The system of stoping described in this paper was first introduced at the Champion mine of the Copper Range Co., Painesdale, Mich., in 1929, and since that time has been developed to a high state of efficiency. The method was devised to overcome some of the objections to the system of horizontal cut-and-fill stoping formerly employed at this mine and has done so successfully. The objections to the old system became more pronounced as the depth of mining operations increased and a change became a matter of necessity. While the combination of conditions encountered at the Champion mine is rather unusual, it is believed that the sublevel system developed there could be employed advantageously at other mines, though certain modifications might be necessary. This paper describes the method and the results obtained through its use, and suggests modifications for making it applicable under quite different conditions from those at the Champion mine. Champion Lode The lode being mined at the Champion mine is the heavily brecciated top of what is known in the district as the Baltic lava flow. The brecciated portion of the lode varies from 6 to 50 ft. in width. Under this breccia is the thinner, tighter, amygdular portion of the lode; under the amygdular portion is the trap footwall. Native copper is found deposited in the rock fragments of the breccia, in the cementing material of the breccia, in the amygdules and in the trappy rock under the amygdular part of the lode. In some places masses of copper many tons in weight extend far into the footwall of the lode. The Baltic lode on Champion property is 8000 ft. long, very straight along the strike, and dips uniformly 70' to the west for 3000 ft. in depth, at which point the dip begins to flatten slightly. The width of the copper-bearing portion of the lode varies from 10 ft. to as much as 80 ft. in a few places; the average width now mined is 17 ft. NEARLY 25 years ago operating officials in the northern anthracite field were confronted with the problem of profitably mining virgin beds of thin coal (those 48 in. and under) or destroying them by mining under-lying thick beds. To solve this problem costly hand-mining methods were replaced by cheaper mechanical methods, which eliminated the need for the lifting of bottom or the brushing of top in excessive quantities, which was essential if proper height for hand loading' was to be provided. During this period long-face mining was an outstanding development. In its favor in comparison with any other method were the ease with which undercutting machines could be used, a differential in powder cost of about fifteen cents per ton in favor of this method over mining from a solid chamber or pillar face, and a greater production per day from a single working place, resulting in lower capital expenditures for a given total production, closer supervision and lower transportation cost. The long faces were drilled by jackhammer and undercut by machines. The coal from the cut was loaded into mine cars placed on the gangway road by means of a double-drum mechanical scraper engine and a mechan-ical V-type scoop. A tugger hoist was used to spot empty cars at the loading point from a supply placed at the operation by an electric mine locomotive. During loading the roof was supported by vertical wooden props paralleling the face. After the loading was completed the scraper engine and the ropes that had been used to propel the scoop in the loading of coal transferred the props to and along the face. A row of unfilled cogs was then built parallel to the new face and about 6 ft. from it. These cogs were usually made 6 by 3 ft., the longer dimension paralleling the face; they were placed on an average at 12-ft. centers. These wooden cogs were left in place and were buried later by falling roof. Attempts to remove them were never successful. Lime, the "versatile chemical," is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or calcia, or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to much confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is usually made from high-calcium or high-magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high-calcium limes contain less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high-magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 A.D. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from a scientific perspective. The production of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 15 to 20 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the lime/limestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting in a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [CaCO3 (limestone) + heat (1000° to 1300°C)= 100 CaO (quicklime) + CO2 T 5644 or CaCO3 • MgCO3 (limestone) 10084 + heat (900°C to 1200°C) CaO • MgO (quicklime) + 2CO2 T 56 4088] While there is nearly universal agreement about the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in Fig. 1. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO2 pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the reaction interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Therefore, because calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in

Introductory.-There are many interesting and important events connected with the petroleum problem. The remarkable men who conceived the thought of transporting petroleum by pipe line, conserving the by-products of the commodity, and conducting extended investigation and research whereby the flash point of the oil was raised, its cost reduced and its Supply assured, are deserving of the gratitude of this nation. It was primarily the success attained by Captain Lucas, after his comprehensive search for oil in Texas and Louisiana, that was the impelling cause. which 'prompted the Navy Department to conduct the extensive series of liquid fuel-oil tests that were made from 1901 to 1903. The sensational discovery of oil at Spindle Top made a deep impression upon Rear Admiral George W. Melville, then Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy, and the discovery of the vast oil field in Texas convinced him that, within a generation, if not within a decade, crude petroleum was going to play a very important part in warfare, and that the commodity might possibly develop into a necessary munition of war. The United States' Commanding Position as a Petroleum Producer.¬ In the study of the various problems relating to the world's production of crude petroleum, the position of the United States is one of commanding importance, whether viewed from the industrial or the military aspect. The present yield of this country is practically double that of the rest of the world, and, in view of the productive and prospective fields possessed by various countries, together with the comprehensive and exhaustive search that has been made throughout the world for petroleum, it is extremely probable that this lead will be maintained for the next decade. As regards the character of the crude-oil yield of different countries, America possesses the greater part of the supply that contains a paraffine base, and therefore a considerable portion at least of the American product produces the best illuminant. Of all the crude-oil distillates, kerosene is in many respects the most important, and the Appalachian product for this purpose is favored, particularly in the Far East, above that of any other petroleum yield of the world.

The effect of transition element binary solid solution additions upon the re crystallization temperature of nickel has been investigated. All additions raised the re crystallization temperature. Both the rate of change of re crystallization temperature with at. pet solute and the limit of initial linearity are found to correlate with the free atom ground state outer electron configuration of the solute element. A comparison of all of the correlations for the transition elements studied has yielded a set of empirical relations, which allows the prediction of the effect of dilute binary transition elements on the recrystallization temperature of other transition elements. The work of Abrahamson, et al.1-7 on dilute binary solution alloys indicated a correlation between the free atom ground state electron configuration of the solute and both the brittle-ductile transition and re-crystallization temperature. Further, it has been shown3,4 that the limit of initial linearity may also be correlated with the solute electron configuration. Since previous studies have dealt with bee and hexagonal base elements, this study is made to note what effect, if any, the fee base structure might have. Nickel also serves to give a solvent configuration which will allow the comparison of all of the transition element solvents. Olsen8 has studied the effect of some trace elements upon the recrystallization of nickel. He included only Ti, Zr, W, Mn, and Co of the transition elements. The differences in change of recrystallization temperature were attributed to the solute atom size and to the solubility of the solute in nickel. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.9 + pet Ni with 0.003 C, 0.015 Fe, 0.007 0, and 0.0007 H. The solute elements were 99.9 + pet pure. According to the published binary phase diagrams9 and metallo-graphic examinations at X750, all solute elements were in solid solution. The alloys were arc melted and remelted four times in the form of cubic 200-g buttons under an argon atmosphere. They were then hot forged at 800oC to 0.750 in. diam, machined to 0.60 in., vacuum annealed for 1 hr at 700°c, swaged to 0.40 in. and annealed at 700oC for 1 hr in vacuum. The grain size was checked and found to be 77 * 20 grains per sq mm. The specimens were then swaged to 0.187 in., yielding 76 ± 1 pet cold work. All alloys were then chemically analyzed for the solute addition. The interstitial contents remained at the values of the starting material when checked on random alloy specimens. The swaged rod was cut into 8.25 in. lengths and heat treated in a gradient furnace for 1 hr. The gradient was maintained at 250" to 850°C over an eight inch length, recorded by twelve thermocouples. Control was ± 3oC, accomplished at the hot end. The recrystallization was determined metallo-graphically over the entire specimen. The criterion chosen was that point on the specimen showing the first recrystallized grain at a constant magnification, X200. Specimens were repeated, and the agreement was found to be generally ± 3oC.

Advancement in engineering in the refining industry during 1933 might be likened to the jagged flame of a poor wick-test kerosene—a few outstanding high spots, but not broadly spectacular. Economic conditions were unsatisfactory for the first six or eight months, but the improvement in the latter part of the year had some immediate effect in stimulating new designing and building. The national legislative program involving the industry drew the attention of executives away from petroleum technology to some extent. The National Recovery Act, and its offspring, the Petroleum Code, demanded deep and continued study to put the machinery into smooth motion. From a purely technical engineering stand, therefore, the emergency measures might be considered a temporary brake on progress. The ultimate effect, if the whole industry can get back "out of the red," may well be a more than expected advance. Of course, petroleum technologists and engineers, including both those engaged within and those busy in designing and building for the industry, continued their efforts, and much of the results of their work will undoubtedly see the light of day under the improved economic conditions, which bid fair to stay with us. There was little improvement during 1933 in atmospheric distillation, sweetening processes, or furnace design, but experimentation during the year on these subjects may materialize into distinct advances. The trend toward compact distilling and fractionating equipment, especially in the Appalachian district, deserves noting. A number of refineries in that district replaced obsolete shell still units with up-to-date tube stills and efficient fractionating towers, both for the better separation of lubricating fractions from the crude and for improving the boiling range of the gasoline. A number of small skimming and topping plants in flush fields, such as East Texas, which felt the pinch of production control, were forced to shut down, but the stronger among them are consolidating their positions by installing cracking equipment and in some cases more modern crude-distillation units. The c axis indentations in zinc crystals were shown to undergo 100 pct strain recovery on heating. The mode of deformation and the details of the polygonization and collapse of indentations were found to be consistent with a number of predictions of dislocation theory. IT has been observed that indentations of the type made by Jillson in zinc crystals can, under certain conditions, be macle to shrink in size and even completely disappear on heating the crystal, Fig. 1. The details of the process are interesting in that they afford a simple experimental illustration of several predictions of dislocation theory. The indentations were made as shown in Fig. 2 by dropping a 0.2 g indenter with a hemispherical point on a cleavage face of a. zinc crystal. Such indentations can be made through relatively great thicknesses in the c-axis direction. The material close to the struck surface, where mechanical twinning and complex distortion occurred, was removed by cleavage. The remaining crystal, which was about 1 cm thick, contained a dent that was accurately round and almost the same size on both top and bottom surfaces. The indentation had the form of a flat cone of half angle approximately 89°, having a rounded apex and a rounded intersection with the unde-formed part of the crystal. The mode of deformation was primarily slip on the three equivalent systems in the basal plane. Six types of dislocation loop (plus and minus in each of the three directions) as shown in Fig. 3 are required by the geometry of the indentation. The maximum shear strain in the radial direction amounted to approximately 2.5 pct. Slip was distributed in the usual, microscopically nonuniform, manner among the possible parallel slip planes. When an indentation was made close to a (2110) surface, three separate sets of interpenetrating slip bands appeared as shown schematically in Fig. 3. A small biaxial tension strain in the plane of (0001) is also a geometrical necessity for the formation of an indentation. IN THE changed circumstances which now confront the world, an international open-door policy is the only way to keep pace with the world's demand for oil. You may rest assured that as far as the British Empire is concerned, American capital for the develop-ment of oil resources is welcome, and little obstruction will be found in the way to permit the use of foreign capital in the group of countries which constitute the British Empire. In the war days we worked in close cooperation and harmony, but in disbandment of the Petroleum War Service Committee, when the war ended, I feel that it left its task unfinished. In the wake of war there appeared a ghost of war-time conditions in the form of belief that Great Britain was straining to corner the petroleum resources of the world. I am certain that if the war-service committee had continued its work in the period of reconstruction the real story would be known and this sinister ghost would have long since vanished before the truth.
