The approach to valuations at the Normandy Poseidon Group is a measured and methodical process that utilises skills sourced from a number of different disciplines. Whilst being subject to a strict set of guidelines, it is also sufficiently flexible to be able to cope with the considerable variety across the resources industry. The group uses Discounted Cash-Flow (DCF) techniques extensively in order to develop a base valuation. Other external factors (eg the market) are, however, also taken into account when forming a view on value. Other methods of valuation are used in tandem or as alternatives depending on the task. DCF techniques are an important tool but would never be used in isolation. Considerable care must be given to developing the DCF analysis as its components (eg discount rate) are prone to misuse. Whilst the valuation process is quite detailed and scientific, it is really only as good as the inputs or assumptions (technical, financial, etc) that are used. The methodology used remains consistent whether the group is undertaking the corporate planning process or making an acquisition.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

Copper sulfate is traditionally used to activate various types of sulfide minerals. The list of users includes Falconbridge Sudbury operations, where copper sulfate solution is added to the pyrrhotite/pentlandite middlings at the scavenging stage. Results from some batch tests reported in the literature suggested that copper activation is helpful for the improvement of pentlandite recovery, especially in the difficult to float fine particle range. Any improvement in pentlandite recovery is important since it is the main nickel bearing sulfide mineral. The impact of copper sulfate for this function has been investigated. Since the focus of current investigation was the flotation behaviour of minerals at the scavenger stage, rougher flotation was kept as constant as possible at two different weight recoveries, namely 13.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent that is relevant to industrial practice. Samples taken during batch testing were extracted using DETA and flotation products from selected tests were analysed to determine the recovery by size behaviour in relation to the use of copper sulfate. Results provide significant evidence that the addition of copper sulfate to these middlings does not yield greater nickel recovery, either on an overall or specific particle size basis. It is concluded that copper sulfate is wasted in the process and that self activation behaviour of the ore at a slightly reduced pH is sufficiently significant to maintain the scavenger recovery of pyrrhotite and pentlandite at desirable levels. Results obtained from limited circuit trials have shown supporting evidence for this conclusion.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world’s premier suppliers of iron ore. It currently has operations in Western Australia and Brazil and also has some iron ore interests in West Africa.BHP Billiton’s Optimisation R&D team has developed a proprietary mine planning optimisation tool that uses a mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This tool is called Blasor and it is used to rapidly evaluate the resource development potential (RDP) scenarios for the company’s business development strategy. In addition it generates life of asset (LOA) mine plans for the company’s operations and growth projects. The Blasor optimiser maximises the discounted operating cash fl ow (DCF) as the objective function, subject to mining, processing and transportation capacity constraints and blended product quality constraints. The paper will outline how Blasor has been applied to the resource development potential (RDP) strategy scenario studies, growth project evaluations and LOA mine planning within BHP Billiton Iron Ore.The practical application of Blasor to resource planning optimisation within BHP Billiton Iron Ore has demonstrated the value of such a tool for optimising strategic directions through the evaluation of a number of carefully proposed scenarios and maximisation of operational decisions, such as cut-off grade, open pit development sequence, etc. Particularly for the company’s business development direction studies, Blasor plays the role of a fair valuation tool in that it discovers the most valuable resource development scenario, thus establishing a sound basis for comparing the economic merits of each scenario.

The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. The SRM allows the impact of each parameter to be quantified and allows the support system to be optimised for given geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Esterhuizen, G S, Murphy, M M and Bajpayee, T S, 2014. FerrAus Ltd's Robertson Range and Davidson Creek Projects are located in the Hamersley Province about 100 km east of Newman, Western Australia. Significant iron mineralisation defined by an aggressive exploration program within the Marra Mamba Iron Formation is shallowly north dipping at Davidson Creek, and mainly shallowly east dipping at Robertson Range, forming part of a regional scale anticline with the granitic and greenstone basement of the Sylvania Inlier as its core. With minor exceptions, the stratigraphy is comparable with that seen in the main Hamersley Basin. Granite and greenstone basement rocks of the Sylvania Inlier are unconformably overlain by shales and volcanic rocks of the Fortescue Group. The overlying Hamersley Group is locally represented by interbedded chert, banded iron-formation (BIF) and shales of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (Nammuldi, MacLeod and Mount Newman Members), and dolomites, cherts, BIF and shales of the Wittenoom Formation. Iron enrichment occurs predominantly in the Mount Newman Member, and to a lesser extent in the West Angela Member of the Wittenoom Formation. Enrichment varies from 20 - 30 m in thickness in elongate bodies up to 3 km in strike length, and generally thins down dip. At Davidson Creek iron mineralisation is a haematite-goethite-ochreous goethite assemblage, while at Robertson Range this assemblage is consistently overprinted by a later, goethitic alteration related to 'hardcap' weathering. Near surface hardcap alteration in both project areas comprises more siliceous, aluminous and vitreous goethite. Initial exploration completed by Rio Tinto Exploration between 1999 and 2001 indicated the potential for about 20 Mt of iron mineralisation at Robertson Range. Since 2005 a detailed exploration program undertaken by Australian Manganese Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of FerrAus Ltd) has defined a global indicated and inferred resource totaling 164.4 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe (ASX: FRS 17 April 2009).

Acupan is considered to be an intrusive centre as several igneous phases have been emplaced in the vicinity of the mine over the past 8 Ma. The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake, The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18.6 lb xÇ20 per 100 lb dry coal), additions of 0.045 lb magnesium ion, 0.0026 lb separan A.P. 30, and 0.098 lb aerosol O.T., per 100 lb dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

The requirements for the controllability of metallurgical processes are increasingly becoming the focus of both industry and research. Advances in this field of research not only impact the stability of processes but often also influence the quality of the final product. One important way to examine processes in-depth, and thus show potential for improvement, is to describe them using physicsdriven models. In metallurgy, thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions of interactions between individual components of a system are often used to describe and analyse important metallurgical phenomena across the entire process. However, for the creation of physics-based models, boundary conditions and process variables must be implemented to enable a description that is as realistic as possible. The collection and generalisation of boundary conditions and process variables is, therefore, an important step towards functional models. The focus of this study is the determination of mass transfer coefficients between all components in a steel/slag/refractory system. For this purpose, experimental and theoretical methods are applied. Laboratory scale experiments are carried out in an induction furnace, and the mass transfer coefficients of the defined steel/slag/refractory system are calculated from changes in the chemical composition of the various components. Additionally, a calculation of the mass transfer coefficients based on dimensionless quantities is carried out. By comparing the values of the mass transfer coefficients determined theoretically and those determined experimentally in the trials, the suitability of the calculation is examined. The collection of mass transfer coefficients provides essential findings for future kinetic descriptions of inclusion modification based on the effective equilibrium reaction zone (EERZ) approach.

Phosphate induced stabilisation has been used to create passive iron phosphate coatings on pyrite and pyrrhotite. The formation of solid phosphate coatings on sulfide grains thereby inhibits sulfide oxidation. The aims of the study were to determine whether phosphate induced stabilisation could control sulfide oxidation and metal mobility in partly oxidised, polymineralic, sulfidic mine wastes. Waste materials were obtained from the acid mine drainage generating, abandoned Montalbion silver mine site, far north Queensland, Australia. The waste consists of quartz, kaolinite/illite, sulfide minerals (galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite), and pre- and post-mining oxidation products (hydrated Fe, Cu, Pb and alkali mineral salts). SEM observations of waste material treated with potassium orthophosphate showed that metal, metal-alkali and alkali phosphate coatings developed on all sulfides (with the exception of tetrahedrite). The abundance of phosphate phases was dependant on the availability of cations in solution for complexation with the phosphate anion. In turn, the release of cations was dependent on sulfide oxidation or the dissolution of efflorescent mineral salts. Experiments aiming to dissolve these phosphate coatings û using a strongly oxidising solution û showed that the phosphate coatings remained stable, preventing acid generation and metal release. The results of this study demonstrate that liquid phosphate stabilisers can suppress sulfide oxidation and immobilise metals in partly oxidised, polymineralic mine wastes.

In making any attempts to determine the depositional environments in which coal seams accumulated it would be useful to establish whether there is a pattern, or patterns, of development which the majority of the seams have followed. To this end, the distribution of types of coal seam sequences found in the standard petrographic profiles of about a hundred Australian coal seams of Permian and Triassic age has been examined statistically, using the "chi square test" with the limiting probability set at O·Gl.Results indicate that non-random conditions have probably prevailed during the deposition of most of the seams. More samples are needed for conclusive results.The plants, or some other internal feature of the swamp environment, have been the important controlling factor in the development of the seam sequences.Comparison has been made with some British Carboniferous coals.

Geostatistical simulation has been widely used in mineral resource classification of metalliferous deposits based on international standards such as JORC code which is one of the most extensively used around the world for reporting the mineral resources and ore reserves alongside with objectives of the companies (Sadeghi, Madani and Carranza, 2015). However, the modeling process becomes challenging whenever the relationship between the variables of interest is complicated and cumbersome to model. This characteristic sometimes manifests itself in complex spatial and global cross-correlation measures, deeply depending on the formation and genesis of the deposit. The objective then is to generate the models that not only reproduces these significant characteristics, but also, it leads to a better understanding of a mineral resource estimation and successive decision-makings. In this respect, there are different approaches taking into account the spatial correlation structures, for which can be classified as independent simulation, co-simulation, and factor-based methodologies. In this paper, three techniques: Turning Bands Independent Simulation (TBSIM), Turning Bands Co-Simulation (TBCOSIM) and Projection Pursuit Multivariate Transform (PPMT); from those aforementioned approaches are selected to model two cross-correlated variables (Iron and Aluminum Oxide) belonging to an Iron ore deposit located in Brazil, in order to examine which methodology better reproduces the corresponding complexity in terms of local correlation measure. Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and lining behaviour during and after construction of the Mount Shaughnessy Tunnel (Rogers Pass Short Tunnel) in Canada. The instrumentation was placed in a soft ground section of the tunnel at its crossing with the Trans Canada Highway. The tunnel was excavated through a dense bouldery soil. Presentation of the field data and inter- pretation of the tunnel performance from a geological-geotechnical point of view form the basis of this paper. The loss of ground due to the tunnel excavation was found to be exceptionally small. This has been attributed to the unusually high strength and stiffness of the host soil. Evaluation using the Boundary Element Method, together with a simplified analytical technique, were applied to assess the relevant soil parameters and their influence on the tunnel performance.

The Dampier Port Upgrade Project (DPU) involves an upgrade to Hamersley IronÆs Parker Point iron ore port facility at Dampier, Western Australia. The $US700 million DPU Project will increase Hamersley IronÆs shipping capacity at Dampier from 72 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 116 Mtpa. The DPU Project comprises a new car dumper facility and rail spur, an upgrade to the existing stockyard and conveying system, a new screen-house and a 450 m wharf extension with two new shipping berths and a new ship-loader. This paper discusses the innovative design and construction of the new car dumper facility, which is capable of automatically unloading 240 car iron ore trains at a rate of 10 000 t/h. The facility design is unique compared to more conventional designs currently in operation, and greatly improves operation and maintenance functions.

Many problems result when coal mine shafts are built in complicated geological conditions and serious shaft lining ruptures have often occurred in the eastern part of China since 1987. Grouting is applied as one of the major measurements for shaft lining ruptures. However, as the general location of reinforcement grouting for shaft lining is deep in or near the bottom aquifer, while using cement grout as the grouting material, the grouting mostly belongs to fracturing grouting in deep alluvium. In these conditions, the mechanism and behavior of fracturing grouting has not yet been understood. From these points of view, this paper describes the mechanism of shaft lining rupture and fracturing grouting and then discusses the effect of grout injection on the stability of shaft lining by means of numerical analysis and field data obtained so far.

For the mechanisation or automation of mining, recognition of the shape of mined cavities is basic information. A three dimensional shape measuring system, developed and tested, includes an ultrasonic range finder which is attached to the tip of a serial link manipulator. The range finder can be moved to any position and direction in the operational space of the manipulator. The position of a point on the surface of the object is obtained from the position of the range finder, the direction of the beam of the ultrasonic waves and the measuring distance of the range finder.To avoid collision between the sensor and the object, the manipulator is controlled to trace the surface of the object For the tracing control, another ultrasonic range finder is employed. The test results show that the developed system has high performance.

This address is set deliberately in the broadest possible terms. A review of the place of mining in Australian life today will serve to point up the changes that we can see in the life of people in the industry. Some of the influences on the future welfare of mining people bear also on the progress of this Institute, now approaching its 90th year. As mining becomes more and more dependent on higher technology and therefore, on the higher skills of the people in the industry, the role of The Institute, I suggest, becomes more and more significant.With investment per employee in mining generally continuing to rise, our ability to handle problems of manpower and human relations becomes a matter of greater importance.Questions that flow from these general thoughts form the substance of what I have to say.

Unit cycles in mining have not changed for many years. Productivity increases over the past three decades have mainly been achieved by using larger and heavier machines. This investment in size has probably reached the point of diminishing returns and increased productivity in the future will have to be generated by other means. One way of achieving this is through automation of selected unit operations, eg dragline overburden removal, truck haulage, ground support installation and secondary breakage. Although, in the past few years, there has been significant progress in this direction, we are still a long way away from even partial automation - especially in hard rock mines. This paper addresses the technical obstacles facing mining automation; suggests ways by which these obstacles may be overcome and identifies the role of industry groups and research providers in this process.

The results of shaft lining monitoring gave rise to an investigation of cracks observed in the structure. An hypothesis was made that the cracks might be due to stresses caused by energy wave propagation, triggered during blasting or by the rock falls. However, it could not be excluded that the cracks had their origin in the rheologic changes taking place in the concrete. To prove the hypothesis, an investigation of the scale of the increase of stress due to the energy triggered was undertaken. At the same time it was decided to attempt to determine the "damage threshold" for such material in the danger zone. In the paper the investigation and its results are presented, as conducted in one of the shafts. In conclusion, certain generaliza- tions are proposed to give a starting point in the consideration of similar problems elsewhere.
