This paper presents three general approaches towards the solution of the stress distribution and the behavior of tubular connections as used in offshore well drilling structures. First, the possibilities of using plastic models and photoelasticity techniques in evaluating the stress distribution in gusset plate connections are analyzed. The results of photoelastic studies on the stress distribution in the in-plane gusset plate of two-dimensional joints are presented. The influence of the configuration of the gusset plate (with and without cut-outs) is discussed. Second, the paper deals with recent developments and applications of computer programs to analyze connections with directly inter-welded tubes and with gusset plates. The possibilities and limitations of these programs are discussed. Stress patterns analyzed with these programs are presented for different joint configurations. Finally, the basic test procedures and results of a test on a tubular joint under static and alternating loads are discussed. INTRODUCTION The effective design of tubular connections as encountered in offshore well drilling towers or floating platforms has been complicated basically by the radial flexibility of the tube walls. This flexibility is a source of severe stress concentrations which can initiate an early failure of these joints. In an attempt to reduce the influence of the wall flexibility of the column tube, certain joints are presently designed by inter-welding the incoming branch members. In those designs, the force acting normal to the chord tube can be reduced considerably. A second group of joints incorporate gusset plates or stiffening rings to stiffen the column wall and to distribute the incoming branch member forces over a larger part of this wall. A third approach to improve the stress distribution in a tubular joint is to increase the wall thickness of the column member. This can be achieved by simply applying a thicker wall section in the vicinity of the joint. A fourth possibility to restrain the radial flexibility of the tube wall is to fill the column member with concrete. Also, a single, cast steel seat welded to the column tube can be used to improve the stress distribution in this wall. Although all these designs improve, in general, the state of stress in the column wall, the altered stiffness often causes the development of critically stressed areas in the web members. At the same time the actual design in most instances is decisively influenced by the site which governs the depth and controls the forces produced by waves, earthquakes and ice flow. Also, the towing, erection and foundation requirements of offshore structures can affect the actual design selection. Because of the complexity of the structural configuration of tubular joints, the stress analysis of these connections has necessarily been based on simplified and often crude assumptions. For the earlier and smaller type of connections with about 4-ft diameter column sections, the primary problem was to evaluate the relative stiffness of the column wall section and the load transfer between joint members. Due to the recent developments of offshore drilling structures with increasingly larger connections (e.g., column diameter. 32 ft; web members, 8.5 ft) this problem has become even more critical. One design philosophy for such large joints follows a member-to-member connection with radially heavy reinforced column sections. This radial stiffness can be attained by closely spaced and intensively stiffened horizontal diaphrams together with vertical stiffeners. A second solution incorporates a concrete-filled section between the outer and inner walls of the column tube. Another philosophy considers large gusset-plated joints. The problem in these joints is to develop an effective load transfer between the branch tubes and the gusset plate and to minimize the stress concentrations in the member walls as effectively as possible. Several concepts are followed to achieve this gradual transfer between web-member walls and gusset plates. Because the number of joints in these huge platforms is limited compared to the over-all size, a proper design of these joints is even more important than was the case for the many joints in the smaller, but multi-legged towers. A failure of one of those ultra-large joints could well cause the complete collapse of such a structure. Under these circumstances an accurate analysis of the large joints is of the greatest importance, together with information regarding the expected behavior of such joints under critical alternating load conditions. Recent applications of photoelastic model techniques have proved to be quite effective in evaluating the elastic behavior of such joints. Although a complete study of such connections is quite well possible with present-day photoelastic techniques, it might often be feasible and necessary to limit the objectives and to restrict these investigations to the study of a specific aspect of the joint. Another very promising avenue of approach to solve the complex stress pattern in these connections seems to be the recent development of digital computer programs. A new approach to an old problem has made it possible to do in a a tively short period what has not been accomplished in the past three quarters of a century using strictly experimental methods. A theoretical study was made of the underlying principles whereby a jet is formed by a shaped charge and of the mechanism of the penetration of the target by that jet. It was found that there are more than 10, and perhaps as many as 15 variables affectin!? the performance of the shaped charge. Only a few calculations are necessary to show that it is physically impossible to investigate all of these variables experimentally. The shaped charge theory has been extended to include a previously little-understood mechanism in high explosive phenomena; namely, low order detonation. By superimposing a high order detonation on a zone already undergoing low order detonation, all appreciable improvement in performance is accomplished. The development of a design wherehy these phenomena are coordinated in such a way as to develop a jet which is tailored to meet the specific target requirement will be described in detail. The shortcomings or even impossibility of strictly experimental techniques will be illustrated by a discussion of the development of a special-purpose explosive charge. INTRODUCTION In an article appearing in the May, 1888 issue of Scribner's Magazine, Charles E. Monroe described his early experiments with gun cotton (Fig. 1) which led to his name being most fre-quently connected with our present-day shaped charge. Although the sunken letters or "cavities" in Mon- roe's gun cotton were not lined, they produced some penetration of an iron plate. The credit for the lined shaped charge, however, should rightfully go to Dr. R. W. Wood of the Physics Dept. of Johns Hopkins University, who was responsible for first discovering the fact that a metal liner in a cavity of explosive gave high velocity fragments and/or jets of metal. This discovery was made by Dr. Wood inadvertently while investigating an accidental death resulting from an electric blasting cap. ROLE OF GASES IN FERROUS -METALLURGICAL PROCESSES IN every process for making steel there are one or more stages where the metal is exposed to gas of one kind or another. Thus, in the open-hearth furnace, the carbon dioxide and water vapor in the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the ferrous and manganous oxides in the slag, tending to convert these to higher oxides; the higher oxides then oxidize the steel, so that indirectly the products of combustion are oxidizing toward the steel. In the Bessemer process, there is direct contact of air and steel; also, the water vapor in the air blown into the converter is continually decomposed by the molten steel, yielding hydrogen and ferrous oxide, both of which are in part taken up by the metal. In the electric-furnace processes, there is always more or less air in contact with the slag covering the metal, and this air and the gaseous reaction products from it are dissolved in the slag to some extent and thus transmitted in part to the steel. In the crucible processes, there is always entrapped air in the charges and the crucibles are more or less permeable to the gaseous products of combustion from the furnace. In all the processes of manufacture, the molten metal is exposed to air while tapping into ladles and ingot molds and has an opportunity to saturate itself with air or with gaseous or solid products generated by chemical reactions between air and steel. Sieverts1 has shown that molten metals require but a few seconds to saturate themselves with a surrounding gas. No one familiar with the operations at a steel plant needs to be reminded of the important role that gases play at all stages. (written discussion ?).-This paper is a real contribution to technical science; it will make it' easier to think accurately about the inner workings of a blast furnace. I was rather surprised to read that the authors regarded as a new discovery the idea that a molten mixture of CaO, A1203, and Si02 is a molten solution of the compounds of these oxides rather than of the oxides in each other. Surely no. chemist with an active respect for the known facts of chemical affinity could believe that these oxides could be melted together without forming compounds, and that these compounds would then dissolve in one another. This work does, however, help to establish what it was supposed must be true. I think it is worth while, in the light of the work of the Geophysics Laboratory, this work of the Bureau of Mines, and that of previous investigators, to visualize what happens as a charge passes down through a blast furnace, thinking especially of the slag-forming materials. These are chiefly kaolin (Al203.2SiO2.2H2O), quartz, and limestone. These substances do not undergo much change until the limestone decomposes at about the middle of the furnace, whereupon the chemical affinities of CaO and SiO2 must begin to he active; especially if there is any amorphous Si02 present. This forms CaSiO3, and the SiO2, CaSi02 and Al2-032SiO2 then come together to form the binary and ternary eutectics so well located by the work of the Geophysics Laboratory. No matter how much lime has been charged into the furnace, the formation of this eutectic will start it about the same height in the furnace and the gangue will start to get pasty at the same height. In a recent paper read before the Institute on this subject, Mr. G. C. Stone advances the theory that the precipitate obtained in Williams's volumetric process,* by treating the boiling nitric acid solution of a manganese salt with potassic chlorate., is not pure MnO2, but approximates more closely to the composition 10Mn02+Mn0. As the value of the process and the accuracy of our results mould depend on whether this was the fact or not, it has seemed to me, and to my associates, Messrs. Beebe and Colly, that it would be of importance to ascertain the composition of this precipitate, and to that end the following series of experiments has been undertaken. These experiments have all been based on the considerations: 1. That potassic permanganate has an oxidizing power equivalent to five atoms of oxygen for every two of manganese : K2Mn2O8 = K2O.2MnO.O5. 2. That the same amount of manganese in the state of binoxide has an oxidizing power equivalent to two atoms of oxygen : 2MnO2 = 2MnO.O2. If, then, we take a solution of permanganate of unknown strength, and reduce it to binoxide, the oxidizing power of the binoxide formed will be equal to that of two-fifths the quantity of the permanganate solution originally taken. While, if the precipitate obtained should not be binoxide, but an indefinite or definite mixture of bin- and mon- oxides, then, from its equivalent oxidizing power, we can calculate its composition. The analyses were conducted in the following manner. The amount of permanganate taken was decomposed with hydrochloric acid, and concentrated to expel the excess of water. Sufficient excess of nitric acid was now added, and the solution was boiled until all the hydrochloric acid was destroyed. A considerable amount of work has been reported in the literature in regard to the texture and earing behavior of copper strip. The rolling texture of copper has been confirmed as (110) [112] and (112) [111], which yields ears of a drawn cup at the position 45" from the rolling direction.1-3 The recrystallization texture has been established as the cubic or (100) [001] texture, where the earing positions are at 0" and 90" to the rolling direction.4-8 It has also been reported that in the development of cubically aligned grains of copper strips, the percentage of this cubic texture increased with an increase of final reduction and final annealing temperature.8,9 A comprehensive study on H.C. copper (British commercial copper of high-conductivity quality = Cu 99.95 pct, O2 0.03 pct, Ag 0.003 pct, Fe 0.005 pct and Pb < 0.001 pct) was made by Cook and Richards.6 They concluded that the recrystallization textures could be described as one or more of the following textures: (1) a single texture (100) 10011, (2) a twin texture (110) [112] and (3) a random orientation, depending upon the previous history of the specimen concerned. The effect of various alloying additions in copper was reported by Dahl and Pawlek.10 They found that certain alloying additions, such as 5 pct Zn, 1 pct Sn, 4 pct Al, 0.5 pct Be, 0.5 pct Cd, or 0.05 pct P suppressed the formation of cubic texture. Brick, Martin and Angierll reported that the cold rolled textures due to various additions fitted a rather simple pattern. However, the recrystallization textures were subject to very considerable variations. In the discussion of this paper, Baldwin stated that deoxidized copper containing 0.02 pct P gave a complicated recrystallization texture at lower temperature. When this copper was annealed at high temperature, a single texture appeared which was described as (110) [ill] but. according to a pri- vate communication from Baldwin, this orientation reported was in error and should have been reported as (110)[112]. He also reported that the earing positions of drawn cups were at 60" to the rolling direction.12 Recently, Howald, in his discussion on the paper by Hibbard and Yen,13 reported that the rolling texture of phosphorus deoxidized copper, containing from 0.006 to 0.020 pct phosphorus, was of the pure copper type. When these coppers were annealed at lower temperatures, they exhibited a random orientation, and when they were annealed at higher temperatures they had a mixed (111)[110] and (100)[001] texture, depending on the severity of the final reduction and annealing temperature. However, the specific influence of phosphorus and other impurities on the recrystallization textures and the deep drawing properties of copper strip has not been thoroughly reported. Therefore, an attempt has been made in the present work to determine the rolling and recrystallization textures and also the earing behavior of five types of commercial copper and thereby to evaluate the effect of phosphorus and some other significant impurities on the development of texture for cold reductions of about 87 to 89 pct. Materials Used The five types of copper employed in the present investigation were two phosphorus deoxidized coppers of different phosphorus content (0.007 and 0.013 pct P), an oxygen-free copper (OFHC), an electrolytic tough-pitch copper, and a fire-refined tough-pitch copper. These materials were subjected to a thorough spectroscopic and chemical analysis. The designations and the chemical compositions were as shown in Table 1. The coppers, FA1, FA2 and FA3. were hot-forged from 3-in. billets into a ½ X 6-in. plate and cold rolled to the ready-to-finish gauge indicated below. FA4 and FA5 were hot rolled and scalped to ready-to-finish gauge. The grain size of all the materials in the ready-to-finish condition was about 0.030 to 0.045 mm. Table 2 shows the last stage of the production schedule for each copper strip used. Experimental Procedure ANNEALING, GRAIN SIZE AND HARDNESS DETERMINATIONS Specimens of each type of copper were finally annealed in air for periods of one hour at temperatures ranging from 300 to 1600°F and were subsequently cooled in air. The average grain diameter of the annealed specimen was estimated by comparing with a standard grain size chart. Hardness was determined on the Rockwell 15 T scale. CUPPING TESTS Cups were made in a blanking and drawing set, in which blanks of 2-in. diam were drawn to a cup of 1.25-in. diam with an average depth of about 0.75 in. The clearance between the punch and die was about 0.032 in. The ears of the cup were measured with a special fixture which read the height of ears to one-thousandth of an inch on every ten-degree interval along the circumference of the cup. POLE FIGURES The usual transmission diffraction method with unfiltered copper radiation was employed to determine the pole-figures of the specimens cold-rolled or annealed at 900°F. ALTHOUGH pig iron from iron ore and red cedar charcoal preceded the mining of coal by many years, for tradition says that Alabama iron was used to shoe the horses of Andrew Jackson&apos;s soldiers, coal was not produced until 1830. In that year, coal was mined in Tuscaloosa County, in the vicinity of what is now the University of Alabama, and shipped on flat boats (obviously during the wet season, for there were many shoals) down the Warrior River to Mobile. About that time, the first railroad, the Decatur & Tecumseh, was being constructed in northern Alabama to overcome the obstructions to freight traffic caused by the now well-known Muscle Shoals in the Tennessee River. This railroad was patterned after a railroad at Mauch Chunk, Pa., which was used for hauling anthracite from the Panther Creek valley. The Alabama railroad, which required about four years to complete, was 46 miles long and was used solely for the transportation of cotton. Although it was a failure, it demonstrated the practicability of the undertaking, and the succeeding railroads, which were begun in 1834, 1848, 1852, and 1853, added immeasurably to the development of the coal resources of the state. Between the years 1830 and 1860, practically all the coal mined in the state was dug from the outcrop near the river or from the river beds, and shipped by boat to Mobile. Transporting coal down the Warrior River was one of great risk, required much skill, and frequently had heavy losses. It is recorded that this coal was sold to the gas company in Mobile in 1844; it was most likely mined from the Black Creek Seam. In 1914, on the completion of Lock 17, the Warrior River became a navigable stream from 9 miles above Cordova, Ala., to Mobile and offers a great opportunity for the future development of the coal resources of the state.

The mining industry has undergone significant technological advances in metallurgical process methods in recent years. The 1000 tpd concentrator of St. Lawrence Colum-bium Metals Corp. portrays the continuing effort made by the industry to achieve economical concentration of new and difficult ores. During the active search for sources of uranium in the early fifties, radioactive minerals were found in the Oka district near Montreal. The compatatively small quantities of uranium which were found occurred in association with widespread columbium (niobium) mineralization which included perovskite, a calcium titanate containing roughly 40% Cb2O5; niocalite, a silicate containing some 20% Cb2O5; and pyrochlore, a calcium niobate containing 45 -70% Cb2O5 as well as fluorine and some water. An idealized formula for one type of pyrochlore is: A typical chemical analysis of pyrochlore is shown in Table I. An important feature of this analysis is the lack of tin, lead, sulphur and P2O5 which conforms with the requirements of most consumers. In general the cerium content varies with sodium content and any increase in Ta2O5 lowers the Cb2O5 content of the concentrate. However, Ta2O5 rarely exceeds 0.5%. The carbonatite host rock of the columbium mineralization has the average mineral composition shown in Table 11. In Table 11, the term "diopside" is used to cover all silicates except mica which is shown separately because of the problems involved with its separation during the concentration process. In some ore zones, small quantities of rare earth minerals, such as monazite are present.

There is a need for concepts and techniques developed specifically for blasting in areas where the rock is loose or highly fractured. Common practice has been to use techniques developed in hard homogeneous rock and reduce the amount and strength of explosive. However, this rule cannot cope with all of the special characteristics of highly fractured rock and has not adequately taken care of the problems of overbreak, gouging, and wall damage. The main problems encountered when blasting in highly fractured rock are controlling the amount of rock broken, minimizing the damage done to the remaining wall material, and adapting blasting methods to rapidly fluctuating ground conditions. In addition, because it frequently needs timber support right into the blasting area, there is also the problem of how not to shoot out the timber when heavy loading is needed in order to offset a loss of impact caused by deflection of the detonation wave off the numerous rock interfaces, and by the absorption of the wave by resilient clay particles. Another consideration is the fact that less attention needs to be directed toward producing satisfactory fragmentation of the broken rock. Those blasting methods designed for breaking hard rock into manageable segments are, as a rule, not needed in highly fractured rock which will usually break along its own numerous fracture lines.

T. Rosenqvist—The most interesting point in this paper is the observed transfer of iron into the slag in the initial stage of the desulphurization process, after which the iron again is reduced to the metallic state. The authors interpret this observation as showing that the sulphur enters the slag as an iron-sulphur compound which subsequently is decomposed by the slag. The present writer has previously suggested the following equation for the desulphurization process: S + O2- ? S2- + O For equilibrium in the blast furnace the oxygen potential is defined by equilibrium with graphite and CO of 1 atm pressure: C + O ? CO [2] During the desulphurization process the reactions proceed in the direction of the arrows. If one assumes eq 2 to be significantly slower than eq 1, the transfer of sulphur into the slag, in accordance with eq 1, will build up a local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface very much higher than that corresponding to the value defined by eq 2. This is possible because the equilibrium oxygen potential in eq 1 is high as long as the sulphur content in the slag is low. This oxygen potential will again be able to oxidize some iron: Fe + O ? Fe2+ + O2- and an increase in the iron content of the slag will be observed. Adding up eqs 1 and 3 one obtains: S + Fe ? S2- + Fe2+ The net effect is thus in harmony with the experimental observation but is obtained without assuming any close ties between the sulphur and iron atoms during the process. Furthermore, it follows from eqs 1 and 2 that when the sulphur content in the slag increases, and equilibrium with C and CO is finally approached, the local oxygen potential at the metal-slag interface will decrease, and the iron in the slag will be reduced back into its metallic state. C. E. Sims-—The data and conclusions presented in this paper are thoroughly convincing in establishing the mechanism of sulphur transfer from iron to slag as in a blast furnace. The evolution of gaseous CO in step 3 of the reactions given on p. 1112 makes the process virtually irreversible. Assuming that the process is similar in slag-metal systems other than in the blast furnace, it is readily seen why free CaO and re-ducing conditions so greatly favor desulphurization. On the other hand, the very effective desulphurization obtained in oxidizing slags when strongly basic, must be attributed to the relatively high stability of CaS as compared to FeS. The ease and simplicity with which the reactions of classic chemistry agree with the experimental data and explain the mechanism is noteworthy. The concept of molecules of FeS, soluble in both phases (metallic iron is not soluble in the slag), migrating from the iron to the slag and there reacting with CaO, which is soluble only in the slag phase, is clear and uncomplicated. This is likewise true for step 3. Those who would deny the existence of molecules or molecular-type combinations in liquid iron, must strain to provide a mechanism so lucid. In the absence of molecules, the Fe and S exhibit a remarkable collusion. L. S. Darken—The investigation and interpretation of rate phenomena in the range of steelmaking temperatures is a difficult task. Most of the laboratory investigations of steelmaking reactions have been concerned with equilibrium. Having determined the equilibrium, our attention naturally focuses next on the mechanism and rate of approach to equilibrium. The authors seem to have contributed substantially to our understanding of these factors for the case of sulphur transfer. I should like to ask the authors whether they consider that the sulphur transfer reaction is diffusion controlled as many high-temperature reactions seem to be. If so, it would seem reasonable to suppose that the slow diffusion step of the process is the transfer across a pseudo-static layer or film similar to that considered in heat flow problems. As the diffusivity and fluidity are smaller for the slag than for the metal, it may tentatively be assumed that the sulphur gradient exists in a thin layer in the slag adjacent to the slag-metal interface and that the metal and the main mass of slag are each maintained uniform by convection. On this basis the amount of sulphur transferred across unit area per unit time is D p (?S%)/100 ?1, where D is the diffusivity, p the density, (?S%) the difference in percent sulphur on the two sides of the layer, and ?l is the layer thickness. At the beginning of the experiment the main body of the slag and hence one side of the layer contains no sulphur; therefore (?S%) may be replaced by (S%), the sulphur content of the slag at the slag-metal interface, which in turn is equal to L[S%] where [S%] is the sulphur content of the metal and L is the distribution coefficient. The rate of transfer thus becomes DpL[S%]/100 ?l, which the authors designate K[S%]. Equating these two quantities and setting D = 10-6 cm2 per sec, p = 3 g per cm3, L = 40, and K = lo-+ g cm-2 sec-1, it is found that ?l, the film thickness, is about 0.01 cm—a value of the order of magnitude of that found in heat transfer problems in liquids. The uncertainty of the numerical values used leaves much to be desired, but at least it can be said that this calculation tends to support the proposed model involving diffusion through a film. Although this does not seem to affect the general argument, I should like to call attention to the fact that the diffusivity3 of sulphur in hot metal is found (on conversion of units) to be about 10-4 cm2 per sec rather than 104 cm2 per sec as stated by the authors. The three equations written by the authors to express the steps in the overall process of sulphur transfer may alternatively be written ionically as only two Fe + S = Fe++ + S-- Fe++ + O-- + C (graphite or metal) = CO (gas) + Fe where the underscore is used to designate the metallic phase; ionic species are slag constituents. After the authors have so neatly demonstrated that iron and sulphur transfer together (at least initially), this fact seems almost self evident; from eq 4 it is seen that if sulphur acquires a negative charge during transfer

In the pellet-producing industry it is sometimes claimed that "The pellets are made in the concentrator," or that "The key to good pellets is in the balling operation." However, one claim is generally agreed on: If you can put in, on, and through the indurating furnace a good green ball of Proper size and adequate strength to withstand the handling, load, dehydration, and thermal shock until it is properly heat-hardened, you will have the pellet product you desire-that is, a "competent" green ball. The strength requirements that enable a competent green ball to withstand the environment of the indurating furnace are usually less restrictive than those for transporting the green ball from its source of production to the furnace. Experience has shown that different types of material may have different balling characteristics which may impose limitations on the quality of the green ball that can easily be produced under normal conditions. Therefore, if a specific material will produce a green ball that meets the physical requirements for competency in the furnace, but not for handling or transportation, various practices must be instituted to overcome this deficiency. In other words, if a normal handling system is too rigorous for the green balls that can be produced under standard conditions, then "handling with care" should be tried.

UehliNg, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—In adding my mite to the discussion, I wish to touch on a few points which bear emphasizing and perhaps a little further elucidation. Mr. Grammer says that he "found the electric pig-breaker at Duquesne, if used in connection with the iron-chill, less expensive and more satisfactory " thau the casting-machine. The cost of handling the iron over the Duquesne casting-niachine is about double the average cost of the other Uehling machines at the several Carnegie plants. It is nearly as expensive to run as the Hey1 & Patterson machines, and while Mr. Grammer&apos;s statement is, no doubt, true, as applied to that particular machine and breaker, it should be borne in mind that the machine at Duquesne had embodied in it several new features, which were not improvements; also that it was taxed beyond its economic capacity. IN the spring of 1905 I was employed by Messrs. Bradley and Requa, under our fellow member, Thomas Cox, on the mill plans for the Nevada Consolidated, when an opportunity came to go to the Philippines to erect a small mill on the property of the Benguet Consolidated. This I accepted, expecting to be away eight months or so, but it was seven years before I got back. .I sailed in May, on the Coptic, having as room-mate as far as Kobe, A. E. Drucker, who was going out to Korea for the Oriental Consolidated. It was the first trans-ocean trip for either of us, and we had some rather unusual experiences. This was toward the close of the Russo-Japanese war and the Russian fleet was known to be on the way from Suez to Asiatic waters, but it was a matter of doubt whether they would risk a passage between Japan and the mainland, or take the longer but obviously safer route outside of Japan. The Coptic carried much contraband of war for Japan, so naturally did not care to meet this fleet. No definite word being available at Honolulu, we went to the Midway Islands, but the cable station there had very little information to offer, so we proceeded cautiously toward Japan. On the last afternoon out, we steamed due north at half speed for several hours, and finally sneaked into Yokohama at night, to learn that &apos; the Russian fleet had met the Japanese the day before and had been annihilated. We sailed over the spot in the Sea of Japan a week later, and when we got to Manila we found three of the Russian boats interned and being guarded by the monitor Monadnock and a cruiser. This was only a matter of form, as the Russians were only too glad to be there for the rest of the war, and the boats could not have gone far anyway, for they were literally shot to pieces. The Admiral&apos;s flagship had a hole within 3 ft. of the water line, for ward, through which a man could enter by stooping.

BINARY- alloy phases having the A15-type crystal structure have been described as occurring at a simple and more or less invariant stoichiometric composition (A3B) which corresponds to the relative number of atoms occupying each of the two crystallographi lattice sites in this structure.1,2 It is frequently assumed, therefore, that each crystallographic site is occupied exclusively by one kind of atom. In most cases, however, there have been insufficient experimental data to establish whether atomic ordering is, in fact, complete. Recent studies have shown that binary A15-type phases are sometimes stable over an appreciable composition range3&apos;&apos;* and, occasionally, the composition range of stability does not even include the "ideal" A3B stoichiometric composition.5-7 We have observed the existence of nonstoichiometric A15-type phases in the binary systems Cr-Pt and Cr-Os. This has not been reported in previous work on these alloy systems.1,8-11 A series of alloys, each weighing approximately 30 g, was prepared by are-melting in an Ar-He atmosphere using 99.999 pct Cr, 99.999 pct Os, and 99.99 pct Pt as starting materials. Each alloy was melted four times with a total weight loss of less than 1 pct. The stoichiometric (A3B) alloys were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed at 1200°C for periods of time ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Examination of the alloy microstructures revealed that little change had occurred over this time interval and it was therefore assumed that the microstructures were fairly representative of equilibrium conditions. No evidence of contamination was observed although there was apparently some loss of chromium which was confined to a thin layer at the surface of the specimens. The quartz tubes were quenched from the annealing temperature into cold water. X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the stoichiometric alloys revealed an estimated 10 to 30 pct of second phases which were tentatively identified as phases previously reported in these binary-alloy systems.8-11 A second series of alloys was prepared by mixing -325 mesh metal powders having a nominal purity of 99.9 pct and compressing these mixed powders in a cylindrical die at a pressure of 43,000 psi. These alloys, each weighing 15 g, and some of the arc-melted alloys were annealed in a high-temperature vacuum furnace heated by tantalum strips at a pressure of 10-8 Torr and were rapidly cooled by turning off the furnace power. X-ray and metallographic examination of both series of alloys served to establish the composition ranges of the A15-type phases. Although some chromium losses occurred during the vacuum annealing, they were largely confined to a thin layer on the outer surfaces of the samples. It was established that the A15 phases occur in the Cr-Pt system at 21 ± 1 at. pct Pt after 1 week at 1200°C and in the Cr-Os system at 28 ± 1 at. pctOs after 1 day at 1400°C (see Table I). We also observed that an arc-melted stoichiometric (A3B) alloy in the Cr-Ir system was single-phase (A15-type) in the "as-cast" condition in agreement with previous work.8,13 In addition we obtained a sample of the Cr-Os A15-type phase from Argonne National Laboratory. This alloy contained less than 1 pct second phase12 and was submitted to a density measurement. The density measurement yielded a value of 11.14 g per cu cm in comparison to a theoretical value of 11.25 g per cu cm calculated using the observed lattice constant (4.6806Å) of this alloy. The uncertainty in measurement was 0.1 pct but the sample may have contained some cracks or minor imperfections which could account for the low experimental value. We have also studied the atomic ordering in these phases by means of integrated line intensity measurements using thick, flat, rotating powder samples and CuK a radiation in an X-ray diffractometer. We have obtained order parameters of 0.90 for the Cr-Pt phase, 0.89 for the Cr-Ir phase, and 0.64 for the Cr-Os phase using the formula: where s is the usual Bragg and Williams order parameter, ra is the fraction of chromium atoms in A sites, and FA is the fraction of chromium atoms in the alloy. The values obtained are estimated to be accurate within ±4 pct. If the unusually small value for the order parameter of the Cr-Os A15 phase were due to the existence of lattice vacancies on the "B-atom" sites, then a density of 10.04 g per cu cm would be expected in contrast to the observed value of 11.14 g per cu cm. Few subjects have attracted the attention of metallurgists more than oxygen in steel. From the days of Mushet and Ledebur interest in this subject has been increasing, and as additional knowledge has become available, the problem has naturally grown more complex. Instead of using the simple term "oxygen" we now distinguish between iron oxide, silicates of various kinds, oxysulfides, oxygen as gas and oxygen in solid solution in steel. There are five general methods for determining oxides in steel: hydrogen reduction; vacuum fusion; various wet-extraction methods, including electrolytic methods; methods depending on volatilization of the iron away from the oxides; and metallographic methods. For oxygen in solid steel each of these methods has both advantages and disadvantages. The hydrogen-reduction method is of no use on steels above about 0.20 per cent. carbon;&apos; furthermore, it gives only FeO and possibly some MnO. The vacuum-fusion method2 is expensive and gives total oxygen, with the exception of some A12O3, and does not differentiate between the various oxides in which the oxygen exists. Most of the wet extraction methods3 give only the more insoluble oxides SiO2 and A12O3, though the iodine method gives MnO to an uncertain degree (information that may be more misleading than no information

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;), and that (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;)— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). Recently published data indicate that the water vapor content of a gas, as determined by dew point measurement, is inaccurate when the gas has been dehydrated with diethylene glycol. Water vapor contents and dew point measurements of gases dehydrated with triethylene glycol have been obtained in this investigation in order to determine the magnitude of a similar error, if one exists. Experimental data show a very low concentration of triethylene glycol vapor in gases dehydrated at atmospheric ternperatures and pressures ranging from 500 to 2,500 psia and that the accuracy of dew point measurements is not impaired by the presence of triethylene glycol vapor. INTRODUCTION Nearly all natural gas transported by pipe line to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low residual moisture content in order to assure maximum transmission efficiency and continuous delivery under peak load conditions. Without dehydration, water vapor often condenses in pipe lines in quantities sufficient to restrict the flow3 and. under low atmospheric temperature conditions, gas hydrates may form and plug gathering. transmission and distribution facilities. Gas may be dehydrated to pipe line specifications by a number of methods. The most widely used methods are (1) adsorption of water vapor on a solid dessicant such as activated bauxite, alumina or silica gel,&apos; (2) by absorption of water vapor by either diethylene or triethylene glycol-water solutions of high glycol concentration,11,13 and (3) by simultaneous expansion-refrigeration of very high pressure gas in which gas hydrates are purposely formed and then quickly decomposed.&apos;"" Of these three fundamental methods, the adsorption and absorption processes provide the bulk of the dehydrated gas moving to market at the present time. The expansion-refrigeration process. a relatively new development, is gaining in favor because of its simplicity but is sharply limited in its application by available differentials between source and gathering system pressures. Where gas sale or purchase contracts contain a maximum water vapor content specification, the water vapor content is usually determined by measuring the dew point of the gas at system pressure. Knowing he dew point temperature and the system pressure, the water vapor content of the gas is determined from a graphical correlation of saturation, or dew point, temperature us the water vapor content of the gas which is customarily expressed as pounds of water vapor per million cubic feet of gas measured at 14.7 psia and 60°F. Dew points are usually measured with the U. S. Bureau of Mines Dew Point Tester. shown in Fig. 1, which is well suited for use at temperatures lower than 120°F and at pressurei; ranging from atmospheric to 3,000 psi. A number of correlations of dew point temperatures vs water vapor content are available,3,5,15 the most recent of which is that by McCarthy et al.4 Where natural gas is dehydrated by absorhing contact with concentrated diethylene glycol-water solutions. considerable difficulty is experienced in observing water dew points due to condensation of liquid hydrocarbon and glycol films on the mirrored surface of the dew point tester. Riesenfeld and Frazierl2 report that the dew point method for determining the water vapor content of a dietllylene glycol-treated natural gas is in error due to the glycol content of the condensate formed on the tester mirror, and that the water vapor content of the gas tested is actually lower than that indicated by the standard&apos; dew point-water vapor content correlation. Extensive experience in testing gases dehydrated by concentrated triethylene glycol-water solutions lias not revesled difficulties of the nature cited above for diethylene glycol.
