Within the first full year of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine operation, the Lake Cowal Foundation Limited (LCF) has already been delivering results consistent with its goal to protect and enhance the natural environment of Lake Cowal and its catchment area. The LCF is a non-profit Environmental Trust established in June 2000 in conjunction with the development consent process for the construction of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine. Its primary goal is to protect and enhance Lake Cowal, a nationally significant ephemeral wetland located 350 km west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Significant concentrations of water birds visit the lake and the Australian Heritage Commission listed Lake Cowal on the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The LCF is managed by a Board of Directors from representative member organisations including the Total Environment Centre, National Parks Association, Nature Conservation Council and Barrick Australia Limited. Although largely funded by Barrick, the Foundation also attracts external funding and works in partnership with a diverse range of other groups and organisations, beyond the mine fence. The total value of currently approved projects is estimated to be in excess of $7.1 million, which includes æin-kindÆ contributions made by the local community and in particular the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (LCMA) and local farmers. To date, LCF has been involved with the development and implementation of 30 projects with a total of 34 project partners. LCF has worked with over 60 landholders to improve Lake Cowal and its catchment, with 6180 ha of land now being managed for conservation or sustainable farming in the local area. Many landholders have been, or are involved in property planning or participating in other training opportunities. Sustainability of LCF programs and outcomes will be assured by commitments to projects within four key themes: conservation, research and research support, sustainable farming and community education and training. The LCF works independently from the mining company and has no responsibility for the environmental management within the mining lease. It is about capitalising resources generated by the mine to enhance environmental outcomes in the wider Lake Cowal catchment area by working collaboratively with the local community, industry and government authorities to ensure the long-term protection of a unique wetland ecosystem affected by landscape scale degradation.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

The Golden Cross Mine will be the first underground gold mine in New Zealand to operate since 1952. The development plans, along with the conditions and circumstances presently found in the now ongoing mine development, will be discussed as well as a brief review of planned stoping activity and stoping results to date.

A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

Solid EnergyÆs Wangaloa open cast coal mine was operated between 1945 - 1989, and remained closed and disused until 2001 when SENZ initiated a mine rehabilitation programme. It is nearing the final stages of physical and environmental rehabilitation, aimed at creating an aesthetically pleasing and useful landscape. The final goals of these efforts are to produce an area, which has recreational and educational value. SENZÆs holistic approach to rehabilitation has been undertaken, treating the entire historical mine footprint instead of focusing only on those disturbed areas and the minimum range of issues just to meet with legal compliance. Rehabilitation at the site has included overburden modification with an emphasis on stability, removal and replacement of unhealthy and invasive plant species, and an AgLime amendment to alter soil pH conditions, which would support native plant species. To date, most ongoing activities relate to final planting and plant upkeep, and maintenance of the landform including ongoing erosion control, pest control, environmental monitoring, and research. Environmental quality concerns at the site may be treated by using a combination of methods, including regrading and capping of acid-generating pyrites, soil treatment with AgLime, and passive wetland treatment within existing water courses. Following major works, the mine site area may be opened to the public for recreational activities, interpretive displays on historical mining activities, and observation and appreciation for otherwise unseen geological features. SENZÆs holistic approach to reclamation, rather than treating minor issues, will result in the former mine site being transformed into an asset and the environmental and financial liability associated with the closed mine being discharged. Former mine sites can be turned from environmental liabilities with no recreational or public value (and potentially dangerous to life) into sites that can be safely used by the public for recreational and educational purposes.

Martabe gold and silver mine is operated by PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR) and is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain, and in a tropical climate, that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste rock from excavations and tailings from processing is a by-product to be scheduled and used for a number of purposes identified as part of life-of-mine planning. These uses include construction of the current integrated tailings storage facility (TSF) as well as future engineering construction and waste disposal projects which includes plans for a program of in-pit backfilling. These plans need to be aligned to ensure the waste rock and tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. Given that the site will have multiple open pit voids upon cessation of mining activities opportunities for integration of in-pit disposal of mine waste have now been assessed with technical studies to review the practicality of the approach with respect to operational challenges and conformance with closure planning requirements. This includes assessment of disposal of waste rock, tailings (including consideration of filtered tailings) and co-disposal of waste rock and filtered tailings.

A model has been developed as part of the AMIRA P420 Gold Processing Technology Project to simulate the recovery of gold by centrifugal gravity devices. The model (which is available online) uses the simulation methodology developed by Laplante et al (1995) to predict gravity recoverable gold (GRG) recovery under varying operating conditions and circuit configurations. In addition to predicting GRG recovery, the model also predicts the GRG content and size distribution of the cyclone overflow and underflow. The predicted overflow GRG content and size distribution can be used as inputs for a leaching model in which size dependent leaching rates are applied for each size class of GRG and non-gravity recoverable gold (non-GRG) in the cyclone overflow, allowing size-by-size leach recoveries to be determined for GRG and non-GRG. The application of the gravity model and leaching model are demonstrated using a case study. The simulated gravity recovery and leaching performance showed excellent agreement with the measured values. The developed models can be used to assess the sensitivity of gravity gold and leach recoveries to varying feed GRG content, GRG size distribution, gravity circuit feed rate, classifier performance and leach residence time. The described methods can be used to optimise new and existing gravity and leaching circuits.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. æSustainabilityÆ is one of those words that has gained more usage in popular discourse than in the dictionary. In fact it is not in many dictionaries at all. Typically, given this, it also seems to mean different things depending on whose lips it emerges from. It is now like a code word in that if people say it, you donÆt have to think about its meaning; it is just æthereÆ and is taken for granted. This is a problem for the mining industry as we are now using the term too and to be effective in what we do, we need to have a reality check and see how those outside who have views on us (æstakeholdersÆ maybe) use it. The core issue seems to be æsustainability of whatÆ: the industry?, a company?, the global environment?, particular ecosystems?, the community? At these levels, the term seems almost meaningless. If we do not even agree on what it is, at least broadly, our communication and possible partnerships for going forward will be difficult to say the least. One reference to æsustainÆ in my thesaurus is: æTo keep from failing during stress or difficultyÆ. This may be a clue to something approaching a common notion. I suggest that to use æsustainabilityÆ we make the following assumptions:that we are talking about human activity aimed at making a living that has an impact on the natural and social environment; that humans must make a living (though what this needs to include is problematic); that the impact of particular activities has been problematic to date and needs to be monitored, altered, stopped, etc; that there is stress on both social and natural environments; and that change can be effected in order that particular activities such as mining minimise their negative effects and maximise their positive. This is why we are taking part in sessions such as this one today. Two more initial observations: First, it strikes me that even with the above assumptions laid out, æsustainabilityÆ and æsustainable developmentÆ are too abstract and general as concepts. We have to break these high and mighty ideals down into workable, bite-size chunks, into practical ways of dealing with the world outside our sites and companies. Second, sustainability, on both sides of the fence, too often focuses on nature and environment as though they are independent of people and community. I would argue, perhaps provocatively, that sustainability is primarily a people issue and has to be tackled as such. I want to look at the overall climate for business today and how it has responded before I return to what we can and need to do as the mining industry to make æsustainabilityÆwork.

The Favona low-sulfidation epithermal deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield is less than one kilometre southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The veins are hosted by Miocene andesite of the Waipupu Formation, have a total strike length of over 900 m, a vertical extent of at least 350 m and are on average 1-3 m wide. Individual veins have been traced for 200 m with vein widths up to 25 m. The dominant vein textures are massive, crustiform and colloform banded veins and vein breccias, with subsidiary textures including comb, zonal, flamboyant, lattice-bladed, ghost-bladed, microbotryoidal, feathery, ripple and dune, and mosaic. Quartz is the dominant gangue mineral in the veins at Favona. Accessory gangue minerals include pyrite, chlorite, adularia, illite, calcite, and apatite. Electrum is the only gold-bearing mineral and is associated with acanthite, tetrahedrite, pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and rare galena. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that gold grades correlate with textures/vein types. The highest gold and silver grades are associated with vein breccias and banded veins, with the former containing 28 g/t Au and 136 g/t Ag on average. To date, veins with significant base metal sulfide minerals, and massive and crystalline quartz veins lack significant precious metals (Au and Ag), except for one banded base metal sulfide-rich vein at Favona. An overall zonation of the veins exists, with base metal sulfide minerals dominant at depth (1050 m RL) of the system are characterised by massive quartz veins.Fluid inclusions from a total of 31 quartz, amethyst, and platy calcite veins reveal homogenisation temperatures of ~190-250¦C, with final ice melting temperatures between 0.0 and -0.8. Ice melting temperatures correspond to apparent salinities of 18O value of the water that formed these veins is approximately -4.3 per mil, which is similar to meteoric water-dominated, near neutral chloride fluids in geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

Recent lignite investigations indicate their potential as a strategic long-term fuel resource. This potential however would be determined not only by lignite quantity and quality, but also by economic, physical and social resources required to support it. The following discussion uses the example of a typical lignite mining operation to review the major resource requirements. While recognising that the implications of supplying those resources may be as important as their actual existence, this paper has purposely omitted such discussion as this will be one of the main target areas for the next phase of investigations.

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. Large mining operations require a high percentage of the capital invested in mobile and fixed mining machinery. From an investment point of view this expenditure must be met by an equally high rate of return, thus the need for high plant and equipment reliability is of major importance. Equipment downtime is undesirable and very costly, resulting in lost production and revenue, which is of critical importance to successful mining operations. One of the solutions to this problem may be found in the form of competent computerised maintenance management software systems, which help to reduce the problem of breakdowns. These software assist the engineers for the management of service orders, resource allocation, progress monitoring as well as costing. They also facilitate the communication of targets and objectives among the service personnel. A computerised maintenance management software called MAINPAC was used to record and plan the activities of mobile equipment maintenance in a large mining operation in Western Australia. Among the details recorded were equipment data, service history, machine downtimes, previous maintenance, job planning and the resource required. This information further helped to analyse the maintenance efficiency, availability and the reliability of the equipment.

WMC was a late entrant into Indonesia in mid-1996, but had considerable experience and success in exploring in Asia, particularly the Philippines since 1988. Given the geological similarities to the Philippines and IndonesiaÆs superior æcradle to graveÆ Contract of Work (CoW) tenure system, the entry into Indonesia was a logical decision but nonetheless a result of detailed planning. At the time of WMCÆs entry, Busang in Kalimantan was still a 60 moz wonder and the euphoria of this apparent discovery had overflowed into every aspect of exploration. Many junior mining companies and tenement speculators were clamouring for properties in Kalimantan, whilst other serious and capable explorers had to compete for properties and exploration personnel in an era of high and often unrealistic expectations. The picture in late-1998 and through 1999 is dramatically different, as the worldwide downturn in the price of most metals coincides with financial and social crises throughout most Asian countries. The impact of this has been particularly severe in Indonesia and when coupled with the negative sentiment of the Busang fraud has resulted in an exodus of junior companies and also some of the majors. This is understandable given the much publicised social unrest, uncertainty of government, mooted changes to the eighth generation CoW, increasing illegal mining and heightened community expectations. The reality however is somewhat different and although clearly a crisis in many respects, it is also a time of great opportunity.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

As the iron ore/magnetite boom gains momentum, it is particularly important to question established past trends and explore the potential of alternative design options. Traditionally, ‘rule of thumb’ methods have been used to size dewatering equipment. Greater consideration needs to be given to technological advancements and specific throughput testing of each ore body type based on innovative developments.This paper will describe how an innovative approach resulted not only in significant savings in capital cost and site work hours but also delivered a truly optimised design for the thickener duty at Karara. Test work also played a crucial role and a comprehensive test work program on the ore samples showed the scale-up benefi ts of new technology in thickener designs. Working closely with the Karara team during the laboratory testing proved the old sizing theories for iron ore/magnetite processing have been superseded with the knowledge and results of the industry’s newest feedwell technology. Increased solids flux and rise rates in the testing process proved very successful, resulting in signifi cantly reduced thickener sizes and lower capital expense.Mechanical design considerations such as removal of underflow and pump access led to a preference for an above-ground thickener confi guration, and the economics of a completefabrication and installation package favoured steel construction for the thickener units.The ultimate choice of the bolted/fl anged tank methodology provides both economic and timely solutions for the site installation including reduced man power and quick and safe site-work. A benefits comparison between this design and other fabrication and installation procedures will also be analysed in the paper.

There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.
