Standard petrographic profiles for many Permian seams from New South Wales and Queensland have been drawn up. The standard profiles of seams of the same age and from one or more coalfields were used to compile an idealized or type seam sequence for those coals in which more than half the seam profiles were similar to one another. In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

"Selectively recovering pentlandite from high levels of pyrrhotite presents a technical and operational challenge. The liberation characteristics and also the chemical environment is critical to performing a successful separation. Reviewing the mineralogy to understand the characteristics of the ore and the plant flotation behavior is fundamental to designing a successful improvement program.At Savannah Nickel the challenges presented by a falling nickel price required a rethink of the flowsheet to improve the project economics through improving the concentrate grade and recoveries. Glencore Technology reviewed the plant performance and proposed and tested solutions to improve the grade performance of the concentrator with the support of the plant team. A pilot plant comprising a M20 IsamillTM followed by an L500/1 Jameson Cell was operated on various plant streams. In addition to the pilot plant, flotation surveys and a plant based laboratory program was used to supplement the plant understanding and within two weeks significant improvements were identified and demonstrated. The combination of the pilot operation and the plant based laboratory program was able to quickly demonstrate the improvements and test with equipment that is fully scaleable from pilot plant to full scale.IntroductionPanoramic Resources Limited is a Western Australian mining company formed in 2001 for the purpose of developing the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Panoramic successfully commissioned the $65 million Savannah Project in late 2004. The process plant at Savannah comprises a single stage crusher, SAG mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper, cobalt concentrate. Metallurgical recoveries average 86-89% for nickel, 94-97% for copper and 89-92% for cobalt. The plant was originally designed for a throughput of 750,000 tonnes per annum, but has consistently outperformed the design specifications.Due to low nickel prices the Savannah Nickel mine and processing plant were placed into care and maintenance in May 2016. Prior to suspending production Glencore Technology was engaged to investigate options to improve the concentrate grade. With the discovery of Savannah North in 2014 and the Savannah North Scoping Study demonstrating LoM ~8 years and Mining Inventory of 6.07Mt @ 1.26% Ni, 0.64% Cu and 0.09% Co significant future potential exists. By completing pilot plant studies prior to shutting down, the plant engineering studies can be completed and the plant readied for restart by the time the nickel price improves."

"FOREWORDVirtually all government agencies undertook many additional responsibilities during the period immediately preceding World War II; these responsibilities increased vastly in importance and scope after the actual declaration of war following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Bureau of Mines was one of the agencies thus affected, and it was called upon to perform many duties foreign to its normal peacetime activities.The Health and Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, at that time designated the Health and Safety Branch, was given several important and difficult duties and responsibilities of an unusual nature because of the war while of necessity-continuing its normal functions of assisting the mineral industries in the preservation of life and health and the protection of property, this being of especial importance in wartime because of the pre-eminent importance of having maximum output of essentially all types of mineral products. Some of these additional functions were given to the Health and Safety Division because the organization of the Division, with its field set-up dividing the Nation into districts with competent, experienced personnel in charge of its work, provided the nucleus of personnel and procedure through which rapid and smooth expanded functioning was feasible.In addition to the responsibilities directly attributable to definite war activities, such as the administration of the wartime Federal. Explosives Act and the Mineral Production Security Branch a new branch (then designated division) was formed to investigate coal-mine health and safety problems after the enactment of the Federal Coal-Mine Inspections and Investigations Act, which became a law on May 7, 1941, but which actually began to function actively after the declaration of war in December 1941.The purpose of this publication is to provide a brief historical record of the activities of the Health and Safety Division as a whole and of its individual branches during the war. The iron ore industry faces significant challenges in the control of dust to meet emissions regulations and goals, as well as ensuring sustainable operations. This paper describes some of the different techniques and innovative technologies that are being developed and implemented to improve the suppression of airborne dust, specifically through the use of high energy micromist sprays. The utilisation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and simulation is identified and described as a key enabling technology for an improvement in dust suppression solutions both from a level of understanding the source and flow of dust emissions, and for the development of new systems that can be used in the iron ore industry. CFD modelling is shown to be effective for modelling both spray dispersion and cross-wind effects, allowing designers to develop high-efficiency dust suppression systems with a greatly improved level of confidence when compared to traditional techniques. New high energy micromist technology is also outlined as a key element in developing high-efficiency dust suppression systems. Experimental results and industry applications are presented to demonstrate the significant improvements that can be achieved in suppressing or reducing airborne dust emissions.CITATION:Roberts, J M and Wypych, P W, 2017. The history of mining is rightly proud of its achievements in improving productivity and cost improvements over the years. No matter what measure is used, tonnes per manhour, cost per tonne, etc vast improvements have been made over the last hundred years. In fact over the last ten years in Australian coal mines raw coal output per employee has increased by 60 per cent. When one examines why these improvements have taken place the principal reasons have been technological advancement in mining equipment, excavator and dump truck capacity increases, longwall and continuous miners continually improving in reliability and size. Of course all these improvements are correlated to an increase in capital cost. Even with the above-mentioned advances the pressure for increased performance is as strong as ever. The international mining and mineral-processing sector is currently operating in a recessive market with some traditional commodities, eg gold trading at 20 year lows. During recessive times senior management will demand greater returns on capital employed: the obvious choices being reducing costs or increasing throughput. In addition, head office environments will often place a capital freeze on operational management so the opportunity to take advantage of technological change is not available. The challenge is, therefore, to increase throughput and cut costs without the need for capital. The answer is to optimise the existing labour and plant. If done systematically a result in productivity improvement, in our experience, as high as 45 per cent can be achieved with the average across South East Asia and Australasia being 21 - 23 per cent. The intention of this paper is to present a systematic approach to labour and machine utilisation thereby gaining the greatest possible return on the existing capital base.

In this study, adsorption of copper by chemically modified orange peel was investigated. A conspicuous change occurs in the surface morphology of the biomass due to modification, which is depicted by SEM images. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were obtained and the effects of various factors, including solution pH, contact time, initial metal ions concentration and temperature, were studied by batch experiments. Kinetics was found to be best-fit pseudosecond- order equations. Equilibrium was better described by Langermuir isotherms rather than Freudlich isotherms. At 25?, pH5.30, the maximum adsorption capacity was 70.67mg?g-1 . With increase of temperature, adsorption efficiency decreased. The biosorbent was suitable for repeated use for more than five cycles.

The ability to precondition (weaken) a rock mass to enhance caving (cavability and fragmentation) is becoming increasingly important, as more potential caving deposits are in stronger rock masses, and at greater depth. This paper discusses a full-scale blast preconditioning experiment conducted at the Cadia East mining operation, including quantification of visible and microscale blast damage. From a cave mining perspective, the objectives of the experiment were to quantify the effect of confined blasting on rock mass characteristics relevant to enhanced caving, and to provide calibration data for the purpose of numerically modelling alternative blast preconditioning designs.The experiment was located approximately 360 m below surface, and consisted of two f165 mm blastholes (60 m vertical holes) and eight HQ diamond drill monitoring holes (35 m horizontal holes). The diamond drill holes were used to sample the rock mass before and after the blast at varying distances from the blastholes. Rock mass blast damage was quantified both visually using core logging, and on a microscale using LABYRINTH® statistical analysis of X-ray microtomography data. Results from the experiment indicated four major findings:on the visible scale, the experiment indicated a 147 per cent increase in the number of hairline cracks within 5 m (p value = 0.015), but no change in geotechnical logging parametersmicroscale tomography of intact rock samples indicate significant localised intact rock damage up to 4 m from the blasthole (p = 0.007)preliminary point load test results indicate that blast damage results in a significant reduction in intact rock strength (p = 0.050)the significant increase in porosity and microfracture size associated with damage provides a mechanism for reduced intact rock strength due to confined blasting.CITATION:Stewart, P C, Brunton, I, Francis, D and Chitombo, G, 2016. With the development of the shield support, the primary requirement for successful ground control in longwall mining is to provide stable gate road and bleeder entries. Wood cribbing has been the dominant form of secondary support. However, the cost and limited availability of timber, along with the poor performance of softwood crib supports, has forced western U.S. mines to explore the utilization of other support systems. The recent success of cable bolts has engendered much interest from western operators. Several innovative freestanding support systems have been developed recently including: (1) "The Can"' support by Burrell Mining Products International, Inc., (2) Hercules and Link-N-Lock wood cribs and Propsetter by Strata Products (USA) Inc., (3) Variable Yielding Crib and Power Crib supports by Mountainland Support Systems, (4) the Confined Core Crib developed by Southern Utah Fuels Corporation; and (5) the MEGA prop by MBK Hydraulik. This paper assesses design considerations and compares the performance and application of these alternative secondary support systems.

"In 2002, Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB released the new rig control system (RCS) technology for all of its drill rig types. RCS opened the way for a new generation of computerized drill rigs based on modern, standard PC-computer technology. Drilling accuracy, information logging, reduction in manpower in some types, and serviceability have all taken a quantum leap forward when compared with previous generations of drill rigs. RCS is modularized and distributed by means of CAN-bus technology. This technology, which is well proven in automobile applications, forms the communication backbone of the rig. The modularity facilitates almost unlimited possibilities for the expansion and adaptation of drill rig functions."

"North American Palladium commissioned the new concentrator at the Lac des Iles mine in the summer of 2001. The 15,000 tonnes per day mill replaced the existing 2,400 tonnes per day facility, as part of a major mine expansion.At Lac des Iles, the grain size distribution of the platinum group minerals (PGM) is bi-modal. Roughly two-thirds of the PGM are relatively coarse-grained, and often associated with fast floating copper and nickel sulphides. The remainder is ultra-fine, and locked in silicates, which poses a special challenge to the metallurgist. The previous mill typically recovered just the fast-floating mineralisation, but to achieve target recoveries, the new mill has to recover a substantial amount of the ultra-fine PGM. The metallurgical challenges associated with the recovery of fine-grained PGM in the talcous Lac des Iles ores, are described.The paper describes the approach used in circuit optimisation, and how metallurgical and operational optimisation raised palladium recoveries by more than 6% in six months, by tuning the circuit to recover some of the ultra-fine PGM mineralisation.BACKGROUNDThe Lac des Iles mine, owned and operated by North American Palladium Limited, is located about 115 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The mine originally opened in December 1993, and prior to 2001 included a mill capable of handling 2,400 tonnes per day of ore delivered from the nearby Roby pit.Following an intensive exploration programme conducted in 1999, and a detailed feasibility study, conducted in 2000, North American Palladium initiated a mine expansion project, the objective being to expand milling throughput from 2,400 tonnes per day to 15,000 tonnes per day. This required construction of an entirely new mill, which was commissioned in May 2001."

Oxide ores can consume enormous amounts of expensive sulfuric acid. The problem is amplified with increasing heap heights. One solution is to provide a thin liner and drainage system between each lift of ore, thereby intercepting the pregnant leach leach solution (PLS) after it exits the active lift. However, these liner systems require special attention to hydraulics, slope stability and geomembrane design criteria. Inadequate attention to the first two can result in reduced recoveries, increased acid consumption andsystem failures. The geomembrane selection criteria are different from the base liner, and optimizing its selection can have significant effects on the operation’s bottom line.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

"The start-up of new plants, extending from the commissioning of equipment to the production ramp-up, is a critical period where the processing circuit operation must be done in a structured and well controlled way to enable the gradual, safe and rapid achievement of production targets. The magnitude of the many risks associated with this pivotal period is accentuated in the actual context of low commodity prices. However, the implementation of a method that analyzes risks associated with a start-up, their probability of occurrence and their impacts leads to the identification of a series of preventive actions that can be applied in order to reduce potential negative impacts.Soutex has been involved in numerous start-ups over the last few years and has developed a structured methodology to assess this crucial period, maximize the pre-start-up preparation, ensure a smoother and safer ramp-up period and minimize the time needed before reaching commercial production.This paper describes a method to identify preventive actions to apply in order to reduce risks related to a plant start-up. Then, the various steps of the method are demonstrated using the industrial case study of the Canadian Malartic gold plant situated in Abitibi, Québec. The specific preventive actions, during start-up, the organisational measures and the ramp-up plan are detailed as they were effectively achieved. Finally, the post start-up actions are presented as well as some key results illustrating the achievement of their prior defined objectives.IntroductionPlanning a new plant or new circuit start-up in a mine installation involves various risks, both at the economical and safety levels. Unprepared staff and equipment can lead to safety issues that could threaten plant staff as well as the environment. Moreover, a poorly prepared start-up could often lead to equipment break-down, production stoppages and delays, leading to important economic impacts, delaying commercial production and therefore affecting directly the profitability of mining projects.It is common in the industry to have structured commissioning procedures for major equipment taken separately. Technical personnel from the equipment manufacturing company would usually come on site in order to perform the pre-operation verification, dry runs and the first hours of operations. This kind of assistance is usually focussed on one piece of equipment and neglects the interactions between the various equipment of the production chain. The commissioning phase is usually maintenance oriented and the information given by the manufacturing representative seldomly flows through the operation staff (in the case of this paper, the denomination “staff” refers to both managing and operating employees). The global process is usually not taken into consideration by the technical personnel sent on-site by the manufacturer during the commissioning phase. Many papers can be found describing the commissioning of new equipment focussing on the technology (Côté and Adante (2009), Wells et al (2007)) but without dealing with its integration process in the complete production chain."

"INTRODUCTION The character of mine drainage from areas of low pyritic coal3 and from average pyritic coal4 has been investigated, and to complete the study it seemed desirable to select a number of mines situated in high pyritic are as to determine whether or not this variation determines the relative acidity of drainage from mines operating in these characteristic coal fields. Advantage has been taken of some worked on in 1918 by Henry Leighton 5, then Professor of Economic Geology, University of Pittsburgh. He visited and has reported certain areas of high pyritic coal which we also visited during this study. Many of the mines were found to be idle in 1930 and a few were caved shut, apparently for several years. However, samples of the outflow from all mines visited were collected if possible and analyzed, and some general information was gathered for each mine.
