Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. Canadian mining research has recently been reinvigorated through a pan-Canadian research strategy driven by the industry, the research community and government departments. These organisations have come together to form the Canada Mining Innovation Council, whose role is to focus and increase mining research in the country. One of the major themes of the organisation is environment; including major research initiatives on energy, tailings and environmental stewardship. Other major initiatives on exploration, mineral extraction and mineral processing will also consider environmental benefits in the research projects they undertake. All the initiatives have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. Membership to date includes most of the major mining companies operating in Canada and almost all of the mining-related universities. This paper present a modification of selected strength criteria for coal and rocks containing weakness planes. The three strength criteria, namely, Murrell (1965), Bieniawski (1974a, 1983) and Hoek and Brown (1980) have been assessed for coal (containing weakness planes) by using triaxial strength tests. Triaxial test results indicated that the strength of coal specimens depends on the weakness plane inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of coal specimens is reduced. The constant parameters in the three failure criteria for coal are determined for each weakness plane inclination by using the Datafit computer program (nonlinear regression analysis) and the results are compared with other rock types.

In this study, aimed at two kinds of ore (lump ore and iron ore fines) and four types of Australian iron ore resources (haematite iron ore, Mara Mamba iron ore, limonite iron ore, and mixed iron ore, such as Newman, MAC, Yandi and Pilbara iron ore), the physical and chemical properties and high-temperature properties were investigated in detail, to master their behaviour and effects in sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes. Then, according to the individual properties of Australian iron ores, Chinese domestic iron ores and Brazilian iron ores, etc, the optimisation of ore-proportioning for sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes was studied based on the interaction of the individual iron ores and their complementary properties, and the corresponding tests were carried out. The test work results indicated that this method not only improved the technical and economic indexes of sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes, but also increased the addition of Australian iron ore. All of these provide the theoretical basis and technical support for highly effective use of Australian iron ore resources in iron and steel enterprises in China.

Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

"Three issues of relevance in a modern tailings storage facility (TSF) are:geotechnical stabilitymanaging acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic tailingsmanaging the tailings from cyanidation of gold ores. Drawing on examples from both copper porphyry flotation and sulfide-hosted gold ores, this paper demonstrates that giving some weight and importance to the process tails properties upfront can influence the flow sheet and not only improve tailings management effectiveness but also impact positively on economics. In the case of a typical copper porphyry ore with moderate pyrite content, the rougher tail in a conventional high pH selective flotation step is usually classified as potentially acid generating (PAG). To avoid the generation of ARD within the tailings and the requirement for a costly plastic lining, subaqueous deposition is recommended, which in turn has negative implications for tailings stability, consolidation and closure. Adopting a neutral pH rougher stage rejects silicate gangue but recovers pyritic material to the cleaners for a subsequent selective flotation stage, often after regrinding. This effectively quarantines the PAG pyritic material in a much lower volume cleaner tail, which can then be appropriately encapsulated within a larger non-lined flotation tails facility. It also facilitates cyanide leaching of the cleaner tail for gold recovery, with the encapsulated tailings facility being suitable for cyanidation tails storage. A case study from Europe is examined. For gold ores where the gold is sulfide-hosted, but not refractory, a flotation route with cyanidation of the concentrate can similarly produce the majority of tailings as a benign flotation tail and again quarantine the low volume concentrate leach tail in a small encapsulated cell with appropriate residual cyanide management measures applied. Overall economics for intensive leaching of a low volume concentrate stream can also be surprisingly positive. A feasibility study design example of the process and TSF is presented. A research project to better understand the rock mass behaviour and the seismic response has been conducted during the design and construction of the 9215 level at the E-Block sector of the Northern Star Kanowna Belle Mine. The research program was undertaken at a tunnel located 1100 m below the surface with the results applicable to feasibility studies on underground mining projects in highstress conditions, where failure can occur very soon after tunnel construction. Semi-circular excavation shapes coupled with the use of de-stress blasting techniques were designed to monitor the excavation in conditions of very high stress. The ground support was designed considering high energy dissipation ground support schemes (HED) as described by Arcaro et al (2021). The results indicate a decreased rock mass demand due to the change of excavation shape. Also, localised reduction in rock mass stiffness was achieved due to the implementation of de-stress blasting. Finally, increased ground support capacity was gained by the implementation of the high energy dissipation ground support schemes. The Kanowna Belle Mine has significant ore reserves at depths exceeding 1000 m below the surface. The results of this research will be used to optimise the extraction of the remaining E Stoping Block at depths exceeding 1350 m.

The Porgera gold mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, produced 7.7 Moz of gold between 1990 and 1998. Reserves are estimated to be 12 Moz of Au. The deposit is associated with 6 Ma-old mafic alkalic intrusions emplaced at shallow levels into unconsolidated Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments, where they caused the formation of peperites. The mineralisation consists of an earlier base-metal-sulphide-rich stage with sericite-carbonate alteration (stage I), and a later phase represented by quartz-roscoelite veins (stage II). New styles of mineralisation and alteration have been recognised at depth in association with stage I. They consist of the assemblages magnetite-chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite and biotite-actinolite-anhydrite respectively. In addition, the recent recognition of adularia in some stage II veins (with roscoelite) confirms the similarity of this style of mineralisation with other adularia-sericite or low-sulphidation epithermal deposits.

Outsourcing of mining operations and services is done for various reasons and there is no single model which fits all situations. Experienced contractors and mine owners have also developed, more often than not, jointly, numerous commercial arrangements and project delivery methods to suit their particular project. It is often the case that some mine owners who have not considered outsourcing to contractors do so because of a simple lack of understanding of the potential benefits. This paper will highlight the potential benefits and perceived disadvantages of outsourcing for mine owners and demonstrate how these issues have been addressed by the mining contracting community over recent times as well as demonstrate the evolution of current commercial arrangements in engaging mining contractors.

The Southern Mines Rescue Station (S.M.R.S.) has been established for 55 years and in the past 15 years has had only 4 major call-outs. Whilst the mines rescue training program has continued to expand, the Station has become involved in other work which includes mine worker training and limited research. Notwithstanding, the prime role of the Mines Rescue Station has not been overlooked and the Station has only advanced with the many changes that have occurred in the coal industry. The Rescue Station activities are financed by contributions from Colliery proprietors and the aim of the S.M.R.S. Committee is to provide a service in which colliery management and mine workers will have a high degree of confidence.

The 1100 Orebody is the main copper production area of Isa Mine with an output of 390 000 tonnes per four week period and a work force of approximately 260 men per shift. Currently a total of 56 nippers work a three shift, five day week roster to-service crews spread over a strike length of 1000 m and a vertical height of 220 in. A variety of rail and diesel equipment provides shaftto cribroom and cribroomto sublevel work place transport of men and materials. Overall eficiency and safety has been improved with a selected group performing supply, storage, clean-up and "bus runs" throughout the orebody - activities which are further co-ordinated by an FM radio system linking units with a control clerk.

Reasons for appointing a separate project team to manage a project are established. The selection of a project manager, based on the services they can provide and on their characteristics, skills and management style, is discussed. The consequences of selecting the wrong project manager are explored. A broad overview of the requirements for the project team is provided. Criteria for the selection of team members, and the role played by the project manager in this selection, are discussed. The levers that drive `on-time and on-budget' projects are discussed in terms of the project's vision, goals, controls, and incentives.

High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. Converter slag assaying 3.7 per cent Cu is produced by Mount Isa copper smelter at a rate of up to 180 000 tonnes per annum.Priority is given to the processing of ore, however concentrator capacity periodically exceeds that of the mine and the opportunity is taken to treat converter slag. It is processed in batch campaigns, typically through the Copper Concentrator, but the Hilton Concentrator has also been used. Slag and ore are kept as separate as possible, since each has an adverse effect on the flotation performance of the other.

The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

In the processing of refractory gold-bearing sulfides, pressure oxidation (POX) is commonly known for its role in liberating the gold in solid-solution via oxidation of the sulfide occlusions. For deposits that contain arsenic-bearing species including arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite, POX serves an important secondary function in the fixation of arsenic, via the hydrothermal precipitation of stable arsenates such as scorodite and basic ferric arsenate sulfate (BFAS). There have been various investigations on the impact of different POX conditions on arsenic precipitation and the stability of the formed phases, but less is known about the changes to the arsenic carrier that occur in the curing stage, which follows directly from POX. The primary function of curing is to coax the dissolution of sulfates to reduce lime consumptions during cyanide leaching, and the slurry is kept at elevated temperatures near 100°C to achieve this. While the arsenic-bearing phases are expected to undergo transformation during this stage, there has thus far been limited experimental evidence. In this study, the effect of curing time and curing temperature on the arsenic-bearing species and arsenic deportment in the POX product has been investigated. Leaching of the curing products was also conducted to examine the stability of the arsenic species in the solid precipitates.

Although several models for the surface tension of molten oxide slag have been proposed, suitably accurate predictions of this property are not yet possible. The surface tension, or surface excess free energy, of molten oxides is largely determined by the ionic coordination induced by surface relaxation. However, the associated mechanism of surface structural relaxation for molten oxide mixtures such as slag is complex and not yet fully understood. To allow a better evaluation of surface relaxation characteristics, the present work analysed the ionic coordination associated with the surface-relaxed states of several oxide mixtures. This work especially focused on calcium aluminate slags because these materials exhibit complex relationships between composition and surface tension. The effects of incorporating low concentrations of SiO2 as a surface active component on the surface ionic coordination were also examined. X-ray absorption techniques were used to assess oxygen and cationic elements in glassy samples after surface relaxation treatments, and molecular dynamics simulations based on a polarisable ion model of molten slag with vacuum/melt interfaces were also performed. The X-ray absorption techniques provided data related to electron yields (which are primarily associated with surface features) and fluorescence yields (which evaluate the bulk material). Thus, the ionic coordination characteristics of both regions were investigated. The results of molecular dynamics calculations allowed statistical analysis of the distributions of Al- or Sicentred polymorphs as well as the bond angles between cations and oxygen anions in the vacuumexposed and bulk regions in the equilibrated melt. The results indicated that bridging oxygen ions were preferentially distributed in the relaxed surface region rather than non-bridging oxygens. These bridging oxygen ions represented vertex connections between AlO4 or SiO4 tetrahedra. In the case of the calcium aluminate slags, the addition of one Ca2+ ion as charge compensation for two Al3+ ions was found to be necessary to form two AlO4 tetrahedra. This specific feature of surface ionic coordination could be responsible for the complex trends observed in surface tension data. The incorporation of low concentrations of SiO2 reduced the proportion of tetrahedrally-coordinated Al ions such that higher coordination states become dominant in the bulk of the material, whereas AlO4 tetrahedra were preferentially distributed in the surface region. SiO4 tetrahedra were the preferred Si-centred polymorph and were likely connected to one another to form bridging oxygen ions at the surface. On the basis of these results, a model to predict slag surface tension was proposed, and the energy of the formation of the ionic clusters resulting from surface relaxation was taken into account.
