This paper describes a technique of polishing and etching specimens of open-hearth furnace slags or hearth aggregates for identification of the crystalline constituents —lime (CaO), tricalcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2), dicalcium silicate (2CaO.-SiO2), rnonticellite (CaO.MgO.SiO2), or forsterile (2MgO.SiO2), with especial em-phasis on the mineral merwinite (3CaO.-MgO.2SiO2). With proper standardization, this identification does not require the use of the petrographic microscope. The composition of basic open-hearth slags and furnace bottoms falls, almost without exception, within systems containing CaO, MgO, 'IFeO,,, MnO and SiOz, in which the number of basic molecules so greatly exceeds the orthosilicate ratio (two molecules of base to one of silica) that free basic oxides, and combinations between them such as alumi-nates or ferrites, are present in cooled specimens. Orthosilicates of (CaO + NgO) are the most common in such specimens, since in nearly all cases, except premelt slags, the molecular ratio of (CaO + MgO) to SiO, is more than 2 to I. When sufficient lime is available it combines with the silica to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02), which contains little, if any, IvfgO, FeO or MnO in solid solution whereas the latter oxides combine to form the oxide solid solution known as periclase. If the lime present is insufficient to form dicalcium silicate (2Ca0.Si02) it combines with Mgo to form either merwillite or moIlticellite (SiOz); these minerals take little if any FeO or MnO into solid solution and the remaining MgO, FeO and hInO combine as periclase. This generalization seems to be valid for basic slags and furnace bottoms, since minerals such as Ca0.MnOSi02 and CaO.FeO.SiOz are found only in slags in which the lime-silica ratio is less than 2 and are not observed in 'pecimens from furnace bottoms. The identification of crystalline constituents in such materials, especially of fine crystals in the groundmass, is difficult under the petrographic microscope. They are often masked by their neighbors because of their small size in relation to the thickness of the thin section and because of the presence of Opaque Or colored constituents. The indices of refraction and the optical sign of the mineral are sometimes difficult to determine because of the small size or because Of twinning or of inclusions within the crystal. Moreover, the positive identification of merwinite (3Ca0.Mg0.2Si02) from its optical properties is usually difficult in the presence of dicalcium silicate (zCaO.SiO2). POSSIBLE postwar trends of the more important world minerals will be determined in part by their present world position and by the acts and forces that have operated during the war period, so it is desirable first to review briefly what has been happening in the foreign field of metals and minerals. When we first entered this war we of the mineral profession were all acutely conscious of our lack of strategic minerals and other materials, which had to be imported in great quantities-minerals such as manganese, chrome, tin, mercury, nickel, and antimony. But we realized also that we had to acquire vast quantities of those minerals of which we had thought we were bountifully supplied. Our assumed domestic abundances turned out to be woefully deficient, and demands also arose for new minerals never before produced in large quantities. Some threescore minerals entered the strategic list of our imports. Ores from new sources had to be sought, developed, and transported. Tonnages in the millions of such bulk materials as zinc, lead, copper, chrome, and manganese flowed to feed our war efforts. Sparsely distributed minerals such as tin, mercury, antimony, tungsten, cobalt, mica, and corundum had to be lured from their rock lairs in greatly increased quantities to feed the hungry maw of war industry, and the rare minerals such as tantalite, columbite, beryl, and quartz crystals had to be developed and procured in quantities never before dreamed of. New uses such as radio and radar created demands for many minerals formerly thought of only as adornments of museum collections and not as pressing industrial minerals. Such minerals were never before mined in quantity.

THE CHAIRMAN (WILLIAM KELLY, Vulcan, Mich.).-Some 8 or 9 years ago I was at Daiquiri, only a. few miles east of Firmeza, where there are deposits of iron ore of the same general character. There is a great conical hill, perhaps 800 or 1,000 ft. in height and the ore deposit appears to be somewhat in a canoe shape on one side of the hill. The mining has been done by quarrying the ore in benches. These are called levels and to go to the 10th level it was necessary to take mules and ride to the top of the hill, which was to me an upside down arrangement of numbering levels and a novel method of entering and viewing a mine. A little copper ore can be seen in places, and not being a geologist I thought the deposit might possibly be a gossan, but none of the geologists who have written on the subject approve of this hypothesis and the great question seems to be what part, if any, the limestones have played in the origin of ore; whether these deposits are replacements of limestone and whether they are contact ,deposits between the limestone and the other rocks. Examinations have been made by many eminent geologists and the problem has been discussed vigorously on both sides. The deposits are exceedingly interesting from a commercial standpoint and although they have been studied for a number off years the origin of the ore is still a difficult and somewhat controversial question. J. T. SINGEWALD, JR., Baltimore, Md.-I have had the privilege of visiting these deposits and have been very much interested in this paper, of Dr. Roesler's; having been on the ground, I can easily appreciate the difficulties under which he labored in attempting to work out the geology of that region, and he certainly deserves considerable credit for the way in which he has deciphered the geological relations of the Firmeza district. There are several points in his paper 1 ,would like to discuss; first, in regard to the geological interpretations. His differs from previous interpretations in the relative age of the diorite and the granite, but you will note that Prof. Lindgren suggests the probability. that those two rocks are very closely of the same age, and Prof. Kemp actually suggests, although he does not-accept the idea, that the granite is probably later than the diorite, so that there seems to be no particular reason

This paper is presented as a suniniary report of the use of well gas composition correlations obtained from mass spectrometer recordings as a means of identification and determination of reservoir continuity. Conventional methods for detecting composition differences are en-pensive, elaborate, and difficult to obtain. This excludes the use of extensive composition data for most applications. During recent years the mass spec-trometer has come into general use as an analytical tool in petroleum refineries. The use of mass spectrometer composition patterns ir~ characterizing or "finger-printing" the produced gas from a reservoir, presents a novel method for correlatitlg gas samples from well to well. The mass spectrometer provides a trace similar to an electric log. having peaks which represent the abuntlnnce of certaitz hydrocarbons in the well gas sample. Without going further into the detailed analysis the idea has been advanced that these traces or patterns could be used as a means of identifying a particular natural gas. This theory has proven to be essentially correct. The mass spectrometer pattern method is simple and cheap as COi?7pared to other standard methods. It greatly facilitates the solution of reservoir and geological problems in which correlation of well gas Com-positions is a factor. Specific field applications have been made. This paper concerns the results obtained in 465 individual gas analyses from 35 fields and 77 res- ervoirs. In a number of cases it has been found that such data have been extremely valuable in the determination of reservoir continuity. In at least one case, the method was a valuable contribution in tracing a reservoir from sand to sand in a coinplex fnulted field involving n11rnerous gas reservoirs. Field applications are presented to illustrate the possibilities of the method at the present stage of developnient and to stimulate the ernployrnent of this new approach by geologists and petroleum engineers in the industry. INTRODUCTION Identification of producing horizons and the determination of reservoir continuity are often a problem in those areas where dome structures and highly faulted sands are encountered. To complicate the picture further, there may be numerous sands, one on top of the other which dip and diverge in different directions. Even though it may be possible to develop some solutions to the preceding problems on the basis of the geological and reservoir data on hand. it is readily recognized that substantiating data based on independent methods would he extremely valuable. It has been found through field studies that correiation of well gas composition can be used to advantage in the geological and engineering study of a complex reservoir identification problem. METHOD FOR COMPARISON AND CORRELATION OF WELL GAS SAMPLES Since a large number of well gas samples are required in a gas identification or reservoir con- tinuity problem, it is necessary that a method of analysis be employed which can detect differences in composition readily and inexpensively. Although detection would be possible by means of low temperature fractional distillation (POD) analpsis, the method requires a relatively large sample and is comparatively slow and expensive to run. The mass spectrometer affords an inexpensive and precise analysis of small well gas samples taken at the surface which are about 1/300 as large as a POD sample. These samples can be obtained by regular field personnei and shipped to the spectrometer for analysis. It is, therefore, a practical approach to the problem. A typical record from the mass spectrometer is illustrated in Fig. I. The peaks on the record represent the abundance of ions produced from the different hydrocarbon molecules making up the gas sam-ple. In well gas comparisons only five peaks are employed, since the other peaks are formed from the same gas molecules and furnish no additional information. The five peaks used represent the abundance of methane, propane, ethane, butane and heavier, and oxygen. They are referred to respectively as the 16, 29, 30, 43, and 32 peaks. There has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughtonl does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold-germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least 0.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at I2.0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The cutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 6 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C. reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of ger- manium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. Materials and Alloying The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050" to iioo°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hyper-eutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be OR composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallo-graphic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

The deformation modes of rhenium have been identified as those typical of the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium whose c/a ratios, in common with rhenium, are less than ideal for close packing. Slip is observed on (1010), (1011), and (0001) planes and twinning on (1121), (1122), and (1012) planes. The very high rate of work hardening is believed to be associated with intersecting partial dislocations on two (1010) systems which can combine to form sessile barriers. If the stacking fault energy is low, as postulated by Seeger, these barriers should be strong and not easily bypassed by cross slipping. Such an explanation could also account for the very small temperature dependence of the yield stress which was observed. RHENIUM is interesting scientifically as a member of the group of high melting point hexagonal metals: titanium, beryllium, and zirconium with a c/a ratio less than that for ideal close packing. Unlike them, however, it work hardens at a very high rate. This rate is greater and continues to a much higher degree of deformation than for nickel, normally considered to have a high rate of work hardening. This paper presents experimental observations on the modes of deformation of rhenium and, by comparison with other hexagonal metals, some speculation on the cause of the high work hardening. MATERIALS Johnson, Matthey rhenium powder of both 99.9 pct and 99.5 pct purity, see Table I, was compacted at 10 tons per sq in., part sintered at 1350°C in vacuo, and finally arc melted in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace to produce small buttons. Little difference was observed in the as-cast hardness or working down behavior of the two purities suggesting that either silicon and potassium do not have a significant effect on the working properties of rhenium or they were lost during arc melting. SPECIMEN PREPARATION The cast structure was broken up by cold-rolling with inter-stage annealing at 1600o or 1800°C in a vacuum high-frequency furnace using a tungsten susceptor. Strip for tensile testing was taken from two thicknesses of material 0.011 and 0.064 in. The former with intermediate anneals at 1800°C had a grain size of 900 grains per sq mm, while the latter with inter-stage annealing at 1600°C had a grain size of 3600 grains per sq mm. A coarse grain size was obtained by secondary recrystallization in a half button cold-worked by 30 pct reduction. Annealing times of from half an hour to several hours at 2200° to 2600°C in a "gettered" argon atmosphere arc furnace1 resulted in grains of up to 2 mm diam.

INCREASED metal consumption throughout the world in the past three years has brought greater activity in the concentrators and mills that treat the ores.' Comparatively low prices have made greater economies necessary, with a continuing search for more efficient flow sheets, equipment, processes, and reagents. Comminution GRINDING has long been too ex- pensive and even any small increment of saving has been eagerly sought. Although not recently new the use of rod mills to cover the gap between intermediate crushing and coarse grinding has made further headway. They eliminate dusting and the closed- circuit operation of fine crushers, either roll or Symons cone, and the rod-mill product is suitable for secondary mills which can be operated with smaller balls and iron liners instead of coarse balls and steel liners. The newer practice is radically different from the older application of rod mills where they at- tempted to use them instead of ball mills for fine grinders. For that purpose they were not well adapted, as they do not have sufficient grinding surface available per cubic foot of mill volume.

In this paper, no attempt will be made to theorize on subsidence. Only known data and actual facts will be given, with a few exceptions noted where other factors and outside influences tend to change subsidence directly resulting from porphyry caving. The area under observation is known as the Southeast Extension of the East orebody. The orebody is irregular in outline and dips to the south and the east, extending in depth from about 425 ft. below the surface to 1050 ft. below the surface. In the upper horizon, the orebody is about 400 ft. long and 150 ft. wide. At 720 ft. below the surface, the ore outline is approximately 450 by 170 ft.; 70 ft. below this, it is 500 by 110 ft., with an extension at the north end to the east 270 by 120 ft. From this elevation to about 900 ft. below the surface, the ore spreads out to the cast and south, being about 700 by 500 ft. between these vertical limits. Below this it pinches out and at 1060 ft. below the surface is only 100 by 100 ft. The nearest point of the orebody—which is on the northwest side—is 600 ft. 'southeast of the Sacramento shaft. The country rock is all porphyry. Fig. 1 is a vertical east-west section showing orebody and original surface. The surface over the orebody was fairly regular and in this area and adjacent to it were portions of the surface plant, roads, and the main plant railroad to the concentrator. Fig. 2 is a map of the surface over the porphyry area. Caving operations started in April, 1925, at the approximate top of the orebody. The first lift was on the 600-ft. level; the ore was extracted by means of the Morenci timbered slide method and was from 425 to 455 ft. below the surface over an area of about 22,000 sq. ft. This lift was finished in May, 1926. The second lift, on the 650-ft. level, was already in production by May, 1926, so extraction of ore was continuous. This lift was 48 ft. high and covered an area of about 30,000 sq. ft. The ore from this lift was extracted by means of a modified Morenci timbered slide method. This lift was finished in March, 1927. INTRODUCTION For a number of reasons, the mineral processing industry has been slow to adopt significant automation of its processes. Most ore grinding operations can be operated manually so the pressure for automation to run the process has not been there. Furthermore, many plants had proven over years of operation that manual operation would produce a profit, so why automate? Until recently, the instrumentation necessary for automation of the grinding process was not available. All this has now changed, however. Increasing costs for labor, fuel, power, grinding media, reagants, and capital equipment have not been matched by the market price of the finished product. This cost-price squeeze has made it mandatory to reduce operating costs and improve the efficiency of the process to remain profitable. A number of other factors have added to the direct operating cost to make the problem even worse. These include environmental pressures to conserve natural resources and reduce smelter stack emissions; increased competition--especially from developing countries, varying economic conditions, stockpiling, governmental controls, and to top it all off, lower grade ore bodies. Although many of these other influences are good overall, they take their toll in cost per ton of delivered product. Fortunately, many operators are finding the solution to the cost-price squeeze in instrumentation and process control. Automated processes yield tighter spec. products, require less operating labor, produce more product from a given plant, and reduce unit cost by increasing process efficiency. The plant manager has a "handle" on the plant through process control so that he can change operating modes as economics dictate by changing the set point of some process controllers. He can even respond to economic conditions by switching control strategies from one that maximizes production to one that maximizes recovery, or minimizes unit cost, etc. This has all been made possible by the advent of on-line analytical instruments and practical process control computers. On-stream particle size (1), x-ray, and silica analyzers are now available and in use in many plants. Digital computer hardware and software has become practical so operators can use it without trying to become computer experts. THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. JIGGING is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward pulsations of water or in alternating upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through ¾ -in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0 and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and , flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems. Thus, it is an almost universal separating device. One might add that it has been one of the most misunderstood types of washers, from both a theoretical and a practical point of view. Although considerable progress has been made in coal jigging in the past 10 years, the jig probably has more unexplored possibilities than any other type of washer. In this chapter the object has been to treat the jigging process in a practical manner and to give information that will help the reader to improve his particular operation. Inasmuch as performance data from operating plants would contribute little of value, none has been given. Instead, the emphasis is upon jigging principles as a foundation for attacking the problems that arise. These principles are in reality tentative conclusions from research in the field of jigging during the past 10 years and most of this chapter should be regarded as a progress report on an investigation still under way. THE Exposed Treasure gold-mine has, for the past four years, been one of the largest producing mines of Southern California, its annual output having constituted 1 per cent of the total gold and silver production of the entire State. At the present moment the property is idle, owing to the large quantity of water encountered oil the lower levels, which will require the installation of a powerful pumping-plant before operations can be recommenced. Moreover, a prompt change in the character of the ore has occurred at water-level, which makes imperative an extensive campaign of development in the region of the unoxidized ores before a plant adapted to their treatment can be definitely decided upon. The character of the changes encountered in these deeper ores makes the geology of this deposit a matter of importance, not only for the immediate district, but for the desert region of Southern California in general, where many mines exist having in the oxidized belt conditions that, in many respects, resemble those in the Exposed Treasure mine. The deposit is situated in an apparently isolated butte about 2.5 miles south from the town of Mojave, on the Mojave desert; The butte, though apparently isolated, is in fact geologically part of an extinct volcano, known as Soledad butte, which rises out of the plain 1,5 miles SW. of the mine, to an altitude of 4,650 ft. above sea-level. Other buttes also rise from the desert plain toward the south and east, and again to the westward, all being closely related geologically to Soledad butte,-the whole constituting a single system as to origin and time. Sulfide capacities have also been measured at 165O0C for melts of MnO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2 + Al2O3, MgO + MnO + SiO2, and SiO2 + Al2O3 and for crystalline CaO. The activity coefficients of the sulfides of manganese and magnesium have been derived where possible. It looks as though the activity coefficients of sulfides are greatest at compositions where the free energies of formation of the silicate mixtures have their maximum negative values. The amphoteric nature of alumina is reflected in the results for the binaries and ternaries in which it is present with silica. The limiting solubility of CaS in CaO at 1650°C is 6.3 x 10-4 mole fraction. THE activities of manganese oxide have been measured in a variety of silicate and aluminate melts by use of the equilibrium (MnO)slag = [Mn]pt .½O2 [l] and the experimental techniques described previously.' Sulfide capacities (CS = wt pct S (PO2/PS2)½) have also been determined in a series of melts, by use of an established method2 which exploits the equilibrium (O°) + ½S2 = (S") . ½O2 [2] If CS and the activity of a metal oxide are known in a melt, the activity coefficient of the metal sulfide can be calculated by use of the equilibrium constant K, for the pure phase reaction MO i ½S2 = MS + ½O2 [3] The activity coefficient of the sulfide is then given by the equation

R. F. McELVENNY.- The next item is: "Center and other methods, vs. side charging." That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. E. A. BARNARD.- In fact, I think the calcine charge spreads more on the side than on the center charge. A. H. RICHARDS.- If you maintain a deep bath. E. A. BARNARD.- That is one thing we have to be careful about, to hold the charge back.

The distribution of manganese and oxygen between molten iron and FeO-MnO-SiO2 slags not saturated with SiO2 has been determined and used to calculate activities of MnO and SiO2 in MnO-SiO2 slags. These were found to be intermediate between the corresponding activities in FeO-SiO2 and CaO-SiO2 slags. THE equilibrium constant for the reaction between molten iron containing manganese and slags containing FeO and MnO, namely: FeO(slag) + Mn = MnO (slag) + Fe(1iquid) is most conveniently represented by: (MnO) Kmn== (FeOHMn] [Fe] is omitted, since for dilute solutions of manganese in iron, afe is approximately constant. When activities are used for (MnO), (FeO) and [Mn], Kmn is a true equilibrium constant and will apply to all types of slags, but when weight percentages are used, the values obtained for Kmn for different slags vary considerably. The equilibrium between iron containing manganese and relatively pure FeO-MnO slags has been investigated by several workers;1-4 the most recent investigation reported is that of Chipman, Gero, and Winkler.4 Their results, corresponding to slags containing up to 4 pct SiO2, were represented by the equation: 6440 log KMn = +2.95 In this case both slag and metal may be assumed to be ideal solutions, therefore the values of Kmn so derived represent the true constant for the manganese reaction. As the molecular weights of MnO and FeO are almost equal, weight concentration of these oxides may also be used in the above expression. Acidic oxides such as SiO2 and P2O5 affect the activities of FeO and MnO differently, so that when total concentrations by weight of FeO and MnO are used in the above expression for Kmn the values obtained are no longer constant. These will be denoted by K'mn. Körber and Oelsen5 investigated the manganese reaction using silica-saturated iron-manganese-silicate slags and found: 7940 logK'mn =3.172 This corresponds to Kmn values much higher than those obtained for pure oxide slags. The results of Körber and Oelsen, and Chipman, Gero, and Winkler are summarized in Table I. In the present investigation it was decided to study the manganese reaction using iron-manganese-silicate slags not saturated with silica, and which fell mainly between the orthosilicate join 2FeO . SiO2 - 2MnO.SiO2 and the FeO-MnO side of the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. It has been shown" that the phases present in solidified slags of this part of the diagram are (FeO, MnO) and (2Fe0.Si02, 2Mn0-SiO,) solid solutions. Such an investigation would be of interest in deoxidation and also gives information on activities in liquid slags. This equilibrium has not as yet been investigated successfully. Hilty and Crafts7 attempted to examine this reaction in a rotating crucible furnace, but were unable to obtain suitable slag samples. In the present investigation one series of experiments was carried out in a rotating crucible furnace, because the success of Taylor and Chipman8 with such a furnace in their study of oxygen distribution between molten iron and (CaO, MgO) — FeO-Si0, slags suggested that it would minimize contamination of the slag by the crucible material. A second series was carried out using a wire-wound resistance furnace. Rotating Crucible Furnace Experiments In all cases the metallic charge consisted of 800 to 1000 g Armco iron containing 0.02 pct C, 0.03 pct Mn, and traces of Si. A systematic study was made of new and old data on chemical activities in Fe-Pt alloys at elevated ternperatuves. Experimental results may be expressed in terms of the excess free energy using Least-squares analysis of the data gave the following values for the constants: for the temperature range 1130° to 1350°C, and tentatively to 155O°C, B = -3.326564 and C = 0.221051; for the temperature range 650" to 850°C, B = -2.555690, C = 1.762735, and D =0.097196. In the study of iron-containing silicate systems, it is sometimes desirable to have a direct experimental measure of the activity of iron in the system. The well-known solubility of iron in platinum, often a headache in experimental work on iron compounds under reducing conditions, can be used to advantage in this respect. If the activity of iron in an Fe-Pt alloy in equilibrium with the silicate is known as a function of the composition of the alloy, chemical analysis of the alloy will give a knowledge of the activity of iron in all of the phases in the system. The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the characteristics of Fe-Pt alloys as iron activity indicators. This work is intended to tie together some previous work, which may be summarized as follows. Larson and Chipman1 determined the activity of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with calcium oxide-iron oxide-silica melts of known iron activity. Compositions of the resulting alloys were determined by chemical analysis. A similar study was carried out by Taylor and ~uan,' who worked at 1300°C. They brought the Fe-Pt alloys into equilibrium with iron oxide under conditions of known partial pressure of oxygen, and thus, from the work of Darken and ~urr~,~ conditions of known iron activity. Compositions were determined indirectly, by following the change in weight of the sample. Sundaresen et el* used the electromotive force of cells in which the alloy formed one electrode in order to measure the activity of iron in the alloy at 650" and 850°C. These temperatures were chosen to be above and below the first-order phase transition which takes place upon the ordering of Fe3Pt and the second-order transition which occurs upon the ordering of FePt3. EXPERIMENTAL 1) High Temperatures. The starting materials used were thin platinum foil, about 0.002 mm thick, and Fisher Certified reagent ferric oxide, Fez03, which had been heated for 24 hr at 1000°C. An intimate mixture of 80-mesh Fez03 and platinum platelets was placed in a thin platinum foil envelope. The latter was suspended from thin platinum wires in the hot zone of a vertical-tube, platinum-wound furnace of the type described by Muan and ~sborn.~ A capillary gas mixer similar to that used by Darken and Gurry3 was used to prepare a precisely known mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, which was allowed to flow upward through the furnace tube. The partial pressure of oxygen in contact with the sample was thereby fixed at a value which was calculated from the charts prepared by porter? Temperatures were measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh-in-platinum thermocouple, which was calibrated using the melting points of gold (1062 .@C) and diopside, CaMgSizOB (1391.5"C). Temperature control was maintained to within i3"C with a Geophysical Laboratory proportional controller, using the furnace resistance as the sensing element. Samples were quenched by passing a small current through the platinum suspension wires, allowing the sample to drop into a bath of dibutyl phthalate at the bottom of the furnace tube. Prior to chemical analysis the samples were washed with acetone and dried. 2) Chemical Analysis. It proved possible, in almost all cases, to separate the Pt-Fe platelets physically from particles of iron oxide. The platelets were dissolved in a small volume of aqua regia, evaporated to dryness, and redissolved to 0.1 M HC1. In order to determine iron in the platinum alloy potentiometrically, it is necessary first to remove the platinum. A 10-cm column of Amberlite IR-120 cation exchange resin in the hydrogen form provided separation quickly and quantitatively: The mixture of iron and platinum in 0.1 M HC1 was added to the top of the column, and washed with about 100 ml of 0.1 M HC1. Under these conditions, the iron, principally in the form of cations such as FeC1" and FeCl;, is held quantitatively in the uppermost centimeter of the column. In the design of underground excavations, rock mechanics considerations are nearly always based on an elastic behavior of rock. Most rocks do exhibit a certain amount of elasticity, and the application of principles and concepts of elasticity to rock mechanics problems has been largely responsible for progress in the field over the past 10 or 15 years. No doubt the theory of elasticity will remain the most useful analytical tool available for both the design of underground openings and the interpretation of phenomenological data.

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

TANTALUM like several other metals exhibits a great affinity for or reactivity with certain gases. Tested in atmospheres which are not completely pure this metal becomes contaminated by certain impurities (notably nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen) with a resultant change in various properties. Well-known are the drastic changes in hardness, ductility, and electrical resistivity. Also previously recorded are the distortions of the lattice1,2 accompanying the increased content of oxygen and nitrogen in tantalum. This pronounced affinity for certain gases along with the significant property variations thereby produced makes it necessary to observe additional experimental precautions in making various property determinations with tantalum. Some recent measurements of the linear thermal-expansion characteristics of tantalum have made this point quite emphatically. Failure to observe the greatest precautions in reducing the contaminating influence has led to some extremely distorted results. Not only does such operation lead to different heating and cooling curves during the thermal-expansion measurements, but upon cooling to room temperature the sample is found to have suffered a permanent (actually semipermanent since the specimen can be returned to its original length by a 3-hr degassing treatment in vacuum at 2300°C) elongation. In addition, subsequent heatings will not follow the initial heating curve unless the expansion measurements are based on the actual specimen length at the beginning of the heating cycle. These thermal-expansion measurements were made by positioning the specimen horizontally at the longitudinal midpoint of a 20-in.-long, 4-in.-diam resistively heated tungsten tube furnace. The specimens were in the form of 20-mil sheet formed into a sharp U-shape about 0.3 in. in width and 0.3 in. in depth. Fiducial marks in the form of 0.010-in. holes drilled at either end of the 2.5-in.-long sheet specimens were viewed by a paired filar micrometer telescope system mounted on an Invar bar on the top of the furnace. Tests were made in helium with temperatures measured by a Pt/Pt-lORh thermocouple to 1000°C; above 1000°C temperature was measured by means of an optical pyrometer sighted into a black-body hole drilled into the specimen-holding fixture in the vicinity of the specimen. Previous tests with black-body holes drilled in a 0.25-in.-diam rod specimen had confirmed the temperature uniformity between specimens and specimen-holding fixture in this furnace. A typical thermal-expansion curve for arc-cast tantalum in helium is shown in Fig. 1 for the case where no attempt is made to remove all the impurities from the cover-gas atmosphere. The initial heating curve appears smooth and has a shape characteristic of all metals. However, it is known that the sample begins absorbing impurities at temperatures above 1000°C which are sufficient to distort the lattice and lead to specimen lengths which are somewhat larger than would be obtained in the absence of contamination. During the cooling cycle the expansion curve is seen to be significantly different from the heating curve. This is due to the impurity content causing a semipermanent (i.e., permanent until the impurities are removed by vacuum degassing) deformation which will not allow the speci-
