The European Union has listed vanadium (V) as one of the critical raw materials for the transition to a future green society, as stated in the Critical Raw Material Act, written by Grohol and Veeh (2023). In the steelmaking industry based on V-containing iron ore, V is a possible by-product from the slag. A requirement for slags to be suitable for V extraction is a V content preferably above 8 wt per cent as V2O3 and a phosphorus (P) content below 0.1 wt per cent as P2O5. Hence, it is important to keep V in the slag phase while the P is moved to the metal phase during the steelmaking process.

Following the Coalbrook Colliery disaster in 1960, Salamon and Munro (1967) established the well known empirical coal pillar strength formula in South Africa. This formula has prevented further violent multiple pillar failures. In 1996, a back analysis of the collapsed and uncollapsed cases in Australia led to the development of the Australian empirical coal pillar strength formulae. The original collapsed and uncollapsed coal pillar database of Salamon and Munro (1967) was updated in 2006. This study introduced various strength formulae for different coalfields and seams in South Africa through back analyses of collapsed and uncollapsed cases. Today, the resultant pillar strength formulae from these previous studies and the behaviour of coal pillars are mostly well understood and applied with confidence. However, it was assumed in the previous studies that the behaviour of pillars is not time dependent; therefore, the formulae established do not provide an associated time to failure of coal pillars. This paper attempts to evaluate the so called 'Geometrical Limits' concept to provide the Australian coal mining industry with a tool to assess the long-term behaviour of bord and pillar workings where the pillars are prone to failure due to spalling of ribs. In order to achieve this outcome, the principles of the safety factor concept and the probability of failure calculated using the coal pillar strength formulae have also been evaluated and practical design examples are presented in this paper.

This paper reviews the likelihood of instability occurring within coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines. In coal cargoes, initial moisture redistributes vertically towards the base, saturating the bottom layers unless the bilge wells are pumped regularly. There has been concern in some quarters that saturated coal in the basal layer may be prone to liquefaction, and if the vessel then rolls significantly in rough seas, overall sliding movement of the cargo might occur. However, a review of shipping accident statistics reveals that casualties relating to shifting of coal cargoes are quite rare, and have not occurred in modern large bulk carriers (>15 000 dwt). The moisture redistribution process has been analysed to quantify the extent of cargo saturation that may occur. Results indicate that the amount of redistribution increases with initial moisture content above a threshold of eight to nine per cent. However, the removal of water by pumping from the bilges is remarkably effective in reducing the extent of saturated coal (and therefore the possibility of cargo liquefaction and movement), and in controlling the average moisture content of the bottom layers of cargo. Stability analyses were then performed for deep sliding of a cargo with a saturated and liquefied base. These have confirmed that sliding of a cargo with a liquefied base during rough seas (20¦ roll angles) would require initial total moisture content exceeding 13 per cent, the hold half full or less (width/depth >3), and no bilge pumping so that height of the saturated zone is as deep as possible. Overall, the results indicate that coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines will be unlikely to suffer sliding or liquefaction failures when transported in modern large bulk carriers.

In this paper, an analysis is made of the present situation in the Chinese steel industry and its demand for iron ores. It is shown that the demand for iron ores has been growing substantially with the rapid development of the steel industry all over the world, especially in China. However, the iron ore market is currently in the situation where supply exceeds demand due to the economic crisis, with more investment in mines and less output of steel for several years ahead all over the world. Gigantic pressure is confronting the Chinese steel mills due to the too high and irrational price of iron ores. It is time to return the price of iron ores to a normal position much closer to their value. More attention has therefore been paid to developing low-grade and complex iron ore resources in China due to the irrational price of imported iron ores. More innovative mineral processing processes have been developed to tackle these complex resources. A systematic introduction to the development of beneficiation processes for low-grade iron ores is provided, including upgrading low-grade siderite, limonite, micron sized haematite and magnetite resources.

Increasing the throughput of the MMG Century operation by over 25% from past practice to preserve cash flow close to the end of life of mine has revealed new throughput and load dynamic instabilities in the SAG mill causing significant time averaged loss of production. A twelve microphone array around the SAG mill (Pax, 2014) using the non-contact acoustic measurement methodology (Pax, 2011, 2012) has been used to diagnose the new dynamics. Dynamic acoustic noise signal information allows discrimination of the behaviour of the steel balls and the rock. Determination of mill load, toe and shoulder angles, water holdup, and proxies for mill load are possible.The instability was diagnosed with the help of an abnormality in the liners/lifters of the SAG mill with one row of lifters having a slightly increased in-mill life compared to the rest. The steel shoulder angle is observed to be disturbed cyclically at a rate of precisely one revolution at low throughputs of 750 t/h. However, at throughputs closer to 1100 t/h, the cyclic signal disappears indicating additional dynamics to randomise the repetitive behaviour of the mill charge. The cyclic signal has been used to operate the SAG mill with improved stability at 1100 t/h by adjusting the feed water addition rate.This paper presents and discusses these results and proposes the suggested origin of the extra dynamics. "Phytostabilisation with tolerant plant species has been advocated as a cost-effective solution for sustainable cover of tailings from metal mines and bauxite refinery. The development of sustainable plant ecosystems on such wastes requires not only tolerant plant species compatible with local climatic conditions, but also the formation of stable and functional root zones through systematic processes to develop functional soil matrix and horizons (eg A-B-C). However, the process requirements for reconstructing functional root zones in tailings are poorly understood. Based on a review of current literature and industry experience in tailings revegetation, the present paper conceptualises three key phases in the process of root zone development in amended tailings: hydro-geochemical stabilisation resulting from the interactions among tailings characteristics, amendment measures and local climatic conditions the rehabilitation of soil biological capacity the establishment of ecological (carbon and nutrient) linkages between the rehabilitated root zones and the above ground plant communities.Key research is required on: the relationship between hydro-geochemical stability and mineralogy and geochemistry of tailings, in response to rehabilitation treatments under local climatic conditions the relationship between soil biological capacity and hydro-geochemical stability in the root zone the transition of soil microbial communities specific to exogenous organic matters into those required for mineralising litters of in situ plant communities.CITATION:Huang, L, Baumgartl, T, Edraki, M and Mulligan, D R, 2012. This paper describes the mining setting for the sub-level open stoping (SLOS) mining method used at Olympic Dam (OD), and investigates the range of stope performance conditions encountered over 30 years of production, using a qualitative description of the factors influencing performance. Utilising a continuous improvement tool, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) process, and a forward-looking rock mechanics program, the intent is to identify the key factors driving productivity and performance to create a stable and achievable long term mine plan.

This article presents a proposal for the rehabilitation of the mined area of the Mogiana quarry. The Mogiana quarry produces material used in civil construction and is situated in the Brazilian State of Spo Paulo in the kilometre six of the Mogf Mirim - Itapira highway. The mineral exploitation in the Mogiana quarry provokes modifications in the environment such as alterations in the relief, vegetation, quality of the air, water and landscape. Through previous study of the area it was verified that after the closure of the exploitation the mine should be occupied mainly by pasturage. At the closing of the mine the exploitation benches, berms and slopes in general as well as the surrounding areas should be covered with a layer of soil and vegetated with native species in order to mitigate the negative impacts caused by the mine. The rehabilitation project of the area is based on the probable future use of the area, located between agricultural cultivations and cattle creation. The great alteration of the relief and soil would make future use of the area for agriculture difficult. It is more suitable t0 animal creation, mainly cattle. The high and thick rock slopes originated by the mining should be covered by vegetation, where possible, to reduce the negative visual impact. Obviously several measures will be necessary to reduce the impacts on the environment during mining. The final and definitive reclamation will only be possible after abandonment of the area. The main aspects of this reclamation process will be discussed in this paper.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. Mengzi Mining and Metallurgy Co, Ltd (MMMC) polymetallic ore contains recoverable amounts of tin, lead, zinc, pyrite and other valuable minerals. With the change in orebody, the run-of-mine (ROM) ore changed from lead zinc rich ore to tin rich ore, where the current ROM ore contains 0.45–1.25 per cent tin, 20–25 per cent sulfur, and 0.20–0.35 per cent copper. The previous processing flow sheet was designed to recover lead zinc rich ore and it is clearly not suitable for recovery of the current tin rich ore, where the tin was already overground and tin recovery was only 50.19 per cent. The Mengzi Mining Company has recently modified the concentrator circuit by incorporating rod mill and high efficient Derrick fine screen. As a result of the improved classification efficiency, the overgrinding of the tin ore was minimised and the recovery of tin was improved by 20.71 per cent, ie from 50.19–70.90 per cent. In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag. The further expansion of New Zealand Steel's primary steelmaking capacity to replace the currently imported hot and cold flat rolled products is under consideration. The requirement to produce about 600 000 tonnes of steel slabs will be an opportunity to further modify iron and steel making plant and processes to optimise the economics. The conceptual and preliminary engineering selection of options is described.

The aim of any rock breaking activity is to achieve success by developing designs that are blasting objective-specific and geology-specific, and then implementing such designs. This paper targets mining geologists with the aim of extending their knowledge of the rock fragmentation processes and providing insights to the significant relationships between geology and blasting. There are two main relationships, and if mining geologists appreciate both these relationships, then they can play a key role in optimising production. The business risk continuum is introduced to support this understanding. The first relationship is between geology and potential blasting hazards, and the operational complexity required to manage those risks. The risks associated with eight different ground types are discussed in terms of ground conditions, hazards and controls. These types are: reactive ground, hot ground, geothermal ground, fibrous ground, cavernous ground, combustible ground, pyritic ground and conductive ground.The second relationship is between the bench geology and blasting results. The blasting results discussed include: muckpile characteristics, remaining rock faces and blasting emissions. In this regard, some detailed insights and graphical examples are given for the influence of geology on blasting emissions, in particular, vibration, airblast and flyrock.A detailed description of the geological materials themselves can convey much useful information for blasting operators provided they are able to utilise this knowledge. Geologists are ideally suited to provide this description more effectively if they are familiar with the blasting process and the rock mass properties that influence blasting hazards and blasting results. It is also important to have clear statements of blasting objectives and associated operational targets, and this will maximise the likelihood of achieving the desired outcomes. The main aim of the paper is to highlight that geology is currently not fully utilised in the blasting process. In this regard, geologists are often not entirely aware of the blasting process and how they can contribute. The two significant relationships discussed above are integral parts of this process, and thus they are discussed as separate issues in the main body of this investigation.

This paper describes the mining methods and strategy used to extract the 5 Orebody crown pillar at the Isa Lead Mine over the past five years. The bulk of the crown pillar was extracted by the use of sublevel open stope method. An uphole bench stope was mined to scavenge the remaining ore. Geomechanical issues associated with the crown pillar extraction are described. Stope sizes were gradually increased on a stope by stope basis. This has allowed the maximising of ore recovery while relevant risks were managed. The principles in designing ore rib pillars against various types of fill materials are also described.

Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises). In recent years in New Zealand there have been a number of tunnelling and deep directionally drilled pipelines projects that have required access shafts. Often these shafts are in urban environmentswhere vibration and high noise levels are not tolerable. There are a number of methodologies that can be adopted dependent upon the shaft plan area, depth and geology.This paper will describe some different methodologies that can be adopted that use piling methods such as large diameter piles, and secant piles. The paper will use case studies to highlight:· construction methodology,· specific methodology issues and constraints,· lessons learnt, and· recommended specifications.The development of piling technologies in New Zealand has enabled the development of cost effective solutions for the construction of deep shafts in sensitive urban environments.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016.
