DEFINITE data on the amplitude and effect of ground movement in specific mineral formations, caused by various methods used in the mining of ores, coal, and nonmetals, or in the extraction through wells of petroleum, sulphur, and soluble salts, are increasingly needed because of legal liabilities from damage to overlying or adjacent properties, and growing concern as to the conservation of national mineral resources. Not since the committee was established in 1923 has it been so difficult to get technical papers giving ground movement and subsidence data from specific mine operators. The reasons given, as above indicated, are pending or threatening lawsuits. There are three major objectives in ground movement and subsidence studies : (1) Maximum recovery of a mineral resource. (2) Minimizing damage to surface structures, highways, railroads, and agricultural lands caused by caving or subsidence, which may in some situations, as along the Gulf of Mexico shore, cause flooding by surface waters. (3) Lessening damage to overlying or adjacent mineral by back-filling of mine excavations as completely as possible.

Annealed, .Poly crystalline, low carbon steel exhibits a phenomenon known as the "yield point." If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, drops suddenly, fluctuates about some constant load value for a time and then rises with further strain. The load at which the sudden drop occurs is called the "upper yield point"; the load at which deformation proceeds at constant load is known as the "lower yield point"; the amount of elongation at constant load is termed the "yield point elongation." Deformation which occurs during the yield point elongation is heterogeneous in nature, deformed metal existing next to undeformed metal. The drop in load from the upper yield point is concurrent with the formation of a band of deformed metal which usually appears at a stress concentration such as a fillet and at an angle of approximately 45" with the direction of pull. As deformation proceeds during the yield point elongation, the deformed region grows until the entire specimen has been strained an amount equal to the strain in the first band. A phenomenon very often associated with the yield point is that of strain aging. Aging in steels may be of two types: quench aging, or precipitation hardening, and strain-aging. Strain aging differs from precipitation hardening in that if the metal is merely strained instead of given a solution anneal and quenched, it then undergoes changes in properties similar to those observed in quench aging. The yield point effect and strain aging are most markedly exhibited by low carbon steel, but have been observed in other alloys. Numerous explanations for the mechanisms of both phenomena have been advanced, but the evidence for the acceptance of any of the hypotheses is incomplete. One of the explanations of the yield point phenomenon frequently proposed is that there exists a honeycomb of grain boundary material that supports the load above the yield strength of the ferrite and that when this network ruptures, the ferrite flows with no increase in load. This notion was first advanced by Dalbyl in 1913 and has been since put forward in more concrete form by many investigators. The testing of this hypothesis was, in part, the object of the present investigation. Similarly, the mechanism by which strain aging occurs remains to be explained. Presumably, it is a precipitation hardening phenomenon similar to quench aging, the precipitation being initiated by strain. However, it is not known whether the process is a solution and precipitation effect or a change in solubility due to strain. One obvious method of determining whether or not the yield point is a grain boundary phenomenon is to determine if single crystals exhibit a yield point. Low and Gensamer2 have shown that carbon and nitrogen are responsible for the yield point and aging in steel and that these effects can be eliminated by the removal of these elements through wet hydrogen purification. Single crystals that have been grown in wet hydrogen treated material must then be recarburized or re-nitrided in order to evaluate the effect of grain boundaries. In the present investigation, single crystals of iron which had been annealed in wet hydrogen to remove the carbon and nitrogen were cut into two specimens having the same orientation with respect to the tension axis. Of these, one specimen was pulled in tension in the wet hydrogen treated state and the other was carburized or nitrided and tested similarly. All the crystals were examined for a yield-point and strain aging. The grain boundary hypothesis for the explanation of the yield point in steel has been tested only indirectly previously. Arrowsmith,3 Andrew and Lee,4 Edwards and Pfeil,5 Fell,6 Ludwik and Scheu,7 Winlock and Leiter8 and others found a decrease in proportional limit and yield point effect with an in-

The performance of laboratory water floods is compared with the flooding behavior calculated by the Buckley-Leverett techniques from steady-state relative permeability-saturation relations. Both the steady-state and unsteady-state experiments were conducted on the same sand-packed column. Relative permeabilities were calculated by the Welge technique from the unsteady-state waterflooding displacement experiments and compared with those measured by steady-state techniques. An evaluation of the various calculation procedures was made. It was demonstrated that steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to calczcJate waterflood performance. INTRODUCTION To calculate the waterflooding behavior of a given reservoir, relative permeability-saturation relations of the reservoir rock are required. These relative permeabilities are commonly measured on core samples by steady-state experiments such as the Penn State technique.' The relative permeabilities obtained in steady-state experiments are calculated from oil and gas flow rates and pressure drops measured under conditions of equilibrium distribution of oil and water in the pore spaces with slow approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, in water floods the water saturation at a given point changes rapidly with time as the flood front passes. Extensive research2 has shown that the steady-state relative permeabilities to oil and water are independent of the rate of flow and the fluid viscosities. Research has also demonstrated that the waterflooding performance of homogeneous sands uniformly contacted by water is independent of rate when capillary pressure gradients, which are important in short laboratory columns, are made negligible. However, there is little experimental data in the literature comparing relative permeabilities calculated from steady-state flow experiments with those calculated from flooding experiments. In this paper, the production data of two water floods and the relative permeabilities calculated from a series of steady-state experiments on an unconsolidated sand column are presented along with the comparisons calculated by the Buckley-Leverett and by the Welge techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine if steady-state relative permeabilities could be used to predict the waterflooding performance. This study also permitted an evaluation of the Buckley-Leverett and Welge calculation procedures and allowed an insight into the nature of microscopic displacement of oil by water. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus used in this investigation was a Lucite column 1 ft long and 11/2 in. in diameter. A drawing of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. Six pressure taps were evenly spaced along the top of the column to measure the oil pressures. Three pressure taps fitted with small porous disks were spaced along the side of the column to measure water pressure. Water was admitted to the inflow face of the sand through a porous disk while oil was admitted through a hole in the porous disk and distributed to the face of the sand by grooves machined in the porous disk. Retainer screens of 325-mesh stainless steel were cemented over the inlet and outlet ports and the pressure taps to prevent loss of sand. The column was packed with a clean dry sand all of which was finer than 200 mesh. Next, the sand was saturated with a solution of 150,000 ppm sodium chloride solution. CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

MARSHAL Foch has been made an honorary member of the four national American societies of civil, mining and metallurgical, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The governing bodies of these societies, aggregating 45,000 members, conferred this signal honor in expression of the appreciation of American engineers for the unmatched services of this master of engineering principles. At Engineering Societies Building, in New York City, on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13, the presidents of the four societies presented one beautifully engrossed certificate of honorary membership in the four societies. The auditorium was filled so that not even standing room was left, more than a half hour before the cere-monies began, and the main entrance on the street had to be closed. J. Vipond Davies, president of the United Engineering Society, made the opening address. Col. William Barclay-Parsons, 'who was commander of the first engineer regiment to go abroad, addressed Marshal Foch in French. Colonel Parsons said: The art of engineering was defined a long time ago as "the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man." No better definition can be found today. Of all the sources of power in nature, the greatest, the most valuable, and at the same time the most difficult to direct, is the energy of man himself. He who can direct human energy and turn it to the service of mankind is a great engineer. You, Marshal, have directed a greater mass of human energy than any other man has ever done. And you have successfully directed this mass for the highest uses of mankind, in that you by its aid have preserved for him one of the most precious of human possessions-liberty-liberty not only for your own illustrious country, but for all the nations of the world. The four national engineering societies, of the United States now desire to make record of their appreciation of this fact and to convey to you an expression of their most profound admiration for the great leader of men by conferring on you honorary member-ship in all the societies, the highest honor in their gift and one hitherto never conferred on a single individual. Four thousand members of these societies were enrolled in the armed service of the United States, the greater part of whom had the glorious distinction to serve the common cause in France under your orders. They heard the voice and they saw the hand of the master as he led them through battle to victory. Now we desire that you will still continue to lead us, but in peace, by permitting us to inscribe your name at the head of our roll of honor, where it will be, as your deeds have been, an example to us to do better work, and where it will remain forever a noble inspiration for all future generations. The ammonium sulphate process for recovering alumina from clays was proposed by Rinman, Buchner, and others many years ago, and more recently various modifications have been investigated both here arid abroad.l-Is The process, as it is being investigated by the Bureau of Mines, involves the following essential steps: (I) sulphating the alumina in the clay by baking with ammonium sulphate at approximately 4m°C., (2) leaching with water to extract aluminum sulphate and ammonium sulphate, (3) crystallization of ammonium alum, (4) conversion of the alum to aluminum hydroxide by the ammonia gases given off during the baking, and (5) calcining the aluminum hydroxide to alumina. The over-all reaction between kaolinite (the most important alumina mineral in most clays) and ammonium sulphate during the baking step may be expressed as follows: Al2O8.2SiO2.2H2O + 4(NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 + 6NH3(g) + SH2O(g) + 2SiO2 [i] There is definite evidence. as is shown later. that the aluminum occurs in the baked product as anhydrous ammonium alum rather than as aluminum sulphate, provided the baking temperature is not much above 4o0°C. It is probable that the reaction takes place in the following steps: (NH4)2SO4 = NH3 -(- NH4HSO4 [2] Al2O3.2SiO2.2H2O + ;}NH4HSO4 = A12(SO4)3 + 3NH3 + 5H2O + 2SiO2 [3] A12(SO4)3 + (NH4)2SO4 = (NH4)2SO4.A12(SO4)3 [4] In onc modification of the process, the ammonium sulphate is first decomposed according to Eq. z, and the clay is treated with the resultant ammonium acid sulphate. Reaction I is highly endothermic. On the basis of the best available data, the following values have been estimated for the changes in heat content and free energy in calories per mol: -AH = 331,040 - 34T -AF = 331~040 - 78.3T log T - 671.8T The heat required' at 25OC is 320,900 cal. per mol, or 5650 B.t.u. per pound of alumina. The theoretical equilibcium pressure of NHa, based on the free-energy equation given above, increases very rapidly as the temperature rises above 3o0°C., and reaches one atmosphere at 43s°C. Ammonium alum solutions are almost ideal for crystallization. A saturated solution of ammonium alum contains 126. grams of AlzOa per 1000 grams of water at 90°C. and only 16.5 at 20 C. The constitutional diagram has been determined in part for the sgstem Gd-Fe. Seven intermetallic compounds have been found at compositions corresponding to the following Gd-Fe ratios; 2:3, 1.2, 1:3, 2:7, 1:4, 1:5, and 2:17. The GdFe, com-pound has a congruent melting point above 18000C, whereas all of the remaining compounds melt incongruently, A eutectic exists at 13 wt pct Fe at a temperature of 860°C. ALTHOUGH an increasing amount of information is becoming available on the metallurgy of pure rare earth metals, relatively few studies have been made on alloy systems of the rare earths with the transition metals; iron, nickel, and cobalt. Even less data are extant on gadolinium alloys although it could be expected that such alloys might possess interesting structural and magnetic properties. In this paper, we report investigation of the gadolinium-iron alloy system. Studies on systems containing nickel and cobalt will be presented in subsequent papers. Previous data on gadolinium-iron compounds have been reported by Endter and Klemm1 and Jep-son and Duwez.2 Both reports agree on the existence of the GdFe2 phase, which crystallizes with the C-15type structure (face-centered cubic). This is in accord with results of the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The gadolinium metal used was prepared by met-allothermic reduction of high purity gadolinium fluoride. A typical analysis of the metal thus produced indicated the principal impurities to be oxygen, 0.24 pct, and tantalum, 0.2 pct. The iron metal used for alloying was a reagent grade material. Alloys were prepared by arc melting mixtures of the respective metals. Appropriate quantities of the two component metals were carefully weighed, blended and compacted. The compacts were then melted in an arc furnace consisting of a water-cooled copper hearth plate and a water-cooled tungsten-tipped counter electrode contained in a brass vacuum chamber. The furnace was evacuated to an absolute pressure of less than 1 with the leak rate established as being less than 20 per min. The furnace was then back-filled to a pressure of 25 mm of Hg, with a 75 pct He-25 pct Ar mixture. Arc melting at 25 v and 300 amp was maintained for about 30 to 60 sec until the entire visible area of the sample became molten, by which time surface tension had drawn the molten metal pool into a large bead. After allowing the furnace to cool, the alloy button was inverted and the melting process repeated. A series of melts was made covering entire composition ranges from 100 pct Gd to 100 pct Fe. All samples were examined metallographically in the as-melted condition. As the phase diagram became rationalized, and differential thermal analysis had given indications of temperature arrests, annealing was carried out in vacuo or in argon. Generally, compositions containing more than about 60 pct Gd were heat treated at 750°C and alloys containing less than this quantity of gadolinium were annealed at 1000°C. Prolonged annealing times were of the order of 100 to 200 hr. Metallographic examination was repeated on the annealed materials. Although little material loss was noted during alloy preparation, chemical analyses were made on all specimens prepared. The following standard, analytical techniques were used. Samples were dissolved in hydrochloric acid; insoluble material was filtered off, ignited and fused with potassium pyro-sulfate. The cold melt was leached with dilute acid and the solution thus obtained added to the main sample solution. Gadolinium was always determined gravimetri-callv as oxide from oxalate ignition. Iron was removed from an aliquot sample by electrolysis on a mercury cathode at approximately six volts. Gadolinium in the iron-free electrolyte was then precipitated as oxalate which was subsequently ignited to oxide. Marquard—The problem of the automatic control of a grinding-classification circuit is not nearly as simple as has been indicated and it cannot be universally solved through the application of this device. The sound emanating from a ball mill such as the metallic clink of the balls against the liners can at times be misleading. The fact that the sound level due to the balls hitting the liners may be at a minimum does not necessarily mean that the mill is properly loaded. I have in mind an ore we treat that has a soft talcy gangue. The soft fluffy nature of this material makes the sound from the ball mill a most misleading parameter that is worthless as a means for controlling the amount of ore fed to the mill. In every milling plant there are transportation lags due to the time it takes the ore to travel from the mill bins to the ball mill. In many plants there may be several different transportation lags due to varying distances of bins from ball mill. These transportation lags can most seriously affect the operation of a controller. It has been found that under many circumstances the transportation lags can be so bad as to cause the controller to hunt seriously. Hunting can and in many cases does become so serious as to render automatic control impossible because of the surges it causes. While it is possible to compensate for this type of lag, this apparatus does not lend itself readily to accomplish the required compensation. Further, if there are groups of bins at various distances from the ball mill, compensation for one may not be sufficient or may be too great for another. Each milling plant presents a separate problem. The apparatus as presently described does not appear sufficiently flexible to accomplish this. It should be noted that the load on the classifier rakes is determined by measuring the current input to the rake drive motor. Variations in line voltage will

BECAUSE of the wide-spread publicity given to Nylon yarn as being made from ?coal, air, and water,? the general public has become conscious of the nonfuel uses of bituminous coal. Some of these uses are as filler for fertilizer, carbon for the absorption of orders, for water supply, and for the bedding of cattle. Spectacular as are these accomplishments the fact is that only a small amount of coal is used for nonfuel purposes. It is on the utilization of coal as fuel that the industry depends. Practically all the coal mines for years to come will be used for making coke for the generation of heat. Recently much attention has been paid to the significance of ash in coal. Another study worthy the interest of metallurgists in the iron and steel industries if that of Dr, Lowry of the Carnegie Institute of Technology relative to the percentage of sulphur in coal and coke.

The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. The special bricks are laid in cement, six to a circle, around a lubricated pipe used as a form, and lowered in sections inside the large drive pipe; the bottom section is seated in a socket drilled in the solid rock, having the same inside

A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals1 has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.2 It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. ? Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals.

STUDIES of structure-sensitive properties, especially mechanical behavior, have shown that grain and subgrain structure play an important role. The mechanical properties of tungsten, in particular, are sensitive to the nature of the intergranular structure. Substructure and dislocation networks in single-crystal and polycrystalline tungsten have been studied by Nakayama et al.' Various orders of substructure were observed ranging from a microscopic first order (grain diameter: 2 to 8 mm) to a microscopic second order (grain diameter: 50 to 300 p), and, within the latter, dislocation networks forming an even smaller order of substructure. In their single crystals, grown by arc fusion, the degree of misorientation in each order was small: 16'3OU, -11, and -10" for the first-, second-, and third-order substructure, respectively. To study the properties of polycrystalline tungsten, powder metallurgy tungsten is generally used. However, in a mechanical property investigation, the zone-melted or arc-fusion crystals are more desirable than the powder metallurgy product due to their higher purity and absence of porosity and other defects inherent in consolidation by powder metallurgy. Grain boundaries can also be produced in melted stock by working and recrystallizing. However, material with subgrain mis orientations of the order of several degrees (high-angle substructure) has not been reported previously and is the subject of this communication. Crystals were grown by electron-beam, floating-zone melting. The starting material, Sylvania Pure-tung welding rod, was given one zone pass at a traversal rate of -2 mm per min. Through control of the zone temperature, it was possible to influence the degree of crystal perfection. By maintaining the zone at a high degree of superheat, high-perfection crystals could be grown. However, at temperatures only slightly above the melting point, the zone-melted crystals contained a high-angle substructure. A sensitive control of the zone temperature was not possible due to the difficulty of estimating the temperature of the zone and of providing a constant supply of power to the sample. Therefore, an empirical method, using the shape of the molten zone as a criterion, was adopted as an indication of temperature. At high degrees of superheat, the surface tension of the molten zone decreases and a neck forms at the top of the zone, whereas at low zone temperatures the diameter of the zone remains reasonably uniform. Although it was not possible to obtain a continuous variation of misfit angle, the conditions could be directed toward the growth of either high- or low-angle substructure by maintaining only a slight neck in the zone (sufficient to establish that it was molten) or a well-necked zone, respectively. Mass spectrographic analyses of both types of material revealed no significant differences in the concentrations of their impurities. The degree of misorientation at high angles was obtained by measuring the angular spread of spots corresponding to a single reflection on a Laue back-reflection photograph. Fig. 1 shows a typical Laue back-reflection photograph of a crystal with a 3-deg spread. By measuring the angular deviation of the spots corresponding to a single reflection from the mean center of the spots around which constant angular deviation contours were drawn, an average angular spread of misfit could be calculated. The angular average was weighted by the number of spots observed in each angular interval. At angles greater than 5 to 6 deg the spots from different reflections begin to overlap, and cannot be associated with a particular reflection. Laue back-reflection photographs taken at different locations on samples .with approximately 3-deg spreads showed only a small difference in angular misorientation, less than 8' of arc, within individual specimens. The microstructure was examined using Berg-Barrett X-ray extinction contrast microscopy. Berg-Barrett photographs taken directly on the as-grown surface, Fig. 2, show an essentially equiaxed subgrain structure of -0.1 mm in average grain diameter in both high- and low-angle crystals. In reservoirs containing soft shales interbedded with oil-producing sands, it is possible to have water movement from the shales into the sands during reservoir depletion. This paper presents the results of scaled flow-model tests performed to investigate the efficiency of oil displacement by this vertical influx of water into oil-producing sands. In these model tests, the effects of rate of influx and rock wettability were considered. Oil recoveries by shale-wafer influx and by water flooding were cornpared after 0.4 hydrocarbon volume of water entered the producing sand. This comparison was made for water-wet and oil-wet systems. In water-wet sand, shale-water influx produces slightly less oil than conventional water flooding; in oil-wet sand, shale-water influx produces about one-half as much oil as conventional water flooding. In another type of comparison, it was found that shale-water influx followed by water flooding recovers less oil than water flooding alone. This is true for both water-wet and oil-wet sands. A comparison of tests run at different rates of shale-water influx shows that oil recovery is insensitive to rate in water-wet sand; in oil-wet sand, oil recovery decreases with decreasing rate of influx. INTRODUCTION Localized subsidence of the earth's surface has accompanied the depletion of some oil reservoirs, particularly in California,1, 2 along the Texas Gulf Coast,3 4 and in the Bolivar Coastal fields of Venezuela. Subsidence occurs when fluid withdrawals reduce the pressure in the reservoir. The reasons for subsidence accompanying a reduction in reservoir pressure are not known with certainty.10° However, there is considerable evidence that compaction of soft shale beds adjacent to producing oil sands can be a major cause of this subsi-dence.3, 6, 10-12 When the shales compact, a limited amount of water moves from the shales into the producing sands. A schematic illustration of this oil-producing mechanism is shown in Fig. 1. As the pressure in the sand declines due to oil production, a predominantly vertical pressure gradient develops at the sand-shale boundary. This causes water to move from the shale into the sand as indicated by the solid arrows. This paper reports the results of scaled flow-model tests to investigate the efficiency of oil displacement by the vertical influx of shale water into producing sands. The model tests were not performed with the aim of duplicating the recovery behavior of any specific reservoir. The primary purpose of the tests was to obtain a better understanding of oil displacement by shale-water influx. A knowledge of the oil- and water-production characteristics of even a simplified reservoir system should be of value to engineers estimating the performance of reservoirs where shale-water influx is occurring in conjunction with other production mechanisms. The following limitations and assumptions apply to the model work. 1. The sand of the prototype reservoir is homogeneous and horizontal. 2. The shale-water influx is uniformly distributed along the top and bottom of the sand member being studied. 3. No effects of edge-water drive or dissolved-gas drive that might accompany shale-water influx are considered. PROTOTYPE RESERVOIRS Scaled-model tests were performed to study oil displacement from three prototype reservoir sections. The reservoir sections modeled consist of single sand layers out of a sequence of -sand and -shale layers, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Each prototype represents a homogeneous, high-permeability, unconsolidated sand layer. In the field, the prototype is oriented in such a manner that one end is at the radius of drainage of a producing well and the other end is pointed toward the producing well (Fig. 2). The sand and fluid properties and the dimensions of the three prototypes are given in Table 1. The capillary pressure relationships for the three prototypes are presented in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. An extensive study was made of the aging characteristics of alloys based on the 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr composition hardened with aluminum and/or titanium, each up to 4 pct. Aging was followed by means of hardness and hot electrical resistance measurements as well as by X-ray and microscopy. Stress rupture tests at 1500°F were utilized as a check on the predicted behavior. THE titanium and aluminum hardened Ni-Cr alloys, exemplified by Nimonic 80 and Inconel X, constitute one of the more important groups of alloys developed to meet the demand for materials retaining their strength at elevated temperatures. For service in the temperature range 1200" to 1500°F, these alloys offer high creep resistance. With increasing service temperature, however, the strength of the simpler Ni-Cr base alloys falls off rapidly so that above 1500°F there is a significant loss of strength. The present investigation was undertaken with the hope that a better understanding of the factors controlling the precipitation hardening of these alloys would make it possible to increase the useful service temperature range. Primarily this investigation involved the study of the effects of titanium and aluminum on the hardening and the subsequent softening at elevated temperatures. The titanium and aluminum contents were each varied between 0 and 4 pct by weight at a constant nickel to chromium weight ratio of about 4:1. (Except when otherwise stated, all compositions are expressed on a weight basis.) The major part of the investigation was confined to alloys with less than 0.06 pct C. Recently several papers dealing with the identity of the microconstituents in the titanium and aluminum hardened Ni-Cr alloys have been published. Using X-ray analysis of the residues from anodic dissolution, Rosenbauml was only able to identify carbides and nitrides in Nimonic 80 and Inconel X. However, since Rosenbaum worked with alloys in the hot rolled rather than in the aged condition, his results are inconclusive. Recently Hignett' reported that the hardening of Nimonic 80 was due to the controlled precipitation of Ni,(TiAl) having the cubic Ni3A1 structure. Taylor and Floydv-" published the results of an investigation of the nickel-rich corner of the Ni-Cr-Ti, Ni-Cr-Al, and Ni-Ti-A1 systems. In the Ni-Ti and the Ni-A1 systems the hexagonal Ni,Ti phase, 7, and the cubic Ni3A1 phase, -y', respectively, exist in equilibrium with the nickel-rich solid solution. The interatomic distances in the basal plane of Ni,Ti and the octahedral planes of the matrix are almost equal, thus explaining the Wid-manstaetten type structure formed when Ni,Ti precipitates from solid solution. When Ni:,Al precipitates from solid solution, it appears usually in globular form, often dispersed along rows corresponding to definite crystallographic directions. The 7 and phases are also the only intermetallic compounds which occur in the nickel ternary alloys with up to 25 pct Cr and 10 pct Ti or Al. Taylor and Floyd found that Ni,Ti takes practically no nickel, chromium, or aluminum into solution. Nial, on the other hand, dissolves a considerable amount of chromium and titanium and some nickel. Up to three out of every five aluminum atoms could be replaced by titanium in Ni,Al. This substitution caused a slight increase (less than 1 pct) in the lattice parameter. With respect to the effect of variation in the titanium and aluminum contents on the high temperature strength of Nimonic 80 type alloys, Pfeil, Allen, and Conway" reported that an 80 pct Ni-20 pct Cr alloy containing 0.20 to 0.30 pct A1 had the highest creep resistance when the titanium content was kept between 1.65 and 2.75 pct. Experimental Procedure The materials used for this investigation were electrolytic nickel, electrolytic or low carbon chromium, sponge titanium and 2s aluminum. EXTRUSION processes are used in the commercial production of a wide variety of products, as indicated by the review presented a few years ago by D. K. Crampton.1 Most writers have confined themselves to a general description of the equipment and products and the engineer-ing aspects of the process. The few studies that have dealt with the metallurgical side of extrusion have been concerned primarily with an examination of the mode of flow of the metal during extrusion. This has been accomplished by the use of composite billets, by scribing grids on symmetrical sections of billets and observing the change of dimensions in the gridwork, or by examining microstructures in extruded sections.2-8 Another limitation of these original studies is that they were confined to the extrusion of very simple shapes, usually rods having a diameter of about one-fourth that of the billet. Tin is particularly well suited to the extrusion of collapsible tubes and similar shapes in which the extruded section is very small in comparison to the diameter of the billet or slug. In modern production, impact extrusion methods are generally employed, therefore the thickness of the slug is small compared to its diameter. Under these conditions the process differs considerably from the processes that have been most fully described in the literature, and it is known that the quality of the product is very sensitive to slight variations in any one of the many variable factors involved, such as composition and structure of the alloy, rate of extrusion, temperature, shape of punch and die. An exhaustive examination of all of the above-mentioned problems promises to produce so many data that it seems advisable to initiate the reports at this time, even though all of the factors outlined have not been examined fully, and to confine this paper to a description of the apparatus and method. Only tin and its alloys with small amounts of copper have been considered. These are the alloys most commonly used in this country for the production of the type of articles already described.

In reviewing the history of the metallurgy of zinc, I shall pass hastily over what is only of antiquarian interest. That has been excellently treated by Dr. Bernhard Neumann in "Die Metalle" (1904) and has been described briefly in my "Production and Properties of Zinc" (1902), in my "Lead and Zinc in the United States " (1908), and in other metallurgical works of more or less the same date. In this present monograph, I have it in mind to confine myself mainly to technical practice, especially to that of the last 75 years, prior to which period advance was slow and of no great moment. The ancients made brass by the cementation process, i.e., embedding copper in a mixture of calamine and carbon and heating, whereby zinc oxide was reduced and zinc was vaporized and combined with the copper. Zinc was isolated by some of the alchemists, who named it and knew something of its properties, but made no use of it. Long before then, however, zinc was produced in India. Later it was produced in southern China. Possibly the Chinese obtained their knowledge from India. The Chinese in remote places still produce small quantities of zinc. I have seen photographs of their furnaces; or pots, for they hardly deserve the dignity of being called furnaces. I imagine that they are the same that were used centuries ago, for I cannot conceive of anything more primitive. Anyway, it is certain that the idea of a commercial production of zinc in Europe was imported from the Orient, where the metal was known in commerce as Speauter and Spiauter, whence speltrum and finally our term spelter. Tutanego and Tuteneague are other old names. Dr. Isaac Lawson went to China about 1730, expressly to discover the method of its production. What connection there was between Isaac Lawson and John Champion we do not know, but the latter obtained in 1739 a patent for a process of distillation downward and at some time between 1740 and 1743 erected a works at Bristol and actually began the manufacture of spelter. A production of 200 tons per annum is mentioned. In about the year 1766, Rishop Watson visited the Champion works and saw the process in operation, which previously had been
