THE Dust Symposium was attended by approximately 100 persons, nearly all of whom remained from the starting hour (2 p. m.) until the use of the auditorium was demanded for another meeting at 5:30 p. in. In calling the meeting to order, D. Harrington made a few remarks as to the importance of the health dust problem in mining as well as in general industry and expressed gratification that the subject is now out in the open and that mining people are desirous of ascertaining the facts. B. F. Tillson acted as chairman of the meeting. The milling executive who desires to know what to do to prevent his workers from being unduly exposed to the dust hazard can get much out of the paper by D. E. Cummings, who has been doing much work in mines trying to keep -the dust in the air within safe limits. His recommendations indicate that the main protection of the worker in mines is by adequate ventilation, supplemented by the extensive use of water in drilling, as well as in water curtaining to condition air both in regard to dust content and to temperatures. Blasting was shown to be one of the chief causes for dust and it was recommended that whenever feasible all blasting should be delayed to the end of the working shift.

THE art of natural-gas compressing is now over 25 years old, and has grown at practically the same rate as the increase in domestic natural-gas consumers. There are now over 200 natural-gas compressing stations in North America, aggregating more than 320,000 hp. of compressor capacity and representing a property value of more than $22,000,000, and compressing more than 85 per cent. of all the gas used. The age and magnitude of the art make it evident that the use of gas compressors is a recognized integral part and universal custom of the natural-gas business. The public also is not without its rights and vital interests in this problem. Approximately 1,700,000 domestic natural-gas consumers in North America are dependent upon gas compressors for their natural-gas service. That is, if the use of compressors were to be prohibited, the majority of these consumers would be unable to secure adequate natural-gas service. Each consumer represents between four and five persons, and it therefore follows that the comfort and well-being-as far as natural-gas service is concerned-of at least 8,000,000 persons would be affected if the use of natural-gas compressors should be prohibited. These 1,700,000 consumers have invested, in services, house piping, fixtures, and appliances, an average of about $90 each, or an aggregate of $153,000,000, which is much more than the companies' investment in gas compressors. Furthermore, in all cases where the rate paid by the consumers is fair to the gas company-considering the value of the service rendered by the gas company-the consumers are entitled to continued service and protection of the investment they have made on the faith that the gas service would be continued in the future.

AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER and in greater or less amounts, gold has been mined in at least 40 of California's 58 counties. It may not be inappropriate, by way of introduction, to give a brief historical statement relative to her production of the yellow metal. The presence of gold in the gravels of San Gabriel, San Francisquito, and other streams near Los Angeles, was known and they were worked in a small way by the Indians, at least as early as. 1841' and possibly 1820. -On March 2, 1844, Don Manuel Castanares, deputy for California to the Congress of Mexico, reported' to his government that placers near Los Angeles had yielded up to December, 1.843, a total of 2000 oz. of gold dust, most of which had been sent (via Mexico) to tile United States Mint at Philadelphia.

In the uniform of his country for the second time, Harry Phillip Stolz. Chairman of the A.I.M.E. Petroleum Division, holds a commission as Lieutenant-Commander in the Naval Reserve and is attached to the office of Inspector of Naval Petroleum Reserves in California. During World War I he left his studies at Stanford University to join the Army and was granted a commission as Second Lieutenant of Infantry. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1938 when he resigned to accept a commission as a member of the Naval Petroleum Reserves Advisory Board. Born in San Francisco Jan. 29,1899, where his father had lived since 1880, he was in that city during the turbulent year of 1906 where the city was ravaged by fire and earthquake.

THE COAL DIVISION started its share of the annual meeting Monday morning with a study of coal classi fication. A. C. Fieldner was in the chair. The report of the tellers of the ballot for division chairman, stating that Thomas G. Fear had been elected to that office, was read by M. D. Cooper. Mr. Fear acknowledged the honor in a few words. In reviewing the history of the Coal Classification Committee the chairman pointed out that this was its third symposium, the last previous one having been held at the 1930 Annual Meeting. Throughout its work the com¬mittee has had the active cooperation of the Canadian workers who are interested in the subject which should result in a uniform scheme of classification in Canada and the United States. F. E. Lathe, of the National Research Council, Ottawa, abstracted the first two papers of the session entitled "Determination of the Alkali-Soluble Ulmins in Coal," by Edgar Stansfield and K. C. Gilbart, and "Moisture Determination for Coal Classification," by the same authors. The third paper "Condition of Water in Coals of Various Ranks"' was presented by its author, A. W. Gauger. Written discussions of these papers were presented by H. C. Porter and Gilbert H. Cady. In the oral discussion which followed, W. T. Thom, Jr., brought out the advisability of considering age as a factor in classification. Mr. Fieldner favored retaining bed moisture as a partial classification basis, stating that a review of many coal analyses revealed a remarkable consistency in this item in samples from a given mine particularly where the moisture content was not high. Mr. Porter pointed out that the structure and porosity of coal often have much to do with its moisture content and that these vary in different parts of a seam, particularly in anthracite. Mr. Gauger expressed doubt as to whether the Stansfield method gives the true moisture content of coal, which is needed for classification purposes.

The yttrium-manganese system has been investigated by thermal, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction methods. There are three intermetallic compounds present: YMn2 which melts congruently, YMn4, which undergoes syntectic decomposition, and YMn,, which undergoes peritectic decomposition. The compound YMn4 is ferromagnetic at room temperature with a Curie temperature of 214°C. There are eutectics at 25.2, 60.9, and 82.0 wt pct Mn which melt at 878°, 1100°, and 1075°C, respectively. Crys-tallographic data are given for YMn4, and YMn12 . The terminal solid solubilities are low. In a general program of study of yttrium metal in this laboratory some alloy systems of this metal with elements of the first transition period have been examined. This work was originally instigated by experiences in cladding yttrium with jackets of some protective metals such as Inconel for high-temperature service in air.' In some cases a low-melting phase was observed to form between the Inconel and the yttrium resulting in failure of the samples. In characterizing this reaction, a survey was made of the systems of yttrium with chromium, manganese, iron and nickel,, and it was found that a eutectic was formed between these metals and yttrium on the yttrium-rich side of the system. This present study of the Y-Mn system was carried out to examine in more detail the alloying nature of yttrium, and to correlate trends that have been observed in previous related studies. It was observed by Voge13 that in the systems of lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium with each of the metals in the first transition series, the tendency to form compounds diminished in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds were formed with manganese, chromium, or titanium. Beaudry and Daane4 observed a similar behavior in the systems of yttrium with some members of the first transition series except that the tendency for compound formation was greater. Both the Y-Ti5 and Y-Cra systems consist of simple eutectics, while in the Y-Fe,7 Y-CO, and Y-Ni4 systems, there are four, eight, and nine compounds, respectively. In addition to the above trends, the similar atomic radii and electronegativities of yttrium and thorium invite a comparison between their alloying behaviors with a common element such as manganese. In crys- tallographic studies, Florio et al.' have identified three intermediate phases in this system which are ThMn2, Th6Mn23, and ThMn,,. Gschneidner and Waber10 have examined published information on alloy systems of the rare-earth metals and have correlated this information with current alloying theory. From their study, they predicted that the Y-Mn system would contain one intermetallic compound. On the basis of this prediction, the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium with the elements of the first transition series and the alloying behavior of thorium with manganese, one might expect from one to three intermetallic compounds to form in the Y-Mn system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size-factor, electronegativity, and valency suggested a small terminal solubility and possible compound formation. The present study was undertaken to confirm these predictions of low terminal solid solubility and compound formation and to establish the general alloying behavior of yttrium with manganese. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The manganese used in this investigation was obtained from the Foote Mineral Co. as electrolytic plates of 99.9 pct stated purity; the yttrium metal was prepared in this laboratory. Table I gives the analyses of these materials. For the solubility studies at the yttrium-rich end of the alloy system, distilled yttrium, whose major impurity was 200 ppm Ti, was used. Preparation of Alloys. The alloys were formed by comelting the two metals in an are-melting furnace under an atmosphere of argon. The buttons thus formed were inverted and remelted three to five times to promote homogeneity. Due to the high vapor pressure of manganese, it was assumed that the weight lost during are-melting was all manganese. This assumption was based on the very good agreement observed between calculated compositions and chemical analyses of several alloys. The compositions of the dilute alloys used for solid solu-

DgIel-ential thermal, nretallographic, and X-ray paramzetric methods were used to establish the Yb-Pb phase dingram. The terminal solid solubilities in the system are less than 0.2 at. pct. Lead additions lower the 792°C transformation tewzperature of pure ytterbiun~ at 787°C by means of an inverted peritectic veaction. Ytterbium additions raise the 327oC melting point of lead to 329°C by means of a perilectic reaction. Three intermetallic compounds Yb2Pb, YbPb, and YbPb, melt congruerttly at 1246", 1116o, and 740°C. respectively. YbsPb3 forms by a peritectic reacliorz at 1250°C. YbzPb crystallizes in the PbCh (C23) type structure and the orthorhombic latliceo constants are a, = 7.478. bo = 5.225, aud C0 = 9.549A. YbsPbs crystallizes in the hfnsSi3 (D8a) type structure. The hexa~nal lattice constants for this phase are a, = 9.325 and co = 6.92d. YbPbl crystallizes in the cubic AuCU3 (Ll2) type structure with a: = 4.8628 + 0.0008A. YbPb is diwrorphic with the structure change occurring al 507°C upon healing. The crystal structures of the two forttzs were not determined. Eulectic reactions occur at 5.1 at. pct Pb and 769oC, 41.5 at. pct Pb and 1086oC, and G8.0 at. pct Ph and 717°C: RELIABLE information concerning the alloying behavior of most of the rare-earth metals is scarce. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems now in progress is an effort to supply such information. Determination of the phase diagram of the Yb-Pb alloys is the first step of this study. Variations in the valence of normally divalent ytterbium may be studied by comparing the characteristics of the Yb-Pb alloys to those of the trivalent rare earth-lead and of the divalent alkaline-earth-lead systems. Of particular interest are the melting temperatures of the intermetal-lic compounds since these are known to be high relative to the melting points of the constituent metals. Crys-tallographic and magnetic susceptibility data for the rare earth-lead alloys are to be included in the comparative study. Results from this and subsequent investigations should provide a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The major impurities in the ytterbium and lead used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The lead was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. The ytterbium was prepared in this laboratory by the lanthanum reduction of the oxide followed by a distillation of the ytterbium. Alloy Preparation. The alloys were prepared by

The flotability of crushed zinc oxide pellets which were doped to produce more n-type or less n-type (more p-type) properties was studied with a Halli-mond tube. Flotation data are presented to show that the pH at which 50% recovery occurs and the collector concentration for 50% recovery depends upon the concentration of doping agent added substitu-tionally for zinc in zinc oxide. The time of sintering of pellets has a slight effect on flotation behavior. A speculative model is proposed to explain the observed behavior in light of the fact that zinc oxide is a semiconductor and has a space charge region at the surface. Experimental verification is necessary before the proposed model can be established as correct. In recent years, the attachment of flotation reagents to minerals has been shown to depend upon the behavior of an electrical double layer which exists in the liquid near the mineral-liquid interface.' Thus, a mineral placed in water will undergo a surface re-arrangement, most likely be preferential dissociation of lattice atoms or by surface adsorp-tion-desorption reactions, to form a dissociation electrical double layer with the solution. Among the many factors which influence adsorption processes, the past history of the mineral itself is one of the most important. Because of trace impurities, minerals from different localities may exhibit marked differences in flotation behavior. This is not unexpected, since investigators who have studied the detailed structure of the double layer's3 have known for some time that the impurity content of many minerals may exert strong influence on double layer variables. For this reason, their studies were usually made with minerals of high purity. The precise relationship between impurities in a mineral and double layer parameters such as capacity and electrostatic potential has been obscure. However, impurities in a semiconductor type mineral which is in contact with a solution have been recently shown to produce changes in the properties of a space charge layer which extends into the bulk of the semiconductor to a distance of one micron or more.4 The double layer is influenced by the space charge layer, whose origin is best discussed in terms of the band theory of solids. A qualitative description of the behavior of impurities in the bulk of a semiconductor, from a chemical point of view, is useful at this point. Briefly, impurities or defects (lattice vacancies, interstitials, etc.) in semiconductors such as PbS, ZnS, FeS2, Cu2S, NiS, NiO, Fe2O3, ZnO, CdS, MnO2 and many others, behave somewhat like acids or bases in water. Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.

Engineers and masters of enterprise are waking fast to the realization that there is something more in the relations of employer and employee than mechanical output, which can be measured mathematically, and that the human side of service must receive greater consideration for the future. So much has been said and written on this subject that it has passed into a truism. Should not the same element, long neglected, be considered as of even greater importance than questions of "administration and membership, in the plans of engineering societies? Should mutual service and interest end with mere technical output by members and the rendering of care and management by officers? The world is recognizing, as never before, obligations for service to fellowmen clue from all, high or low, in rank or wealth. Our technical societies, organized for professional protection and advancement, are, insensibly to themselves, almost without conscious intent, widening their field of service to members and dealing heartily with questions broader than technique. Those who are doing such service find unconsciously more and more satisfaction in work so rendered. The growth of knowledge that comes to subaltern engineers or veterans by converse and contact with their fellows, working along and versed in the same subjects, brings interest and friendship. In this way are built some of the warmest friendships of life, coming as incidental and pleasurable result of meetings undertaken for other purposes. Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

The Southwest Virginia Improvement Company began operations in the Bluestone Flat-Top coal-field, situated in Tazewell County, Virginia, in the fall of 1881. In May, 1883, the company had built 200 coke-ovens, and by March, 188-1, had 9000 feet of entries, exclusive of air-ways, in the Nelson or Rig coal-bed of this district (which here averages eleven feet in thickness), and had extracted 200,000 tons of coal, representing an area of about twenty acres. About this opening has grown the recently incorporated city of Pocahontas, and the completion of the New River branch of the Norfolk and Western Railroad to this point enabled the company to make large contracts for supplying coal and coke, so that it was deemed necessary, on account of the limited area developed, to work the mine day and night to fill orders. At 1.30 Thursday morning, March 13th, the inhabitants of Pocahontas were awakened by a violent shock, and within a few minutes all knew that the East mine had been the scene of an explosion of so general a nature that, of the 114 men at work, not one had escaped. The daily papers gave more or less distorted accounts of the number of victims, the scenes in and about, the mine, and the probable cause of the disaster. At the request of the company, the President of the American Institute of Mining Engineers appointed the undersigned a committee of three to investigate the matter, and the committee thus constituted presents the following report, accompanied by a copy of the testimony taken daring the investigation, for preservation in the archives of the Institute. Pocahontas was reached on Thursday, April 24th, and left on Friday, May 2d. During this interval the committee made repeated visits to the mine, especially to the points, of most importance, examining it carefully in every part; and summoned a number of witnesses, twenty-six of whom appeared and testified. ALTHOUGH it is universally accepted that free oxygen is A necessary in a cyanide solution for the dissolution of gold and silver-in accordance with Elsner's equation that 2Au + 4KCN + 0 + H20 = 2KAu (CN), + 2KOH- little has been written and insufficient attention paid to the drop in extraction due apparently to loss of dissolved oxygen in mill solutions. Aeration or oxygenation of cyanide solutions has been more or less successfully accomplished by various types of agitators such as the Dorr (with or without air lifts), Pachuca tanks and more recently "Turbo-mixers" and Denver "Super- agitators"; also by the introduction of chemical oxidizing agents such as Solozone (Na,O,) . At the Wright-Hargreaves and other mines in the Kirkland Lake camp, the introduction of this reagent at the rate of about 1.25 oz. per ton of ore applied to the feed of the ball mills has certainly been beneficial.

Experimental evidence was obtained in support of the idea that cleavage fracture can be initiated by dislocation pile-up. The high ductility of MgO crystals when tested in bending comPared to their relative brittleness in tension was explained on the basis that large pile-ups are more likely in a tension specimen. CLEAVAGE fractures have been a problem of major concern for many years. A number of large steel structures have failed in a brittle manner, usually suddenly and without warning; often the failures occurred for no obvious reason and at nominal stress levels well within the generally accepted range. A great deal of data have been collected about factors that contribute to failures,1 but the physics of the fracture process has never been revealed. cottrel12 has recently developed a theory of brittle fracture in ductile materials which was based upon the concept that dislocations moving on two intersecting planes can unite to form a crack nucleus. This theory accounts for the known effect of grain size and for the effect of testing temperature. There has, as yet, been no experimental evidence published that would substantiate this or the earlier theories based on stress concentrations due to piled-up dislocations. The Choctaw coal-field is a direct westward extension of the Arkansas coal-field, but its coals are not like Arkansas coals, except in the country immediately adjoining the Arkansas line. From the base of the coal-bearing rocks up to the top of the coalmeasures, I find a total thickness of at least 8500 feet. This great mass of coal-bearing rocks consists of an alternation of slates, shales, sandstones and coal-beds, with their accompanying under-beds of fire-clay. Only one small bed of limestone was observed. This occurs near the middle of the series; it is about eighteen inches thick, and quite arenaceous. The formation is naturally subdivided by seven or eight thick beds of sandstone, varying from 50 to 200 feet in thickness, the outcropping edges of which form a series of more or less bold " hogback " ridges, the interbedded shales and slate forming the intervening valleys. The base of the coal-series is a massive sandstone, ranging from 100 to 200 feet or more in thickness, lying immediately beneath the Grady coal-bed, which is the lowest known coal. In the district embraced between. the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad and the Arkansas State line, this sand-rock usually forms a bold semi-mountainous ridge. This is the ridge through which the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad passes at Bryan station, where the Grady coal-bed is opened and worked, from which point it can be traced westward without difficulty, passing about three miles north of Le Flor on the same railroad, thence west to the " Little Narrows " (which is merely a gap in the ridge), 'and beyond to a point two miles west of the Thompson-McKinney place, where it swings abruptly north for a mile or more, only to resume immediately its westward course, forming for some miles the northern boundary of the valley known as the " Boiling-Springs Prairie," beyond which it trends somewhat

THE Washington magnesite deposits, located in the hilly and mountainous northeastern part of Washington, occur as massive lenses in a sedimentary series made up of dolomite, shale, and quartzite, into which basic dikes have intruded. The ore pattern resembles a series of disconnected chain links extending approximately 25 miles in a south-west direction. Magnesite in this district is all crystalline and closely associated with dolomite, talc, serpentine, and basic dike rock. All deposits which have been developed are near the surface so that quarry-bench mining has been possible. For over twenty years hand sorting magnesite ore at the quarry face was standard practice. Ore cars were hand trammed on 30-lb rail systems which led from the face to ore passes or raises for the magnesite ore and to the waste dumps for disposal of the rejected waste material. This system was somewhat modified by the use of Dempster Dumpster trucks. The ore was, however, still sorted by hand from the calcium and silica bearing waste rock. THERE has been very little, if any, uniformity in the reference datum used for magnetometer surveys. It has been the practice to choose a base station at which the magnetic field is assumed to be normal and call the difference in field strength between a given station and this base the anomaly at the given station. For small-scale surveys latitude and longitude corrections may or may not be applied, but for large-scale surveys such corrections usually are applied. The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey maps showing lines of equal magnetic intensity are commonly used to determine the normal latitude and longitude variation by scaling values from the map for given points and computing the change per mile north and the change per mile east. This method has been quite satisfactory for isolated surveys, but when two surveys originating at different base stations were extended until they joined, difficulty arose, not only because of discrepancies between base-station values, but also because of differences between the latitude and longitude correction factors used for the separate surveys. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a reference datum for magnetometer surveys which, it is believed, will eliminate most of the difficulty arising from this source. In order to be satisfactory, a general datum for magnetometer sur-veys should be as close as possible to the observed field and still he based on some assumed distribution of magnet poles, in order that the "normal" value of any component of the field for any given point may be computed to as many significant figures as desired. Such a field has been com-puted, and a comparison of the intensity of its vertical component with the average vertical intensity for the United States as shown by the U.S.C.G.S. map of lines of equal intensity for 1935 is shown in Fig. 1.
