Introduction Wet autogenous grinding is utilized in three iron ore concentrating plants operated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI). This paper will trace some of the development in converting from the use of metal grinding mill liners to the use of rubber and will update the current performance of rubber liners in these applications. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company is a natural resources firm with major interests in iron ore mining and processing and oil and gas contract drilling. The company also has interests in oil shale, uranium, forest products, and Great Lakes shipping. The three operations discussed in this paper are the Empire and Tilden Mines on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Sherman Mine in northern Ontario, Canada. The Empire Iron Mining Partnership is managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Inland Steel, McLouth Steel, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and International Harvester. The Tilden Iron Mining Partnership is also managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Algoma Steel Corporation, Ltd., Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling-Pittsburgh, and Sharon Steel Corporation. The Sherman Mine is a joint venture managed by Cliffs of Canada, Ltd. and owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Company, Ltd. and Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. The concentrators at all three mines utilize two stage autogenous grinding. Empire and Sherman process magnetic iron ores (Table 1) and utilize magnetic, hydraulic, and flotation concentration methods. Tilden processes an oxidized iron ore (martite, goethite, and hematite) and utilizes a selective-flocculation desliming and flotation concentration flowsheet. Final grind particle sizes are 90% -325M (43k) at Sherman, 90% -500M (25,u ) at Empire and 85% -500M (25 µ) at Tilden. Developmental History The success of using rubber mill linings in Scandinavia led to the first rubber mill lining used by CCI. It was installed in a conventional primary ball mill at Republic Mine in 1964 as reported by Lindroos (1970). This was followed by additional rubber liners for both primary and regrind ball mills. The increasing use of internal furnace-boilers for power-plants at mines (doubtless due to the facility with which they may be installed by reason of their portability; the fact that they require no masonry setting, cast-iron fronts, buck-stays, etc., and practically no foundation; and the successful maintenance of their claim to equal and even superior economy, as compared with boilers of other types1) warrants this description of a method of remedying an injury which may occur, to such a furnace, even though it satisfies the requirements of the formula adopted by the U. S. Board of Supervising Inspectors of Steam Vessels.2 I refer to the sagging and deformation which may result from overloading the boilers for a considerable period—say, several days. This is sometimes unavoidable under the exacting conditions of continuous day-and-night service, and (in spite of all rules and precautions) the occasional careless or unskillful work of attendants. Such a trouble is by no means unknown on shipboard, where this type of boiler is so largely employed.

The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward 'strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union. BECAUSE of the extensive use of Alclad 24s alloy sheet in aircraft construction, there is much interest in the metallurgical changes caused by heat-treatment of this product.1,2 One of these changes is the result of the diffusion of soluble elements from the core into the coating during treatment. This paper deals with the thermal treatments that may influence diffusion and with the practical effects of diffusion on the serviceability of the product. As is well known, Alclad 24s-T sheet has a core of high-strength alloy combined with surface layers of relatively pure aluminum. The microstructure of a cross section of this product is shown by Fig. I. hot only does the relatively high-purity coating have a high resistance to corrosion, and hence serves as a mechanical barrier between the core metal and the corroding environment, but in addition this coating I exerts electrochemical protection over areas where the core may be exposed, such as cut edges. In addition, the coating affords electrochemical protection to projecting heads of *417S-T, 17S-T and 24S-T rivets, or attached members made from these alloys. Under some conditions of heat-treatment, however, diffusion of copper into the coating will alter the electrochemical relationship between the coating and the core to the extent that only partial protection will be obtained under some corrosive conditions. The reason for the electrochemical protection lies in the fact that the coating layers of pure aluminum are anodic to the alloy core. The addition of copper to aluminum produces alloys in which the potential is lower than that of the pure metal. Moreover, as the amount of copper in solid solution in z4S alloy is increased, the potential of the alloy becomes more cathodic. When heat-treated at 920°F. and quenched in cold water, 24s-T is about 0.16 volt cathodic to pure aluminum. However, copper will diffuse from the core into the coating, and if it reaches the surface the potential will be altered in a cathodic direction. Thus the potential dif-erence between the core and coating may be less than 0.16 volt, depending upon the thickness of the coating, and the time and temperature of heat-treatment. Of the methods available for determining the extent of diffusion of copper from the core into the coating of Alclad 24S-T, two are generally used; namely, the metallographic and the solution potential method.3 METALLOGRAPHIC METHODS Metallographic methods will reveal the progress of diffusion of copper into the coating. For instance, the diffusion zone in the coating intermediate between the coating surface and the core is shown in Fig. I. This photomicrograph is of a polished and etched cross section of 0.040-in. Although millions of feet of rock are drilled annually, the basic drilling mechanisms involved are not well understood. The primary reason for this lack of knowledge is because the basic principles of rock failure are not well understood and rock failure is the primary mechanism in drilling. A better understanding of the drilling mechanisms would enable a more scientific approach to the design and use of drills and bits. The paper reviews several models which have been proposed to explain various aspects of the different drilling methods. These models are described and their limitations and areas of application are discussed. Drilling rate relationships are developed and related to the basic rock failure mechanisms. TYPES OF MECHANICAL DRILLS There are three basic methods of mechanically attacking rock: 1) percussive action, 2) rotary action, and 3) combined rotary-percussive action. A percussion drill applies a force perpendicular to the rock surface and the bit moves into the rock perpendicular to the surface, forming a crater beneath it (Fig. 1). A rotary drill applies a constant thrust to the bit while a torsional force moves the bit parallel to the rock surface, breaking the rock ahead of it. A rotary-percussive drill applies both a rotary force and a percussive force to the bit which moves into the rock at an angle to the surface. The commonly used drills can be classified as: rotary-drag, diamond; percussive-hammer, piston, churn; and combination-rotary-percussive, roller.

A characteristic property of bituminous coal is that upon being heated the coal becomes plastic, evolves volatile gases, and finally solidifies into coke. This fundamental characteristic is of utmost importance and is utilized in the production of the high-temperature coke upon which the steel industry is so dependent; but from the standpoint of operation in the domestic underfeed stoker this coking tendency seriously interferes with efficient combustion. When the coke formed has too strong a structure, certain difficulties result, such as low rate of burning, slow response to heat demand, and, in extreme cases, extinction of fire. The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

GEOLOGY is of service to man in two general ways according to Heinrich Ries in The Scientific Month-ly. The first of these is in exploring and evaluating the mineral resources on which industry and civiliza-tion are built, and the second is the application of geo-logic principles to various lines of human activity, such as engineering, agriculture, chemistry, etc. Both of these are phases of economic or applied geology, but neither could be developed before geology as a pure science was more or less firmly established, and in this process it freely acknowledges its indebted-ness to some of its older sister sciences such as chem-istry, physics, botany and zoology. Chemistry and geology are mutually helpful. Various chemical industries consume large quantities of raw mineral products, but since these vary in their purity and composition, it is important for the chemist to be familiar with the irregularities of composition which the different types may show, because he is often called upon to pass judgment on new sources of supply. Here geology helps the chemist. On the other hand, the laws of physical chemistry which the chemist has worked. out are of great assistance to the geologist in explaining many geologic processes.

In basic ([KOH + KCl] with a total polarity of 2) or acidic (2N H2SO4) electrolytes and at anodic current densities of more thun 2 to 4 ma per sq cnz, n-type GaAs single crystals of lozo resistivity preferentially dissol~je forming etch tunnels with triangular or civc~ilay cross sections and of a width between 0.5 arid 5 p. These etch tunnels are oriented along any one of the four possible (111) directions of GaAs. However, their growth occurs only in one direction of a given (111) whick apparently is determined by the atomic sequence Ga —As (and not the rezlerse) in respect to an individual valence bridge in the crystal. It is concluded from comparison with the cubic lattice structure of GaAs that the etch tunnels represent macroscopic evidence for the tetrahedral bonds and their polar properties. If the anodic current density is increased the tunnel fomation results in the development of a fibrous surface layer consisting of GaAs. The latter separates frorn the substrate (in an anodic s~irface disintegration process) by the growth pressure of an As,0, filnz forming in the interior of the fibrous layer, 100 to 200 µ under the surface, at more than about 50 ma per sq cni. The fibrous GaAs film has the same crystallographic orientation as the substvate and represents a skeleton of the original crystal. Since the etch-tunnel density in a separated GaAs layer is about 108 c?n-', and the etch tunnels develop only along (111) in a given polar direction, it is assurraed tlmt the dislocations have no influence on the growth of these tunnels. ElECTROLYTIC treatment of smooth surfaces of poly- and single-crystalline GaAs at high anodic current densities causes the formation of porous surface layers.' This phenomenon suggests comparison with effects being observed with magnesium,' indium,, gallium,4 and aluminum5 and known as "anodic disintegration". The purpose of the present paper is to explore and to explain the reasons for the formation of such surface layers on GaAs and, in particular, to investigate the influence of the lattice polarity of this III-V compound semiconductor in the (111) direction on the anodic dissolution behavior. GaAs SINGLE CRYSTALS For the experiments described below GaAs single crystals from the Monsanto Co., St. Louis, Mo., were used. Their impurity levels were below 1 ppm and their dopant levels between 1 and 100 ppm. They were grown in (111) using the Czochralski or the gradient-freeze technique. The crystals had n-type conductivity and electric resistivities between 1 and 5 ohm-cm. EXPERIMENTAL The GaAs single-crystal rods were cut perpendicularly to (111) into wafers of about 1 mm thickness using a wire-blade crystal slicer and an aqueous slurry of Sic or a diamond saw. The orientation of the faces of these wafers were checked by Laue back-reflection patterns. If there was a deviation from (111) the faces were abraded under a certain angle using grinding paper and distilled water. The damaged surface layer was removed from each crystal by chemical etching with a mixture of 1HF:1HNO3: 1H20 or 2HF:1HNO3:2HAc (glacial). {110) faces were obtained by mechanical cleavage, producing surfaces which did not require a further treatment. The GaAs wafers were mounted using "alligator" clamps instead of soldered electrical contacts.' Only the bare crystal surfaces were dipped into the electrolyte. The clamps were coated with insulating wax to prevent any contact with the electrolyte. The experiments were carried out in aqueous 2 N H2so4,' or in an aqueous solution of KOH and KCl1 (1 mole KOH + 1 mole KCl in 1000 cu cm solution). Anodic current densities up to several hundred ma per sq cm were applied for periods between 30 sec and 2 hr. For the purpose of investigating the initial steps of disintegration the anodic current density applied never exceeded 20 ma per sq cm. The films which partially separated from the anodic surfaces under high-field conditions were treated with KOH to further their detachment by dissolving the As2O3 formed. The washed and dried films were pasted to strips of filter paper, and Laue pictures were made. The back-reflection patterns obtained were compared with those of the original anode surface before and after anodic dissolution. Furthermore, space reciprocal lattices7 were constructed from asymmetric rotation crystal patternsa which permitted the determination of the crystallographic orientation of the detached films of the corrugated anodic surfaces. The disintegration products were identified from assymmetric powder patterns.8 The polarity of the {111) faces was determined by chemical etching with mixtures of 1HF:1H2O2(30 pct): 2H2O or 1HNO3:2H2O. Different patterns on each of two inverse (111) sides appeared.'-l8 The correlation of these patterns to the Ga{111) or the As(111) side has already been established by the use of light figures,18-20 by X-ray diffraction near the absorption edges of gallium and arsenic,'lmZ4 and by LEED measurements.25 The geometric structure of these surfaces and the interior of the anodically attacked crystals were observed and photographed with a high-power microscope using oil immersion objectives up to magnification of X1720.

Six intermediate phases occur in the Nb-Zn sysThese phases form by peritectic reactions at 1120°, spectively. The Nb Zn 15 phase appears as the minor phase in the eutectic structure, and the terminal phases remain nearly pure niobium and zinc even at high temperature. Vapor -pressure measurements on the four high-temperature phases (Nb Zn to Nb Zn 3) permitted estimates of the composition limits of these phases and the calculation of approximate values of AFO, AH°, and AS°. 1 HE present study of the constitution of the binary Nb-Zn system was a part of an analysis of the mechanism by which coatings of the Nb-Zn intermediate phases protect niobium against oxidation at high temperature.' Since the primary interest in these phases was in coating service, attention in this study was given principally to the four phases stable at high temperature with only cursory attention to the two low-temperature phases. The solubility studies of niobium in zinc by Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 and the reports from the present study of the Nb-Zn coating represent the only published data pertaining to this system. Previously Hodge, Evans, and Hoskins, in an experimental survey, had noted that niobium was not resistant to attack by molten zinc, but no further observations were reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES a) General. The nature of the binary Nb-Zn system precluded the use of more conventional methods of determining the phase equilibria such as thermal analyses of a series of cast alloys. An extrapolation of the liquidus data of Martin, Knighton, and Feder2 to higher temperatures suggested that the solubility of niobium in zinc would remain low in the entire temperature range of interest. The preliminary results of the present studies showed that all of the high-temperature intermediate phases form by peritectic reactions. Thus the sluggish nature of this type of reaction and the steepness of the liquidus indicated that thermal analyses would not yield reliable data. The peritectic reactions, of course, precluded the direct formation of samples of the individual phases from the melt. b) Materials. The niobium and zinc used in the present studies were of high purity. The niobium, in the form of 0.1-in.-diameter rods, contained 30 ppm 0, 30 ppm N, and 15 ppm C. INTRODUCTION The flow potential in a pattern flood element is a function of the mobility ratio and how far the injected flood front has gone.1,2 For a waterflood project having a mobility ratio of one, the conductance—which is the flow rate per unit pressure drop (q/Ap)—-will remain the same throughout the life of the flood. If the mobility ratio is favorable ( < I), the conductance of the project will drop continuously throughout the operation. If, on the other hand, the mobility ratio is unfavorahlc. the conductance ratio will increase continuously. Therefore, if the reservoir engineer wishes to predict either the rate at a specified pressure or the pressure at some rate for a secondary recovery project, he must know how the conductance will vary during the flood. EACH year it becomes apparent that geophysical activities in the fields of mining and engineering are increasing in the number and variety of applications. Many mining companies are including, as part of their exploration programs, geophysical surveys. The value of geophysics in highway and structural foundation investigations has been realized and is now an important part of subsurface investigations in conjunction with soil and rock borings. United States of America One of the major orebody discoveries of the year is that of the Grace mine near Morgantown in Berks County, Pa. This orebody, now under development by the Bethlehem Steel Co., was discovered by an airborne magnetometer survey carried out by the Aero Service Corp. of Philadelphia. The orebody, the geological occurrence of which is similar to those existing at Cornwall, Pa., was found at a depth of 1500 ft under a cover of Triassic sediments and is reported to have a reserve of well over 100 million tons. Shaft sinking and other construction work has started at the site. Resistivity work was carried out at proposed dam sites in New York and in connection with the search for fluorspar veins in Kentucky. Spontaneous polarization investigations were pursued in the Appalachian region at various localities from North Caro¬lina up into Virginia. This work was done in connection with the search for sulphide-bearing structures. Several indications were proven by subsequent drilling to correspond to unknown sulphide deposits, a few of these occurring in the vicinity of properties long under exploitation. Refraction seismic methods applied to bedrock depth determinations as related to water problems on the Marquette Range and the extension of the. regional gravity survey on the Menominee Range to learn the major structural features of the area have been reported by, Lloyal O. Bacon. A gravity survey has been completed in the vicinity of Tioga, Bradford County, Pa. with a gravity profile being observed from Tioga east to the Delaware basin. The Indiana Geological Survey is concerned with a state-wide gravity survey. Judson Mead, University of Indiana, reports that the bulk of the State Survey&apos;s geophysical work, however, has been "seismic refraction work in connection with drift thickness problems. The survey has made almost 1000 determinations in areas of moderately thick drift. The results of this work are of interest to both the coal mining industry and to the stone industry." In the southeastern Missouri lead belt, magnetic electrical resistivity, and electromagnetic applications for the discovery of new lead deposits have been used with success. A gravity survey of the residual-barite deposits in Washington County, Mo., was made during the summer season with preliminary computations of tonnages checking with tonnages mined. Robert M. Dryer, of the University of Kansas has had considerable success in mapping structural features in southwestern Kansas with the gravity meter and is now engaged in tracing shoestring sands in eastern Kansas by resistivity surveys. Several, foundation sites were investigated in greater St. Louis using electrical resistivity and seismic refraction methods with success. A minimum amount of drilling data was available for checking and interpreting the geophysical results (Fig. 1). It is to be noted that geophysical methods are finding a place in subsurface investigations for highway and foundation problems. Interest has been so keen in this field that the American Society for Testing Materials, at its annual meeting in June of this year, devoted one session of its symposium on surface and subsurface reconnaissance to geophysical papers involving the application of the electrical resistivity and seismic refraction methods to subsurface studies. At least three major mining companies in the United States have entered the field recently in geochemistry. The program of research and development of geochemical techniques by the U. S. Geological Survey continues. Experimental field projects were conducted over lead-silver, cobalt, copper and zinc deposits in Idaho, Oregon, California, Wisconsin and Montana. Similar experiments were carried on by M. P. Nackowski in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and in the Tri-State Zinc district by R. Maurice Tripp with favorable results. Geophysical activities of the U. S. Geological Survey for 1951 were extensive and varied. About 21,000 miles of airborne magnetic and 10,000 miles of airborne radioactivity traverse were flown in 1951 by the U. S. Geological Survey. A total of 35,000 miles of aeromagnetic traverse were compiled, 57 aeromagnetic maps were published and 14 preliminary maps were placed on open file. Airborne surveys were made in Aroostook County, in the Katahdin and Dead River areas in Maine; in northwest Washington; over the Mother Lode district in California; in northeastern and northwestern Minnesota; and in the New York-New Jersey highlands. Of special interest were the surveys in Washington, where highly magnetic Eocene lavas gave information on structures in the overlying Miocene sedimentary rocks and in northeastern Minnesota over the Duluth gabbro. The latter survey was made following the discovery of nickel-copper mineralization in the gabbro near its contact with the Virginia slate. The principal ground geophysical surveys for metalliferous deposits and related purposes were made in the Colorado Plateau region, where electrical surveys assisted in prospecting; in Aroostook County, Maine, where ground magnetic surveys, following aeromagnetic surveys, have permitted tracing

A RKANSAS is not only a geologist&apos;s paradise, but Ait is also particularly fortunate in possessing a wide variety of mineral resources. The future mineral production and mineral industry of Arkansas, like the other states in Mid-America, will probably depend to a large degree on efforts to increase the exploitation of the non-metalliferous deposits of the state. The term nonmetalliferous, as used in this paper, embraces all types of mineral deposits, except fuels, water, and those deposits from which, after bene-ficiation, metals are ultimately derived. For example, bauxite is the ore of aluminum, but a considerable portion of the bauxite mined eventually is employed in the production of nonmetallic alumina, an important oxide in the abrasive and ceramic industries. The bulk of the production, however, becomes metallic aluminum and therefore this type of mineral resource is considered metalliferous and is omitted from this paper. Arkansas&apos; nonmetalliferous deposits are of many different types, too numerous to discuss in detail in a single paper; therefore, only their salient features are presented. Many types of deposits such as limestone, glass sand, novaculite, shale, and sandstone are exposed over wide areas, providing inexhaustible reserves. Other types of deposits, such as barite and tripoli, contain large reserves which certainly are not unlimited. Still other types of deposits, such as celestite, kaolin, and vermiculite, appear to occur in small isolated deposits containing relatively small reserves. Of course, all of Arkansas&apos; nonmetalliferous deposits probably have not as yet been recognized, nor have all of the known deposits been prospected, tested, and evaluated. Various types of deposits are too low grade or too limited in extent to be profit- ably produced by today&apos;s standards. In the case of other deposits, the known uses are few in number, thus acting as a retarder to their development. Due to anticipated technologic advancements, the future demands of industry are not expected always to be the same as they are today, and therefore idle deposits or those of current limited production may readily become the important revenue producers of the future. The types of nonmetalliferous deposits discussed here include: clays, shales, and slates; silica deposits including glass sand, novaculite, tripoli, sandstone, chert, and quartz crystals; limestone and dolomite; barite; gypsum; celestite; nepheline syenite; green-sand; phosphate; vermiculite; fuller&apos;s earth; ben-tonite; diamonds; sand, and gravel. The location of the various types of deposits are presented on the accompanying map (fig. 1). Symbols indicate the general area of occurrence. Many deposits, such as limestone, shale, novaculite, and so on, are represented by formations which could only be properly shown on a geological map. In these instances only active deposits or those of exceptional merit are indicated by symbols on the map. A general northeast-southwest line divides the interior highland from the Gulf Coastal and Mississippi Alluvial Plains of south and east Arkansas. The data presented in this paper are only a surnmary of a portion of a more comprehensive survey and study of the natural resources of the entire state.&apos; The study was sponsored and underwritten by the Arkansas Power and Light Co., Little Rock, as a public service to the state and its residents. Historical-From the beginning of time, all ingenuity of mankind has been concentrated upon the methods of finding gold and unusual deposits in the earth. An illustration (Fig. 1) from the old treatise by Agricola, "De Re Metallica," published in 1580, will serve to show the im-plicit faith of that generation in divining methods. However, it was not until 1920 that real progress was made in prospecting by using the latest advances of the physical sciences. The public interest was stimulated by the successes of these methods on the part of commercial oper-ators, and governmental agencies received many requests for information concerning their relia-bility. There were also, in the late 1920&apos;s.high- pressure mine-promotion schemes which used geophysical methods in a very questionable manner, symbolized in Figure 2 as of 1928 by an elec-trified forked stick. Authoritative information concerning such practices for public protection was needed to curb such notorious undertakings. Dr. Scott Turner, then Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, thoroughly understood the situation and was first in the governmental de-partments to recognize the possible value of a study of modern prospecting methods. The Bureau of Mines began this investigation by employing Drs. A. S. Eve and D. A. Keys of McGill University for short periods in the summer in 1927. Their first publication [see 1 of "References" at end of paper] served to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles which underlie geophysical prospecting. This was followed by a second publication [21 giving the results of field-tests. In the light of the rapid improvements during the intervening ten years, these two papers take a historical position. Later a full-time position under Civil Service was planned by the Bureau of Mines for con-tinuous investigations and research concerning geophysics and its applications to prospecting. It was Turner&apos;s idea that. since the oil-industry had been making very rapid progress with good results, if mineral mining could also benefit to the same degree, it would be of great help to that industry.

The influence of carbon on tensile strength, tensile ductility, transformation kinetics, and grain growth characteristics of selected Ti-Mo base alloys was studied. No systematic influence of carbon in tensile strength or significant deleterious effect on tensile ductility was observed. There was a marked increase in transformation rate due to carbon. Dispersed carbides exert a marked inhibiting effect on grain boundary migration, and thus effectively prevent grain coarsening during solution treatment in the ß phase field. AS part of a research program directed toward the illumination of factors governing modes of transformation, transformation kinetics, and mechanical properties obtainable through these transformations by heat treatment, Ti-Mo base alloys were selected for study. The binary system is a characteristic phase diagram type which has been studied in some detail&apos;, &apos; in relation to transformation kinetics and mechanical properties. Although carbon bearing alloys have acquired a bad reputation, the possibilities of melting titanium under conditions which occasion some carbon pickup are very attractive. It is therefore of considerable importance to know whether carbon, present as a dispersed carbide phase, is actually deleterious when all other detrimental factors are minimized. Basic alloy compositions containing nominally 3, 5, 7, and 11 pet Mo were prepared with systematic carbon addition up to 1 pet by weight. Various of these alloys were subjected to a series of critical and definitive experiments to delineate the effect of carbon on the transformation behavior and associated mechanical properties. Experimental Procedure Alloys were prepared from 115 Bhn magnesium-reduced sponge titanium. This sponge analyzed ap- proximately 0.05 pet C. Ti-Mo and Ti-C master alloys were made by arc-melting the sponge with high purity (99.9 + pet) molybdenum and spectro-scopic grade graphite, respectively. Alloys were then prepared from the master alloys and sponge by double are-melting. One kg ingots were prepared by melting in a nonconsumable electrode furnace. These ingots were forged at 1000°C to &apos;/z in. rods, and cleaned and processed into electrodes for the second melting operation. The final ingots were ground to remove surface defects, then forged again to 1/2 in. or 3/8 in. diam rods for processing to test samples. It is significant that all of the alloys at all carbon levels forged satisfactorily. For convenience, the alloys will be referred to throughout the text by their nominal analyses. Samples for the study of transformation rates were prepared from 1/2 in. diam round stock. They were then solution treated in a helium filled tube furnace at 1000°C for 30 min prior to the isothermal transformation treatments in lead bath furnaces. Temperature control in both cases was within ±3oC. Following the isothermal transformation treatments the samples were water quenched. These experiments were carried out before the general adoption of the resistometric procedure for kinetic studies. The data were therefore obtained entirely by metal-lographic analysis. M, temperature was also determined by the metallographic method. Shoulder-type tensile test pieces were machined from heat treated, 1/2 in. diam slugs to provide a 0.252 in. test diam and a 1 in. gage length. The isothermal-type heat treatments were chosen from previous data&apos; to provide three levels of strength and ductility.

IN discussing present-day business and industrial troubles we easily drop into the habit of clinical diagnosis. Talk of this kind, with its emphasis on suspicious symptoms and abnormal tendencies, makes us all morbid. As an English essayist has put it, we may thus induce a melancholy, temper that simply in-vites the ministrations of social and political quacks. It is far better-because nearer the truth-for us to recognize that our condition is in no sense diseased, that our body politic, social and economic, is suffering merely from growing pains; that America is not de-cadent-indeed, that any lapses from staid normality are traceable to the, excesses of youth. Our chief .trouble, then, is only that our industrial state is still young; it may be that we have been growing too fast. The growth in the industrial development of our country from pioneer days to the present time has been marvelous. Too many of us, however, take all this as a matter of course-we credit this record of American progress to our American genius alone. Too often we overlook the fundamental relationship between resources and progress-that man is aided and even guided by Nature. The fact is, social advance, indus-trial progress, national prosperity all have their ma-terial basis in natural resources. In furnishing the needed mineral raw materials to the great manufac-turing industries of the United States there has been no halt, but rather a general acceleration. No other phase of American activity can show-equal advance. As the decades have passed, the winning of mineral wealth has progressed from the role of a stimulus for western exploration to that of the foundation for nation-wide business. In 1890 the Sherman law was passed; since then the population of the United States has about doubled. Since then, too, thevalue of the annual product of the mines of this country has increased better than eight-fold-from 650 millions to 51/ billions of dollars. Since then the four largest branches of the mineral industry, which supply the iron and copper, the bituminous coal and petroleum-the bone and sinew and the energy of all other American industries-have increased their annual output nearly ten-fold as to value and six-fold as to quantity. Such a growth in the volume of mineral output must be taken as a true measure of the ex-ceptional service rendered by the mines of the United States. Not only is this a much larger country than it was 38 years ago, but its growing mineral industry has met demands that have been out of all proportion to the growth of the population.
