Bulk explosive technology for underground mining has not seen any significant technological advances since the widespread transition from ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) to ammonium nitrate emulsions (ANE) commencing in the 1980s. The in-hole energy profile that conventional ANE systems deliver is limited by the physics of chemical gassing and simple control systems. This compromises the range, precision, and accuracy of energy delivery into the blasthole, and in some cases limits the length of charge that can be delivered. Orica’s 4D™ bulk system removes many of these constraints, enabling better blasting performance across all underground mining methods. This paper reviews work completed at three mining operations across Australia, the United States, and Chile with a focus on how this system can improve mining operations and deliver sustained commercial and productivity benefits into the future. These benefits include improved ore recovery, reduced dilution from waste rock, and reduced overall explosives consumption. This paper also reviews how this new technology can be applied for planning future mining operations.

Water rights and availability are extremely contentious issues in many mining regions around the world, in some instances leading to violent confrontation. This situation has the potential to only get worse because competition for 'scarce' water resources will increase with population growth. In this environment the dilemma facing the mining industry is how to generate confidence in developing a responsible, sustainable and transparent water management strategy that is recognised as such by all stakeholders. Whilst the water needs of the mining industry are minor compared to those of agriculture, an operating mine requires a relatively large quantity of water on a daily basis to carry out operations. Another contentious aspects of new mine development is the debate between all stakeholders on the amount and quality of water that a mine is able to discharge into the environment should this be required. There are a multitude of water resources available to the mining industry for operational needs however much of this water is saline and over the last two decades there has been a continual decline in water quality (ie salinity has increased). In today's world there are enormous internal and external pressures to reduce water consumption at a mine and/or alternatively use water not considered a resource by the local community (ie sewage, saline or salt water, desalinated water). Strategies to meet these objectives can be achieved by implementing good water management practices, by recycling process water, reducing water losses by evaporation and seepage (ie by increasing and improving dewatering practices) and employing new technologies such as dry stacking and dry processing. Recycled water, acid mine drainage water and water collected in the mining area have the potential to impact mineral processing performance, unless they are treated, because of the build up of mineral salts and decomposed chemical products in these types of waters. Besides this the regulatory requirements of any water discharged from a mine site (quantity and quality) have also become more stringent. For these reasons there is now some form of water treatment practiced at most mining operations around the world. This paper provides an overview of water stewardship undertaken in the mining industry over the last two decades and provides examples of water treatment practices that have recently been installed at mining operations that may be of interest to the reader.

It is the role of the exploration geologist to create wealth through the discovery, delineation and characterisation of economic mineralisation. This requires a critical depth of geological understanding.Unfortunately, the resource industry is well known for its cyclic nature. Many of the current generation of workers have only ever experienced the boom of the ‘super-cycle’ and are only just discovering the negative side to the business. For the case of the geologist and especially the exploration geologist, the magnitude of peaks and troughs are usually amplified and may become destructive to all parties. During the uptime a healthy stream of exploration good news becomes the staple diet of company releases, in particular those of junior companies attempting to bolster the share price. The geological knowledge and experience gained thus forms a significant and integral part of the value and therefore, future of a company. On the downturn it is often viewed that geologists are a luxury, an optional extra and a burden on the bottom line with companies entering a period of memory loss and myopia.Retention of geological knowledge however remains critical as projects, companies and cycles mature. Beyond exploration per se, this knowledge becomes both fundamental in de-risking and commercialising an asset (through development or divestment) and in positioning the company for cyclic or counter-cyclic opportunities.The growth and retention of this knowledge base is difficult to quantify in terms of direct value but becomes one of a successful resource companies greatest assets. At worst, its loss can lead to millions of investors’ funds wasted on missed opportunities, drilling, or poorly designed plant and mine.But the rocks are around for the longer haul and pay little notice to the vagaries of the scurrying of Man.This paper reflects on some of the authors own observations through 25 years of iron ore exploration, in why it is critical to always rigorously question the prevailing geological (mis)understanding and the technical and commercial benefits which that may bring, and looks forward to the future.CITATION:Kepert, D, 2015. Underpinning the mining process is a continuum of prediction, specifically of tonnes, grade and recovery from exploration to grade control, through short-term mine design, to mining and processing. The interdependence of one activity on the other is so strong that it can be difficult to partition the activities and determine where there are issues, if any. Reconciliation is the process that compares the predictions of the various estimates to the actual product produced at the end of the production chain. Quite often, an attempt to understand the variances from one measuring point to the other creates a ‘wicked problem’.This study outlines the benefits of incorporating the principles of ‘systems thinking’ into the mining reconciliation process, by constructing a framework within which reconciliation is effectively managed. The philosophical base for any variances between successive links in the reconciliation chain cannot be attributed purely to the statistical variance between the predicted and the actual grades achieved, but should include the interrelationships between the technical and managerial professionals involved. Systems thinking, as an interdisciplinary approach, draws its ideas and concepts from a variety of disciplines, and in so doing can exploit their different strengths.The study described in this paper offers methodologies to analyse the task, in advance of developing a technical solution. Two systems thinking methodologies, Grounded Theory (GT) and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) were employed. These methodologies, are geared towards dealing with relationships and interactions between individual parts and the whole. The GT coding in the study specified that the key activity that would drive the reconciliation process is through an effective reconciliation meeting, and the competencies of a ‘reconciliation team member’ This team member should be a good communicator and enjoy challenges, be open-minded and transparent, and have a broad perspective of the mining process and relationships across the different activities.CITATION:Adofo, R, 2017. The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. Axial flow fans are commonly used as auxiliary fans in underground mines to supply air to development headings. As diesel dilution requirements increase the fans used in conjunction with ventilation bags are becoming larger in diameter to move greater quantities of air over greater development distances. It is not uncommon for mining operations to sometimes use a number of these larger auxiliary fans with high airflow capacity in parallel as primary fans for the operations. These primary fan stations are often considered temporary installations and the fan selection and fan station design is rarely optimised. These temporary installations may become permanent resulting in an inefficient or unreliable primary ventilation system. A recent study looked at the likely causes of multiple primary fan failures at one operation with axial fans installed as primary units where the fan selection and fan station aerodynamic design was far from optimal. This paper explores some of the typical mechanisms of failure such as high pressure stall, unbalanced airflow, and fan tip speed as well as fabrication material. The paper proposes a number of good practise principles that should be considered during the design of a fan station. A second topic covered is the advantages and disadvantages of using different types of fans such as axial, mixed flow and centrifugal units. Here the concept of fan specific speed and its relevance to fan selection is discussed. It has been thought in the past that New Zealand had ample coal reserves, able to provide fossil fuel supplies well into the future. Such is not the case and every effort must be made to achieve the highest possible extraction rate in all new coal mining ventures. While the relative cost and availability of completion or fuels has been largely responsible for the slow growth of coal production in the past, a world shortage of fuels has given coal a new importance and required better utilisation of coal reserves. New mining ventures in thick-seam coal deposits cannot be planned and designed without geotechnical investigations designed to provide information required by the mining engineer and analyst. Finite element analysis of mine workings may provide essential information on the optimisation of mining techniques and the design of underground support and roadway shapes.

The JK Drop Weight test was developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in the early 1990s as a means of characterising ore for the purposes of AG/SAG mill and crusher modelling. It has since been used extensively worldwide in the minerals industry as a key ore characterisation test which produces parameters which are used in comminution circuit design and optimisation. The test generates three parameters which are used in the AG/SAG mill model of the JKSimMet software. The resistance of the ore to high energy (impact) breakage is quantified with the A and b parameters. The oreÆs resistance to low energy (abrasion) breakage is measured using the ta parameter. The accuracy and precision of the results of the JK drop weight test are of great importance given that the parameters are key inputs in the design of such capital intensive items as SAG mills. Plant optimisation exercises also rely on the accuracy of the parameters to assist with improving the performance of an existing circuit. A thorough analysis of the accuracy and precision of the parameters generated by the JK drop weight test has now been undertaken by JKTech Pty Ltd (JKTech). An experimental program was designed using statistical methods to plan a hierarchical set of 24 drop weight tests on homogeneous material. Each stage of the test was identified and incorporated into the experimental design so that the contribution to the overall error of each stage could be quantified, including the effect of operator. The data were analysed by nested analysis of variance. An overall analysis of the A, b and ta parameters generated from the test program has now quantified the variance of these parameters more thoroughly than ever before. Using the results for the impact parameters, an analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of these variances on final SAG mill comminution circuit design. The results will also be used to refine the comparative testing procedures currently in use by licensees worldwide.

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low-angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. The zone is commonly believed to be similar to the actively mined Macraes deposit. The Rise and Shine Shear Zone occurs in the immediate footwall of the Thomsons Gorge Fault, a regional scale Cretaceous normal fault that juxtaposes chlorite zone schist against biotite zone schist. Most mineralised rocks are deformed and record a progression from early stages of semiductile deformation to more brittle cataclasis. Folds in mineralised rocks trend northwards. The mineralised schist is hydrothermally altered with variable silicification, sericitisation, chloritisation, replacement of titanite by rutile and carbonate alteration. Gold is associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite and occurs in both ductile and brittle microstructures. Sheared and mineralised schist is cut by north-striking fault zones which host mineralised quartz veins. Veins in the shear zone contain hydrothermal albite. Trace element analyses show enrichment in As, U, Th and rare earth elements. Many of the above features are similar to Macraes deposit, but there are important differences. In particular, the Macraes deposit is hosted in lower grade rocks and truncated beneath by a normal fault, Macraes has no U or Th enrichment, Macraes veins have no albite and folds at Macraes trend NW-W. Rise and Shine mineralised rocks have no Cr enrichment and no hydrothermal graphite.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. A long-term production schedule for the LabMag iron ore deposit in northern Quebec, Canada is derived using stochastic integer programming. The optimisation formulation maximises the schedule’s net present value while simultaneously managing the risk of deviations in production tonnages and qualities by considering stochastic simulations of the orebody instead of a single deterministic model. The formulation also smooths and minimises haul truck requirements and ensures that as mining progresses, space is created within the mined out pit for the return of waste material.CITATION:Spleit, M, 2014. Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. This paper outlines the evolution of managing high consequence risk scenarios in BHP Coal, with particular focus on managing the stability of an endwall that is adjacent to a public infrastructure corridor running through a Central Queensland coalmine. BHP Coal developed a Geotechnical Consequence Register after industry failures identified shortcomings in traditional risk assessment practices. Traditional risk assessments consider the consequence and likelihood of a geotechnical event occurring under normal operational conditions. As such, the risk rating for a high consequence, low likelihood failure may fall within the acceptable range, even where a lack of meaningful geological data exists due to the area being off lease or outside of mining reserves. The Geotechnical Consequence Register lists all geotechnical failure scenarios of high consequence, identifies if current controls are adequate, and highlights if specific Geotechnical Management Plans are required. This case study reviews a failure scenario that was identified through the geotechnical consequence register. The scenario had previously been considered low likelihood and subsequently driving a low risk; however, the likelihood ranking was impacted by a lack of geological data outside of the mining lease and predominately informed by an acceptable historical slope behaviour. Additional exploration identified previously unmapped faulting which increased the risk rating. The requirement to develop a specific management plan resulted in an increase in the required factor of safety, design changes, the implementation of additional monitoring and a corresponding monitoring Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP). In the case study area, the initiation of a geotechnical instability was identified early through the increased monitoring program. The instability was successfully managed and any impact to the infrastructure corridor off lease was prevented. BHP Coal has used the Geotechnical Consequence Register for several years to identify and assess high consequence geotechnical failure scenarios. In some areas this has justified additional exploration, more stringent design acceptance criteria and an increased level of geotechnical monitoring. The process has been successful in ensuring that geotechnical risk is controlled in areas that often receive less attention than active production areas.

Collaboration between CSIRO Minerals and SunSalt Pty Ltd, a salt producing company located in rural Victoria, has resulted in a commercial process to recover magnesium sulfate (commonly called Epsom salt) from the saline waters of the Murray Basin. The feed for this process is bittern; the liquor remaining after halite (common salt) has been harvested from the saline water by evaporation.SunSalt produces salt and bitterns from three locations, namely Hattah (Victoria), Mourquong (NSW) and Wakool (NSW). The small size and considerable distances between these operations makes it uneconomic to build a stationary processing plant to extract value-added products, in particular Epsom salt, from the bitterns of the three operations. This fact led SunSalt to build a containerised mobile plant that could be moved to each site to process the bitterns at the end of the salt harvesting period.Epsom salt is extracted from the bittern by further evaporation, refrigeration and recrystallisation. In this process the bittern is diluted with five per cent volume of fresh water to minimise precipitation of residual halite in the bittern. Cooling the diluted bittern to between -5 and -10¦C precipitates up to 70 per cent of the magnesium sulfate, which is recovered as 85 to 96 per cent purity Epsom salt by filtration. This product is marketed as an industrial grade Epsom salt. Higher purity (up to 99.9 per cent) Epsom salt (USP or BP grade refined product) is made from the industrial grade product (raw Epsom salt) by recrystallisation.The containerised mobile plant was commissioned in December 2002. The raw Epsom salt generated in the mobile plant is refined to a higher purity Epsom salt in a separate plant located in Mildura. The Mildura plant was commissioned in December 2003.The CSIRO-SunSalt collaboration has demonstrated that the saline waters can be processed into a useful resource, and in addition could create jobs and a new skill base in regional Australia. The production of Epsom salt locally in Australia, which is worth currently about $A600 per tonne, removes the need to import over 3000 tpa from overseas with a net positive impact of $A2 million on the balance of trade.

Tailings pond safety monitoring is vital for preventing dam failures and ensuring environmental safety. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can enhance tailings pond monitoring with flexible operational cycles and the ability to collect remote sensing data from inaccessible areas. While many mining operations have adopted UAVs for tailings pond management, their full potential in data acquisition and subsequent analytical processing remains largely untapped. This paper explores various case studies where UAVs have been utilised for monitoring key aspects of tailings ponds such as beach line indicators, dam displacement and erosion, slurry discharge processes, and tailings pond capacity. We also present examples where data derived from UAVs have been instrumental in slope stability analysis, seepage modelling, Tailings Dam Breach Analysis (TDBA), and risk prediction. Coromandel Peninsula gold mineralisation has an epithermal style which involves extensive alteration of host rocks and addition of pyrite over large volumes of rock. These altered rocks therefore have high potential for generating acid rock drainage. Natural acid groundwater discharges occur in altered rocks, but not in propylitically altered rock. There is little calcite available in mineralised rocks to neutralise this acid. In contrast, the mesothermal veins of the Otago Schist cause little alteration of the host rock, and that alteration has similar mineralogy to the host rock. Calcite is a common mineral in host and mineralised zones, and sulphides are generally subordinate. Hence acidification of Otago rocks is unlikely. This lack of acidification in Otago facilitates arsenic mobility in solution, up to hundreds of ppm. Arsenic is insoluble under acidic conditions in the Coromandel. Base metals are soluble under acidic conditions of the Coromandel, but they are immobilised by adsorption on to the widespread clay minerals where the solutions are neutralised. Base metals are generally immobile in Otago, but when they are mobilised, adsorption is less effectiveas an attenuation mechanism because clay minerals are rare.
