Processing of lead-zinc and copper ores by Mount Isa Mines Limited produces large quantit- ies of concentrator tailings waste which is pumped as a slurry to special dams where the solids are allowed to settle and dry out. These areas are unattractive and show no signs of encroachment by plant life even though the surfaces of some dams have remained undisturbed for more than a decade. During 1970 Mount Isa Mines Limited commenced a long term research program in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, University of Queensland to deter- mine possible methods of establishing a plant cover on this material. Research has defined the major factors limiting plant growth in the tailings medium. Modification of the edaphic conditions through fertilizer inputs, particularly of phosphorus and nitrogen, and alteration of "soil" physical properties by incorporation of mulching mater- ials, provided conditions which allowed plant growth. The outstanding "soil" amendment treatment was incorporation of fly ash, a waste product of the company's coal fired power stations. A range of crop and pasture species have been selected which have grown well with adequate irrigation under the amended conditions in the field. Further research is assessing a range of native plant species and agronomic techniques to provide a stable plant cover on the tailings dams.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

Ban Houayxai is a gold-silver mine operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited in Laos since 2012. The first two years of operation processed predominately soft oxidised ore but subsequent years were expected to process more fresh hard ore. Fragmentation of the fresh primary ores was also expected to be much coarser than for the soft oxide ores. This coarser and harder ore is expected to significantly reduce mill throughput and mining productivity. The Ban Houayxai management realised the potential downside risk when processing fresh harder ores and implemented a blast optimisation project to deliver finer fresh ore to the mill without unduly increasing blast induced dilution and damage.JKTech and the Ban Houayxai drill and blast team began a joint blast optimisation project in April 2013 to achieve finer fragmentation from fresh ores. This was achieved by modifying the bench geometry, blast patterns and applying exceptionally high levels of quality control during implementation. Blast induced ore loss and dilution was controlled by adjusting the ore blocks for blast movement. Finer fragmentation from these modified designs improved mill throughput for the hard fresh ore by 46 per cent above design on average. The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

In preparing a paper such as this it was thought that the Newstan Colliery Company Ltd., being comparatively new, would need some introduction to mining people in general.The Newstan Company was formed by the Joint Coal Board in December, 1948 during a period of acute coal shortages. The Company took over the holdings of what were known as the Olstan and Northumberland Collieries, situated at Fassifern, alongside Lake Macquarie and adjacent to the Great Northern Railway, within easy rail access of Sydney and Newcastle, as shown on the locality plan (Fig. 1).The Company was developed in order to produce steaming coal for the power house trade and has continued its activities in the steaming coal trade since its inception. The Olstan and Northumberland collieries were together producing some 300 tons per day when the Company was formed, and it was from this foundation that the colliery was built. The planned development of the Company has been along the lines of producing coal by modern, highly mechanised methods, together with the preparation of theproduct for the consumer, to the highest degree possible consistent with up to date methods.In the comparatively short time of 5t years the mine has developed from a small hand-won coal unit to a high capacity modern mine, one of Australia's largest producers, with an output capacity as high as 3,000 tons per shift.

There is still a huge challenge in efficiently recovering the arsenides minerals that are largely concentrated in the Platreef Bushveld Complex which constitutes about 21 per cent of the platinum group minerals (PGMs). Therefore new collectors are required to improve the recovery separation of hard to float minerals, in particular sperrylite. The triazine modifications are promising reagents for mineral flotation and have not been given much attention in minerals processing. The adsorption of sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT), sodium 2,6- ditrithiocarbonate-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTTCBAT) and sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) on sperrylite (100) surface were performed to identify a well performing collector molecule. We observed that the triazine collectors preferred to bridge on surface As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SDTTCBAT > SDTBAT > SNBX, indicating that the SDTTCBAT had strong exothermic adsorption on sperrylite and pyrite. These results showed that the ditrithiocarbamate had a great influence in the adsorption strength on the sperrylite surface. Importantly it was found that the triazine collector had stronger adsorption than the xanthate, which portrayed a promising replacement of xanthate collector. These results paved a way for design of novel collector for sperrylite and other chalcogenide minerals to improve their recovery.

LKAB operates two underground iron ore mines located in the northern part of Sweden, both using sublevel caving (SLC) as the mining method. Knowledge of the mechanisms of gravity flow is important since it affects both ore recovery and waste dilution. This paper describes results from a large-scale field test carried out at the Kiruna mine with a focus on gravity flow. It is part of Work Package 2 in the I2Mine project financed by the EU. A total of ten rings were blasted. Smart Markers based on radio frequency identification technology were used to monitor the gravity flow. An accurate delineation of the isolated extraction zone requires reliable detection of all recovered Smart Markers and precise knowledge of the 3D position of the markers within the burden. It was therefore necessary to carry out borehole deviation measurements (collar, alignment and trajectory). The blast performance was monitored by high-speed filming, near-field vibration monitoring and velocity of detonation measurements. Three-dimensional stereo images were taken from the drawpoint and the loaded bucket after each mucking cycle. Based upon that, fragmentation was assessed both in 2D and 3D. Furthermore, volumetric differences were determined at the drawpoint, which reflects the mobility of loaded material. For draw control, the Fe content is estimated by measuring weight and assuming a full bucket. The measured volume of rock in each bucket further improves this estimate. Possible flow disturbances occurring at the drawpoint were revealed by video recording. Two-dimensional laser scanning was carried out during mucking to track the position of the bucket and estimate the position and slope of the muck pile.The results from this test clearly show that the gravity flow in the large-scale sublevel cave in Kiruna mine is often of disturbed character. Standard draw occurred only in three rings and shallow draw in the remaining seven rings. In five cases, shallow draw developed towards standard draw, but occurred at rather late stages during extraction (70–125 per cent). The maximum width of the draw varied between 10 m and 13 m except for one ring (6 m). The draw reaches the cave rather early (5–25 per cent extraction) in shallow draw situations and much later (about 50 per cent) during standard draw. Waste originates from above in most cases, while more significant portions often occur at about 20–45 per cent extraction.All the results from this extensive field test are not yet fully analysed, and further field tests are planned. Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. I would like to expand on these needs.

In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. However, once these X-rays are added to the mineral reference list, effective segmentation can be achieved and a proper analysis obtained.CITATION:Grant, D C, Goudie, D J, Voisey, C, Shaffer, M and Sylvester, P, 2017. In this era of rising focus on the social and environmental costs and benefits of mining operations, the valuation methodologies used to assess such impacts become increasingly important. Within an industry dominated by an engineering culture that places emphasis on net present value (NPV) calculations using high discount rates, difficulties often arise when attempting to justify projects with longer-term, harder to quantify benefits. This is particularly so when these benefits fall in the social and environmental domains and involve other stakeholders. In this paper, we summarise the results of a recent literature review on this subject, which focused on the valuation of æBeyond ComplianceÆ initiatives in the mining sector. We discuss a range of approaches including the quantification of hidden internal costs, financial methods of incorporating risk into calculations, the integration of quantitative and qualitative information, and also the valuation of æexternalitiesÆ or costs and benefits borne by others. We then use a series of examples relating to the management of water in the minerals industry to illustrate how some of these approaches could be applied. There are high-level commitments from both individual companies and groups such as the ICMM to incorporate sustainable development criteria into decision-making processes within the industry. We conclude the paper by arguing that, to meet these commitments, there is a need for the industry to adopt a broader range of valuation methodologies than appears to be the case at present.

The precise measurement of NO2 was historically difficult in road tunnels, hence criteria and design analysis was based on converting from NOx concentrations via a set NO2:NOx ratio. The reliable direct measurement of NO2 is now possible, however design analysis is still dominated by emissions tables and formulas specified in terms of NOx. For converting from NOx to NO2 in a road tunnel environment in Australia, the ratio has typically been assumed to be ten?per?cent. This has generally been based on the recommendation in PIARC (2000) and on the ‘average’ value cited in PIARC (1995).Determining this ratio is important as changes in engine technology and in-tunnel pollution criteria along with improvements in CO and particulate emissions control, may mean that NO2 will become the driving factor for future ventilation requirements. Correct selection of this ratio can directly impact the ventilation capacity and system design.Recent research has indicated that choosing a constant ratio of ten?per?cent for all tunnels may not be appropriate. The in-tunnel ratio has been estimated to be as much as 20?per?cent to 30?per?cent and depends on the location in the tunnel, the type of ventilation system and the traffic/fleet characteristics. This paper discusses the effect of some of these parameters on the NO2:NOx ratio in road tunnels.The findings indicate that the ten?per?cent upper limit on the NO2:NOx ratio in PIARC (2000) may be a conservative value for design purposes for longitudinally ventilated road tunnels of typical length in Australia. A value of seven?per?cent to eight?per?cent may be more appropriate in some circumstances. However, the value chosen will depend on the specific tunnel in question and the confidence in traffic conditions expected. Mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand has had almost five years of new legislation. The requirement for different consents is a challenging, time consuming, expensive exercise but in most cases the new procedure is working, although the matter of obtaining access to land is still a major issue. Priority is critical. After lodgment of an application for a minerals permit there are many other matters to address such as identifying land owners, occupiers and administrators, preparation of access applications, consultation and preparation of various resource consent applications.

Blasts should be designed so as to maximise the percentage of charges which shoot to a free face (Le, to a pronounced rock/air interface).Free faces should be rough, parallel and reasonably near to blastholes and, very importantly, concavely·biplanar relative to the charges (see Fig. 6b). The presence of biplanar free faces requires that each charge fragments and detaches its quota of the burden rock before the detonation of:1. later-firing adjacent charges in single-row blasts, and2. dependent charges in multi-row blasts.In multi-row blasts, biplanar faces are best achieved:1. by drilling blastholes on equilateral triangular grids,2. by selecting a VI, V2 or V3 initiation sequence, and3. by using down-the-hole delays.Biplanar faces start to be created only when the conventional value of effective blasthole spacing/effective burden distance (Se/Be) increases beyond about 2.4. Values of Se/Be less than about 2.4 result in planar free faces. Where biplanar faces are created, conventional values of Se/Be are invalid and appreciably greater than real values of Se/Be.

The Karara iron ore project is a magnetite operation consist of open pit mining and concentrator to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The concentrator has adopted three stages of comminution, ie fine crushing in the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), primary ball milling and fine grinding in the TowerMill plus magnetic separation in between these comminution devices. Since 2014, the concentrator has increased the plant feed rate by 18 per cent. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 13 per cent to a Bond work index value of 15 kWh/t that led to a coarser flotation feed. Karara Mine has decided to shift the comminution workload from the primary ball mill to the TowerMill circuit by bypassing the 100 µm fine screen in between the ball mill and TowerMill circuits. This action has increased the circuit feed particle size distribution with a top size close to 1 mm. The specific energy consumption of the TowerMill circuit was approximately 3.4 kWh/t, and the circuit product sizes (P80) were ranged between 38 and 45 µm. A joint process improvement exercise was carried out to reduce the circuit product size closer to the magnetite liberation size, ie 35 µm. Among the activities were circuit audit, recommendation for improvement, modelling and simulation, multicomponent analysis, implementation of recommendations and quantification of the improvement. One of the key findings was the density effect of multicomponent minerals in the hydrocyclone. The analysis revealed that the low density coarser gangue minerals were bypassed to the hydrocyclone overflow stream that has resulted in a coarser particle size distribution. Meanwhile, more than 20 per cent of fine (-35 µm) high-density magnetite particles were recycled back to the mill through the hydrocyclone underflow stream and increased the circulating load. Based on these outcomes, several recommendations such as conversion to bottom feed configuration, use of smaller grinding media, high operating hydrocyclone pressure and additional grinding power to the TowerMill circuit were made to improve the overall circuit performances. Karara Mine has prioritised to implement those recommendations that have a minimal financial implication. Full-scale plant trials with bottom feed configuration and 17 mm grinding media were conducted to evaluate its performances. These trials have indicated that the grinding efficiency in the TowerMill was enhanced by 10 – 30 per cent. In May 2017, all the five TowerMills were converted to the bottom feed configuration. Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are typically composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of sterile resources in particular BIF material which makes up greater than 65 per cent of current reserves. BIF, like most resources, is non-renewable and the deposition of BIF is thought to have come about by the reaction of Fe2+ ions in the ocean water with dissolved oxygen billions of years ago. BIF ore derived from the Limpopo region in South Africa (SA) located in the Penge Iron Formation is according to Cairncross, Kramers and Villa (2018) equivalent to that contained within the Asbestos Hills Iron Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape, SA. Considering that these are one of the largest iron ore deposits in SA, the case study involved mineralogical characterisation followed by beneficiation of BIF from these two regions to ascertain the comparability. Coarse and fines gravity separation comprising of Heavy Liquid Separation/Dense Media Separation on the +1.18 mm size fraction and shaking table on the -1.18 mm size fraction was conducted to ascertain whether an on-grade product or blended feedstock could be produced. The Limpopo mixed and Northern Cape conglomerate BIF samples achieved similar overall responses due to the conglomerate sample containing 15.3 per cent additional -1.18 mm fines. A combined coarse and fines product grading at 60 per cent Fe could be achieved at a yield and recovery of 43.9– 53.0 per cent and 62.2–63.8 per cent respectively. Increasing the grade to 63 per cent Fe reduces the overall recovery by 13.3 per cent. At the higher target grade, the contaminant specifications could be achieved for both samples. The Northern Cape laminated BIF sample is the most promising of the three samples studied. At the two iron target grades overall yields and iron recoveries of 72.9–65.4 per cent and 85.2– 80.2 per cent was achieved. In both instances the silica grade exceeded the product specification, however if the silica content is the driver the target iron grade should increase to 63.32 per cent. This will result in a minimal decrease in recovery of 0.4 per cent. The promising results of this study indicate that coarse beneficiation of BIF material is possible. These ore types could be blended with superior grade products to improve overall yields and recoveries or sold directly at a 63 per cent Fe product grade whilst sacrificing 0.4–13.3 per cent recovery.

Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.

In Australia, the term "heavy mineral deposits" is used to denote sands which contain variable but economic quantities of the minerals rutile, ilmenite and zircon, often with minor amounts of monazite and xenotime as co-products. Australia has been a significant producer of rutile, ilmenite and zircon from such sands for fifty years and has long been the leading producer of rutile and zircon. The industry had its beginnings with the mining of present day beaches in northern NSW in 1934. Early work was small scale and in some cases involved hand winning of naturally concen- trated mineral for direct export. During World War II and immediately after the industry became increasingly mechanised and by the 1970s on the east coast operated between Newcastle, NSW north to Fraser Island in Queensland. Deposits worked included present day beaches, fossil strand lines up to 5 km or more inland from the present coast and aeolian concentrations. In the mid 1950s, operations commenced on the west coast of WA, south of Perth. Western Australian mineral sands tend to be rich in ilmenite as compared to the east coast. However the WA ilmenites are lower in chrome oxide and make a better syn- thetic rutile feedstock.
