The mines of the future can be envisioned as complex, large-scale technological systems being operated remotely from few centrally located (major cities) operating centres and skeletal crew stationed at the site. These systems will require remotely located human operators to constantly adapt to new and unforeseen system and environmental demands. In addition, the remote operators will need to match system properties to the changing demands and operational conditions, ie must be able to handle the ‘non-design’ emergencies, because the system designers would not have been able to foresee all possible scenarios of failures and provide automatic safety devices for every contingency. Therefore, it is highly important that the operators’ job, which involves problem solving and decision making at the workstation level, is facilitated by the proper interface designs. This paper argues that decision support systems and thus human-system interfaces for the mines of the future should be developed based on the principles of human-system integration that take into account human information processing and cognitive abilities. The information presented to the operator must support the operator in taking appropriate action through a human-system interface designed according to scientific principles of User Centred Design. A case study is presented where an iterative design process was used by CSIRO researchers as an evaluation method involving users (control room operators) at several stages of the user interface design in order to correct any design inadequacies as they emerged. This process allowed the designers to identify any usability issues before the user interface was fully implemented, which subsequently enabled the control room operators to easily adapt to the new interface and carry out all designated tasks in a timely and effective manner.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

The discovery of the Cuffley Lode at Mandalay Resources Costerfield Operations provided an opportunity to extend mine life via mining the offset depth extension of the previously worked Alison Mine. Access from the existing Augusta Mine placed the initial Cuffley underground workings at approximately 250 metres depth from surface. As the new orebody transitioned towards production, a secondary means of egress needed to be established. The depth of the initial capital development presented a challenge in establishing a secondary means of egress that could be confidently relied on. The availability of land to locate a surface shaft collar further reduced available options and geotechnical drilling further limited suitable shaft locations. Time limiting factors such as permitting and having a secondary means of egress in as soon as possible, further highlighted that an innovative secondary means of egress was needed. A consideration of using an emergency gig lowered by a suitable sized crane supplied by an external crane contractor was investigated and found to be a suitable outcome. This Emergency Gig was deployed via the Cuffley Return Air Raise. When trialled, the emergency gig was found to provide a reliable, repeatable extraction method with an acceptable level of risk. Issues discovered during such trials further improved the process to a point where this extraction method became the adopted secondary means of egress for additional lodes that existed at depth. When assessing possible methods of secondary means of egress, the use of a third-party crane and custom designed and fabricated emergency gig should not be discounted. Where a crane can be sourced within an acceptable timeframe, the emergency gig extraction method provides a reliable safe and cost-effective means of secondary means of egress, especially when multiple shafts are to be developed. Local laws may negate the ability to employ such a system, although it is believed with good communication and well-constructed risk assessments, this system can be safely deployed.

Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. "Current closure objectives and criteria are often difficult to achieve and are not delivering value for money outcomes at closure. Current mine closure processes tend to focus on rehabilitation and revegetation of landform structures to as close to premining condition as possible, rather than focusing on the functions of those structures and values they provided. Because mining has highly disturbed the environment, premining conditions and vegetation are often not achievable and objectives and criteria aimed at achieving close to these conditions have been shown to be very costly.The authors have developed a broader approach to developing mine closure plans that is based on environmental risk and gaining post-closure social, environmental and economic value. We think the focus should shift from trying to return the original landscape to returning functions and values provided on- and off-site. If it is not possible to return values on-site in a cost-effective manner, investment should be provided to deliver equivalent values elsewhere.This process can provide better stakeholder acceptance, deliver better environmental outcomes on the tenement and within the catchment and significantly reduce costs, whist fulfilling closure obligations.This framework should enable closure teams to: focus on the functions and services that are important to achieve as outcomes post-closure, rather than a focus on revegetation and replacing the premining biophysical structure engage meaningfully with stakeholders regarding closure outcomes and link outcomes to stakeholder values conduct transparent option evaluations that enable stakeholders to clearly understand the costs and benefits associated with each option and to participate in dialogue on option selection.We present examples of how the framework could be applied to identify alternate closure options that achieve equivalent value outcomes while reducing the costs of closing the mines.CITATION:Howard, B, Pershke, D and Jones, M, 2014. WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

The main purpose of these systems is to provide managers with reliable and timely information on the current state and typical tendencies of operation of the facilities under control. However until the present time no scientific and methodical ground for system monitoring of the mining companies and branches has been created. Therefore, the authors of the report have aimed to assess the current situation with regard to the researches in this field and to do analysis of the most important aspects and ways of solution of the issue under consideration.

Co-disposal of partly-dewatered mixed-plant rejects (MPR) from coal processing into spoil dumps is gaining favour amongst Australian coalmine operators in preference to conventional tailings disposal methods which require a tailings dam. Owing to their often low permeabilities and high degrees of saturation, MPR materials may be prone to the development of excess pore pressures when covered by spoil during routine dump advancement. The likelihood of dump failure will increase if these pore pressure regimes and the associated delay of shear strength development are not accounted for during waste dump design. To date however, little is known about these pore pressure regimes due to the complexities associated with their in situ measurement.This paper describes the in situ measurement of pore pressures in a cell of MPR placed within a coalmine spoil dump. Four vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs) were placed within a cell that was then filled with MPR and allowed to consolidate under self-weight before advancing an adjacent tiphead across the cell. The VWPs recorded the transient pore pressures during MPR placement and dump construction, and their interpretations are described within the context of laboratory measured parameters. Garden Well is a shear-hosted Archaean orogenic gold deposit located 100 km north of Laverton, Western Australia. The Garden Well processing plant is designed for a nominal 491 t/h milling rate and annual capacity of 4 Mt. The plant has three key innovations:1. a scrubbing circuit, expected to reduce grinding power consumption by up to 20 per cent2. a secondary cycloning/gravity circuit, providing a second opportunity for gravity gold recovery (additionally, the circuit effectively increases the leach residence time of the coarse gold bearing fraction of the leach feed by approximately 60 per cent, without any additional tankage)3. the use of mid-stream oxygenation to enhance gold recovery.The Garden Well deposit is free-milling with overall laboratory gravity/leach gold recoveries exceeding 95 per cent at a P80 grind size of 150 ¦m. Three mineralogical domains have been identified: oxide, transition and fresh, with the fresh domain having subdomains of fresh ultramafic and fresh shale. There is a high component of gravity recoverable gold in all three domains.This paper will discuss these innovations and the design challenges and the risk mitigation strategies that were adopted to ameliorate the prototyping risk. The mineral exploration industry is increasingly aware of the importance of the relationship between mineralogical data and geochemical assay results. However, until recently, the cost and time constraints of most techniques for analysing alteration mineralogy have precluded detailed alteration studies. These impediments have been reduced by the development of the Portable Infrared Mineral Analyser (PIMA), a field portable infrared spectrometer that allows rapid (in field) and cost effective analysis of alteration minerals including subtle variations in mineral crystallinity and composition.   A major application of this technology is in mapping mineralogical variations within hydrothermal alteration systems. Using actual case study examples this paper introduces two approaches to using the PIMA data: 1. for directly mapping alteration systems and using the PIMA data to provide vectors to mineralisation, and 2. for establishing empirical relationships between geochemical data and PIMA spectral data. These applications demonstrate that this technology can be an invaluable tool for targeting and mapping alteration and mineralisation.

Wet beneficiation of iron ore fines less than 1 mm typically involves a desliming stage ahead of the fine gravity separation such as spirals. The desliming is achieved using a bank of cyclones. The reject ultra-fines emerge in the overflow stream at relatively low pulp density, contain high proportions of low-value slimes, but also well-liberated iron ore ultra-fines below 0.045 mm in size; however, recovering the valuable iron ore ultra-fines from this overflow stream presents a significant challenge due to the need to remove such a large amount of water and slimes.The REFLUX™ Graviton consists of distinct 3D-printed modular units, based on REFLUX™ Classifiers, which are rotated at high speed in a large centrifuge. This system has previously been investigated under semi-batch conditions, demonstrating the potential for precision separations with significant capacity. It has been shown that the throughput advantage of the inclined channels and G forces multiply. This is the first paper presented showing the performance of this system under continuous steady-state conditions. Ultra-fine silica in the size range of 0 to 0.045 mm was fed to the Graviton at different volumetric rates, fluidisation rates and pulp densities ranging from 2 wt per cent to 30 wt per cent, in order to develop a fundamental understanding of the system’s performance. "The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

For the past 120 years, Portland cement manufacture has been undertaken on the shores of the Whangarei Harbour in northern New Zealand. Through a serendipitous conjunction of geo-chemistry, the argillaceous marl found on Limestone Island in the harbour and Tikorangi Hill provides a perfect mix of the various elements required for strong and durable cement. Golden Bay Cement, and its predecessors, have been the guardians and managers of the use of these minerals. As the demands of the concrete industry have increased, so have the needs of the manufacturing process. Careful mapping of the resource at both Portland and Wilsonville Quarries has been undertaken. This has allowed the Company to change the Quarry operation from a purely volume basis to one of selection and blending of constituent minerals. Within the manufacturing process, change has also been introduced. Analytical techniques, using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, microscopy and the application of modem data collation, has allowed fine tuning of the process. The Company now produces an increasing diverse range of products for both the domestic New Zealand market and exports to various South Pacific countries. This paper discusses the processing of limestone and æcement rockÆ into cement clinker, an intermediate synthetic mineral ground into cement. It examines control and blending regimes, and some methods used in determining process efficiency. An important technique ærediscoveredÆ has been the application of microscopy to clinker.  Examination of the major silicate minerals enables interpretation of the kiln processing and feedback to process operators. It also enables a prediction of indicated performance when ground into cement. Examples this paper give an insight into the use of minerals from Northland in some of the more important construction projects in modem New Zealand.
