Nationalization of the coal mining industry in Great Britain was one of the first pieces of major legislation enacted by the post-war Labor Government in 1964. It followed a long period of economic depression with high unemployment and bad industrial relations in the coal mining industry during the 1930's, and shortages of coal during the last war. Upon nationalization, the National Coal Board took over control of the industry in 1947 and so became the biggest single employer of labor in the western world. As well as the coal mines themselves, it assumed responsibility for a great variety of other assets including coke ovens, byproduct plants, land, houses, railways and shipping wharves.

Further consideration is given to the application of the quadratic formalism to evaluate the thermodynamics of binary metallic solutions from experimental data. The use of the thermodynamic relation, in(r1/r2) dN2= 0, in the evaluation of activity data is discussed. The empirical correlations derived previously for enthalpies and entropies of solutions in Part II are shown to be predicted theoretically for a special case. The applicability of the quadratic formalism to the activity coefficients for binary organic solutions is demonstrated. DARKEN&apos; introduced a quadratic formalism describing the composition dependence of the activity coefficient in the terminal regions of binary metallic solutions. In a subsequent paper (Part II) Turkdogan and Darkeen2 extended this formalism to the enthalpy and excess entropy of binary metallic solutions, and showed that the available data for the activity coefficients and heats of mixing of many solid and liquid binary metallic solutions confirm reasonable applicability of the quadratic formalism. Much variation was noted, however, in the extent of the terminal regions from one system to another, commonly from about 10 to 70 at. pct. For the present purpose, equations derived previously need be given only for one of the terminal regions, e.g. region (I), 0 < N2 < N&apos;2: where subscripts 1 and 2 indicate quantities for components 1 and 2 and superscript ° the values at infinite dilution; other terms are: N = atom fraction, y = activity coefficient, = partial molar enthalpy of solution, ?HM = molar heat of solution, ?Sx = excess partial molar entropy, ?Sx = excess molar entropy. The heat and entropy like terms (constants) el, and S12 are defined in the following expression for the temperature dependence of a12, thus a12 £12 — s12 rnl 2.303RT 2.303 R l J Using this formalism, the thermodynamics of binary systems in the terminal regions may be described over a temperature range of experisental interest in terms of eight quantities: Lº1—Lº2, ?Sx1,?Sxº2 , £12 ,£21,fiai, S12, and S21. In the previous paper, these quantities were evaluated for many solid and liquid binary solutions, and two significant correlations were observed between these thermodynamic quantities pertaining to the terminal regions, thus [10] and [11] Combining Eqs. [9], [l0], and [ll] and rearranging gives a12 -a21 = 1.382R log rº2- 0.08(?S2xº- ?S1xº) [12] Since the second term involving entropies is small and Eqs. 1101 and [ll] are empirical relations, the above equation may be simplified to a12 = 2.74 log rº2 [13] Using the values of a&apos;s and y°&apos;s compiled in Parts I and 11, a12 - a21 is plotted against log(rº2/rº1) in Fig. 1; the line drawn has a slope of 2.74. For Hg-K at 300°C, log(yº2 /yº1)= —5.10, not shown in Fig. 1, and from correlation [13], a12 - a21 = -13.97; this is to be compared with -10.76 derived from the activity data (Part II).

IN the paper on the development of the flotation process at Broken Hill (Australia) prepared by the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and published in its Proceedings for 1930 (N. S. 80), it is stated that the concentration of ores by flotation has been established on a commercial basis in Australia since 1904 and that differential flotation was practiced at Broken Hill in 1912. Since then, progress in flotation practice throughout the world has been rapid, and during recent years the knowledge of the reactions between comparatively modern so-called chemical promoters or collecting agents and the mineral surfaces has been broadened by the published accounts off many investigators, particularly those working in American universities. Because of the benefits the Australian mining industry has derived from the flotation process, it was felt that the industry should take some part in the efforts that are being made to extend the knowledge of the principles on which the flotation process is based. Accordingly, early in 1930, three Broken Hill mining companies-the Broken Hill South, the North Broken Hill, and the Zinc Corporation-together with the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the Mount Lyell Mining & Railway Co., established a laboratory in the chemistry department of the University of Melbourne for the purpose of investigating the principles underlying flotation. Subsequently, the Burma Corporation, Ltd., expressed a desire to cooperate. The two authors are directly employed and controlled by these six organizations, and the cost of the investigation is divided equally among them. The research has been carried out under the general direction and in close cooperation with Harry Hey, chief metallurgist for the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Ltd., and the authors desire to place on record their indebtedness to him for his ever willing help and constructive criticism.

Pill Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County this area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles 1n width Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon Marion County, in the year 1888, by Albertus Voight who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops " Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used EARLY MINING The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from 1/2 to 1-yd capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907 From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-du nip skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas powerhouse near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden From the year 1888 through the year 1939, approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for the export trade Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today only three companies are operating These

INTRODUCTION Comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages; exceptions being when a final product such as aggregates, specification sand, Portland Cement, and similar products is produced. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding -- primary and secondary), natural or manufactured non-metallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media -- steel rods, steel or iron balls. This chapter will discuss general mill design and the specific design and application of the following types of tumbling grinding mills. THE 70-mile serpentine belt of eastern Quebec, producing 70 pct of the world&apos;s chrysotile, has 11 operating mines, two of which are underground, eight are open-pit, and one is both open-pit and underground. The combined operation, the Jeffrey mine, of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Ltd. is the largest producer in the group. Haulage All four of the separate operations falling under transportation at the Johns-Manville Jeffery Mine at Asbestos, P. Q., is handled by the company owned Asbestos and Danville Railway. A variety of equipment is operated over the 25 miles standard gage railway. Included in the scope of transportation are: 1-Hauling mill rock to the mill. 2-Hauling stripping and waste rock to the waste dump. 3-Hauling mill tailings to the tailings dump. 4-Hauling supplies from, and finished products to Danville. Main line tracks are permanent, but those within the pit and on the dumps have to be relocated constantly to follow the mining face and dump edges. Tracks within rock areas in the mine are laid on steel ties and can be moved by a bulldozer. Standard mechanical track shifters move tracks in dirt areas in the mine and on the dumps. Train-movements, both within the mine and over the out-lying tracks are controlled by a dispatcher located at the southwest rim of the pit. Steam locomotives haul all stripping, waste rock, and ore from the mine to the gathering yard at the northwest rim of the pit. Normally, two trains per operating shovel are used, with adjustment for optimum loading. In the event of shovel loading on the bottom level or in good stripping, service may be increased to three or four trains per shovel. From the gathering yard a 100 ton diesel-electric locomotive hauls the mill rock to the mill slips, a distance of about three miles. Electric or steam locomotives haul the waste rock and stripping to the waste dump located about two and one-half miles from the mine. Stripping cars are sprayed with a chloride solution and "gravelled" to prevent wet stripping from freezing in the cars during the cold months. Fourteen years ago, J. B. Warriner presented before the Institute a paper on anthracite stripping,&apos; describing the progress of stripping in the Anthracite Region from its beginning with an old quarry stripping at Summit Hill, which was operated more than a century ago, through various types of strippings used in 1917. This paper will briefly review the status of anthracite stripping methods from 1917 to the present day and describe in detail the stripping operation of The Hudson Coal CO. at Clinton collicry. It is not intended as a review of the work in the district—that would require a much longer paper. History and Statistics Mr. Warriner said, in part: "The sizes of shovels have gradually increased until now 70 and 80-ton shovels are the rule and larger equipment is coming in." He also referred to a large electrically operated dragline which weighed about 225 tons and had an operating radius of 125 ft. In 1917, a number of strippings used shovels of various sizes, ranging up to the 60 Marion and Bucyrus 70-C railroad type. Material was hauled away in narrow-gage side dumpers, usually of 4 or 5 cu. yd. capacities. Star-type churn drills with 4-in. bits were generally used for drilling purposes. Since 1917 wages in the anthracite field; have increased, but the higher operating costs of strippings are now being successfully combated by continuous improvements in stripping equipment, such as the development of the caterpillar or crawler shovels, the use of larger cars, better drilling equipment, the introduction of shovels of increased capacity and the adoption, in a number of instances, of standard-gage equipment for transportation. In 1918 another large dragline was introduced in the southern fields, which had been in service in the Middle West and is in use today, dipping vertically about 180 ft. to raise coal out of a stripping. About 1918, small shovels with caterpillar traction were introduced. In 1922 the 6-in. well drills began replacing the 4-in. drills, with an attendant saving to the operators. About the same time A. TEE purpose of this paper-is to describe a new process for the refining of secondary copper-base metals and a specially designed high-temperature electric-resistor furnace used in the process for the distillation of zinc from these metals. The process was used for the conversion of nickel silver to cupronickel and to recover the zinc content in metallic form. It also proved applicable and economical for the treatment of scrap brass for separating and reclaiming the copper and zinc. The relatively large furnace developed for the distillation of zinc is described in detail, for it made economically possible the direct recovery of metallic zinc from scrap brass, which is a new step in the processing of such material. Considerable interest has been shown in the utilization of the distillation furnace for other metallurgical processes, where it is of advantage to operate in a controlled neutral or reducing atmosphere, or to avoid having the processed metal in contact with refractories other than carbon, or to operate at temperatures between 3000 and 4000°F. PURPOSE OF DEVELOPMENT It was recognized early in the war effort that nickel would become a critical metal, therefore all nickel stock and alloys containing relatively high percentages of nickel were frozen immediately. Among these alloys were considerable quantities of various grades of nickel silver, an alloy containing copper, nickel, zinc, and in some grades lead, also minor amounts of iron, manganese and other constituents. At the time there was no existing plant or process to eliminate the zinc, lead, and minor constituents so as to convert this metal to cupronickel, one of the important alloys needed by the U. S. Navy for condenser parts. Therefore the Bureau of Industrial Conservation of the War Production Board requested the executives of the leading nonferrous metal companies to have their metallurgical staffs study the problem of converting this metal to cupronickel conforming to U. S. Navy Specification 44T40. The composition specified therein is as follows: nickel, 29 to 32 per cent; zinc, 1.00; iron, 0.00 to 0.60; lead, 0.05; tin, 1.20; manganese, 0.00 to 1.00; total of other elements (maximum), 0.50; copper, remainder. The problem in converting these alloys to cupronickel was the elimination of zinc, lead, iron, manganese, and other elements without appreciable loss of nickel to slags or other by-products. Revere Copper and Brass Incorporated, through its Research and Development Department, undertook to solve this problem. A Government-owned plant was built at Rome, N. Y., and there the con- version was successfully made.

Solubilities and densities are reported for alumina hydrates in NaOH solutions under the conditions of the Bayer process employed to purify alumina for aluminum production. The equilibrium constants for reactions to form A102- accurately correlate the effects of NaOH concentration on the solubilities; the temperature coefficients of the equilibria lead to heats of solution of 7.34, 4.76, and 5.24 kcal for the a trihydrate, a monohydrate, and ß trihydrate, respectively. Moderate calcination does not change the solubility of the a trihydrate but increases that of the a monohydrate. At solution temperatures above 100°C, the trihydrates transform rapidly to a monohydrate. Hydro-thermally produced a monohydrate is the stable phase above 20°C. CORNERSTONE of the aluminum industry, the Bayer process for alumina production is based on the difference in solubility of hydrated alumina in NaOH solutions between 170" and 40°C. Solubilities and densities in this system were determined thirty years ago by M. Tosterudl under the direction of J. D. Edwards and C. S. Taylor. The solubility data, which still appear more concordant than those in the literature, are employed to sort out the complex equilibria in this system. The nomenclature for the alumina hydrates is that presented in The Aluminum Industry&apos; and more recently summarized in Alumina Properties.3 a trihydrate is the purified phase analogous to gibbsite, a monohydrate is similarly akin to boehmite, and ß trihydrate is sometimes known as bayerite. Literature Goudriaan4 reviewed the early literature on alumina in NaOH solutions and presented data on the solubility at 30°C of several forms. The gel precipitated from aluminum sulphate or chloride with ammonia and dried at 130" to 140°C had the highest solubility but was unstable, its solubility being cut to one-tenth on standing in NaOH. The solubility of the gel was decreased one-third on calcination at 300" to 400°C, while that of the gel transformed in NaOH at room temperature to a crystalline trihydrate was unchanged on calcination. The preparation produced by slow hydrolysis of sodium aluminate solution with CO, in the air gave solubilities in rough agreement with later values for a trihydrate. The solubility of this form was increased slightly by the calcination. Fricke and Jucaitis5 extended the work to 30" and 60°C with a trihydrate. They also gave solubilities for ß trihydrate (bayerite b), although the residue belonging to the left branch of the solubility curve corresponded to a trihydrate. The residues at high NaOH concentrations were mono and trisodium aluminates, the latter being 3Na2O . AL2O3 • 6H2O. Solubilities of a trihydrate at 95°C and of a monohydrate at 150" and 200 °C come from the work of Magarchak.6 a trihydrate transformed to a monohydrate above 95°C. A few measurements on the solubility at 25°C of an alumina trihydrate prepared by slow hydrolysis of NaAIO, solutions were presented by Sprauer and pearce.? Their analyses showed the monosodium aluminate to have the composition Na2O.Al2O3-2.5H2O.

Introduction.-A short time ago Professor Stoughton asked the writer if he would present a paper for the February meeting of our Institute. In reply to this suggestion, some notes have been prepared relating to the subject mentioned in the title. It is to be hoped they may be of interest to our members. The research now described is the joint work of Prof. B. Hopkinson, F. R. S., and the writer. Those interested in the subject will find further data in a paper entitled The Magnetic and Mechanical Properties of Manganese Steel, which will probably be read at this year&apos;s May Meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute in London. This paper was submitted to the Institute in October last, and advance copies will shortly be available. The present paper has been drawn up by the writer on this side the water, and he has not had time to communicate with Professor Hopkinson with regard to the statements or opinions expressed herein. While the writer believes that Professor Hopkinson would in the main agree with the statements herein set forth, it should be understood that apart from the actual work described he is not otherwise responsible. The experiments described have been carried out on the material known as manganese steel, which one of the writers of these notes discovered in 1883. A paper by him describing this material was read before this Institute in 1893, entitled Iron Alloys, with Special Reference to Manganese Steel. It is not necessary to describe manganese steel nowa-days; its qualities are so well known, and its use throughout the world is on a very extensive scale.

In earlier gears, the custom prevailed of regarding the anthracite basins as cases of folding with slight development of faulting. Folding is so pronounced and, in the eastern and western Middle Fields, at times so violent, that the inference was a natural one and led to the widespread impression that practically all the disturbances of the seams could be explained in this way. The cross-sections and maps prepared forty or more years ago for the Second Geological Survey of P ennsylvania, by Mr. Ashburner under Prof. J. P. Lesley, exhibit little else than folds.&apos; So far as I can discover faults fail in the charts, except in one small case in the Henry colliery near Plainsville on the outskirts of Wilkes-Barre. Some years ago, while spending a day or two in Wilkes-Barr, under the guidance of R. V. Norris, I looked over some recent and accurate cross-sections of a numbcr of the large collieries and was deeply impressed with the peculiar behavior of some of the seams and the intervening shales. Thus, a seam might present a small, more or less overturned fold, rising 30 to 50 ft. (9 to 15m.) above its general course, and yet the movement would be taken up in the overlying shales, so as hardly to be noticeable in the seams next above or below. These and similar anomalies, especially when shown with the accuracy of engineer&apos;s surveys, possess great scientific and practical interest, bearing as they do, not alone on coal mining, but on theoretical geology and the actual behavior of strata under great compressive stresses. In preparation for the semicentennial meeting of the Institute, an effort was therefore made to secure some of the most interesting sections for presentation to the members. The collection of illustrations here shown is mainly due to Douglas Bunting of the local committee, to whom and to the contributing companies acknowledgments are due. SINCE most modem metallurgical plants are operated continuously and on a large scale, successful operation at maximum efficiency demands that an accurate knowledge of the performance at each stage of the process be available at all times. Quantitative analyses provide the most practical process guides, and it is essential to have analytical procedures that combine accuracy and speed. In continuous plant operations, large losses may occur if the time interval between the development of trouble at any stage and its recognition and correction is great. Many metallurgical plants are using rapid colorimetric and spectrochemical methods of analyses for control purposes. So-called "color coppers" may be cited as an example of the colorimetric methods, in contrast with the routine use of the ultraviolet spectrograph for the analysis of steels.42 By means of this more refined spectrochemical procedure, a complete quantitative analysis of the molten metal is obtained every few minutes. During the past two years the Physics Division and the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Company&apos;s Stamford Research Laboratories have collaborated in a study of the use of spectrochemical methods for the analysis of various metallurgical products. New methods have been developed, which have proved of practical value in plant operation. The following pages give a general review of the principles of spectrochemical methods and also the details of several specific analyses. PRINCIPLES OF SPECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS In general, it can be said that a visible light spectrochemical analysis can be performed for any ion or molecule that is naturally colored, or that can be made to react with another to produce a colored salt or complex. Whereas transmission measurements in the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the spectrum are most useful for the analysis of organic molecules, visible light measurements are of particular value for metal salts. Such elements as copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, iron, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, phosphorus, mercury, zinc, lead, and a great many others, can now be determined with a high degree of sensitivity, accuracy and dispatch. From the simplest of qualitative determinations, color analyses have been improved to such an extent that, at the present time, through the use of recording spectrophotometers, hundreds of accurate quantitative analyses can be performed by a single analyst during an 8-hr. day after the standardization curves have been established for the ions to be determined.

For instance, instead of using the terms descending and ascending with reference to the waters resulting in the two concentrations, my modified statement is as follows " The first concentration of many ore-deposits is the work of a relatively deep water-circulation, while the reconcentration is the result of reactions upon an earlier concentration through the agency of a relatively shallow water-circulation. Commonly the deep water circulation is lacking in free oxygen, and contains reducing agents, and the shallow water contains free oxygen. The deep water is therefore a reducing, and the shallow water an oxidizing agent."† Of the papers upon ore-deposits which, in vol. xxx. of the Transactions, follow my own, or which were presented at the Richmond meeting, a considerable number are wholly confirmatory of the conclusions which I have presented. In discussion of Dr. Fitterer&apos;s paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given. l We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides was traced to the use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 54 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber. With the use of the more reliable Eschka method for sulfur determination (as in coke), there was however no serious attack on the sulfides in the anode chamber with a variety of different liquids, as shown in Tables 2 and 4. There are found in nature upward of II2 minerals containing antimony, but only a few of them, listed in Table I, can be considered as antimony ore-forming minerals. Stibnite (Sb2S3), antimony sulphide or glance, is the principal ore of antimony. The oxide ores—cervantite, kermesite, valentinite, sernarmontite—occur sparingly in nature. Dry methods are generally adopted for the extraction of the metal. Electrometal-lurgical methods have had much attention in America and Germany and have not yet found, on economic grounds, practical or extended application, except in a few places. During recent years, treatment of the poor grades of the ore, especially sulphide, by ore-dressing methods, has commanded some attention and been adopted at a few plants. The impure sulphide of antimony, resulting from the liquation process, is called lLneedle," "liquated" or "crude" anti- mony, and the refined metal itself is called antimony "regulus." The different processes for the treatment of antimony ores are shown in the diagram of Fig. I. Liquation of Crude Antimony The first step in the smelting of antimony is a simple one, the process of LLliquation," which produces crude or needle antimony. Ores containing $ 50 per cent Sb are used in the liquation process for the production of crude. The temperature required for liquation is between 550&apos; and 600°C. Ores to be liquated are broken to about walnut size. If the pieces are larger than this, the low heat used will not penetrate&apos; effectively, and if they are smaller the ore tends to pack too closely for adequate penetration. A packed charge also prevents the free escape of the fused sulphide. I would like to take a moment to consider our polystyrene-silica replica technique, which was developed at the Dow Chemical Co. and which was mentioned in the paper just given by Mr. Thielsch. He stated that he feared that our replica technique would cause difficulty due to deformation of the metal as a result of the application of pressure during the molding process. We at the Dow have never had any reason to suspect that any deformation of the metal was occurring during the molding process. Our procedure has been to heat the polystyrene to a temperature of 160°C. before applying any pressure, at which temperature the polystyrene is a viscous liquid. By so doing the pressure of the polystyrene against the metal is essentially hydraulic and is therefore applied equally in all directions, which we feel should not cause deformation. Our work using this replica technique has brought forth several indications that deformation of the specimen is negligible. These indications are: I. Direct comparisons have been made between the light and electron microscopes when studying a specific spot on a metal surface.
