February 2, 1999 marks a milestone in earth-moving technology at the San Miguel Lignite Mine. It was on that date that The North American Coal Corporation (NAC) took delivery of three Leica Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems for use on its bulldozers. The primary reason for the purchase of these grade control systems was to prove that GPS technology could safely and economically be utilized on heavy equipment to assist operators in defining grades. If these properties were successfully demonstrated, the ultimate vision of the project was to expand the system to a point were GPS would become the primary means of providing grade control information to the mine’s heavy equipment operators. Twenty nine months and more than $500,000 later this vision was realized when the final bulldozer operating at the San Miguel Lignite Mine was equipped with Dozer 2000. Presently North American Coal has a total of nine Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems at San Miguel providing cut and fill information to operators 24 hours a day. These grade control systems have allowed the San Miguel operation to increase safety, reduce costs, improve operator attitude, and better ensure environmental compliance. This article discusses both the nature of these benefits and some of the issues that had to be dealt with along the way.

Small-scale continuous flotation tests are described in which the influence of 1) pulp density and 2) feed rate on the rate of flotation are investigated. The results provide further evidence of first-order kinetics for flotation and indicate that tests at different feed rates provide a particularly simple method of determining rate constants. Flotation kinetics are discussed in general terms. Over a period of many years numerous research workers have studied the rate of recovery of valuable materials from flotation pulps with a view to deter-mining the mechanism of the froth flotation process. Froth flo ation is fundamentally a collision process involviug at some stage collision and then mutual attachment between air bubbles and mineral particles. It is possible to draw analogies therefore between the flotation process involving mainly macroscopic particles and the ordinary processes of chemical reaction kinetics involving collisions between atoms, molecules and ions. By adopting this analogy we may postulate a general equation representing the kinetics of the flotation process: -dC/dt =K.CC ,Aa (1) The rate constant, K, will be a complex function involving reagent concentrations, particle and bubble sizes, induction times and no doubt flotation cell design. However, these are factors which can be kept constant in any series of experiments, permitting investigation of the exponents a and c, which determine the order of the reaction occurring in flotation. The various research investigations carried out so far have all aimed at evaluating a and c and in the majority of cases only since the concentration of air has usually been kept constant in a series of tests, so that a relationship of the following type has been investigated: -dC/dt = K1 Cc (2) The techniques of both batch testing and continuous testing have been used to investigate this relationship. The refraction seismic method has been used as an indirect means of exploring for fluorspar in southern Illinois by the Illinois State Geological Survey. Use of the method has been restricted to those areas where mineralization is associated with faults, a restriction necessitated by the operating principles of the refraction method. The seismic data enable the interpreter to locate fault zones in the subsurface and, under ideal circumstances, to make estimates of dip direction and magnitude and vertical displacement provided the local stratigraphic units are known and are geophysically recognizable. In this instance, refraction seismic exploration has been successful in the surface mapping of well-developed faults, both simple and complex with which fluorspar may or may not be associated. However, less clear results have been obtained where faulting has been less severe and where there are numerous accompanying mineralized joints.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

The runout of dry blocky rock avalanches produced by planar rockslides affecting a limestone formation with clayey interbeds is analysed by means of distinct element modelling. Numerical analyses are validated by means of the back analysis of a historical rockslide occurred in the investigated area and physical aspects of the phenomenon evidenced by modelling are discussed. On analyse par la méthode aux élements distincts la distance de parcours des avalanches rocheuses sèches produites par des glissements plan interessant une formation de calcaire à intercalaires argilleux. Les analyses numeriques sont validées à l’aide de la back-analysis d’un glissement historique survenue dans le site en examen. On décrit les aspects physiques su phénomène mis en évidence par la modélisation efféctuée. In diesem Beitrag wird die Reichweite von Steinlawinen besthend aus trockenem blockhaftem Fels mittels der Distinct Element Methode untersucht. Die Steinlawinen werden erzeugt von Rutschungen in einer Kalkstein-Formation mit tonhaltige Schichten betreffen. Die numerischen Berechnungen wurden anhand einer Simulation einer historischen Bergsturzen verifiziert, der sich auf den untersuchten Gebiet ereignete. Auf der Basis der erhaltenen Ergebnisse wurden die physikalischen Aspekte der untersuchten Steinlawinen analysiert.

The Gippsland Basin is one of Australia's most important producers of petroleum products. An inevitable byproduct of the production, refinement and transport of the millions of barrels of oil is thousands of tonnes of waste. These wastes are generated from the wellhead through to the petrol bowser and range from oily brines and coal tars to oil and petrol contaminated soils. The vast majority of these wastes are of a relatively low toxicity and most importantly are carbon-based and biodegradable. Current disposal practices tend to ignore the latter characteristic and inappropriate and/or expensive waste disposal solutions such as landfilling (tipping), incineration or ocean outfalls are the result. A very cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative is land treatment of such wastes. Landfarming, as it is called, has been successfully practiced in Europe for over a decade. Essential features of the system are: ò Application of a predetermined quantity of biodegradable waste in liquid, sludge or highly contaminated soil form, to pre-ploughed soil with concurrent addition of nutrients (N, P and trace elements) and lime to encourage bacterial activity. ò Harmless bacteria already present within the soil break down the carbon-based compounds into carbon dioxide, water and waste heat, WHILE concurrently generating new cells. The breakdown occurs over a period of weeks to months and continues with time with the extremely low levels of the more difficult waste types being the last to disappear. ò Further waste is applied to the soil at regular intervals. The treatment area may be dedicated to landfarming or may be used alternatively for agricultural purposes. Application rates vary but may be as high as 800 tonnes per hectare per year for wastes such as refinery sludges.

The Donkin-Morien Mine in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, has successfully completed the excavation of a 7.6m (25-ft) diameter access decline over a distance of 3.5km out under the Atlantic Ocean. The tunnel, completed in December 1984, was driven through a sedimentary sequence of sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and various gassy coal seams prior to intersecting the Harbour Coal Seam where development work will commence. The tunnel was driven by a Canadian prototype tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufactured by Lovat Tunnel Equipment, Inc., Toronto, Ontario. The 7.6m (25-ft) diameter full-face shielded TBM operated at various grades from 0-20%. This paper outlines the TBM design, excavation, support and backup system utilized in the drivage. Problems encountered and drivage rates will be addressed.

"Ultrafine grinding of minerals has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years. Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The recent development of industrially proven and cost efficient technologies for ultrafine grinding has opened up another processing option for the treatment of finegrained metalliferous and refractory gold ores. The current commercial designs are variations of stirred mills used in the industrial minerals sector for the past 30 years. For the purposes of this paper ultrafine grinding is considered to be P80 of less than 15 microns.Attrition milling to fine grind sizes presents some challenging issues relating to scale-up including the dearth of information on the quantitative impact of feed and operating conditions, as well as the precise and accurate measurement of particle size distributions. Two examples from recent installations will be analyzed including Thalanga Copper and Century Zinc Mines. Both have diverse grind size targets for the SMD, yet both have realized significant metallurgical gains."

Ore sorting is a high capacity, low cost method of pre concentrating ores and in some cases of producing a marketable concentrate. In most cases it is applied to run of mine material, immediately after primary crushing and screening in sizes ranging from 10 mm to 150 mm. Recent developments in bulk sorting of friable uranium deposits have resulted in machines capable of handling fine materials with sensing and separation being achieved on a zone by zone basis. Modern ore sorting machines rely on the synchronous operation of four internal subsystems, feed presentation, sensing, data processing and separation. A variety of different sub systems is available which can be combined in various forms to produce sorters capable of handling a wide variety of mineral types. The benefits in using ore sorting cover a wide range of situations and are applicable to both established mines as well as new mining ventures. Reduced operating costs, increased productivity, capital savings, energy and resource conservation and environmental issues are all part of the reason why ore sorting is finding rapid acceptance in today's mining industry. The suitability of different ore types for pre-concentration using anyone of the variety of ore sorting systems can be quickly established using computer based techniques which require only small samples of the materials under investigation.

To cater for the future introduction of 12 car trains, London Blackfriars railway station is being extended from the north end to span across the River Thames. Following the demolition of existing buildings, a number of challenges had to be overcome including working adjacent to a live railway line, above live London Underground tracks and working in small restricted spaces. Trains entering and exiting two lines of track at the bridge's north end of track meant that access was difficult due to the location and proximity to existing infrastructure. The site was very much constrained and congested and there were also a series of works in place to maintain passenger flows so as not to inconvenience the travelling public. The site had been developed many times in the past resulting in a number of obstructions that would require removal during the piling work including old brickwork, reinforced concrete, redundant railway sleepers and track and existing concrete and timber piles. A number of solutions had to be devised to overcome these obstructions. Piling works were undertaken during the day and at night to meet programme.

Although two-entry yield pillar-based gate roads supported by wooden cribs have been commonly used throughout longwalling in the Wasatch PlateadRoan Cliffs coalfield of central Utah, a three-entry yield-abutment gate road configuration was recently trialed in the Hiawatha Seam at the Genwal Resources (GRI) Crandall Canyon No. 1 Mine, near Huntington, UT. Pillar, entry, and cable bolt performance were monitored through second panel mining using a fairly extensive array of geomechanical instruments installed over a span of four crosscuts. Ground pressure and entry closure measurements confirmed that the 9.1-m-wide (30-ft) yield pillar was partially shielded from first panel longwall loads by the 36.6-m-wide (120-ft) abutment pillar, and consequently, experienced only minor yielding until the approach of the second panel face. Complete yielding of the 9. I-m-wide (30-ft) pillar occurred when the second panel was approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) inby the instrumentation site. Average cable bolt loads and differential roof sag remained low through second panel mining and tailgate entry ground conditions were excellent; however, very high ground pressures in the abutment and yield pillars, and second panel rib strongly suggest a high potential for coal bumps utilizing this gate road configuration at mining cover depths in excess of 396 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). This conclusion is supported by the suspected occurrence of small coal bumps along the abutment pillar ribs, observed indirectly as fresh debris in the middle entry just behind the second face. This paper presents a case history developed from the geotechnical measurements and on-site observations of this unique application of a yield-abutment gate road configuration and cable support system in the Hiawatha Seam.

Spiral separators are commonly used to upgrade sand-sized particles in both the coal and mineral processing industries. Many plants utilize multiple stages of cleaning and/or scavenging spirals to improve recovery and/or final product grade. Field studies suggest, however, that the layout of industrial spiral circuits is often less than optimal. This oversight can usually be attributed to a failure by plant designers to consider fundamental process engineering rules that govern the layout of complex separation circuits. This article reviews some of these important rules as specifically applied to multistage spiral circuit design. Two industrial case studies, one involving the upgrading of heavy mineral sands and a second involving the cleaning of fine coal, are presented to illustrate the impact of good design protocols on spiral circuit performance.

This article deals with an investigation into the specification and use of appropriate seating systems to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure in typical vehicles used in the SA mining industry. The EU Directive EU/44/2002 to be legislated in 2005 in European countries, provides legal and economic motivation for this project. The criteria for seat selection can be condensed to the requirements in the directive, which mandates an action level of 0.5 m/s2and a vibration exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 for an equivalent 8-hour daily exposure period. As part of this study six suspension seats, which the manufacturers claim satisfy the requirements in ISO 70966, were tested to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck. Six test subjects, three ?light? and three ?heavy? as specified in ISO 70966, were used to estimate the seat transmissibility functions in the vertical direction of the six different suspension seats. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory with two excitation levels of 1 m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5?30 Hz frequency range, as well as one spectrum approximating the EM5 spectral class. SEAT values were calculated for road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. A set of seat selection guidelines that can be followed by vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, procurement officers and and the technical staff on a mine is proposed in this article. It is recommended that additional studies of the use and operating conditions of seating systems in the SA industry, as well as an epidemiological survey be commissioned to gather additional information on this subject. Acoustic emission monitoring techniques are a powerful tool for analysing deformation behaviour and fracture characteristics of rock samples under uniaxial loading. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out on three different types of sandstone for a better understanding of acoustic emission response with respect to rock deformation and damage develop-ment. All sandstone samples revealed congruent characteristic acous-tic emission patterns which correlated directly with distinct stress-strain stages. However, the acoustic response and development within the individual stages proved to be entirely different due to variations in their microstructure.

Non-transfer-arc linear plasma systems are highly suited to manufacturing nanoparticles. In this paper, the manufacturing of such particles with specially designed plasma systems is discussed. In general, it entails the volatilization of a metal halide that is injected in the high-temperature region of a plasma flame, where it is reacted with a suitable reagent, for example O2, to produce nanooxide powders. Metal powders can also be introduced directly in the plasma. Due to the very short residence time of only milliseconds in the reaction zone, as well as the fact that the reaction takes place in the gas phase, combined with very rapid quenching in the order of 10 000°C.s-1, nanoparticles are produced. At Necsa the manufacturing of such particles has been demonstrated on various scales. A pilot plant for the production of nano-Al2O3, and two pilot plants, one using SiCl4 and the other one using SiF4 as feed material, were built to produce fumed, pyrogenic, nano-SiO2. The alumina plant had a production rate of 8?10 kg.h-1 and the silica plants had production rates of 2 and 10 kg.h-1 respectively. Perfectly spherical alumina particles with a particle size distribution of between 10 and 200 nm were produced on a continuous system. Particle size analysis for the silica by SEM measurements showed a d50 of 60 nm and a particle size distribution of 30?100 nm. The specific surface area was in the range of 170m2.g-1. Other samples of plasma produced nanoparticles such ZnO and B4C will also be presented.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) initiated an overview of the Caltrans Bridge Design Specifications (BDS) and bridge seismic design practice in California. This overview is continuing under the direction of the Applied Technologies Council (ATC-32), to review and revise as necessary existing standards, performance criteria, specifications, and practices for design and construction of new bridge structures within California. The ATC-32 project began in August 1991 and is expected to be completed in 1995. Since 1990, Caltrans project-specific seismic criteria have been developed and implemented on the I-280 and I-480 projects in San Francisco. Caltrans and an independent seismic safety review panel continue to develop and implement these criteria on other projects. In 1991 and 1992, project-specific seismic criteria were used on the I-880 reconstruction project in Oakland. The seismic safety review panel considered the I-880 seismic design criteria a state-of-the-art methodology to ensure seismic safety against collapse of bridge structures subjected to a maximum credible seismic event. This paper highlights the 1992 "I-880 Reconstruction Project Seismic Design Criteria Review" report prepared by the Seismic Safety Review Panel and Caltrans Division of Structures and will compare pre-1989 BDS and AASHTO methodologies to the I-880 criteria.

"In 1942, commercial mining operations began in what is now the Lucky Friday Ag/Pb/Zn mine in Idaho’s Silver Valley. Wholly owned since 1962 by Hecla Mining Company, the mine has produced more than 145 million ounces of silver and has been a mainstay producer in Idaho’s Silver Valley for over 70 years.However, by the early 21st century, the mill had fallen, technologically, seriously behind the rest of the industry. Accordingly, starting in 2005, the current mill management team set to revitalizing the milling operation. This paper will describe how the mill was systematically evaluated and the aging infrastructure replaced with more current technology. Driven by internal mill review studies supported by QEMSCAN mineralogical balancing, the mill has in recent years been through waves of upgrading – from the installation of new mechanical and column flotation equipment to the introduction of on-stream analysis, a technology well-accepted around most of the industry but alien to this technologically conservative mining district.The experience at Lucky Friday is a testament to the need for ongoing structured mill optimisation and technology upgrading in established mining operations. This paper will describe engineering experiences associated with upgrading equipment in an operating mill, contained in a confined building. Experiences in teaching the team new ways of operating a mill, and finally the metallurgical rewards that have been reaped will be described.INTRODUCTIONMining in Idaho’s Silver ValleyIdaho’s Silver Valley is a 64-km long valley flanked by the US Northern Rocky mountains, seldom more the 3-km wide, and stretching across much of Idaho’s northern panhandle, roughly 150 km south of the Canadian border. Mining has been continuously active in the area for more than 140 years, during which time, the Silver Valley has become one of the richest silver producing districts in the world, and as of 1985 had out-produced the 500 years of production from the famed Potosi district in Bolivia. Since 1885, almost 100 deposits have been discovered and worked in the district (Chapman, 2000)."

The Central Andes in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina , contain two contiguous terranes which were accreted to Gondwanaland between the end of the Devonian and the end of the Triassic. These terranes, Arequipa in the north, and Chilenia in the south, differ from each other in the timing and style of their metallogenic development. However, they contain over 90% of the Central Andean porphyry copper resource. The copper porphyries in the Arequipa terrane are Paleocene to lower Oligocene in age, whereas the Chilenia deposits are mid-upper Cretaceous and mid-upper Miocene. Porphyry copper deposits occur outside these terranes, but are all Miocene in age. Miocene porphyry-style mineralisation also exists in the Arequipa terrane, but is copper-deficient and gold-rich. The accreted terranes may have favoured porphyry and other styles of copper mineralisation because they possessed relatively thin continental crust compared to adjacent parts of the Andes. Crustal thickening which commenced at about 30 Ma in the Arequipa terrane coincided with a major change to polymetallic, precious metal mineralisation which commonly displays high sulfidation characteristics.
