The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). Rock surface roughness plays an important role in excavation engineering projects and applications related to surface support structures, such as shotcrete and thin-sprayed liner (TSL). The morphology of the substrate affects the mechanical behaviour at the interface significantly. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify the roughness to investigate the relationship between roughness and mechanical properties. The joint roughness coefficient (JRC) proposed by Barton and Choubey (1977) is widely used in practice. It initially estimated the roughness by comparing it to 10 standard profiles visually. However, this method has lots of limitations, it is not only subjective but also a two-dimensional parameter with a small lab scale (Beer, 2002). The subsequent research on JRC, from visual comparison with Barton’s standard profiles to measuring the roughness with a profilometer (Weissbach, 1978; Alameda-Hernández et al, 2014). Then, 2D profiles or 3D surfaces by different technologies with higher resolution and accuracy, such as 3D laser or optical scanners (Fardin, 2004; Jiang, 2020, 2021). These 3D scanners are expensive and only suitable for laboratory scales. LiDAR scanners (Lato, 2009; Aubertin, 2022) have been applied in industrial size, but it is difficult to achieve a millimetre-level accuracy, which is mostly used to detect the thickness of shotcrete in practice. Thus, finding a cost-effective surface roughness measurement method with high accuracy is necessary. Photogrammetry is another method to digitalise the roughness of the surface. Similar to 3D scanners, photogrammetry also generates the point cloud of the objective surface and then reconstructs the 3D model of the objects. 3D reconstruction technology is a trendy technology in recent years. The structure from motion (SfM) algorithm (Westoby, 2012) to rebuild the 3D model with a flexible workflow, aligning photos, building dense point cloud, mesh and texture, which has been proved that can rebuild an accurate model in variable fields.

The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

Late-Archean banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted deposits in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are less well understood compared to the larger Paleoproterozoic, Superior-type BIFhosted deposits of the Hamersley Province. The Weld Range greenstone belt, in the Murchison Domain of the Yilgarn Craton, hosts two Archean, high-grade deposits, Madoonga (68 Mt resource at 57.7 wt per cent Fe) and Beebyn (62 Mt resource at 59.6 wt per cent Fe, ASX announcement 2008). Five main types of high-grade (>55 wt per cent Fe) iron mineralisation at Weld Range each display characteristic grades, tonnage, and contaminant levels, which affect exploration strategies and beneficiation methods:1. ‘Residual’ ore formed as a result of two generations of hypogene alteration of BIF. The first alteration phase replaced silica-rich bands with siderite and/or Fe-rich dolomite; the second phase involved the removal of carbonate gangue minerals and the concentration of residual Fe oxide-rich bands in the BIF via volume reduction. The product is a high-grade, high-tonnage Fe orebody, with minor contaminants.2. Magnetite-bearing shear and fault zones cut BIF along lithological contacts. These zones of secondary magnetite formed as a result of the addition of hypogene magnetite via the circulation of Fe-rich, hypogene hydrothermal fluids through BIF. This type of mineralisation produces narrow (low-tonnage), high-grade magnetite-rich ore zones with high levels of contaminants (eg SiO2, Al2O3) due to the difficulty in mining these zones.3. Specular haematite ± quartz-bearing shear and fault zones cut residual orebodies and magnetite bearing structures. They share similar characteristics to magnetite-bearing structures.4. Goethite-haematite supergene ore zones are controlled by brittle faults that cut BIF. These faults promoted the flow of supergene fluids through BIF and resulted in large ore zones with variable Fe grades and contaminants.5. Detrital deposits comprise transported BIF fragments and are intensely goethite-haematite supergene-altered. These orebodies are locally extensive, with moderate Fe grades.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Operators of nickel laterite pressure acid leach and gold pressure oxidation technology frequently employ a series of steam condensing heaters to preheat the leach feed slurry. The heaters are an economic pinch point û although the thermal performance of the heaters is critical to overall process viability and operating cost minimisation, they are also a significant capital item and must be sized accordingly. Despite this, discussions of the factors underlying heater design are conspicuously absent from technical literature, and existing operations feature a conflicting range of heater sizes and configurations. This variety would suggest that at least some of the chosen heater designs are oversized. As part of its detailed design stage, the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) constructed and tested a pilot plant heater to develop an understanding of the heating process and to ensure that the RNP heaters were appropriately sized. This testwork used RNP slurry at design density and viscosity on a 450 mm diameter, 6500 mm high column. The pilot plant testwork demonstrated the intrinsic efficiency of the direct steam condensation heating process, which was essentially independent of slurry density and viscosity. Presence of non-condensable gases in the steam phase decreased the heat transferred in certain circumstances, but heater performance remained consistent with thermodynamic limitations. Stagewise heat transfer within the column was rapid, and suggested either a very high slurry surface area or excellent heat transfer within the slurry phase. While the testwork did not set out to distinguish between these effects, physical evidence pointed to droplet formation in the inter-tray shower zone, giving a high heat transfer area. For scale-up purposes, the key facts were that the heat transfer rate was not limited by using high viscosity slurries and heaters could be designed using the principles applied to the smaller of those in existing operations. This paper discusses existing slurry heater designs, the current understanding from open literature, the pilot plant testwork, results and analysis, and scale-up to commercial sized equipment.

In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. "BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. Tumbling mills are grossly inefficient, using only 5 per cent of the total energy supplied for actual breakage. A significant proportion of this inefficiency is unavoidable owing to geometric limitations; rotating drum systems are prone to exhibiting certain regions (energy barriers) that resist particle entry thereby restricting the transfer of energy. Though such systems are inherently inefficient, improved modelling schemes may lead to slightly enhanced efficiency through better microscale predictions of key breakage drivers (stress, force). Central to achieving such incremental advances is the development of a universally accepted rheology for dense granular flows. Armed with a better understanding of these macro-scale ingredients, classical process modelling offers an efficient, spreadsheet friendly framework for recovering the spatial distributions of the comminution drivers. At this real-time level of process control, it should be possible to tune comminution operations towards more energy efficient configurations – the ultimate goal of this research. The present work employs validated DEM data to recover the full continuum field which will ultimately serve as a basis for calibrating process model outputs based on different rheological hypotheses. Such a continuumbased approach captures tensor properties like the shear stress and strain rate – both of which are necessary to developing a dense granular rheology. Moreover, DEM captures this data at the momentum transfer timescale of 10-6 s – no other measurement technique is capable of this level of spatial and temporal resolution. Importantly, the confidence in this DEM data is strengthened because it has been validated at the continuum scale using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) kinematic measurements. Validated DEM data is derived from batch experiments conducted within a 300 mm ID laboratory drum using three and five millimetre glass beads at 60 and 75 percent critical speed; such mill speeds are typically encountered in the tumbling mill industry. Dimensional analysis is conducted using critical rheological parameters (shear rate, shear stress, granular temperature etc), which are key to not only developing a granular rheology but ultimately will be used to tune our mechanistic models.

The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand near the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 45 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. The Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) is owned jointly by New Zealand Oil & Gas Limited (NZOG) and private investors.   The project has followed a long and difficult road towards project implementation which is now a reality with mine construction scheduled to commence in November 2005. The first stage of the project, the consent and land access process has been the most difficult. Resource consents for the project were first applied for, granted and appealed in 1998. A second round of modified resources consents followed a similar path in 2001. Following consultation with a range of parties including local and central government as well as the Department of Conservation, in March 2004 the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through Department of Conservation land. In October 2004, the Environment Court issued a Memorandum of Consent granting resource consents with conditions that had been negotiated between PRCC and the appellants.   The second stage of the project, investigation and design, commenced in December 2004 and was completed in June 2005 with the PRCC board ratifying the project capital and operating budgets. While the investigation and design work was proceeding, PRCC were also engaged in securing private equity and bank debt funding for the project. Formal Board approval to proceed with project construction was granted in September 2005 following completion of fund raising.   The project consists of a number of significant construction activities, namely: +        10.5 km of mine access road through previous logged and virgin rain forest; +        2.2 km of tunnel through metamorphic rock; +        a coal preparation plant about 8.3 km from the mine portal; +        an underground coal preparation plant; and +        a major slurry pump station, high and low pressure underground water supply systems to support hydraulic mining units and underground coal transport respectively.   Project construction is expected to be completed in April 2007 with completion of the ventilation shaft. Mine production will commence in December 2006 with coal from pit bottom development which will be carried out by the mine owner.

The Porgera gold project is now in its seventh year of operation as one of the world's prime gold mining projects in one of the most underdeveloped and remote regions of the world. The unique gold deposit was development in stages to its present size of operation with an underground mine of 2000tpd, an open pit operation moving 210,000tpd and a complex metallurgical plant treating an average of 16,500tpd of ore. During the past years the operation had to address an array of issues relating to the "development" of the region and this is still ongoing. Development means different things to different people and though the parties that signed the different agreements relating to the Mining Development Contract were aware of this, none has real- ised the extent to which this is true. The developing company (a joint venture between Placer Pacific as the Manager, Goldfields Porgera, Highlands Gold and the Government of PNG), provided funds for risky exploration and the capital for development of the project. Its shareholders ex- pect an economic and viable mine operation from the deposit to ensure them returns on their investment. The local people gave up their land, their isolated way of living and accepted to be out of their comfort zone for some time in anticipation of a better lifestyle and economic benefits in support of that lifestyle. The PNG Government has a leg in both camps and expects both outcomes at the same time. The Government is also the regulator and expects compliance on top of that. If development in general is to be successful, all parties must substantially satisfy all expectations. It is evident that the outcome of some elements of development are reasonably defined (i.e. develop a viable mine to exploit the deposit), whilst other elements are moving targets (i.e. a better lifestyle). The seeds for conflict are thus abundantly present and to resolve them requires the will of all parties in all areas to come to a solution. This path to problem solving is many times torturous as each party comes from a different culture and background and has a different understanding of the parameters in the equation.

Pyrrhotite is pyrophoric when in a finely divided form. The problems of disposing of large quantities of finely divided pyrrhotite separated out by metallurgical processing from ore are formidable. In the case of an underground mine, a solution to the problem of disposal is to place the pyrrhotite in the stoped out areas and seal from any air supply. Further, the pyrrhotite could be diluted with tailings which would reduce the possibility of combust- ion. Several enquiries to various centres and authorities have shown that the products of the slow oxidation of pyrrhotite with moisture present can cement an inert matrix into a stable fill similar in physical prop- erties to fill stabilised with Portland cement. Stabilised fill can be used to advan tage with a suitable mining method to provide high recovery. The investigation demonstrated that air and 15% w/w water must be present for the fill to harden and that the sizing of the particles is a critical factor in drainage of a hydraul- ically placed fill and subsequent even harden- ing of the fill in a stope. With the materials used in the experiments in which the - 51 micron component of the tailings had been dis- carded, an optimum mix was found to contain 4:1 tailings/slag ratio and an overall pyrr hotite concentration of 8% (all proportion by weight). Approximately 34 days after drain- age to 15% moisture in natural air flow condit- ions, an unconfined compressive strength of 1.862 MPa was attained. A subsequent experi- ment was conducted with a sample of optimum mix in a pipe one metre long in forced air flow conditions. At a superficial velocity of 3.Om per hour the mix required 155 hours to harden to 1.862 MPa after drainage to 15% w/w moisture content. The pressure drop bet- ween the top and bottom of the mix in the pipe remained constant at 9 KPa/metre length. This result suggests that forced air flow conditions will increase the rate of hardening. No dangerous effluents were detected in the course of the experiments which could affect mine equipment or personnel.

Vitrinite of humic source (often designated as vitrinite A) is the maceral by which the rank of a coal ought to be determined. Therefore its recognition, and the precise identification of other vitrinites is essential. The majority of Australian petrologists are not differentiating between the vitrinite group macerals in maturation studies, the results of which have led to unexplained phenomena in coal characterisations and evaluation, such as 'reactive inertinites' and inaccurate predictions in petroleum source rock studies. The Callide coal has been chosen as a case study, with examples from other coals. The coal seams from the Callide Coal Measures show variation in the predominance of some macerals, indicating successions of environmental changes. The application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the study of the Callide coal has enabled a better understanding of the nature and origin of some of the less understood macerals such as micrinite and vitrinite B. Two forms of vitrinite have been observed, each with a distinct reflectance range. The wood-sourced vitrinite A displays an average reflectance of 0.56 per cent, and a range of 05. - 0.7, implying a higher rank than the 0.49 per cent Ro total vitrinite reflectance recorded in previous publications. Vitrinite B is one of the most commonly-occurring macerals in the Callide coal. The lower-reflecting vitrinite B which forms bands, often several hundred microns in thickness, in TEM appears to be electron transparent lipid rich. Vitrinite B is interpreted to represent accumulations of leaves, and is believed to be a major source of hydrocarbons in Australian sedimentary basins. The Callide coal has entered the oil window, and oil has been generated from some exinite, cutinite, and resinite, as evident from the amber to light brown fluorescence of exinite and the presence of exsudatinite in cell cavities and cleats. However vitrinite B, the major potential source of oil, is seen under the microscope to be generating oil, thus placing this coal at the top of the oil window. Micrinite, the origin of which has been much debated, occurs as cell filling or infill of spaces between laminations in vitrinite B.

The Australian Constitution specifies certain powers of the Commonwealth Government to be used in its capacity as the national government. Certain of these broad powers result in the Com- monwealth having a facility to play an important part in the development of the mining industry. The State Governments, however, by virtue of their wide powers to regulate matters within the boundaries of a particular State, are more directly involved in the day to day administration and standards of activities of mining operations. In this respect the Common- wealth has something of a dual role because of its "State-like" responsibilities for the mainland Terri- tories. The components of the role that the Common- wealth Government discharges in relation to the mining industry are qualified to varying extents at particular times by the political persuasion of the Government. In absolute terms the components are as follows. 1. Economic management. The Commonwealth's fiscal and monetary policies have an important effect on industry as well as on State finances. In particular, the taxation regime employed by the Commonwealth Government is of direct importance to economic decision-makers in the mining industry. 2. International matters. International trade and commodity matters are, more and more, becoming an everyday part of the conduct of a nation's foreign affairs. 3. Exports. The Commonwealth Government, via the constitutional powers over overseas trade, have exercised varying degrees of control over mineral exports to achieve particular objectives. 4. Foreign capital and investment. Australia in general, and the mining industry in particular, is and will continue to be a net importer of capital. There appears to be bipartisan political agreement in Australia that foreign investment policy must be enunciated to ensure that investors. are in no doubt that Australia welcomes beneficial investment and technology from overseas. 5. Environment and Aborigines. Governments, both Commonwealth and State, have in recent years become more involved in these areas in response to their interpretations of community aspirations. 6. Energy. Access to assured supplies of energy is now viewed, by Governments worldwide, as a desirable asset to ensure the well-being of a nation's people and industries.

The past decade has seen a great increase in activity in deep seismic reflection profiling of the continental crust. Some 20 countries have conducted field experiments and the total length of deep seismic profiles surveyed to date is approximately 25,000 km. This total is very large compared to the quantity of such data that existed previously, but very small compared to the total length of seis- mic profiles of the shallow crust carried out for petroleum exploration, which some- times has exceeded 600,000 km on land in one year alone and 1,600,000 km/yr on land and sea. Furthermore, 25,000 km of seismic pro- filing corresponds to exploration of only a tiny fraction of the total volume of the entire continental crust. Thus at this stage of development of the subject, one must be wary of generalizations that are based on these limited data and then ex- tended in scope to include the crust everywhere. The state of the subject is such that virtually every new seismic line reveals totally unexpected seismic fea- tures, a sign that the subject is in its major discovery phase and a warning to the generalizers. Nevertheless, in addition to much new information on deep crustal structure in specific locations, some broad consequences of application of this powerful geophysical technique to a region of the earth not pre- viously explored in this manner are be- coming clear. One is that, as seismic data on the deep continental crust become more abundant and more revealing of complexi- ties, the deep crust can be far better re- lated to rocks at the surface. Conse- quently, the geological style of reason- ing is now being extended from its normal domain of the near-surface to include the deepest crust in a comprehensive story of the evolution of the continents. This change is a subtle but important one and is evident, for example, in some cross sec- tions of the North American Transect Pro- gram, which show surface geology extended in a consistent, though speculative, manner to the top of the mantle. A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

The applicability of environmental geotechnics for erosion management is increasing in importance worldwide. The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmental legislation has been receiving increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental legislative agencies and members of the public. This is because of the need to increase the reliability of erosion prediction and in the minimisation of costs for spoil dump design. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. Engineering design of mine spoil dumps seeks to reduce the potential for such erosion damage through correct selection of an initial stable landform scheme (Goh, 1997). The design of mine spoil dumps must also conform to the specifications of evolving legislation. The Queensland Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS) states that, for minimised degradation of the surface area due to erosion during the development of a project, the erosion rates should be between 12 - 40 tonnes/hectare/year and that the depths of rills and gullies be limited to less than 30 cm (QDPI, 1988). The aim of engineering design is to ensure the long-term stability of the spoil dumps. The implementation of effective planning and operating procedures through recontouring and grading assists in the reshaping of spoil dumps to a safe, stable and non-erodible environment.

A new national-scale geochemical survey is under way inAustralia with the aim to provide energy and mineral explorers with state-of-the-art precompetitive data and information about the continentÆs potential resources. This low-density geochemical survey will provide a national geochemical data layer using consistent sampling medium and sampling, preparation and analytical methods. Large-scale geochemical patterns thus revealed are expected to point to new areas of exploration potential. The project is funded under the Onshore Energy Security Program. It is hoped that this new national geoscience dataset will help make Australia a more attractive destination for energy and mineral exploration investments.
