an sure is not fully shared by mining executives or mine operators at the present time. Ore reserves are 'made' as well as 'found' and the geologist contributes to this process. A mining geologist engages in activity in- volving the study of geology in connection with the total mining operation. His major task is the adaption of geological knowledge of ore de- posits and rock behaviour to mining needs, and the application of principles of the science of geology to specific problems of finding, develop- ing and extracting of ore bodies.

This paper presents a research project referring to the stability of submerged walls of open pit mines and the actual state of development. Obviously the slope stability analysis is always a rather complex problem, because it is difficult to reduce the problem to a design scheme and to define the available in situ soil strength. Especially the design of submerged slopes represents a problem. The state-of-the-art slope stability analysis is based on a simplified modelling of slope failure and soil behaviour and with this predicted stable slope inclinations of sand slopes below water-table are less then half the angle of internal friction. Slope angles calculated like that canÆt satisfy the mining companies. One of the problems that have to be solved is the reliable determination of the long-term stability of non-cohesive, submerged slopes, which is not only dependant on geotechnical and hydrogeological parameters of the subsoil, but is also significantly influenced by how the slopes are made. The research project points at the relations between mining and geotechnical engineering with the main aim to find a more suitable stability analysis which takes both soil behaviour and mining influences into account.

The cost of production from truck and loader fleets is influenced by management development of the culture of the organisation, work practices, systems and procedures of the production and maintenance teams. Establishing if the cost of production is the best that can be achieved then requires the measurement of results against established standards of performance. This paper provides a series of discussion points of the factors that influence the cost of production from men and machines for large scale open pit mining operation and provides some suggested performance standards in the form of Benchmarks. Most of the references have been drawn from established large scale deep pit mines in USA, Canada and Australia which have had to implement and constantly fine tune cost efficiencies in order to survive. The discussion provides:ò a review of priorities or the relative importance of the various cost elements for a mining system;ò suggestions of systems and procedures for the operation and maintenance of machines which are considered to yield the best overall results;ò examples of operations that have developed and implemented management systems and controls that are achieving good results in specific functions; andò suggested benchmarks of performance.

The problems associated with underground mining continue to grow in size and complexity. As a result mine management is becoming aware of the benefits that can be achieved through the use of computer-oriented tools for system analysis. When such tools are employed in conjunction with benchmarking practices, the drivers of the system that lead to superior performance can more easily be determined. This paper discusses the use of the Simulation Language for Alternative Modelling (SLAM II) in the determination of the drivers of an underground room-and-pillar mining system. The mining operations included in the model consist of extracting, loading and hauling of the coal using continuous mining equipment in a room and pillar system. Equipment specifications and mining techniques used in the model are based upon current methods employed at the existing underground coal mines worldwide. The model developed is capable of adequately predicting the operational performance of the real world system from a statistical point of view. The results from the study show that computer simulation is an excellent tool for evaluating various mine configurations and for gaining a better understanding of the mining systems.

Virtual reality (VR) simulators represent a powerful tool for training humans to perform tasks which are otherwise expensive or dangerous to duplicate in the real world. The idea is not new. Flight simulators have been used for decades to train pilots for both commercial and military aviation. These systems have advanced to a point that they are integral to both the design and the operation of modern aircraft (Adams, Klowden and Hannaford, 2001; Mastaglio and Callahan, 1995). This technology has been successfully extended and utilised in the mining industry in a range of successful applications (Bise, 1997; Denby and Schofield, 1999a; Schofield, 2005; Henning et al, 2002; Kaiser, Vasak and Suorineni, 2005). There are a number of lessons that can be learned from other industries that have successfully utilised virtual technology for a number of years. Specific rules of thumb regarding the specification, development, application and operation of these simulators can be garnered from other industrial training systems and examined in a minerals industry context (Tromp and Schofield, 2004; Schofield, 2006). This paper intends to discuss some of these generic rules in the context of a number of recently developed virtual reality mining applications.

Traditionally, surface coal mines in the Western United States have been limited by economics to depths between 150 to 200 feet. Utah International Inc., however, is now planning to strip coal its San Juan Mine in Northwestern New Mexico to depths ranging up to 400 feet while uncovering 20 feet of steam coal. This method is cost-competitive with nearby shallower coal deposits and underground mining of the same property. How trucks and shovels can pre-strip for a dragline, along with results of the planning process, comparison with alternate systems, capital requirements, operating costs and comparisons with other coal sources are all detailed. Also discussed are the major problems anticipated, how they might be corrected, and potential improvements to the concept. Introduction The San Juan Deep Stripping Project will be situated at Utah International's San Jean Mine. The mine is in the Four Corners region, so-called because four states enjoy a common border point about 30 miles to the northwest.(see Figure 1). The area is a semi-arid plateau region with an average elevation of 5,200 feet, receiving an average of 6 inches of precipitation annually
