The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The project specification called for the following works to be excavated: Access Shaft:122 m (out of 140 m total depth), 6.0 m diameter (selected by the contractor),Operation Shaft:125 m (out of 150 m total depth), 4.0 m diameter,Water Curtain Gallery:500 m (Later extended by additional 270 m), 4.0 m wide and 3.5 m high,Storage Caverns:910 m, 14.0 m wide, 11.0 m high,Top Heading:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Bench:14.0 m wide, 5.5 m high,Connection Galleries:250 m, 5.5 m wide, 5.5 m high.A total of 156 000 cubm of rock to be excavated.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

Gold-rich porphyry copper deposits areimportant sources of gold in the circum-Pacific region: 26 major deposits contain >7000 tonnes of gold. The deposits occur in a variety of subduction-related settings, and may be underlain by crust that is undergoing either extension or compression and that is either oceanic or cratonic in character. The deposits are associated intimately with composite porphyry stocks, which commonly were emplaced into coeval andesitic volcanic piles. The stocks range in composition from low-K calc-alkaline through high-K calc-alkaline to potassic alkaline. Much of the copper and gold were introduced as components of K-silicate alteration, which may undergo partial overprinting by intermediate argillic assemblages. Advanced argillic alteration is widespread in the shallow parts of the systems whereas sericitic alteration at deeper levels tends to be restricted. Gold distribution generally follows that of copper, which is present mainly as chalcopyrite with or without bornite. The gold is in the native state and occluded by cr in close proximity to the copper-iron and/or iron sulphides. The magmas and metals necessary for the generation of gold-rich porphyry deposits were derived mainly from subcrustal sources, with the subducted slab believed to play a pivotal role.

The reverse flotation of Itabirite iron ore is typically performed after a desliming step in which most of the sub-10 µm particles are removed. This is done to limit processing problems such as poor flotation recovery of SiO2 due to slime coatings and increased slurry viscosities, unmanageable froths and increased losses of hematite particles due to entrainment. However, the rejection of ultrafine particles contributes to large losses in iron recovery and may contribute to the instability of tailings dams. The aim of this study is to decouple the effects of ultrafine particles in the pulp and froth phases to better understand the processing capabilities of the fines fraction. The flotation test work was performed in a special-purpose continuously operated laboratory flotation cell that has a deep froth section to simulate plant-scale froth conditions. Five conditions of fines addition were investigated at three different froth heights and a solids concentration of 50 per cent. The behaviour of the pulp and the froth were decoupled using froth stability and froth recovery tests. This showed that, even though there is an exponential increase in froth stability at increasing fines quantities, the performance of the pulp has the overriding effect on the overall SiO2 recovery. Pulp zone, froth zone and overall SiO2 recoveries showed that overall recoveries increased by about 3.6 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. This meant a large increase of 20 per cent in SiO2 recovery when going from undeslimed to deslimed feed. This was driven largely by increases in the pulp zone recoveries, which were about 4 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content. The froth recoveries, on the other hand, decreased by between 0.75 per cent and 2.5 per cent for every 1 per cent decrease in fines content, depending on froth height. This paper explores further insights into iron ore flotation processing at different slimes concentrations.

The Kempfield deposit is located in the Hill End Trough, one of several intracratonic basins developed during Silurian–Devonian time, in the eastern province of the Lachlan Orogen, Eastern Australia.The deposit contains an oxide resource of 5.8 Mt @ 58 g/t Ag and a sulfide resource of 14.4 Mt @ 45 g/t Ag, 1.7 per cent Zn and 0.6 per cent Pb, classified and reported in compliance with the JORC Code. The deposit has been previously explored by a number of companies, including INCO, Shell, Jones Mining, Golden Cross Resources and recently Argent Minerals Ltd (Argent). Argent is currently completing a definitive feasibility study with a view to mining the deposit.The deposit is hosted at the boundary between the Molong High to the west, comprising Ordovician sediments and volcanic rocks and the Hill End Trough to the east, interpreted as a back-arc basin containing Silurian sediments and siliceous-feldspathic volcanic rocks. The boundary between these two strato tectonic units is an imbricate thrust fault zone known as the Copperhannia Thrust.The Kempfield deposit is hosted in felsic volcanic rocks known as the Kangaloolah Volcanics. These have been in-faulted and folded into the Middle Ordovician meta-sediments of the Coombing Formation of metasediments along the Copperhannia Thrust. The Kangaloolah Volcanics belong to the Late Silurian Mumbil Group, comprising submarine carbonate-shale facies interspersed with extensive felsic volcanic piles, which grade conformably upwards into turbiditic sandstone and siltstone sequences (interpreted to represent a deeper depositional environment). These turbiditic rocks are known as the Campbells Formation, comprising siltstone, sandstone and andesitic tuff. The rocks at Kempfield are metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies, reflected through the different type of schists.Silver, gold, lead, zinc mineralisation is hosted in barite-rich horizons, near the boundary to quartz-phyric tuffaceous rocks in submarine, immature, reworked felsic ash tuffs. Barite appears to be hosted in greatest concentrations by the coarser grained volcanoclastic sandstones and grits, whilst intercalated siltstones are volumetrically minor and tend to return low barite and silver. Mineralisation is hosted in stratiform and probably stratabound barite-rich horizons. A northeast-trending, steeply dipping, metamorphic cleavage (S1) occurs throughout the project area.

The current climate in the mining industry is allowing mining companies to further broaden their views and investigate technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations. Furthermore, underground mine environments will become more demanding for mining equipment and personnel as orebodies become deeper in weaker ground conditions with more extreme environmental conditions. Loading and hauling can represent significant components of the production cycle of an underground mine and automation of these activities can offer considerable benefits. Sandvik has accumulated a long history and experience in loading and hauling automation in underground mining. Since the late 1980s Sandvik has actively participated in several major research and development automation programs leading to the commencement of the development of an integrated system for semiautomated loading in 1999. Development work was later conducted to expand the capabilities of the system for automated hauling during 2001 and the AutoMine« system became commercially available. The first delivery of the AutoMine« system was completed in August 2004 in South America, where the system continues to operate in a full-scale production environment and is being expanded as the production area enlarges. Further systems have been delivered and are operational in North America, Africa and Europe. This paper focuses on the AutoMine« system deployed in Block 4 at De Beers Finsch Mine in South Africa. An overview of the mine and the process used to acquire the system and the key drivers which led to the selection of an automated solution are described. An overview of the initial system installation, subsequent expansions and future plans are presented. This is followed by a summary of the implementation and operational experiences associated with automated underground operations. The paper concludes by summarising the benefits that have been realised.

An inrush of water or mud into an underground mine, or sudden subsidence above mining voids represent low probability but high impact risks in underground mining. About two such incidents involving multiple fatalities or loss of production are reported each year worldwide. On average, Australia experiences one such incident every three to four years. This paper reports the development of a Standard that is intended to eliminate fatalities due to inrushes and subsidence.

A bulk analyser based on the gamma-ray resonance scattering process can be used to give a rapid and accurate measure of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel averaged over a large mass of sample, typi- cally 20 kg. It is shown that for a bulk sample containing about 3 wt.% Cu, crushing to -25 mm is the only sample preparation requited for analysis to within an error of about 0.06 wt.% Cu (errors quoted are one standard deviation). A comparison of bulk analyser and con- ventional assays on the same bulk samples can be used to estimate the sample preparation errors in the conventional methods. The squared deviations between bulk analyser and conventional assays are approximated by the sum of variances in sample preparation, conventional analysis, and bulk sample analy- sis. The sample preparation error was esti- mated as 0.26 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -2 mm before splitting, 0.08 wt.% Cu for samples crushed to -0.35 mm before splitting, and 0.04 wt.% Cu for the average of 15 grab samples from bulk samples which had been crushed to -2 mm. Bentonites and fuller's earths from seven localities in N.S.W. have been analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties and areas for future prospecting have been indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe rapid expansion of Australian industry in the postwar years has been accompanied by an ever increasing demand for fuller's earth and bentonite, but in New South Wales at least the demand has been met principally by imports. However, some local and generally inferior active earths have been won to blend with imported materials to reduce costs. The important discovery of the widespread distribution of bentonite clays in the Northern Coal Measures, made recently by Grim (Booker, 1956), has givenimpetus to the further search for material comparable in quality to the imported active earths.Bentonite may be defined as a highly plastic clay, generally possessing swelling properties, composed essentially of montmorillonite and derived from the alteration of volcanic ash. Fuller's earth refers to any clay which, with or without chemical treatment, is capable of decolourizing mineral or vegetable oils and is, therefore of economic value. Subsea massive sulfide deposits have particular mineralogical compositions and textural features differentiating them from onshore ore. When extracted from salty water and exposed to the air, massive sulfide samples strongly oxidise and soon become covered by thin layers of iron, copper and zinc-rich sulfates and oxides, as well as elemental sulfur. The textural properties vary according to the degree of maturity and the sample position within the hydrothermal deposit. Because of the variation of secondary mineralisation and porosity level, sea floor massive sulfides respond differently from terrestrial ore to processing methods. Froth flotation, commonly applied to separate all types of sulfides from the gangue minerals, is one possible treatment technique to process sea floor ore. Sulfide recovery rate is, in most cases, excellent (>90 per cent). However, separation of the various mineral phases is difficult to obtain even when applying known methods used for onshore ore. Moreover, the flotation behaviour decreases dramatically with time of conservation, even when the samples were stored in a confined environment. High pH range, which is a good way to depress pyrite and therefore to favour the flotation of copper and zinc sulfides, does not have the same effect on subsea ore. The combination of new tools with a more rigorous approach to understanding the interaction of mill liners with overall mill performance and economics, forms the basis of an integrated approach to liner management. Based on accurate liner wear measurements, some (limited) physical mill inspections and surveys, accurate calibration of the mill load and analysis of process data, a whole new approach to liner selection, relining intervals and mill control is proposed. Collection and analysis of this information in operating mills illustrates the mill performance improvement which can be attained through this careful measurement and modelling approach.A more holistic approach to liner management is proposed, including a broadening of the current work to cover the potential benefits of improved relining technologies and predictive liner wear modelling. Mine pit slopes in the Pacific Rim are a geotechnical challenge because of the complex geology in which they are developed. Mines are currently being fast-tracked to meet the increase in commodity prices, often resulting in some reduction in ground studies and short-cutting of design procedures. In addition, the resources boom means that skilled personnel are in relatively short supply. At a time when mine pits are getting bigger and deeper, and the engineering is getting more demanding, there is an increased demand on managers to effectively implement the work.   Experience both in New Zealand and the Philippines, display the complex range of geological environments in which pits are being excavated. Working in these conditions has shown that successful geotechnical design requires a strong geotechnical model based on sound geology. An appropriate level of investigation and analyses results in a certain level of understanding for the mine design. There is a point where additional expenditure (on investigation and analyses) is not warranted based on the expected minimal impact on decreasing the level of perceived risk on the project. For most projects in our experience the analytical methods and complexity of geotechnical assessment changes increases as the level of knowledge grows.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

The rare earth elements (REEs) assay and recovery in leaching processes is being determined using expensive analytical methods, ICP-AES, and ICP-MS. This paper presents a neural network model to predict the effects of operational variables on the lanthanum, cerium, yttrium, neodymium recovery in the leaching of apatite concentrate. The effects of leaching times: ten to 40 min, pulp densities: 30 to 50 per cent, acid concentrations: 20 to 60 per cent and agitation rates: 100 to 200 rpm were investigated and optimised on REEs recovery in laboratory at a leaching temperature of 60¦C. The obtained data, on the laboratory optimisation process were used for training and testing of a neural network. A feed-forward artificial neural network with 4-5-5-1 arrangement, was capable of estimating the REEs leaching recovery. Neural network predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The correlations of R = 1 in training stages, and R =  0.971, 0.952, 0.985 and 0.98 in testing stages were results for Ce, Nd, La and Y recovery predictions respectively and that theses values are considerably acceptable. It was shown that the proposed neural network model accurately reproduces all the effects of operation variables, and can be used in the simulation of a REEs leaching plant.

Data management is a significant, but perhaps unrecognised, consideration for any organisation embarking on a geometallurgy program. While resource geologists are accustomed to dealing with thousands or millions of samples and their associated assays, metallurgists and mineralogists have traditionally carried out only a few expensive and complicated tests and consequently tend to manage the resultant data in spreadsheets. The emerging discipline of geometallurgy arrives with significant challenges as a result of the sheer volume of data generated. As an example, the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated more than:60 000 physical subsamples analysed for up to 30 analytes; 25 000 spreadsheet-based laboratory test results; 30 000 sized fractions analysed via QXRD, MLA and/or QEMSCAN;multiple external providers of data, and more than seven terabytes of data. Considerations for any geometallurgy data management system include storage space, data integrity, accessibility, traceability (sample provenance), maintenance and ease of use, integration with data providers and the ability to modify the system to adapt to changing requirements. Further, aspects of a geometallurgy program, such as conducting a range of tests on one sample, producing subsamples such as concentrates and tailings, compositing and routine QA/QC may not be well handled by existing software and providers geared to standard geochemistry, mineralogy or metallurgical test programs. The development of a geometallurgy database using existing software (AcQuire), and the associated file management system will be described for a large geometallurgy program at Olympic Dam. As with many aspects of geometallurgy there is no approach that meets the needs of every site or program. Recognition of data management as an issue, a structured approach in the program planning phase and commitment to executing the strategy will increase the chances of successfully mining the geometallurgical data.

Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers, and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both cleanup labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and en- dangering personnel and conveyor components, including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply an operation's hidden costs-the dollars lost because of missed production, of increased downtime, of the expense for the replacement of prematurely worn or damaged equipment. In this paper, the author will examine the importance of belt conveyors to mines and process plants He will trace the state-of-the-art in systems for cleaning belts, and controlling the release of fugitive material from conveyor transfer points, by exploring the roots of the problems, and demonstrating solutions that have been proven to be effective. Included in these systems to improve material handling are transfer point stabilization and sealing systems, dual belt cleaning systems, and belt training idlers.

To increase the efficiency and improve the quality of diamond drilling at Olympic Dam, mine geologists have adapted and modified common practices in order to overcome the challenges imposed by such a unique environment. Mine geologists have to take into account both the complex geology during the diamond drill hole design phase, as well as incorporating diamond drilling into the larger-scale scheduling process already employed at Olympic Dam. This study seeks to explore how such modifications have evolved over time.The geology of Olympic Dam influences the design process of diamond drill holes, particularly due to the variation of lithology and alteration, as well as the presence of magnetite and major structures within the orebody. Exclusion zones are used to manage interactions with existing and planned mining activities, and their size is dependent upon the geology of the area. Specific deviation checks are used to monitor the deviation of diamond drill holes with respect to these?zones.The highly interactive environment of Olympic Dam requires unique planning for diamond drilling, resulting in the production and implementation of both long- and short-term schedules. Long-term schedules are targeted at determining drilling locations and ensuring drilling is completed prior to stope planning, while short-term schedules aid in enabling access to ensure timely set-up of drill sites. Estimated drilling rates, determined by expected lithologies and historical data, feed into the short-term schedule to assist in managing the operation and minimising the downtime of diamond drill rigs. A mine geologist is appointed as a diamond drill coordinator to organise and manage diamond drilling at a scheduling and operational level, streamlining the entire process.Analysis of historical data shows a strong correlation between implementation of the aforementioned practices and improved drilling rates. This study shows the importance of adapting universal tasks to particular environments and circumstances. Mine geologists at Olympic Dam continue to acquire knowledge to further improve the modified drilling practices as operational requirements, production pressures and economic factors change.CITATION:Taylor, J and Dubowik, A, 2014. This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here. The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant.
