Epitomized, there have been no innovations recently in crushing, but in grinding the trend has been towards larger units under more automatic control with an increased use of autogenous grinding. Crushing Portability of primary crushers to "follow the face" reduces material handling costs. The top size of crusher feed still establishes the size of the crusher; the feed opening should be 1 1/2 times the size of the largest feed. The maximum size of crusher product is 1 ½ times the open scale setting of a jaw or gyratory crusher. Practice dictates use of scalping screens ahead of any type of crusher when the feed contains 25% or more of product size. If required capacity is under 600-700 tph economics favor a double toggle crusher or an impactor. For larger capacities the gyratory crusher is favored.

Location.—The principal manganese-deposits of the Department of Panama, Republic of Colombia, are located almost clue south of Viento Frio, a native village bordering on the Caribbean Sea, and about 45 miles northeast of Colon (Aspinwall). The mining-claims are the Viento Frio, the Carrano, the Nispero, and the Soledad. Each property is to the south of the preceding one in the order mentioned. The first one is about one mile from the coast, and the most southerly boundary of the Soledad is about five miles in a straight line from the same coast-line. I shall confine my remarks to the four properties mentioned and to La Guaca, west of the Carrano, because these are the only ones where mining has so far been done to more or less extent. Manganese has also been found, however, in the neighborhood of these deposits, and a large area adjoining them has been divided into sections and " denounced " as mining-claims. Since the very early work on quenched structures, where the products of the martensite transformation had been recognizedl this transformation has provoked much interest and study. Theoretically it was desirable to account for the extreme changes in physical properties resulting from the formation of martensite, as that information might lead to results of practical importance. Desirable information, therefore, was on the kinetics of transformation from austenite to martensite as well as on the physical constitution of the martensite. It has been known for years that certain steels quenched to room temperature will contain persistent austenite as well as martensite. Other important and now well-established features of the martensite reaction are the Progress of the reaction on cooling only and the independence of Ar" with cooling velocities exceeding the critical velocity. These facts have been experimentally determined by various methods and investigators. Notable among the early investigators were Tammann and Scheill and Wever and Engel.2 Unfor- tunately, all investigators did not fully interpret their results, which, coupled with several investigations that yielde. conflicting resultsl caused a state of confusion that was not clarified until quite recently. X-ray investigations of martensite in steels3-6 indicate it to be a supersaturated solid solution of carbon in alpha iron. This supersaturation is evident from the appearance of a body-centered tetragonal structure with the addition of sufficient carbon. The dimensions of this tetragonal structure are a linear function of the carbon content within the limits of accuracy of the determinations. Slight tempering of tetragonal martensite leads to the destructi,, of the tetragonal structure, which is converted to a body-centered cubic strutture. This phenomenon has precipitated a controversy concerning the nature and mechanism of the tempering of martensite The facts in the case have been outlined by Epstein7 and more recently by Antia, Fletcher, and Cohen.8 The significance of Ar" on theoretical grounds is not clear, however, although considerable study has been devoted to its determination. The precise position of Art' aS a function of carbon content was first stated by Greninger and Troiano9 for steels covering a range of approximately 0.7 to 1.8 per cent carbon. The effect of alloying elements on Ar" has recently been the subject matter of investigation by various methods.

The rate of formation of the intermetallic compound, indium antimonide, at the interface between iudium and antimony at 100°C is greatly increased when a composite electrode of indium electrode -posited on antimony is made the cathode in an electrolytic cell. The amount of indium antimonide formed during electrolytic treatment at constant potential appeared to he proportional to the square root of time, but the scatter of the data, particularly at long times, makes it impossible to state this conclzlsi1:ely. The rate constant for the electrochemical synthesis was estimated to he 1.5 x 10-12 sq cm per sec. A similar- set of experiments was conducted in the absence of an applied potential but under otherwise similar conditions. The rate constant lor the thermal synthesis was less than 2 x 10-14 sq cm per, sec, at least two orders of magnitude less than obtained during electrolytic treatment. In a series of electrochemical studies it was observed that intermetallic compounds formed on the surface of polarized electrodes.1'2 The possibility of using this technique for the electrochemical preparation of intermetallic compounds was investigated and subsequently applied to the synthesis of the semiconducting III-V compounds. Gallium antimonide, indium arsenide. indium antimonide, and indium bismuthide were successfully formed by electrodepositing the Group III element from a boiling acid solution onto an electrode made of the Group V element. The following kinetic studies were undertaken on indium antimonide to obtain quantitative information on the rate of formation of this representative III-V compound under a potential gradient. EXPERIMENTAL The electrolytic cell for these experiments was a modified, three-neck, round-bottom, 500-ml distillation flask. Sealed into the side of the flask was a Luggin probe which monitored the surface of the working electrode and extended out of the flask to a small reservoir containing a saturated calomel electrode. The counter electrode was platinum. The three electrodes were connected to a Wenking po-tentiostat which maintained a preselected constant potential near the surface of the working electrode with reference to a saturated calomel electrode. All potentials noted in this paper are with reference to a saturated calomel electrode at 45° ± 5°C. The potential and the current were both monitored using Sargent Model MR recorders. The antimony electrodes were cast in graphite molds to form spheres about 15 mm in diameter with a shank 6 mm in diameter and 10 mm long. A heavy copper wire (12B & S gage) was soldered to this shank. Collodion was applied for protection to the shank and the connecting part of the copper lead. A snug-fitting O-ring was slipped over the shank and the electrode was then fitted into a teflon holder such that only the spherical portion was exposed. The electrode surfaces were cleaned and chemically polished prior to assembly and introduction into the electrolyte by etching in a modified CP-4 solution (50 parts glacial acetic acid, 10 parts concentrated nitric acid, 2 parts 48 pct hydrofluoric acid). The electrolyte was 10-2 M In+3 in 1 MH2So4 and its temperature was held constant by refluxing. The reflux condenser was open to the atmosphere and no temperature correction was made for changes in barometric pressure. The indium concentration in the electrolyte was checked from time to time by the analytical method outlined below for the determination of the amount of indium antimonide formed electrochemically. A schematic of the recorded potential is shown in Fig. 1. At point A the antimony electrode was introduced into the cell and the open-circuit potential recorded. At point B the potentiostat, preset at the desired potential, was switched on. It was switched off at point C and the potential fell to the open-circuit value of the electrodeposited indium. The

No attempt was made to dif-ferentiate between the various machines as installed on different dredges. The Natomas Company use a jig of their own manufacture. The Yuba Company installed the Placer jig as manufactured by the Pan American Engineer-ing Company. "The Pan American Engineering Company also manufactures the Crangle jig under their own name. This is a diaphragm jig in which the pulsations are produced by intermittent flow of water through the patent Crangle Valve and it has no driving mechanism."

In conducting a pressure build-up test on an oil well, it is often necessary to shut-in the well for a short time prior to initiation of the test. The effect of such a short tern shut-in on the resulting pressure build-up curve is derived. The derivation is based on the Kelvin point-source solution and is a straight forward extension of the fundarnental theory. The magnitude of the effect is evaluatecl and illustrated by an example. It is shown that if the production subsequent to the short term shut-in is at least 10 times the duration of the shrct-in, the effect will he less than 10 per cent. INTRODUCTION It often happens that before a pressure build-up test can be made an additional valve must be mounted on the wellhead, or on arrival at the well, it might be learned that the well had been shut-in several hours the previous day because of a shortage of tankage. In such cases the question is How will such an interruption of production affect the results of a pressure buildup test This work explains how to take account of such a short term shut-in in order that the test can proceed without further delay. The solution presented here makes use of the Kelvin point-source solution used by Horne1 in his treatment of the pressure build-up in wells. Use is also made of the super-position theorem. MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION The well is assumed to have been in production at a constant rate for a relatively long time (several days or more). It is then shut-in for a short time, after which it is again placed in production at the previous constant rate. It continues to produce at this rate until shut-in for a pressure build-up test. The Kelvin point-source solution is expressed by Eq. 1. The sequence of production rates is listed in Table I. As part of a program to establish the effect of crystal imperfections on laser output, a detailed study was made of the dislocation structure of ruby crystals obtained from varioius sources. Using KHSO4 as an etchant, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure on the (0001) and the (1150) planes was carried out. A less extensive study was made of the rhombohedral planes. The average dislocation density on the basal plane was 1.5 to 3 x 106 cm&apos;2 and on the (1120) planes -5 x 10&apos; cm-2. Howe7!er, considerable variation existed between areas on a given plane. The subboundaries in the basal plane tended to lie along [1100] type directions while those on the (1120) plane tended to lie: a) parallel to the basal plane, b) along truces of the (1101) plane, and c) along normals to the traces of the (0001) planes. The orientations suggest that mang of the dislocations lie on the (0001), (1701), and (1150) planes A Laue back-rellection nnalysis Of c-axis wander in one crystal revealed a gradual increase in misorientation from me end of the crystal to the other, with a maximum variation of 1°35&apos;. Slight etching of a mechanically polished crystal revealed mumerous polishing scratches, suggesting the existence of a plastic flow layer. It is recognized that chromium concentration, lineage, and other crystalline imperfections play a role in the efficiency of ruby lasers.&apos; Consequently, it is desirable to establish in detail the imperfection structure of ruby crystals to be used as lasers. Some exploratory work along this line had already been done by Barnes&apos; and Dils and Martin.&apos;" How- referred to as the morphological system, as described by Kronberg.4 The Miller indices given in the present paper will be based on this morphological system. In this system, the three common growth planes are the (0001), the {1120}, and the {1101}.5 Since these planes are of high stability, it is expected that they are most suitable for study by the etch-pit technique. In the present investigation, a detailed mapping of the dislocation structure was carried out for the (0001) and the (1130) planes. A less extensive study was made of the etch-pit structure on rhombohedra1 planes. An analysis of dislocations in sapphire (the ruby host) was first made by kronberg,4 who postulated that slip on the (0001) plane occurred by motion of dislocations with Burgers vector 1/3 <1150> and that these dislocations might dissociate into quarter partials. An etch-pit technique using boiling phosphoric acid was developed by Scheuplein and Gibbs6, 7 for identifying dislocations intersecting the (0001) planes and the planes near (2021) in sapphire. Al-ford and Stephens8 were able to reveal dislocations on the (0001) and {1120} planes in sapphire and ruby by etching in fused potassium bisulfate (KHS04) at 675°C. The termini of basal dislocations [(000l), <1120>] were revealed by Palmour and Kriegel9 on {1120} and {1010} by thermally etching sapphire. Bond and Harvey10 were able to decorate dislocations in sapphire by adding 1 pet by weight of ZrO2 to the Al2O3 powder used in the growth of the crystals by the Verneuil technique and then heating the grown crystals for 4 hr at 1500°C. They found, using optical transmission microscopy, that many dislocations had straight segments which were parallel to one of the six [1120] directions in the basal plane. Single dislocation lines curved smoothly from one alignment to the other, turning through angles of 60 to 120 deg. Also observed were isolated hexagonal loops, approximately 10 µ in diameter, the sides of which lay along the same directions as did the longer dislocations. MATERIAL AND ETCHING PROCEDURE The ruby specimens used in this study (all containing approximately 0.04 pet Cr) had been obtained from four different sources: Linde Co., Meller Co., Valpey Crystal Corp., and those grown at Aerospace Corp.* For the initial phase of this study, several specimens were cut from the slab shown schematically in Fig. 1 which had previously been cut from a disk boule obtained from the Linde

Up to the present time few attempts have been made to produce hard nonmagnetic materials by heat treatment of austenitic steels. The usual result has been to cause them to pass into the martensitic stage, thus destroying to a great extent the typical austenitic properties, since this involves a transition of a portion of the iron from a face-centered to a body-centered type of atomic arrangement. High-strength nonmagnetic materials such as might be provided by properly hardening austenite are required in the electrical industry for different machine parts. In Europe nonmagnetic retainer rings for restraining the end-turns of the rotor windings in turbo-alternators have been developed as a special application of high-strength austenite. In testing1 a 28,000-kva. three-phase Siemens turbo generator running at 3000 r.p.m. at full load current, the losses in the short-circuit test were 450 kw. for the magnetic ring and 286 kw. for the nonmagnetic, and the difference should be attributable to the magnetic ring. The differences in temperatures during the same test are given in Table 1 and these show the advantage of a nonmagnetic over a magnetic retainer ring.

APRIL 10-Officially, spring comes to the Great Lakes on March 21 as it does elsewhere in the country but in the Superior district continued snow and freezing until late in March have caused citizens in Duluth to place their bets on April 15 for the first ore vessels if the ice breakup is left to Mother Nature. North and west of Duluth and near the eastern end of the Mesabilies the little town of Aurora, population 1100. As the little v-nosed snowplow, pride of the community, shuttled back and forth clearing Aurora&apos;s few sidewalks, the crowd in Bradich&apos;s Cafe were more interested in the impending high school state championship basketball tournament in Minneapolis than in the outcome of Erie Mining Company&apos;s petition for water rights for their proposed 10 million ton taconite concentrating plant. Such a plant would employ 4500 workmen, and at the prevailing ratio of 10 people for every mine worker in Minnesota, this would mean a 45,000 increase in population for Aurora and the vicinity in the next few years. Downstate fishermen are alarmed at the flurry of activity by the mining companies in pushing plans for large scale recovery of iron from taconite. Inconvenience to these gentlemen will be inconsequential when compared with the vast increase in payrolls for range communities. Oliver is pushing the construction of a fine ore agglomeration plant at Virginia which will give them valuable experience for projected taconite processing. Oglebay, Norton & Co. is ready to go at Beaver Bay, north of Duluth, as the right of way for a railroad from Babitt to Beaver Bay is secured as well as permission to dispose of tailing into Lake Superior at the site of the proposed concentrating plant. This company is also doing research in agglomeration at Ashland, Ky., in cooperation with other interests. The financing is yet to be worked out. Of the four possibilities for agglomerating taconite concentrate-sintering, pellitizing, nodulizing and briquetting-the prospects for pelletizing appear the most favorable., It seems likely that 60 cents per ton can be saved by this process over sintering because only 1 to 2 pct of coal is required as compared with 7 pct for sintering. One reason for the lower coal consumption is that the chemical transition of magnetite to hematite which transpires in the pelletizing process is exothermic.

Conneaut has a long and illustrious history as a major Great Lakes port for coal and iron ore. The first dock was built in 1892 for unloading iron ore from the Mesabi Range for shipment to the Pittsburgh steel mills via the Shenango & Lake Erie Railroad, later to become the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company was incorporated in 1893. The world&apos;s first Hulett automatic ore unloader was constructed at Conneaut in 1899. Steam operated, it was the model for the giant electric Huletts used today, named after its inventor, George Hulett, who was a Conneaut resident.

An investigation was conducted on fine grained airon wire to measure the influence of the temperature of deformation on strain aging near room temperature. Specimens were deformed various amounts at 77°, 195°, or 273°K and aged. The strain aging was followed by either internal friction or return of the yield-point measurements. The results show that strain aging occurs in three stages. During the first stage there is small, almost immediate return of the yield point. The solute carbon concentration, as mesured by internal friction, remains constant in stage I but is lower than the concentration in the unstrained condition. In the second stage, the solute concentration decreases while the magnitude of the yield point increases. In the third stage, the solute atoms continue to drain from the solution, the yield point approaches a maximum, and the strain-hardening coefficient and flow curve increase. The kinetics of the strain aging reaction are not the same for the two sets of measurements since the internal friction results lag behind the yield-point measurements. However, the strain-aging kinetics measured at 44° and 64°C showed no effect due to the difference in initial deformation temperature; nor were the strain aging kinetics influenced by low-temperature anneals at 77°, 195°, and 273°K. 1 HE object of this investigation was to measure the effect of initial deformation temperature on the strain aging of a-iron by tensile tests (i.e., return of the yield point) and internal friction methods, to correlate the results of the two measuring methods, and to measure the effect of low-temperature annealing (<273°K) after low-temperature deformation upon strain aging. The experiments were performed on fine-grained a-iron wire containing 0.02 wt pct c.l According to Thomas and Leak,&apos; return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solid solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of the aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,3 during aging the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point on subsequent testing. It has been shown that after low-temperature neutron bombardment, a-iron goes through a stage of recovery at low temperatures which can be attributed to the annealing of iron interstitials&apos; and/or vacancies.4 If, after low-temperature deformation, there is an interaction during a low-temperature anneal between mobile point defects and the solute atoms (i.e., carbon atom interaction with vacancy or iron interstitial), it is possible that some solute atoms will be found at defect sites other than dislocations. Such changes in the sinks for the carbon atoms might be expected to alter the strain-aging kinetics sufficiently to be detected by either inter-

The Bureau of Mines, US Department of the Interior, conducted studies to recover phosphate from four dolomitic southern Florida deposits not currently mined. The samples contained 5.8-10.2% P205 and 1.7-4.8% MgO. Chemical analyses of sized fractions indicated that no pebble concentrate, +1.2 mm (+14 mesh) could be produced from these samples. A scheme was developed that consisted of desliming, grinding, scrubbing, and redesliming the ore to produce a flotation feed. Conventional one-step fatty acid fuel oil batch flotation tests on the samples resulted in concentrates containing 29.0-31.3% P205 at flotation recoveries ranging from 72.4 to 96.1% of the flotation feed. The MgO content of the concentrates ranged from 0.47 to 1.36%. Continuous flotation of the Manatee No. 2 sample indicated that commercial-grade phosphate concentrates analyzing 31.3% P205 and 0.55% MgO could be produced with a flotation recovery of 89.9%. The MgO content of concentrates obtained from the Manatee No. 1 and Hardee samples was 1.20 -1.36 %, respectively. Leaching with aqueous SO2 reduced the MgO content of these phosphate concentrates to 0.5 and 0.8%, but with a concomitant loss in phosphate recovery of about 10%.

FOR many years the mining of coal and other minerals occurring in sedimentary formation has been planned according to information obtained by diamond drilling. Placer mines have used churn drills for sampling and estimating deposits, and some metal mines have used the method either wholly or in part. The diamond drill method, therefore, although not entirely new, has come into more prominence in the last few years. Several large-scale developments now being planned or in the production stage have used this method in varying degree. This paper will describe the operations of the Howe Sound Exploration Co., Ltd. at Snow Lake, Manitoba, where a gold mine was developed and equipped for mining and milling wholly on the basis of diamond drilling results. The property has been in operation nearly 3 years, so that results can be compared with the estimates and assumptions made from the diamond drilling. In developing the subject it is necessary to outline as briefly as possible the normal method of mining, from discovery to production stage. Table I sets forth these various stages, the methods of financing, the percentage of total cost, and the relative time interval required for each section of the work. The plan presented in this table cannot be applied to all mining developments, but it gives a basis on which to work. In Stages 2 and 3 the investment is moderate, and if the property does not respond favorably the options or interests can be terminated. Stage 4 represents a sizeable investment, and it is more difficult to drop the property after this part of the operation is completed. Stages 2, 3, and 4 may be repeated several times by diflerent groups or companies before Stage 5 is reached, but when Stage 5 has been started the total capital investment must be provided and there can be no turning back. It will be noted that there is a total of 116 units of investment in the overall cost if one company proceeds with Stages 2, 3, 4, and 5 in order. Stage 4, however, consumes time which is important when markets are being considered. Bringing a property into production when metal prices are low is much more difficult than when the prices are high, and if this stage can be set aside production is attained more quickly. When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services. Stage 4 must of necessity be governed by expenditures, and a great many temporary services, including housing and power plants, must be provided. The prospect shaft is a small one, and drifts,

When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services. AT the Steptoe metallurgical plant, where ore of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is beneficiated, a small copper-leaching annex has been in operation treating flue dust from roasting-furnace dust chambers, together with a siliceous oxidized ore. This leaching plant was designed to obviate smelting low-grade siliceous flue dust, which interfered with the operation of the reverberatories by forming a blanket on the charge The major portion of the copper content of the flue dust accumulating in the upper chambers of the. roaster flue, and at the stack, is water soluble, and also contains much free sulphuric acid and soluble sulphate It was found that sufficient acid could be obtained by mixing this material with water to provide a lixiviant for leaching the siliceous copper o mentioned. This was the sole source of the lixiviant used in the operatic to be described. An analysis of the flue dust showed it to be composed as follows: Per Cent. WHEN the white pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries advanced from the coastal settlements of southern Africa into the interior of the subcontinent, they found it inhabited, more or less sparsely, by brown or black peoples mainly of pastoral habits but equipped with a fighting spirit and certain fighting weapons. Some of the tribes were smiths, others were miners and metallurgists; all used fuel, either industrially or domestically. Some of that fuel was wood, some cattle dung, and in some places the natives mined outcrop coal. Coal was first discovered by Europeans in Natal about 1840. After proper deliberation and after allowing due time for a consideration of all the implications, the Natal Government decided in 1881 (40 years after) to import an English expert to investigate and report on the discovery. Things then moved rapidly, and in what to a geologist is the remarkably short space of eight years, Natal collieries were producing at the rate of nearly 30,000 long tons per annum or 100 long tons per working day!

The interior of West Australia is an arid table-land, elevated 1400 feet above the sea. This plateau is flanked to the south by the Tertiary limestones which fringe the Great Australian Bight. It is bordered northward by the Carboniferous beds of the Fitzroy river and westward by the granite of the Darling hills, while to the cast this wide area, about 900 miles square, slopes downward imperceptibly into an undulating plain of sand, which stretches with dismal persistence across the boundary of South Australia. The waters of the ocean receded from this tract of land long ago; it is probably the oldest landsurface on the globe, and represents the basal wreck of a much larger continent. Fig. 1 is a map of this region. The Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie gold-fields are situated in the southwestern part of the region. The rock-formation consists of granite penetrated by diorites and andesites. The latter are occasionally associated with tuff&apos;s, which have been readily mistaken for sedimentaries. There are no fossil-bearing rocks, such as would afford a datum-line from which to measure the relative geological age of the prevailing formation. On the extreme edges of the mining territory there are, it is true, remnants of sand-rock which are considered identical with the " Desert Sandstone " of Queensland, determined by Daintree to be of Mesozoic age. But even this formation has evidently been laid down so long subsequent to the underlying rocks that it serves merely to emphasize their much greater antiquity. In their characteristics and in their relations to each other, the granite and the diorite of the Coolgardie region appear to me much to resemble the Laurentian granite and the Huronian

&apos;This paper discusses a method and apparatus for determining the dip of formations traversed by a drill hole, by means of electrical measurements in the hole. The process consists in recording the Spontaneous Potentials present along three oriented generatrices in the hole. By comparison of the three curves thus obtained, after application of a correction factor to compensate for any deviations of the hole, the dip angle and the dip direction are determined. Excellent accuracy is obtained for dip angles over 10°. Because the method is simp1e and the apparatus rugged, the measurements are rapid and reliable; consequently, they can be made at all the levels that are of interest at any time after the well has been drilled. Mechanical cores are not needed to evaluate the dips. A convenient, time-saving procedure is to perform the dipmeter survey at the time the electrical log is taken, using for both operations the same cable and truck. Actual examples of results obtained in wells of the Gulf Coast area are given. Introduction The problem of determining the angle and direction of the dip of the strata traversed by a drill hole has practical interest, and sometimes vital importance, which need not be emphasized to the oil industry. The need for that type of information has existed ever since wells have been drilled. Certainly it has not subsided, in spite of the numerous inventions and improvements made in other fields of the art of drill-hole exploration. The few examples given in this paper are but illustrative of this fact. In the past, methods have been devised, and used, to solve this problem, but generally they have met with limited success, possibly because they failed more or less to answer the requirements of a modern age for fast yet accurate measurements. If accurate, the results were obtained at the cost of very tedious and lengthy operations. The new S. P.* dipmeter service offered to the oil industry is the result of exhaustive and in this particular field. In 1032 a dipmeter and electromagnetic teleclinom-eter service was made available. The apparatus employed then was of a rather delicate and costly construction, and the measurements had to be made with precautions sometimes difficult to secure on the rig. Although the information given by the electromagnetic dipmeter was limited to the direction of the dip, very interesting results were obtained in California, Trinidad, Venezuela, Rumania and, most notably, in the Netherlands East Indies.+ Apparatus The S. P. dipmeter surveys present none of the drawbacks mentioned above. The apparatus is rugged and free from constructional complications, therefore well adapted to field use. This, combined with the new, basically simple approach to the problem, explains the rapidity of execution of the measurements. The results are remarkably accurate and they are complete, giving the
