"An introduction and case study of Mintek's latest generation of Milling Circuit controller, the MillStarTM with IES (Interpreting Expert System) is presented. This paper also describes as a case study its installation on a Southern African base metals concentrator plant which has demonstrated improved operation, greatly reduced variation in product quality, as well as increased capacity and availability of the circuit.In this case study, the MillStarTMw as installed along with several other enhancements, including hydrocyclone underflow monitoring, product particle size estimation and flotation circuit stabilisation. MillStarTM utilised the particle size measurement to control grind to within 2% of setpoint, all the while ensuring sump level control, density control as well as mill power optimisation. Mintek' s expertise in the modelling of tumbling mills allowed the development of a specialised optimising controller that ensured the mill was kept in the most efficient operating region.MillStarTM augments the automatic control with useful user interface features, such as on-line trends of any logged variables, historic data warehousing and retrieval and production summary reports.A novel feature that distinguishes the MillStarTMi s the IES (Interpreting Expert System). This is a feature of the software that works with the automatic control code to generate explanations for control actions made by the controller. Often complex control systems are mysterious in nature, reducing trust and eventually resulting in them being switched off. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. Today computers are accepted as a standard item in industry and they perform a variety of tasks over a wide spectrum of activities from mine planning and CAD to data processing and spreadsheet work. However many problems particularly in the. area of decision making where there are no clear mathematical models available and usually the output or answer is dependent to some extent on a heuristic approach, don't lend themselves to conventional solutions using standard procedural algorithms. Recently a number of techniques have evolved primarily from the enhanced capabilities of modem equipment, which are capable of solving these problems. This paper is a brief overview of these rather unconventional developments of computer technology in the area of artificial intelligence with reference to their application in mining.

Noise is one of the most pervasive health hazards in mining. A compilation of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) noise survey data for fiscal year 1990 shows that approximately 40% of the total samples taken for longwall occupations exceeded the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 100% (Gigliotti et al., 1991). To effectively determine worker noise exposures on longwall coal mining systems, it is necessary to provide accurate baseline measurements for these mining systems. This research was designed to develop measurement methods and test procedures for identifying noise sources that are major contributors to the underground noise exposure of longwall coal mining system workers. The measurement system that was used to analyze the noise sources around a stageloader used stationary dosimeters in a documented repeatable pattern to record the sound pressure and dose levels. A time-motion study of the cutting cycle and stageloader operator’s work cycle was done to correlate the sound levels at measurement locations and the resulting operator’s daily dose with significant noise events. Results from the underground measurements show that the highest sound levels recorded were at the stageloader discharge segment and tailpiece controls, where sound levels remained about the same throughout the test.

Arrium (previously OneSteel) initiated a desktop study into the performance of its hematite ore beneficiation plant in early 2010. The beneficiation plant utilises jig concentrators and spirals to upgrade low-grade hematite recovered during mining at the Iron Duke (ID) mine site located 60 km south-west of Whyalla. The study, conducted in conjunction with Mineral Technologies, identified a number of opportunities for improvement, which were validated by a series of sampling campaigns and a pilot plant trial. One of the major recommendations was to upgrade the ultra-fines processing circuit from a single-stage spiral circuit to a three-stage circuit. The upgrade of the ultra-fines circuit was estimated to provide a significant increase in fines production and grade.In order to capitalise on the strong iron price at the time of the project, Arrium decided to utilise a fast-tracked approach to design, construct and commission the processing equipment required to achieve the improvements identified. This decision introduced the risk of missing critical steps in the project development process, which could have potentially resulted in major issues in latter stages of the project. In addition to the challenges introduced due to the expedited time line for project completion, this project presented unique challenges due to its brownfield nature. One such challenge faced was the integration of the new equipment and control system software.Furthermore, the importance of the ID ore beneficiation plant (OBP) contribution to the companyÆs export commitments meant the upgrade work had to occur while minimising disruption to normal operation. This decision presented a set of new challenges to an already complex project. Operational effectiveness is fundamental to any operation, becoming highly topical in those experiencing less than optimal output from their fleets. It is all encompassing aiming to identify those factors that could be improved within production and suggesting solutions in order to optimise the existing fleet and obtain the greatest capital return on expenditure.Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) is a large open cut diamond mine located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 180 km south of Kununurra. It is owned and operated by Rio Tinto on a two week on/two week off roster fly-in/fly-out from Perth or drive in/drive out from Kununurra. Through benchmarking the operation between January and June 2002, a study was undertaken allowing identification of areas falling below target. Following this, analysis of annualised hours and production downtimes were undertaken to quantify the potential gains of improvements in these areas. Strategies were then identified as stated in the 2002 mine plan, in operational effectiveness meetings, and by staff members. This project aimed to maximise direct working hours through determination of the main issues hindering performance. External and internal factors were considered and a continuous improvement program (CIP) was developed. The CIP aimed at internal site-based improvement teams to identify and implement solutions for improvement on a day-to-day basis.

Surface subsidence induced by underground coal mining activities, especially longwall mining operations, can cause various problems to interstate highways ranging from structural integrity, drivability to safety. Accurate subsidence prediction, correct influence assessments, and effective mitigation measures are the keys to ensure the safety of highway traffic. The surface subsidence prediction program, called comprehensive and integrated subsidence prediction model (CISPM), was developed based on the principle of influence function method and has been validated with a large number of subsidence measurements. In this paper, the techniques to use the predicted final surface movements and deformations for assessing their influence on the integrity and functionality of highway structures (e.g., road surface pavements, concrete slabs, transverse joints, etc.), vehicle dynamics, comfort level, and drivability are presented. A number of mitigation measures to protect the highway structures and to ensure traffic safety are proposed along with an application case.

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.

"Adsorption of heavy metal ions specifically, Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution on synthetic 4A Zeolite was evaluated. The 4A zeolite was synthesized previously by dehydroxylation of low grade Kalabsha Kaolin at 800 °C, and reacted hydrothermally with 2-4 M NaOH solution at 100 °C for 2h. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions were found to be strongly dependent on pH and initial metal ion concentration. At the optimium conditions the adsorption capacity decreased in the order Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Cr(VI) ions. Almost complete adsorption was achieved for both of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions at pH > 6, while the adsorption capacity for both Mn(II) and Cr(VI) was 96, and 55.3 % at pH 11 and pH 3, respectively. The results also showed that the grain size of the 4A zeolite has a little effect on the adsorption capacity. The experimental data was compared with two adsorption isotherms, Langmuir and Freundlich isotheroms. The results showed a good agreement of the Langmuir plots with the experimental data.1. Increasing level of heavy metals in natural water bodies poses a serious threat to all living species including humans. Oceanic subduction-related volcanic frontal arcs extend over 20 000 km within the western Pacific basin and over 21 500 km worldwide, yet they remain largely unexplored with respect to active seafloor mineralization. Systematic exploration of 26 major submarine volcanoes along ~840 km of the Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand has documented ten (39 per cent) as being hydrothermally active. This frequency of venting is comparable to that on slow-to-moderate rate spreading mid-ocean ridges, which comprise ~80 per cent of the 60 000 km-long global system of spreading centers. The chemistry of fluids discharged from the Kermadec arc volcanoes is moderated by magmatic components in both the gaseous (CO2 + SO2-H2S) and liquid (Fe) phases at very high concentration.The high frequency of venting coupled with chemically rich discharge discovered during this first systematic survey of any arc system forecasts submarine arcs as being important sources of chemicals to the oceans and as potentially lucrative exploration sites for seafloor mineralization. The exploration protocols developed during these surveys include bathymetric mapping of mostly unknown volcanic edifices, followed by detailed water column profiling and sampling to detect and characterize volcanic fluid emission signatures. These procedures are being refined as the survey progresses, both for efficiency and as direct seafloor observations become available for predictive application of water column plume information to guide seafloor mineral exploration.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a continually developing numerical technique by which complex fluid flow problems can be solved on computers. To be able to transfer CFD expertise to analyze and design a face-ventilation system, a comprehensive validation study of current CFD tools against mining-related benchmark experiments is required. In the last four years, such studies, funded by National In¬stitute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) under Grant #R01 CCR415822, were conducted in the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky. A wide array of ventilation schemes and mining configurations were considered. Recently, an additional study was performed in cooperation with the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This study was dedicated to the methane behavior in the empty (containing no equipment) face area with a blowing curtain and a 10. 7-m (35-ft) setback. In this paper, the authors present and discuss the computer-simulation data and compare them with data collected during the laboratory studies at the NIOSH lab.

"Reeves and Platt1 stated that dense medium separation is one of the most complex unit processes in mineral processing today particularly if cyclones are used. It is also the most efficient gravity concentrating process available to process engineers. The complexity of the process and large number of design and operating variables means that the process has largely remained more an art than a science. Dense medium separation is well established in the diamond, coal and iron ore industries but is gaining popularity as a pre-concentration step in other industries. The maintenance issues are addressed that will affect the efficiency of the operation.INTRODUCTION The purpose of the dense medium separation (DMS) process is to separate the valuable material from the waste based on gravity differences. However, the specific gravity difference between the two fractions must be large enough to achieve high efficiencies. Heavy particles sink through the dense liquid and light particles float. DMS is also used for the pre-concentration of minerals before further downstream processes like communition, in order to minimise the treatment costs. Examples are the pre-concentration of diamond ores or metalliferous ores like nickel, copper and cobalt. Dense medium separation is also used to upgrade the material to meet different market specifications, for example in coal and iron ore applications. A typical dense medium separation process for a diamond application is shown in Figure 1."

In this paper, the surrounding rocks and the supports in a longwall are taken as an integral, i.e. a system. The structural characteristics and behavior of the system are discussed based on in-situ observations. A set of equations, which describe the interaction among the support, immediate roof and main roof, are developed. These equations can be used to design the longwall powered supports more reasonably and economically.

The limitation of fossil fuel resources and the necessity of reducing CO2emission require an increase of the efficiency of power plants by using combined cycle power systems. Pressurized Pulverized Coal Combustion (PPCC) is a potential concept to realise these objectives. The direct use of hot flue gas for driving a gas turbine requires a hot gas cleanup to achieve corrosion prevention of the turbine blading. One of the main problems is the alkali release during the coal combustion process. Molten coal ash slag has a high potential for alkali retention which depend son the alkali oxide activity in the slag. Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) was used to determine thermodynamic data of alkali gas species over molten coal ash slags and of alkali oxides in molten coal ash slags. The main interest of the investigations focused on the structural dependence of the thermodynamic properties of the alkalis. It was found that there is a strong correlation between the thermodynamic properties and the ratio of nonbridging oxygen to tetrahedral oxygen (NBO/T). An increase of the polymerization of the slag results in a decrease of the alkali oxide activity in the slag and thus a decrease of the alkali partial pressure over the slag. El presente trabajo describe el sistema experto por circuito de molienda desarrollado en la Concentradora Toquepala, donde se aplica la tecnología del control experto-basada en conjuntos difusos y modelos matemáticos. Las ventajas que presenta la aplicación de los sistemas expertos comprenden el aumento de la capacidad de tratamiento, la disminución del costo de operación y del porcentaje del producto que no cumple las especificaciones. Asímismo, el sistema experto se integra al sistema de control para asistir al operador en la detección de los casos, donde las operaciones se puedan descontrolar, aunque ésta no sea realmente su principal función. Si se le configura y sintoniza correctamente, el sistema experto detecta, diagnostica en forma continua los problemas de operación y aplica modelos matemáticos y estadísticos de optimización, interactúando con un sistema de control DCS o PLC.

South Africa’s best-quality coal, located in the central Highveld basin, is becoming depleted and alternative sources of coal, such as the Waterberg coalfield, will have to be developed to supply the country with coal in the future. The quality of the coal being mined in the central basin is gradually becoming poorer. This necessitates that more of the coal be processed to improve the quality to meet customer requirements. The challenge to the coal processing industry is to process low-yielding coals to produce goodquality products and at the same time ensure that coal mining remains economically viable. This requires that more cost-effective coal processing technologies be investigated and implemented.
