As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

Laboratory studies of batch and continuous screening of ferrous sinter mixtures (4-0.5 mm) are described. The results are analysed by an equation derived from the first-order rate law for the condition of decreasing screen residue.The results of the studies show that the two screening operations are comparable in all respects if deck length in continuous screening and time in batch screening are interchanged.It is shown that the general screening process is determined by the numerical values of the screening rate constants of each of the particle sizes in the feed mixture and that the relationship between these constants and the particle size/screen aperture ratios is related to the appropriate probability function of the same ratios.It is also shown that the screening rates decrease exponentially with the amount of near-mesh material present in the feed and that oversize particles can increase these screening rates for some screen motions and decrease them for others.

Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970's emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of preconcentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal sub systems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry.

Scaling in Bayer Refineries is a natural consequence of the super-saturated liquors used in the process. The caustic liquor is supersaturated not only with alumina but also silica and calcia at various stages of the process. The basic scaling mechanisms are reviewed and examples of the two basic types, growth and settled scales, are given. Examples include gibbsite scales formed in the precipitators and silica scales formed in heat exchangers. The main factors affecting the rate of growth of growth scales are temperature and supersaturation and are highlighted using a silica scale example. For growth scales chemical cleaning rates can readily be predicted from kinetics and an example for a gibbsite scale is given. For settled scales the growth rate cannot be predicted and the hydrodynamics within the system have most effect. There is no simple method to predict the potential for chemical cleaning of settled scales; some of the relevant issues are discussed, in particular methods to identify the cementing phase in the scale. An example of design considerations for a scaling system, transport of slaked lime, is Given.

A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

Following a detailed assessment of concen trator performance at Broken Hill South Limited which was reported in a previous paper, the fine grinding section was changed from a parallel arrangement of the two grinding circuits to a series arrangement, and the concentrator per- formance re-assessed. The change to series grinding had virtually no effect on the actual or potential capacity of the circuit to make a final product with 80% passing 100 mesh. However, the fresh flotation feed contained significantly less +150 mesh lead and +65 mesh zinc (material which was shown to float poorly), without an increase in the quantity of poor-floating ultra-fine lead and zinc. From the size-by-size flotation recovery data, it was shown that overall recoveries of both lead and zinc were approximately 1% higher than they would have been without this change in size distribution and it was concluded that this was a direct result of the change in grind- ing procedure.

Would you give your views on what type of training is most effective to improve the safety consciousness of "new" New Australians?Mr. Lewis: For many jobs, the expendable gauze respirators are quite satisfactory. However, where silica dust of less than 10 micron sizing is present, they Cannot be recommended. Generally, they are more acceptable to the men than the heavier but more efficient types of industrial respirator.The best avenues of approach to training appear to be:(a) Liberal use of vi~ual aids (posters, photos, slides, etc.)(b) Efficient interpreter service.(c) Constant follow-up and check by foreman and fellow workmen.Mr. W.Marsden (B.H.P. Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit. A 12,500 kW. set is being installed and proposed loading with the increased tonnage will require the 12,500 kW. set and one 5,000 kW. set, or alternatively, the three 5,000 kW. sets When the 12,500 kW. set is down for service. When the original plant was installed some 25 years ago, the switches selected and installed in the main 3,300 V. power plant switchboard were rated at 150 MVA and the substation distributing centres located at the surface of the mine, in the mill, and in the smelter, were purchased as having a rupturing capacity of 100 MVA, and the stator...

In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

As mining and extraction processes improve and lower grade ores become economic, mining for most ores have extended to depths beneath the zone of weathering oxidation created over geological history. These deeper openings expose sulphidic formations and reduced mineral species as either primary ore or simply as accessory or gangue minerals in the country rock. This is not new, underground mining for primary base metal and gold have long been familiar with these problems, as have coal and uranium miners. The change is simply that the number of mines exposing sulphidic waste rocks, tailings to the atmosphere and/or leaving behind dewatered sulphidic rock surrounding the mine void has increased the number of sites from where acid mine drainage (AMD) may emanate with consequential problems for the hydrological environment including downstream catchments (Miller et al, 1996). The principles of ecologically sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987) have been more or less ratified by all the developed nations of the world and this has led, amongst other things, to an expansion unprecedented in the research and documentation of means for achieving long-term environmentally acceptable stabilisation of solid wastes of all sorts. These have revealed that AMD problems can be minimised and even reversed in many cases by the integration or co-disposal of biodegradable organic wastes with oxidising sulphidic wastes (Elliott et al, 1996). This paper considers how this might be achieved at mine sites in Australia and the results encountered at some relevant sites.

In the course of an exploration program aimed at increasing Pasminco Mining's ore reserves, an electromagnetic survey down one of the underground drillholes at the North Mine, Broken Hill, recorded a broad and persistent response. This paper demonstrates that the anomaly was not due to any geological feature, but rather was caused by 'self-response' of the sensing probe. The observed results are due to the surveyed hole lying within a resistive environment and having distinct, but not unusual, changes in dip.This phenomenon has not been widely reported and we believe that there are likely to be similar cases in company records where very genuine looking responses are due to self-response rather than sulphides. These false anomalies can be recognised by correlating the observed data with the calculated down-hole component of the transmitting loop's primary field.

The Browns Creek deposit is located 8 kin west of Blayney and 220 km west of Sydney (Figure 1), at lat 33¦32'S, long 149¦10'E on the Bathurst (SI 55-8) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. The total measured, indicated and inferred resource at 30 June 1997 was 1.29 Mt at 6.39 g/t gold and 0.45 per cent copper. During the 1996 - 97 year 263 557 t of ore at 6.30 g/t gold and 0.48 per cent copper was treated, to produce 47 496 oz of gold, and 1 169 t of contained copper in concentrate. As the result of an increase in the resources and reserves, because of underground exploration drilling and accelerated mine development, 1997 production at Browns Creek is predicted to expand from 240 000 to 390 000 tpa, to yield more than 70 000 oz of gold per year.

The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating the treatment of refractory gold ores. Chlorination in the treatment of refractory gold ores is applicable in many low-grade gold operations. When usable, this treatment provides an economic means of consuming sulfides and deactivating disseminated organic carbon. Chlorination, however, is a pretreatment technique that requires the neutralization of the chlorine prior to leaching the ore with cyanide. Research by the Bureau has extended the present chlorination technology to allow for the recovery of gold without the use of cyanide and allow treatment of some ores presently deemed untreatable by gold operators using cyanidation or chlorination/cyanidation techniques. Chlorination without carbon of two carbonaceous ores extracted between 1 and 20 pct of the gold; however, carbon-in-chlorine (CICL) treatments resulted in about 90-pct recovery with a reduction in carbon loading. A statistical design campaign for stripping metallic gold from the carbon loaded in a chlorine environment demonstrated elutions exceeding 90 pct.

Until recently, nickel laterite projects have been largely ignored, due to their supposedly higher treatment costs compared with sulphides, and to their perceived processing difficulties. A number of laterite projects in the 1970s were abandoned because of high capital and operating costs, while others experienced severe technical difficulties. Conventional wisdom had it that laterites would not be exploited until most of the sulphide orebodies had been depleted. Why then, have Australian mining and exploration companies started a resurgence of interest in the treatment of nickel laterites? It all began with the Bulong project, which has been under study since 1987, while more recently two further projects, Murrin Murrin and Cawse, have been initiated and are being fast-tracked to take advantage of the current high nickel and cobalt prices. A further project in NSW, Syerston, has also been investigated at bench-scale, but no further development has yet been announced. All these projects have the following advantages: 1. Good location near a major mining centre and,reasonably close to power, water, roads, accommodation and a developed service industry. 2. Straightforward, low cost mining. 3. Low cost of acid or sulphur. 4. Good to very good cobalt credits. In addition, there have been significant technological developments in the design and operation of high pressure autoclaves and high rate thickeners, as well as solvent extraction and electrowinning technology. This has helped to decrease capital costs and technical risks, and has allowed the development of alternative flowsheets to the existing laterite operations (Taylor, 1996).

With the use of 86 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt. Lyell Mining & Hailway Co., it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5,000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts noted on this line. (See l"ig. 1.) Thus at a glance it is possible to see... the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this difficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component. As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5,000 feet bored. (See Fig. 2.) The curves so obtained are particularly interesting for two reasons:1. Each machine has its characteristic curve.2. The curve always steepens.Some machines are found to have relatively flat curves, others flat curves for approximately 15,000 feet of boring, and others steep gradients from the begining.This demonstrates that it is not always economic to discard a drill after it has been in service for a certain length of time or after it has bored a specified number of feet. Each drill has its own characteristics and so must not be regarded as one of a class, but considered on its own performance.The following use of these curve diagrams has been made to determine whether a machine has reached the end of its economic life. An improved technique for the quick and accurate measurement of the weight and centre of mass in the horizontal plane of large machines has been developed. On-site weighing of large plant such as bucket wheel dredgers is an important part of the commissioning procedure. The results from the weighing assist in determining the stability of the machine and also enable confirmation of the structural weight distribution used for stress analysis at the design stage. In this paper the techniques previously used for weighing are reviewed and the sources of error using these methods examined. A full descrip- tion of the current technique and procedure is given explaining how the measurement system comprising strain gauge load cells, displacement transducers, wind speed and direction sensors, data logger, computer and software was developed to enable quick and accurate measurements to be made. Proposed modifications to software necessitated by the replace- ment of current measuring instrumentation and computer are discussed. A typical example of measurements from the weighing of a large dredger, illustrating the accuracy of the new technique is given and the calibration technique used to check the accuracy of the force and moment measurements is explained. An outline of how the results are used to certify the machine for operation is given.

Understanding how liberated and unliberated minerals behave in comminution and classification circuits is of vital importance to ensure that maximum liberation occurs without unnecessary and costly overgrinding. This paper presents the results of a study carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre and Newcrest Mining of the liberation performance of Newcrest Mining's New Celebration grinding circuit. Using data from surveys of the circuit, together with QEM*SEM analyses of individual streams, a detailed picture of the liberation and classification of gold-associated pyrite is presented. In addition the relationship between the QEM*SEM analyses and results from laboratory leach tests are also discussed. Using the survey and QEM*SEM data, mathematical models were constructed of the performance of the ball mill and cyclones, and simulations carried out to investigate ways of improving the performance of the circuit. The results from the more promising scenarios are Reviewed.

Competitive commercial circumstances internationally provide a prime impetus for miners to seek new technologies as a means to profitability and survival. Engineering and project management activities play a vital role in establishing, operating and developing the capital facilities used by miners. Computer based technologies are the single most important technology for maintain- ing competitiveness in engineering and project management into the future. Current applications of computers in engineering design and drafting are finding economic applications, computer-aids are more readily introduced, accepted and profitable. Computing technology is advancing very rapidly and on a broad front in hardware, software and communications. This technology advance is improving the ability of engineers and project managers to provide a high quality, responsive and low cost service which will improve in parallel with computer technology. As this technology advances, a key challenge is created for managers in selecting hardware and software, in developing people and organisations and in marketing the technology to advantage. While the future holds many exciting developments, people will still hold the key roles. While the nature of their roles may change, the final acceptance or rejection of technology will be by people, whether as users or owners, who will judge on the basis of whether their stake is improved or not.
