Trigger action response plans (TARPs) are inherent to managing multiple hazards such as high gas content with multiple coal seams, high spontaneous combustion propensity, heat and ventilation. TARPs aim to provide assurance and guidance when the situation deviates from the original plan or there is a change in conditions that could be hazardous. Over the years, learnings from various incidents have continuously required coal operations to revisit the TARP trigger values that were based on historical data or guidance values from the industry. In most cases, the background to the basis of TARP statistical data (ie average, maximum, hourly or daily for the monitoring or sampling location) is unknown. The introduction of real-time monitoring devices to monitor gases and airflows has provided greater understanding of the hazard scenarios and their controls. This paper analyses the carbon monoxide data from operating longwall mines and compares these with the historical trigger values to understand the changes and identify improvement opportunities while setting trigger levels in the TARPs. As an example of setting trigger values, those used during the sealing of a panel are explored in terms of setting values based upon the sampling location and the level of risk. The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Simcoa Operations is the only silicon smelter in the region and since the plant was commissioned in late-1989, has progressed from supplying silicon metal to the secondary aluminium market to the current position of supplying in excess of 90 per cent of its production to the high quality chemical and primary aluminium markets. This position has been achieved through the unique advantage which Simcoa has developed within the industry, namely raw materials, people and Simcoa's ability to adopt and use modern technology. A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Simcoa has continued its quality drive through the formation of 'Simcoa's Quality Leadership Process' which is planned to make Simcoa the best silicon producer in the world.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

Using iron- and sulfur-oxidising bacteria to catalyse the breakdown of sulfides that host the gold is an important biological method for the pretreatment of refractory gold ores. Following this biological treatment a combination of chemical and physical methods are used for leaching (such as the cyanide process) and concentration (such as carbon-in-pulp or electrowinning) of gold. Although these methods are well accepted by industry, they harbour limitations in the processing of low-grade refractory ores, and regulatory agency/public acceptance of cyanide use. Thus, it is beneficial to industry to develop environmentally friendly, cost-efficient leaching and concentration techniques that are based on micro-organisms. This may soon be possible by adapting the results of recent regolith geoscience research, which has shown that micro- organisms are capable of driving a biogeochemical cycle of gold dispersion, transport and reconcentration in the supergene environment. The indigenous microbiota in biologically active soil microcosms from a number of Australian sites are capable of solubilising up to 80 wt per cent of the gold contained in these materials during 50 days of incubation. Studies using molecular microbial techniques have shown that a metallophilic bacterium, Ralstonia metallidurans, is present in biofilms on gold grains from a number of Australian sites. R metallidurans is capable of actively accumulating gold from solution, suggesting that the bacterium may contribute to the formation of secondary gold grains and nuggets. Identifying the biochemical and physiological pathways that lead to the dispersion and accumulation of gold in regolith, and quantifying the reaction kinetics of these processes may thus lead to the development of industrial bio-processing capacities for gold-containing ores.

Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. Perhaps one of the most important conferences or symposia which our Institute has conducted, was the joint Aus. LM.M./AJ.M.E. meeting held in Canberra in May 1978, with the theme International Resource Management (Woodcock, 1978).We were privileged to witness active participation in the meeting by outstanding personalities from the mining and metallurgical industries of Australia and New Zealand, the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom and to hear addresses on subjects of international significance to the mining and metallurgical industries.Our Institute is one concerned with professionalism.The principal objects of The Institute as described by our founders include, "promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those in the industries, by meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications amongst its members and associates, the information thus obtained".Sir Maurice Mawby (1968) said in his Presidential Address to the Institite, "the most important aspect of these objects was the promotion of the arts and sciences of the mining industry".Why is it then, that a large proportion of the papers given at the meeting in Canberra dealt with world wide social aspects of the mining and metallurgical industries, rather than the technology, the arts and sciences of mining and metallurgy as principal factors in international resource management?The answer is quite simple of course, and that is that the social and political factors are the principal factors which create the demand for basic raw materials and in the long term determine the costs and prices of the commodities which our professional abilities are drawn upon to produce.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. Gold mines produce unique water treatment requirements. This paper focuses on case studies of innovative processes used for treatment of water resulting from gold mining and processing. The case studies include treatment of mine dewatering water for beneficial application from an Australian gold mine, Bendigo Mining, as well as treatment for arsenic removal of tailings water from mining and processing at Goldcorp mines in Canada. Gold mining can often require dewatering to prevent groundwater seeping into and flooding the mine workings. Gold mining and processing often accumulate wastewaters in a tailings dam. The mine water can contain contaminants such as dissolved salts, iron, arsenic, manganese, heavy metals and odorous sulfates. Environmental discharge requirements as well as community needs for water drive mine operators to consider the most appropriate water treatment process. Treatment of gold mine water can require processes including oxidation, pH adjustment, coagulation, flocculation, clarification, further oxidation/adsorption of specific metals such as manganese, filtration, salt reduction utilising reverse osmosis, brine minimisation and other innovative technologies. These processes are discussed through the case studies with examination of the specific treatment process that is required. This paper uses real case studies of gold water treatment processes to explain and examine the technology and the reasons for designing specific processes. The focus is toward explaining innovative processes where the water is used for sustainable environmental discharge or treatment to a quality that can be beneficially used by the local community.

Igneous phosphate deposits located in tropical and subtropical regions of the world are characterised by low P2O5 grades, very diversified mineralogy and intensive lateral plus vertical variations in chemical composition, mineralogical assembly, rock texture, grain size, slimes content and morphology plus surface coating of apatite particles. Those variations characterise ore types with distinct behaviour in mineral processing plants. This work reviews the main challenges to concentrate those ores, addressing developed solutions. Apatite concentration requires long chain anionic collectors to conduct reverse flotation of barite (alkyl sulfate) before direct flotation of apatite (sarcosinate, sulfosuccinate and oleate) at basic medium. The long chain collectors decrease the surface tension of the flotation solution (?LV) and a particular value of 51 mN/m was found to promote the most selective separation between apatite/gangue at a particular plant. Effective control of the magnitude of ?LV in industrial plants has not been realistic because there is a lack of reliable instruments to carry out in-situ measurements. Regarding gangue depression by starch, a review is made on possible mechanisms that promote its remarkable ability to depress some minerals (Fe-oxides, ortho plus meta silicates and calcite) vis-a-vis others (quartz, apatite and layered silicates). Flotation recovery (R) of fine (20<R<30 per cent) and coarse (30<R<60 per cent) apatite particles is considerably lower than the recovery of the intermediate ones (R>70 per cent) and inadequate hydrodynamic conditions within flotation cells are the main reasons for that behavior. Once the best hydrodynamic conditions to float coarse particles are not the same to float the fine ones, flotation of coarse and fine particles is commonly conducted at separated circuits in industrial scale. Entrainment of very fine gangue particles is an important source of contamination of apatite concentrates, mainly when weathered ores are treated. In most cases, adjustments in flotation equipment (columns or mechanical cells) promote considerable improvement in the quality of final concentrates.

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

The relationship between the maceral composition of coal and the strength of the coke produced from that coal has received a great deal of attention in recent years.Studies using two Bulli Seam coals, and blends of Bulli and Wongawilli Seam coals, from the IIIawarra Measures of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales were carried out.The optimum range of vitrinite was found to lie between 45 per cent and 60 per cent (mineral matter free).Above and below this vitrinite range coke strength deteriorated. Coke strength indices increased with rank, and the optimum vitrinite content increased with an increase in rank. These changes require confirmation as trends by testing a third level of rank. It was noted that vitrinite content decreased with an increase in the specific gravity of separation of the coal.Use of petrographic analyses will increase confidence in choosing coals for coking, provided the coals are well known. Such analyses offer the possibility of greater flexibility in coal purchases and the possibility of producing a marketable blend from coals, which have limited market potential. Critical base coals for blends can be conserved.Significantly more work is required before coal reserves can be utilized to optimum advantage. This work would require extension of the studies discussed in this paper and, in particular, the testing of a wider range of rank.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Low sulfidation epithermal deposits are important sources of gold and silver, and are considered the extinct analogues of modern geothermal systems. The aerial extents of alteration halos that surround twenty-two epithermal deposits range from 4 to 315 km2, with many less than 60 km2. Deposits with alteration halos <30 km2 typically have well defined limits, whereas deposits with alteration exceeding 30 km2 are commonly complicated by overlapping alteration centres related to adjacent epithermal deposits or other deposit types (i.e. high sulfidation, porphyry). Irrespective of the physical coverage of vein or alteration halos, both large (>60 km2) and small (<20 km2) deposits can contain large amounts of gold and silver. The size ranges for twenty-one analogous liquid-dominated geothermal fields from around the world have a restricted size range of 5 to 60 km2 and irrespective of physical size, commonly have multiple zones of focused fluid upflow. From an exploration perspective the comparison between epithermal deposits and geothermal fields provide the following four important points. 1) Alteration halos surrounding epithermal deposits as well as those for analogous geothermal systems show a range of sizes, although most are less than 60 km2. Therefore, where alteration exceeds 60 km2 multiple vein systems related to several paleogeothermal systems are predicted. 2) Multiple upflow zones are common in geothermal fields of all sizes (5 to 60 km2) and although difficult to demonstrate in epithermal deposits there is a strong possibility of discovering several discrete adjacent mineralised centres. 3) The orientation of veins parallels the principle orientation of the surrounding alteration and where alteration is wider than the vein strike length, this could suggest the occurrence of adjacent veins. 4) The physical size of both veins and alteration zones is not important in relation to amount of contained gold, as both large and small can contain large amounts of gold. These conclusions provide insight into the physical size limits and hydrologic structure of these paleogeothermal systems and highlight the potential for multiple mineralisation centres within a single alteration halo.
