The Greenawalt electrolytic copper extraction process is applicable to suitable oxide ores, sulfide ores and concentrates, and low-grade matte. The process is self-sustaining in acid on sulfide ores or concentrates, on mixed ores, on high-grade oxidized ores; and on low-grade oxidized ores the amount of acid to be purchased or manufactured is greatly reduced. The ferric iron is under easy control, and copper may be effectively deposited from solutions of any acid or iron content likely to be used in copper leaching. From 60 to 75 per cent. of the copper may be removed from the solution in passing through the electrolytic department, before returning the solution to the ore. The amount of copper requiring chemical precipitation, from the waste and foul solutions, is only about 5.0 per cent, of the total copper produced, and this 5.0 per cent. is converted into the electrolytic metal in the regular operation of the process. The entire process can be made practically automatic, and can be carried out mechanically. There is no uncertain departure of any kind in the application of the process; no unusual or unproved apparatus is used. EVER since electrolytic copper refining gave promise of success, about a half century ago, efforts have been made to apply the idea to the extraction of copper from its ores. The methods of attack have, usually, been to leach with a dilute acid and then to deposit electrolytically the copper from the resulting solution with the simultaneous regeneration of the solvent used in the process. Many efforts have been made, and many patents have been taken out, both in the United States and abroad, to give this idea practical application, but only within the past few years have the difficulties been surmounted. Leaching and electrolysis, as applied to copper ores, are among the most promising fields in modern metallurgy. New conditions are arising, which will bring the wet methods into prominence; while high freight rates and increasing cost of fuel will tend to limit smelting to highly favored localities. The possibilities offered by the installation of hydro-electric plants and the greatly enlarged range of power transmission will greatly widen the field of electrolytic methods.

During the year 1945, the drilling pace in West Texas increased above that in the year 1944, and represented the highest number of well completions since 2941. The 1680 new wells drilled 8,287,958 ft. of hole for a per well average of 4933 ft. This depth is approximately 30o. ft. deeper than the average for the year 1944. Although the deepest well drilled in West Texas (Phillips Petroleum Company's Ada Price No. 1, in Pecos County) was completed during the year. 1944 to a depth of 15,279 ft. and tested the Ellen-burger horizon, the producing depth record for West Texas was set during the year 1945 with the completion of Amerada Petroleum Corporation's Jones No. I-A, in the Jones Ranch field, Gaines County, which now is producing at 11,422 ft. from the Devonian formation.

Liquidus surfaces in the ternary system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2, were determined from 1250' to 1450°C by the procedure of equilibrating small samples in platinum crucibles, quenching, and microscopic examination. The experimental results were combined with previously published information to construct a ternary diagram for the system showing the entire temperature-composition range of stability of iron silicate slags. Metallurgical applications of the diagram, especially in copper smelting, are discussed briefly. IRON oxides are almost unique among the common oxide constituents of metallurgical slags in that the iron occurs in two different states of oxidation, ferrous and ferric. Moreover, in liquid slags the degree of oxidation of the iron is readily changed by reactions of the slags with oxidizing agents or reducing agents. This behavior of iron oxides in slags accounts, for example, for the effective transfer of large quantities of oxygen through slag layers in open hearth steelmaking. In this process, oxygen supplied by reactions at the gas-slag interface is dissolved in the slag with the oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric. Ferric oxide is transported across the slag layer by convection, and at the slag-metal interface the oxygen reacts with liquid metal while the ferric iron is reduced back to the ferrous state. Another group of processes in which variation in degree of oxidation of iron has great practical importance is in copper smelting. In matte smelting and converting, such large proportions of the iron are oxidized to the ferric state that problems are encountered in preventing or controlling the formation of solid magnetite. The ferrous-ferric relationship also affects the attack of iron oxides on high-SiO2 refractories, which appears to be most severe under reducing conditions for which ferrous iron predominates. Darken and Gurry' determined the chemical properties and phase equilibria of pure iron oxide slags. Their data show that iron oxide melts can have compositions ranging almost all the way from FeO to Fe2O3. The melts of lowest oxygen contents, which exist in equilibrium with metallic iron, approach ferrous oxide in composition but still have a small percentage of ferric oxide. The melts of highest oxygen contents, which have oxygen dissociation pressures of 1 atm, are above magnetite in oxygen content, with over two-thirds of the iron in the ferric state. The previously established phase diagrams for silicate slag systems all show FeO as the iron oxide component. However, Bowen and Schairer? who determined the FeO-SiO2 diagram and many of the other diagrams used by slag chemists, have been careful to point out that their systems always contained both ferrous and ferric iron. Thus, their data are for limiting mixtures with minimum contents of ferric iron, obtained by melting and equilibration in iron crucibles. Under these conditions, the Fe2O3 percentages found by analysis were small enough to justify simplification of the published phase diagrams by calculating the Fe2O3 to equivalent FeO and ignoring Fe2O3 as an additional component. On the basis of experimental measurements of melting points of iron oxides on silica in the presence of various gas mixtures, Darken3 worked out phase diagrams for the Fe-Si-0 system which show the important phase equilibria in terms of temperature and gas composition. THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.

[ ] Professor Hibbard's paper presents a very interesting theory concerning the influence of texture on the tendency of brass tube to stress-corrosion crack. I should like to present the result of some work done in 1941 which may throw further light on the subject. In the first place, in regard to his review of the influences of grain boundaries, we not only confirmed the findings which he quoted, but also were unable to crack single crystals of beta brass in the standard mercurous nitrate test in 50 hr under loads up to 18,500 psi. Samples containing two or more crystals of beta brass always cracked at grain boundaries and generally followed the same pattern as for alpha brass, although cracking occurred sooner than in alpha brass under the same conditions. Such a specimen is shown in Fig 4. Second, at the possible risk of repetition, we should like to call attention to the reported role of grain size as influencing the tendency to stress-corrosion crack. This phenomenon, originally mentioned by Dr. Allan Morris in the Transactions, AIME, 1931, is illustrated in Fig 5, showing the effect of variations in grain size on the tendency of drawn brass wires to crack under load in the mercurous nitrate solution. HERACLITUS, a sage of antiquity, called the dark philosopher, who refused a throne, preferring a hermit's cell, propounded, twenty-four centuries since, the maxim : [ ] War (or strife) engenders all things. This, though probably intended by Heraclitus to apply especially to the internal forces of nature, is often said, with equal reason, of the affairs of men. Controversial strife, whether fortunately or unfortunately, is a crucible through which all new discoveries in science, and all technical applications of science must pass-a test which they must all endure before they can become so vitalized as to germinate, so to speak, take root in the human mind, grow tip, and overspread the earth. The greater the number and the power of the elements arrayed against such a growth, and of the influences hostile thereto, the greater should be the inherent vitality of the germ, the more strenuous, skilful, and persistent its cultivators and upholders. During the decade last past we have had, in spite of the severe stringency of the times, an active growth of this kind in progress, whose prospective importance it would now be difficult to overrate. This is the movement which has for its motive the idea that, generally speaking, fuel should be gaseous in form, and which has for its goal the introduction into general public use of gaseous products, made by cheap and rapid processes and on a gigantic scale, distributed throughout our cities and towns in distribution-systems which shall be proportionately gigantic, and sold at prices which will bring such fuel within the means of the poorest householders. Personally, for ten years past, the writer has never failed, on occasions public or private, to urge his belief that the realization of this idea, deemed by him a certainty of the future, will bring about

10.1-1. Relative Position of Maintenance as Compared to the Overall Mining Costs. The basic issue regarding the importance of maintenance in the modern mining industry must be faced squarely by the top manage- ment of each company before any real progress can be made in organizing a maintenance program for optimum effectiveness. Just a few decades ago the maintenance at coal mines consisted primarily of a blacksmith for sharpening picks and shoeing mules; as a result, probably less than 5%of the total mining cost went to maintenance and some 80% was operating expenses (operating labor). With each succeeding advance in equipment design towards larger, more complex, and more productive units, the pendu- lum swings the other way. As an example, haulage trucks have progressed through various stages in the past 20 years from 15-ton units to a 240-ton truck now in the "shakedown" or experimental stage. The following com- parison between 15-ton, 50-ton, and 100-ton haulage trucks clearly illus- trates this changing cost pattern in terms of percent of overall costs for running each size unit. Substantial deposits of Bessemer hematite have been found recently by drilling beneath Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, which is situated in the northern part of the Lake Superior Region. It will be practicable to divert the waters flowing into this lake and develop open pits on the upper pert of two large ore bodies by damming off and pumping out the water in the part of the lake in which they occur. Ultimately, the bulk of the ore will be mined by underground methods. Owing to the generally massive nature of the rocks in the area, no underground flows of major consequence are anticipated after diversion of the lake. The Steep Rock deposits are attributed in origin to hydrothermal replacement. They were formed, for the most part, along an unconform-able, brecciated contact between the Steep Rock limestone and an overlying younger volcanic series, The replacing solutions came in as igneous after-effects, following upon the intrusion of basic igneous rocks that invaded the hanging-wall volcanics. It is believed that this took place in a geological period roughly equivalent to late Middle Huronian, which was the period when the most extensive iron-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior Region were formed. Comparison is made with other deep-seated iron-ore bodies in the Lake Superior Region, the origins of which are ascribed in the discussion to hydrothermal replacement. Introduction Under the waters of Steep Rock Lake, Ontario, situated on the Canadian National Railway, 142 miles west of Port Arthur, the presence of three ore zones containing red and brown Bessemer hematite has been established. These were discovered and have been partly explored by means of diamond and churn drilling, The positions of the ore zones, designated as A, B and C, are shown on the accompanying maps and cross sections. This exploratory work, begun in 1938 by Joseph Errington* and Julian G. Cross, has been carried on by Steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd., and was continued during the winter of 1941-1942. For more than 60 years explorers have known that large quantities of hard hema. tite float of good grade existed along the south shore of Steep Rock Lake, and the presence of ore beneath the lake was inferred by many early geologists and explorers. Despite numerous previous attempts to find ore in place, actual discovery awaited the recent period of intensive exploratory effort in Canada. The results obtained in the drill holes put down since 1938 by steep Rock Iron Mines Ltd. are not only of interest, in themselves, to those concerned with the development of ore deposits, but, taken in connection with the surface exposures of adjoining formations, they form the assemblage of facts from which the geological reasoning in this paper proceeds; accordingly, they are set out here as briefly and exactly as may be.

COMPLETION of the Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River and Gorge this fall marks a new page of achievement in the annals of bridge- building. Symbolic of the amity between two great nations, the new bridge provides an additional gateway across the most peaceful border in the world. Ground was broken for the project May 16. 1940, at a site close to that formally occupied by the Falls View Bridge which was destroyed by a record ice jam in 1938. At this point, about 2000 ft. deep and 1000 ft. downstream from the American Falls, the gorge is about 200 ft. deep and 1000 ft. wide. The great steel arch of the bridge has a span of 950 ft. and rises from its supporting abutments on the American and Canadian sides of the river to the level of the top of the gorge. This is said to be the longest hingeless arch in the world.

IT has been demonstrated in the laboratory by A. J. Phillips1 that a transformation or conversion from beta directly to alpha may take place in a brass of 61 to 62.5 per cent copper content. The completion of the transformation is dependent on a rapid rate of cooling from the all-beta field through the alpha + beta range to the alpha field. Phillips states that in a slowly cooled alloy containing 62 per cent copper and 38 per cent zinc the copper content of the beta is progressively decreased from 62 to 56 per cent by precipitation of alpha. Rapid cooling tends to prevent the separation of alpha with a copper content of more than 62 per cent by reducing to a minimum the time required for passing through the alpha + beta range. Upon crossing beyond the (alpha + beta.)/(alpha) boundary to the all-alpha region below, the material is transformed from beta to alpha. It is essential that there be no change in composition. Phillips obtained his results by quenching a 62:38 copper-zinc alloy from 850° C. in iced brine at -8° C. No reference to the occurrence of this transformation in a manufacturing process has been found in the literature. An investigation of the microstructures of a number of hot forgings made from leaded brass rods yielded one forging in which this striking conversion from beta to alpha had occurred. The purpose of this paper is to describe the transformation and certain conditions under which it may occur during the hot pressing of brass. The conversion was noted in a shape forged from a leaded brass rod, the composition of which was: Cu, 60.26 per cent; Zn, 37.86; Pb, 1.88. In this study the lead content was disregarded and the alloy was considered to be equivalent to an alloy of 61.40 per cent copper and 38.60 per cent zinc (98.12 parts = 100 parts). The possibility that the lead might obstruct or accelerate the precipitation of alpha was not studied. The lead appears as black globules in the photomicrographs and has a negligible solubility in the alloy.

This paper, based on brief field examination and on data supplied by the operators, records the condition of the Italian mercury industry as of March 1945, not long after Italy's collapse. Except for the once-Italian but now Yugoslavian Idria mine near Trieste, virtually all the known mercury deposits are in the Monte Amiata district in Siena and Grosseto Provinces, 75 miles north of Rome. This district contains the Abbadia San Salvatore. the Siele. the Argus, and the Cerreto Piano mines besides numerous prospects and unproductive mines. Under pressure from Germany the principal mines were highly productive during the early part of the war, but production fell off long before its end. All of the mines were damaged in some way at the German withdrawal but by September 1944 the Abbadia had resumed production and several others were only lacking power by the early spring of 1945. The Monte Amiata district is characterized geologically by a thick series of sedimentary rocks that range from Triassic to Eocene in age . and are surmounted on Monte Amiata itself by a thick cap of extrusive trachyte. Bodies of travertine and of landslide detritus, younger than the trachyte, are rather widespread. The structure is complex and little known but most of the ore deposits seem to lie along or near a major, north-trending fault or on associated cross-fractures. Cinnabar is the only important ore mineral and clay minerals are by far the most abundant products of hydrothermal alteration. A southward increase in the amount of stibnite, relative to cinnabar, suggests horizontal zoning. The grade of ore ranges from 0.60 to 3.0 Pet and the reserves, as compared with those in American mines, are enormous. Even in the face of war-time scarcities, the mines are remarkably self-sufficient and labor is plentiful, but the costs of production are estimated to be not greatly below those of the better American mines. Notes on the principal mines, on the mining and metallurgical methods, and on the manufacture of synthetic cinnabar are included in the paper. Introduction With but few brief interludes, Spain and Italy, including the Idria mine near Trieste, which has passed from Austrian to Italian to Yugoslavian hands in the Past 3 decades, have led the world in the production of mercury, or quicksilver, for many centuries. Despite their enviable position with respect to the supplies of a metal so essential in both war and peace, there is a notable lack of up-to-date information in America on the mercury industry of either country. Duschak and Schuette' and Schuettez,3 give by far the best summaries in English known to the writer, but the latest firsthand report cited by them on the Italian mines was published in 1915.' Having been deeply interested in the geology and economics of mercury for several years, the writer naturally felt most fortunate in being the to obtain enough firsthand information on the Italian industry to fill at least a few of the gaps in our knowledge. The opportunity came during the war, soon after this industry, together with the rest of Italy, had capitulated to the Allies. Many of the facts presented here are thus definitely "dated," but others are of less transitory nature, and even the dated facts should be of interest in showing the strength and

THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

SUMMARY THE results of an enquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration 'are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys.

The unpredictable behavior of ground movement and subsidence has complicated the problems that attend the extraction of large quantities of ore. Special studies, particularly relating to coal mining, have yielded such a voluminous literature and so many involved controversial theories that a partial review would be difficult. Limited space makes any kind of a review impractical. The features to be considered cover only a relatively small part of the broad problems of ground movement and subsidence, but it is believed that this small part is critical. The practical aspects are important, since they bear directly on safety of mine workings, on recovery of ore and on dilution of ore in block caving and related systems for extracting large quantities of rock. The ground movement to be described occurs outside the vertical boundaries of a caved block in the area that is commonly referred to as being in the "zone of draw." "Draw" is a term that originated in the subsidence problems related to coal mining, and it is defined by a line drawn from the margin of the area caved underground to the most distant fracture at surface on the same side of the caved area as shown in Fig. I.' A line thus drawn is called the cave line, and its angle with respect to the horizontal is the cave angle or angle of draw. It is understood that the line is taken normal to the limit of mining, and in a vertical plane. The prevailing theories as to draw and angle of draw assume that appreciable movement occurred along the cave line, which has been described as a fracture resulting from the shearing action brought about by the weight of the overlying load. Fig. 3 shows diagrammatically the mechanics of ground movement adjacent to an area of subsidence according to the prevailing theory of draw (A, from Royce2) and, for comparison, ground movement observed in the Climax mine (B). The text in Peele's Handbook2 referring to Fig. 2 does not state the meaning of the "original position of top of workable ore" in the rectangular space above "ore in place," and the arrows are not explained. However, this presentation is most concerned with the zones outside the rectangle. According to the prevailing theory, as shown at the extreme left under A, Fig. 2, the vertical tension cracks at surface change at a shallow depth to shear fractures forming the cave line, and it is assumed that appreciable movement takes place along the cave line toward and into the subsiding caved block. The mechanics of ground movement observed in the Climax mine, as shown under B, Fig. 2, does not accord with the prevailing theory, particularly as regards the cave angle and draw. The vertical tension cracks seen at surface die out at depths of 150 to 225 ft. and shear fractures do not develop. Movement is confined at surface to a mantle of rock 50 to roo ft.

J. Chipman—It has been my privilege to discuss this work with the authors on several occasions and to observe at first hand the experimental methods employed. I wish, therefore, to emphasize certain points which they have mentioned only briefly with regard to the experimental techniques. The rotating induction furnace as here employed interposes liquid metal between slag and refractory thus preventing the two nonmetallic parts of the system from reaching equilibrium with one another. It is therefore impossible for the metallic phase to be completely in equilibrium with both the slag and the crucible. The metal also acts as a partially permeable membrane allowing certain components, including oxygen, to diffuse from slag to crucible. This transfer results in building up on the face of the crucible a layer of material whose composition is in part dependent on that of the bath. Reactions between the layer and the solid refractory are slow, as evidenced by the rather good life of the crucible. Hence it seems probable that the layer is more nearly in equilibrium with the metal than with the underlying crucible material and that, once it is established under a bath of a given composition, its further reactions with that bath are slow. Additions to slag or bath may be followed by changes in the layer; and time must be allowed for virtual completion of such changes, before it can be assumed that slag and metal are in equilibrium. We may judge from the results reported that, in general, this was the case and that the data represent at least quite close approximations to slag-metal equilibrium. Data on deoxidation and on oxygen solubility are no better than the analytical methods employed. The vacuum fusion method as used by the authors seems entirely adequate for the samples analyzed. I have had frequent occasion to compare results with their laboratory, always with very satisfactory agreement. The determination of aluminum at very low concentrations is perhaps an even more difficult procedure. Here also the colorimetric method used has been worked out with great care and is undoubtedly the most dependable method available. The discrepancy between observed and calculated deoxidation or solubility lines is not to be explained as the result of experimental errors, either in the sampling or analysis of the metal. Nor is it to be blamed upon inaccuracies in the several kinds of indirect data upon which the calculated results were based. It is true that both the observed and the calculated lines admit of some uncertainty as to their exact locations, but the uncertainties are small compared to the wide gap which separates the two lines. The authors have pointed out the real cause of the discrepancy. In all of their experiments the solid phase was not Al2O3 but a mixed oxide containing iron and aluminum. This suggests an extension of the calculated values to include equilibrium with the spinel FeO . A12O3. The free energies of FeO and A12O3 are known, that of the spinel is not. However, it cannot differ greatly from that of its component oxides for even in the more stable spinel, chromite, the free energy of formation from the oxides is less than 10,000 cal. For purposes of calculation we shall call this free energy X and solve for values of X lying between zero and 10,000 cal. The other data required are taken from the forthcoming revision of "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking" and are given in the following equations in which underlined symbols indicate elements dissolved in liquid steel and the standard concentrations are 1 pct. ?F° at 1600°C, cal ?LA = 2 Al + 3 O; + 107,200 FeO = Fe + 0; + 5,460 FeO + A12O3 = Fe + 2A1 + 4 0; + 112,660 — X The corresponding equilibrium concentrations are shown in fig. 21. The line marked A12O3 corresponds to the first equation, those marked FeO . AL2O3 correspond to the last, with X = 0, 5000 and 10,000 cal, respectively. The two upper lines represent the data of Hilty and Crafts and of Wentrup and Hieber. The points are the observations of Hilty and Crafts in the presence of 0.50 pct Mn.

The following report on the structure of copper is the result of work done in the laboratory of the Rome Wire Co. early in 1925. Previous work had indicated to the author that excellent results might be expected if a suitable technique in surfacing and etching could be developed. The resources of the Rome Wire Co. enabled this metal to be studied more intensively than previously, although none of the materials were investigated exhaustively. The material presented is hardly more than a preliminary summary of the most obvious character of the metal; a much longer research would have been necessary to solve many of the pressing problems connected with the casting and working of copper. The Rome Wire Co. has generously released the paper; to Dr. E. H. Darby, technical supervisor of the company, are due particular thanks for his appreciation of the importance of metallographic study of copper and for his effective support in the prosecution of the work and in making its publication possible. Dendrites, Cells and Granules The microscope reveals at least three orders of structural units in copper, as in other metals. The largest structural units are the dendrites —spine-shaped crystals building up the masses of metal when it solidifies from a melt or is crystallized from solutions by chemicals or electricity. The nucleus cells, commonly called "grains," are the largest and most conspicuous units of recrystallized solid metal; the limitations of their growth usually confine their sizes to microscopic proportions, although in "single crystals" they may become as large as the piece of metal itself. The granules are the microscopic fine-structural blocks or laminations that build up the nucleus cells; they are revealed when metal is etched with suitable chemicals. The granules are commonly visible at 500 diameters magnification and are plainly visible at 1000 diameters; magnification of the granular surfaces up to 6000 to 9000 diameters shows no finer units, not because of lack of optical resolution but because the chemical attack has left an unfeatured smooth surface.
