Eluropium -activated yttrium vanadate, excited by short- and long-wavelength ultraviolet radiations, shows enzission lines near 6100A, the principal ones correspondirzg to transitions of EU+3 ions from 5Do to the F2 energy level. The ~neclmlallistns of absorption and etnissiorz of this phosphor have been empirically studied. The absorption is caused by two separate processes in the matrix. The phosphor YVO4:Eu and tlie matrix YVO, haue essentially the same resectance spectra in the region 2500 to 4000if. There are two broat ah~o?~ption bands: natnely, around 2600 and 3600A regions. Whet? compared with the reflectance spectra of the constituent oxides, namely, Y2O3, V205, Eu2 03, the absorption bands of the tnatvix and the phosphor in the short- and long-wavelength ultraviolet regions can be interpreted as due to charge-transfer processes involving i) Y-O and ii) 17-0, respecti~~ely. The excitation spectrum' of the phosphor has two broad bands with peaks at about 2600 and 3600A regions. U can be postulated that enevgy absorbed under short- crud long-wavelength ultraziolet excitatzon, respectzcely, by Y-0 and V-O parts of the niatrix is transferred by radcatio~zless process to EU+3 ions. Thzs postulate can empirically be proved on the basis of the spectra of the systems (YVO4,-YPO4,):Eu. PO? ~ons do not have' any appreciable absorption in the short or long uv regions. When P0't3 ions are substitlited for v0i3 ions in YVO,:Eu phosphors, the absorption and excitation in the lo~zg uv region are gradually reduced. Ailoreover, the £«+3 emission under 3650A excitation is decreased zuitlz increase in PO^ content, lt~lzereas the emission under 253711 excitation remains esserztially constant with as IILUCIL as 60 mole pct of YPO, in YVO,:En. EUROPIUM-activated yttrium vanadate (YV04:Eu) is a well-known phosptor.'-3 When excited by cathode rays, 2537, or 3650A radiations, YV04:Eu emits typical narrow-band spectrum of EU'3 fluorescence in the region of 5900 to 7100A, a very strong maximum occurring at about 6190A. This emission is considered to be due to 5Do — 7F2 transition of excite: EU*3 in 4f state. Moreover, the emission under 3650A excitation increases with temperature markedly. Because of these properties, YV04:Eu phosphor finds wide application in industries, namely, in color television tube, laser, and high-pressure mercury-vapor lamps. It is the purpose of this paper 1) to present the empirical study of the mechanism of absorption and excitation of YV04:Eu phosphor by ultraviolet radiation, and 2) to offer an explanation for the process of emission. It should be mentioned that a theoretical discussion on the mechanism of absorption in terms of the crystal or ligand field theory is beyond the scope of this paper. Empirical studies presented here are based primarily on spectroscopic and crystal-chemical investigations. EXPERIMENTAL i) Preparation of Materials. The synthesis of vanadate phosphorinvolves preparation of (Yi-.tEuj^Oj, blending the mixed oxide with an oxidic compound of vanadium, such as V205 or NH4V03, and firing the mixture at about 1000°C for several hours when YVO4:Eu forms as a primary phase. (Y1-xEux)203 compositions are prepared by coprecipitation of oxalates, and igniting them at about 1000°C. The vanadium compound is added in excess of the stoichiometric proportion for fluxing purposes. The charge is cooled, ground, and the excess of vanadium is removed by a hot wash (-80°C) of alkali or ammonia. Y(VP)04:Eu samples are prepared by mixing (Yi-xEux)203 with stoichio-metric proportions of (NH4)2HP04 and the vanadium compound. The mixtures are prefired at 700" to 800°C for 1 or 2 hr, then ground and refired at 1150°C. The firings of the phosphors are done in silica crucibles, and the homogeneity of the final products checked by X-ray diffraction analysis. ii) Spectroscopic Measurements. Diffuse reflectance sqectra of the samples within the range 2500 to 7000A are obtained by using CaF2 as standard in Cary Recording Spectrophotometer, Model No. 14. The emission spectra from phosphor plaques, excited under different ultraviolet sources, are obtained by a direct-recording spectroradiometer4 adapted with a grating monochromator with nearly constant dispersion. Maximym sensitivity in the spectral region from 2500 to 7000A is obtained with a quartz-windowed, S-20 response p$otomultiplier. The total' band pass is kept about 30A. The spectra are calibrated against the light from a standard tungsten filament lamp reflected from a magnesium-oxide plaque. Brightness data given throughout this report $re measured from the height of the main peak (6190A) of the emission spectra. The excitation spectra are measured using sodium salicy-late as standard. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The diffuse reflectance spectra of both pure and activated YV04, along with their constituent components, are shown in Fig. 1. YVO4 shows two broad absorption bands, namely, around 2500 and 3600A, respectively. Since there is little difference between the reflectance spectraoof YVO4 and YVO,:Eu in the uv region (2500 to 4000A), it can be postulated that excitation of the phosphor is mainly due to absorption by the matrix, i.e., YVO4. The question, now, is whether the matrix (Yv04) is excited as a whole, or different components are responsible for the two absorption bands. ThE solution of a diatomic gas such as 0, or N2 in a metal usually follows Sieverts' law; i. e., Here C is the solute concentration at equilibrium and P, the gas pressure. The proportionality constant Ks is also the equilibrium constant for the reaction 1/2 02 (at pressure, P) - 0 (in solution at [21 concentration., C). to use oxygen as an illustrative gas. Sieverts' law is therefore interpreted to indicate that diatomic gases go into metallic solution atomically and that the solute "gas" atoms interact negligibly with each other. Of course, this interpretation is strictly valid only over the temperature interval in which the reaction indicated in [Z] can be investigated. At temperatures several hundreds of degrees below this interval, the possibility of interactions between solute atoms is conceivable. Indeed, from internal-friction measurements some evidence for the existence of groupings of oxygen atoms in tantalum solid solutions was presented a few years ago.1,2 Over a range of solute concentration, the experimental oxygen internal-friction peak in tantalum, measured as a function of temperature at constant frequency of vibration, can be described as the sum of two elemental peaks, each corresponding to a separate relaxation process. At 0.7 cps, the height of the elemental peak found at 137°C is proportional to the oxygen content, whereas the height of the one at 162°C varies as the square of the oxygen concentration. The 137°C peak was presumed to arise from the stress-induced ordering of oxygen atoms among various classes of octahedral sites in the manner proposed by Snoek.3 The 162°C peak was attributed to a somewhat similar stress-induced ordering process, in which each oxygen atom was interacting with a neighboring oxygen atom. Similarly, the experimental peak due to nitrogen in tantalum can also be described as the sum of two peaks. The height of one varies as the nitrogen concentration and the other as the square of this quantity. In fact, some evidence of solute interactions exist for all oxygen and nitrogen solid solutions of Group V transition metals. However, the interaction energy was not obtained previously for any alloy. The determination of this quantity, as a part of a more intensive study of the interaction between oxygen atoms in solid solution in tantalum, is reported in this paper. PRINCIPLE OF THE EXPERIMENT Consider an equilibrium in a solid solution of tantalum between oxygen atoms which are bound together pairwise and those solute oxygen atoms which are not so associated. 20 (Ta) - O2 (Ta) [3]

AT THE beginning of February the British Government announced acceptance of the American terms for funding the war debt, the main features-being as follows: Interest rate of 3 per cent. for the first 10 years and then 3 ½ per cent. up to the final extinguishment of the debt at the end of 62 years. The interest from the time since the loans were made to the actual beginning of the funding arrangement to be recomputed at 4 1/4 per cent. instead of the 5 per cent. rate now in effect. Congress ratified the contract respecting the British debt. The ship subsidy bill was relegated to the rear, which is indeed an end to the project. The natural consequence of this will be a liquidation of the Govern-ment's shipping business. The joint committee on the reorganization of Govern-ment departments made its report to the President. In general this seems to offer a well-considered plan for the coordination of Government service. The pro-posals respecting the bureaus that are particularly associated with the mining industry may be subject to criticism. According to the committee's plan, the Geological Survey remains in the Department of the Interior, but the Bureau of Mines and the compilation of the statistics of mineral production are transferred to the Department of Commerce. The Lausanne conference among the European powers came to an end early in February, without any treaty having been signed, owing to the refusal of the Turks to accept the ultimatum of the Allies. Theoreti-cally this left conditions in a state-of war between the Allies and Turkey. However, no actual movements have resulted. The French and Belgians continued to hold the Ruhr district of Westphalia, extending their lines and administration of the region. The Germans adhered to the policy of passive resistance. In the Parliament of Great Britain the French and Belgian policy was plainly declared to be unwise and dangerous. French and Belgian industries, moreover, were troubled by strikes among their own coal miners for higher wages. The Poles and Lithuanians engaged in border war-fare;. the civil war in Ireland continued. The rest of the world was quiet insofar as military operations are concerned.

This regiment, originally known as the First Engineer Reserve, will be remembered as the one recruited in New York City through the efforts of the Joint Military Committee of the National Engineering Societies. It was sent to England in August, 1917, and, after a few clays, forwarded to France and attached for immediate service to the British Expeditionary Force, without any opportunity for further field-training. This circumstance has led in some quarters to the impression that the regiment was one of engineers and mechanics merely, and had never been drilled under arms; whereas, in fact, it had received such instruction at Fort Totten for some time previous to its embarkation. It is true that in the famous affair of the German counter-attack after Byng's victory near Cambrai, the men of the Eleventh Engineers fought with pick-axes and tools, as well as with rifles borrowed from dead or wounded soldiers; but that was because they had left their own arms in camp, while doing the railroad-building work to which they had been detailed. The accomplishment of that work is really more remarkable than the behavior of the men under a German surprise-attack. It was before that counter-attack, and immediately after Byng's advance, that Field-Marshal Haig issued his despatch, announcing that the engineers deserved as much credit for that victory as the infantry, having performed miracles in keeping the railway transportation up to the fighting line. Indeed, the subsequent scrimmage, of which so much has been said, was ?Date possible only by the extraordinary position of the engineers at the very front, instead of in the rear, as might have been expected of them. A letter recently received from an officer of the regiment says: We have only recently been receiving the New York papers of early December, in which our regiment seems to have received much favorable mention. The stories were, in the main, true. Our men behaved themselves creditably, and certain of the officers received special mention for valor. Two of our 2d lieutenants were pro-moted to 1st lieutenant rank by special orders of General Pershing for "gallant con-duct in action," and about four others would have been decorated by the British,

DURING the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of stream-lined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other indus-tries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phos-phorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater impor-tance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appear-ance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements.

IT is indeed an honor to have been asked to participate in the program which celebrates the seventy-fifth birthday of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. This great organization has occupied an important place in the professional and industrial life of this country-of the world. Its members have explored the far reaches of our globe and have played a great part in the discovery, extraction and utilization of the mineral resources upon which our civilization so largely depends. These engineers, together with the restless prospectors, on the one hand, and the scientists, on the other, have literally been the advance scouts of our modern way of life. As such, we owe them a deep and lasting debt of gratitude. May I, therefore, wish many happy returns to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and express the hope that it may long continue to be of great service, as it has been in the past. The subject assigned to me-Iron Ore and the Steel Industry-is, indeed, important, as one considers the future of our world. I shall give as few figures as possible. Pertinent statistical data are included in the tables in this chapter, which, I think, will prove interesting. Many studies of iron-ore reserves have been -published and are available; hence I shall limit myself mainly to an interpretation of these figures. Beryllium was mixed by powder. metallurgical techniques with copper, nickel, iron, and chromium, respectively, to form beryllium -rich binary alloys which Mere then extyuded and rolled transtverse to the extrusion direction. The effect of each alloying element was determined by tensile testing. In solid solution, small amounts of iron and nickel had an embrittling effect, while copper in solution increased the strength but had no effect on ductility. The effect of chromium was complicated and not readily explainable. Observations concerning the planes and modes of fracture were made. BERYLLIUM possesses some very attractive properties for general design applications, especially its strength to weight ratio which is approximately twice that of aluminum and three times that of stainless steel. Equally significant, however, is its combination of high moduli , high strength (approximately 70,000 psi tension and 40,000 psi shear), and low density (0.0658 Ib per in.3), which has made it a potentially important structural material for use in high-speed aircraft and missiles. The main attractions of beryllium are most marked when compared to other constructional alloys now in use. For example, while its density is approximateiy that of magnesium, its modulus of elasticity is approximately seven times that of magnesium, three times that of titanium, four times that of aluminum, and 1 1/3 times that of steel. Furthermore, its relatively high strength and high melting temperature permit design for service temperatures to about 1100°F. It is felt by the aircraft industry in general,' that the high cost of beryllium can easily be amortized by the savings in fuel costs, and increases in aircraft payload and range. The only factor which has prevented the use of the metal in structural applications is its lack of sufficient ductility. It is this property that has retarded the development and utilization of beryllium. Beryllium's modes of deformation, Fig. 1 indicate that the main fracture planes at room temperature in a randomly oriented sample are the (0001) basal planes; the (1150) prism planes are the planes of secondary fracture.' Klein, Macres, Woodard, and Greenspan3 obtained elongations of up to 40 pct in beryllium sheet rolled above 700°C when the (0001) basal planes were oriented parallel to the plane of the sheet (see Fig. 2).

The discovery of oil in 1901 on the Spindletop dome, Texas, inaugurated a new industry on the Gulf Coast, an industry which has gran with the discovery of successive fields, until today it engages the services of thousands of workers and employs enormous capital. New fields are being discovered from time to time and doubtless some still remain to be found, though of late years discoveries have become more infrequent. Nowadays several hundred dry holes are drilled each year in a fruitless and blind effort to discover new fields, for as yet geologic science has developed no effectual method of locating the coastal oil deposits in advance of drilling. Moreover despite the occasional discovery of new fields, the total production of the Gulf Coast is today no greater than it was in 1906, for the added production of the new fields has been offset by the rapid decline and more or less complete exhaustion of some of the older ones. Careful geologic work within the fields has in some cases increased the production temporarily, but has developed no really new supplies. The Gulf Coast oil industry seems to have passed its period of greatest expansion and to be declining at a fairly steady rate, and this condition is naturally viewed with alarm by the more farsighted operators. In my opinion, the time has come for the adoption of radical and aggressive methods of prospecting; and a fraction of the money wasted yearly in drilling shallow wells in hopeless locations might well be devoted to this purpose. Many facts lead me to believe that all the salt-dome oil has had a common origin; that it has migrated up from considerable depth along lines of structural weakness; and that a deep well, properly located, stands an excellent chance of discovering the parent reservoir and thus of developing new and probably great supplies. This paper is presented as a discussion—necessarily hypothetical and based largely on personal opinion—of the possibility of encountering deep-seated oil deposits beneath the salt domes. Salt-dome Structure All of the oil produced in the coastal region of Texas and Louisiana is probably associated with salt domes, though in Goose Creek, Edgerly, and one or two other fields no salt has yet been actually penetrated. THE life of thermocouples is governed, to a large extent, by the protection they receive when in use; particularly when the temperatures being measured are high and the products of combustion are reducing in character. Several types of protection tubes are being used for this work; they are made of ordinary and aluminous porcelain, fused quartz, carborundum, fused alumina, fireclay, and some kinds of metal. All of them may render good service under certain conditions but they must be used for the purpose for which they are intended. For example, fused-quartz tubes are very good when excessive changes in temperature occur, but under certain conditions they will crystallize and lose their strength. Porcelain is used in several ways in connection with the use of thermocouples: for insulating the two wires of the couple and to. prevent short circuits; for protecting the entire couple in a refractory gas-tight tube, which is ordinarily fastened to and is considered part of a properly equipped thermocouple; and for protecting the complete thermocouple from the possibility of physical injury and to support it. This tube is made porous and strong and is ordinarily built right into the wall or crown of the furnace, as the case may be. The insulating tubes must be small and sufficiently refractory to withstand the temperatures at which they are to be used. The length of the tubes, porosity of the material from which they are made, etc. does not particularly matter. The tubes are sometimes made with two or even four holes, the latter being used where it is desirable to have two couples as close together as possible for calibration work. The thermocouple protection tube must be of proper size to permit the thermoelements and insulating tubes to be inserted or taken out easily. It must be porous enough to withstand sudden changes in temperature and yet gas-tight, as well as refractory enough to withstand the furnace temperature, even if the tube protrudes into the furnace in a horizontal position without support for a reasonable distance. Seven years ago, Dr. S. L. Hoytl presented a masterful discussion of the hard metal carbides and cemented tungsten carbide. His lecture summarized most of the data then available in the field; many of the details relating to the production, properties and structure of cemented tungsten carbide had never been previously published, for, in fact, this information was only then being acquired. During the intervening years, the cemented carbides have assumed a place of real importance in the commercial field, with an ever widening variety of applications due to constant improvement in the control of production technique and the unremitting search for new compositions that might better the performance of the alloys in one or another type of service. The most recent summary of production methods, properties and guides for the successful application of the cemented carbides appears in the 1936 edition of the Metals Handbook. Of necessity, much detailed information relating to structures and physical properties is not included in such a summary, and it is with such details that the present discussion is concerned. Steps in Preparation While the past 25 years have contributed a valuable store of working knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy, many of the process controls are derived entirely from experience and are not as yet finally explained by a specific physical or chemical phenomenon. For most of the cemented carbides such difficulties are aggravated by our lack of knowledge not only of the complex alloy systems involved, but also by the possible changes in structure and even in composition which may accompany variations in temperature, heating time, and furnace atmospheres. The principal steps in the preparation of these cemented carbide alloys are fairly well known, but to supply a foundation for discussion these steps are briefly outlined as follows : 1. All of the coals commonly used in domestic bituminous stokers form coke, and satisfactory operation depends upon the fact that the coke formed is so weakly bound together that it breaks readily in the normal operation of the stoker and automatically maintains a good fuel bed. Some coals, because of their tendency to form solid, blocky coke, are practically excluded from use in small domestic stokers as now built. Other coals, some among the best stoker coals available, can form this troublesome coke under certain conditions. Many contradictory methods have been offered as cures for coke formation. Generally the procedure has been to try various adjustments until a combination was found that seemed to give better results. Such random methods of treatment have not provided any reliable information as to causes. The present paper covers a comprehensive test program undertaken by the Koppers Company's Stoker Coal Research Laboratory at Kearny, N. J. The program had two main objectives; first, to discover what factors affected coke formation, and second; to define corrective steps that could be applied in stoker service work. Conclusions and Results i. The design of the stoker outweighs in importance all other factors capable of improving coke formation. 2. Insufficient air supply aggravates the formation of large blocky coke, although raising the air above 30 to 40 per cent excess (as determined during steady running) does not further improve the character of the coke formed and only reduces its accumulation at the expense of efficiency, increased fly ash, poorer clinker-ing, and other disadvantages. 3. Increasing the coal feed results in a somewhat more friable coke structure and is recommended for persistently troublesome jobs. 4. Increasing over-fire draft improves the character of the coke formed and reduces troublesome accumulations by accelerating off-period burning, although at some expense in efficiency and some increase in fly-ash accumulation. 5. Coke structure was not substantially improved by blocking some of 'the retort tuyeres, although the blocking of tuyeres at the feed-screw end of a rectangular retort did lead to somewhat improved performance, possibly because of considerably better distribution of coke in the fuel bed. 6. With the equipment tested no difference was shown between installation of the same stoker in a steam boiler and a warm-air furnace, or between a sand-filled and a ventilated type of hearth. 7. The following design features had no noticeable effect on coke formation: a. Presence or absence of coal-tube air as provided by many manufacturers to eliminate smoke-back. B. Presence or absence of a flap damper ill the air duct to minimize off-period burning. c. Continuous or intermittent (ratchet and pawl driven) movement of fuel feed screw.

Coke structure was not substantially improved by blocking some of 'the retort tuyeres, although the blocking of tuyeres at the feed-screw end of a rectangular retort did lead to somewhat improved performance, possibly because of considerably better distribution of coke in the fuel bed. 6. With the equipment tested no difference was shown between installation of the same stoker in a steam boiler and a warm-air furnace, or between a sand-filled and a ventilated type of hearth. 7. The following design features had no noticeable effect on coke formation: a. Presence or absence of coal-tube air as provided by many manufacturers to eliminate smoke-back. B. Presence or absence of a flap damper ill the air duct to minimize off-period burning. c. Continuous or intermittent (ratchet and pawl driven) movement of fuel feed screw.

Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric Pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temPerature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. Methods Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. SULPHUR has long been one of the banes of the steel manufacturer and often no effort and expense have been spared in order to reduce it to a small per cent. in the finished product. This condition is clue to a general conviction that in many cases where steels have failed in service, sulphur has been the cause. But there has been a growing feeling in recent years that the verdict against sulphur has been unnecessarily severe. In cases of segregation it was present in augmented amounts along with other impurities, but it had not caused the segregation. High sulphur in pig iron is caused by poor furnace conditions and the sulphur is merely one indication of an iron that has not been properly reduced. No amount of subsequent treatment under oxidizing conditions in the open-hearth furnace can remedy the defects, although the per cent. of sulphur may be considerably reduced. In other words, the causes of bad steel can frequently be traced back to bad pig iron, and sulphur is merely one indication that the pig iron is bad. The writer recently visited a steel plant where a mass of evidence had been accumulated which substantiated this fact, and the superintendent was .emphatic in stating that high sulphur was not harmful provided the steel was not otherwise poor due to insufficient reduction in the blast furnace. The presence of a moderate amount of sulphur is desirable from the standpoint of the man who machines the steel. The low-sulphur material drags and the production of a smooth surface is very difficult. A slight increase in sulphur enables the machinist to produce a smooth surface without difficulty. Since, therefore, such large quantities of steel are subjected to machining, it becomes highly important that the sulphur controversy should be settled, and if its presence is proved to be harmless the ban on it should be lifted.

THE literature on refractories, although fairly extensive, is so scattered through books and periodicals as to be difficult of access to the general reader and most of the individual papers serve merely to illuminate some particular phase of the industry. Two general treatises by American authors8.16 are available, also the somewhat older works by a well-known British authority, 12,13 but these make their appeal to the technically minded ceramic engineer. Another small group of publications deals with the use of refractories, mainly in the iron and steel industry.1, 3,5,6,11,15 Raw materials utilized by the refractories industry have been covered by sundry books and articles. For the relatively nontechnical reader and economist, however, there appears to be no single review that purports to describe the industry as a whole. Furnace linings and other products that are classed as "refractories" are designed primarily to withstand high temperatures but this important property is by no means the only requirement; a suitable refractory material must likewise withstand slagging (chemical' action), abrasion (physical wear), and spalling, as well as the various other stresses and physical phenomena induced by heat, of which softening or incipient melting is only one phase. Nevertheless, subject to these highly practical considerations, the definition of a refractory material is based upon temperature resistance. Broadly speaking, any material that shows obvious signs of fusion after being heated slowly to 1500°C (2732°F) cannot be classified as a refractory material. The characteristic properties and requirements of refractory materials are conveniently summarized in Fig 1, prepared on the American Refractories Institute Fellowship at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Most of the factors of service and properties of refractories given in this chart are interdependent and are greatly affected in degree by the functions of temperature and time. The factors in the chart are believed to cover the commoner questions.

Introduction IN order to realize the economies which would result in operating the mine pumps at the Chapin mine with electricity. generated by water power, the Oliver Iron Mining Co. recently installed a hydro-electric plant at the upper Quinnesee, falls on the Menominee river, and constructed a transmission line to the mine. On account of the large flow of water in the Chapin mine, and the great depth from which it has to be handled, it was necessary to make a thorough investigation of the merits of both the motor-driven centrifugal and motor-driven plunger pumps, in order that the most economical results as regards power, cost of installation, maintenance, and operation, be obtained. This investigation resulted in the selection of motor-driven centrifugal pumps, as the cost of the pumps and motors, installation, and maintenance was considerably lower, and the space required in the underground workings very much smaller, than for the plunger pumps. The overall efficiencies guaranteed by several of the centrifugal-pump manufacturers were so nearly those guaranteed by plunger-pump manufacturers that the saving in power which would result from the installation of plunger pumps did not justify their increased first cost and the increased cost of installation under the conditions prevailing at the Chapin nine. In order to substantiate the representations of the centrifugal-pump builders it was deemed necessary to insist upon a factory test of the completed units before shipment, the test to be conducted under conditions of head and capacity approximating as nearly as possible those under which the pumps would operate in service. Furthermore, it was considered necessary to demonstrate, by test, that there were no deficiencies in design or capacity of the pumps or motors before their final installation in the mine, as it would be extremely difficult to make alterations in the pumps or motors after they were installed.

During the war years of 1941 to 1945, maintenance of mine locomotives and other mine equipment took the form of rebuilding rather than of renewing. Purchase of new parts became increasingly difficult and mine operators found it necessary to maintain equipment by salvaging old parts. Mine-locomotive wheels, although not representing a high cost per pound of material, contain a considerable amount of steel and without rebuilding would have to be scrapped long before even a moderate percentage of the steel in the wheel is actually consumed. Many mine operators have been rebuilding locomotive wheels for several years with automatic open are-welding equipment. In 1927, the Pittsburgh Coal Co. started such a program, using a single Westinghouse automatic welding head. Since that time, many refinements have been added, until in 1944 the setup was operating very efficiently. A desire to increase wheel life and to hold down rising costs led the company in 1944 to investigate the possibilities of the under-flux are-welding process for wheel rebuilding, although at that time, little or no work had been done on multiple pass or "build-up" welding with the underflux arc. Work with this process had been confined largely to welding together flat plates in a "down hand" position. Possibilities for savings were intensified by the fact that the company has 300 locomotives in operation, using actively or as spares 1200 sets of wheels. During 1942 and 1943, about 500 sets of wheels were sent each year to the company's maintenance shop at Library, Pa., for rebuilding. Based on having 800 sets in service (many of the company's heavy locomotives have three sets of trucks), the average life of a set of wheels was approximately 19 months. Anything that could be done to increase wheel life promised sizable annual savings. Open Arc Welding With the open arc process, a set of wheels could be rebuilt for about 40 pet of the cost' of new wheels. Underflux arc welding gave promise of greatly increased welding speeds, more homogeneous, dense deposits and the chance for use of a wider range in welding-wire compositions. Against this was ranged the higher cost of materials and the cost of developing the process from the theory to a practical reality. Since 1927, when a single open arc head was placed in operation, fixed welding procedures had been gradually developed, a positioner for handling a set of wheels was built, and a second head was placed in operation in order to weld two wheels simultaneously. The fixture, or positioner, which was built to position and turn the wheels under the two welding heads, included a motor drive, controlled by a rheostat, which rotated the wheels through a double set of speed reducers and a removable jaw coupling attached to one end of the axle of the wheel truck.
