INTRODUCTION The Premise Not much time has to be spent in a tunneling project to realize the tremendous interdependence that exists among the various unit operations. The research that is to be described attempts to examine one set of these linked operations, namely, the effect of cutters on muck handling properties. All too often research focuses on too minute an aspect of a problem for the results to be of much immediate, practical use. The goal of this research is to avoid this specificity. Apologies are tendered if this goal is missed. It is known that the mode of flow of bulk solids under the influence of gravity -- emptying a bin or hopper -- is dependent on several basic parameters. The size of the particles and the distribution of sizes (consist) determine whether the solids will first flow out of a given aperture; the cohesion of the solids will determine if flow will continue after the bin is opened; and the angle of internal friction determines the size of the flow regime (1,2,3). It is well understood that the latter two parameters affect the behavior of bulk material on a conveyor belt. Cohesion of material to a belt is always an undesired problem. Heaping of material on a belt depends on the material's internal friction. It is also known that varying the particle size, and the packing density of the material can affect the material's angle of internal friction (4,5). The question was posed whether sufficient variation in a mechanical tunneling machine's (mole) cutting function could be arranged to affect materially the handling properties of the muck

Part I. The interaction between potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts has been studied thermo-chemically. It is shown that ethyl xanthate reacts with lead carbonate, basic carbonate, thiosulfate and sulfate according to principles of simple chemistry, whereas reactions with lead sulfite, metasulfite, basic thiosulfate and hydroxide at high pH are associated with secondary reactions. A new compound "xanthogen thiosulfate" is postulated. Part 11. Adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena has been studied quantitatively and thennochemi-cally. It is shown that an ion-exchange mechanism governs the adsorption process and that the heat of adsorption of xanthate on galena is equivalent to the heat of reaction of ethyl xanthate with bulk lead salts. It is concluded that the entropy content of the surface "compound" on galena is different from that of a corresponding bulk lead salt. Alkali depression is in part shown to be due to the instability of the xanthate-galena system at high pH and to the formation of basic lead salts. Sulfate and carbonate ions are shown to have a stabilizing effect on the xanthate-galena system. PARTI. THERMOCHEMISTRY OF ETHYL XANTHATE AND OF ITS REACTION WITH LEAD SALTS In the past little attention has been paid to the chemistry of lead xanthate. It is known that xan-thates form slightly soluble compounds with lead and that suspensions of lead xanthates in alkaline solution decompose rather readily.' The solubility of lead ethyl xanthate is of the order of 2.6 x 10-6 moles per 1. At increasing pH the xanthate concentration of a saturated solution contains more xanthate. Thus at pH 11 this xanthate content is about 100-fold larger than at pH 7.1 Xanthates are known to be consumed when added to a suspension of slightly soluble lead salts such as lead sulfate and lead carbonate. It is unknown to what extent this xanthate consumption is due to a simple chemical reaction because, frequently, observations are made which reveal secondary reaction products in such reactions. Thermochemical study of the reaction between xanthate and lead salts offers a means to clarify the significance of these reactions as the enthalpy changes can be accurately predicted from heat of formation of lead salts in pure solution reactions. In the present work the heats of formation of lead ethyl xanthate from potassium ethyl xanthate and lead salts are determined and some thermochemical aspects of xanthate in solution are studied. The results of these investigations are presented in Part I. In Part II the heat of adsorption of ethyl xanthate on galena surfaces is presented. All enthalpy changes were measured directly in a microcalorimeter. The use of carbide tipped integral drill steels and detachable bits is discussed in relation to the means of drilling or cutting employed. It is stressed that only by correct use can the full value of these tools be realised.Factors affecting carbide quality, the design of shanking steels and the requirements and techniques of brazing in inserts are considered.It is essential that the brazed jointing between carbide and steel be strong but ductile. The methods used for the manufacture of carbide tipped tools are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the application of tungsten carbide to various mining tools in the mining industry, has developed to the stage where it is now regarded as an essential item in the production of coal and metal ores. In fact it is claimed that certain mining operations would not be possible if it were not for the benefits obtainable from the characteristic properties of tungsten carbide. The advantages of this hardmetal have, to some extent, influenced manufacturers to revise design specifiations of some machines, while againsome machines have actually been designed with tungsten carbide as their basic medium for operation.In general the applications fall into the following three categories:(a) Drilling hard rock by percussive means.(b) Drilling soft rock and coal by rotary means.(c) Coal cuttingThis paper is concerned with tungsten carbide tools associated with these three activities in Australia, the effectiveness of their application and significant points in their design and manufacture.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, silicon, solar cells Silicon has been the dominant material in the photovoltaic (PV) industry since its application in the space industry in 1958. This review focuses on crystalline silicon solar cells, primarily due to their dominance in the photovoltaic industry, omitting other photovoltaic cell technologies such as second generation (e.g. thin films) and third generation (e.g. nano-structured solar cells). The value chain for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells has been reviewed. The primary processing steps for the production of silicon solar cells from quartz are as follows: bulk production of metallurgical-grade silicon via carbothermic reduction in a submerged furnace, refining of metallurgical-grade silicon via the chemical means to polycrystalline silicon, or through the metallurgical route to solar-grade silicon, wafer manufacturing, and, lastly, silicon solar cell manufacturing. During downstream processing, solar cells are interconnected and encapsulated into solar modules (panels), which can be used individually or incorporated into a photovoltaic system for electricity generation and supply. The cost for crystalline silicon based solar cells is approaching one US dollar per watt peak ($1/Wp), while the most cost-effective solar modules in industry have reported costs below $1/Wp, and are based on CdTe thin films. Solar cell energy conversion efficiencies as high as 22% have been reported in industry for crystalline silicon solar cells.

Roof support systems are necessary to provide stable mine openings and much research has been conducted to design a variety of roof support systems that will function in various manners to ensure that stable ground conditions are achieved. Despite these advancements in technology, mistakes continue to be made in the evaluation and/or installation that significantly degrade the support capability or lead to erroneous determinations of support expectations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss misconceptions about how roof supports perform and factors that impact their performance. The goal is to present practical information that will assist mine operators and engineers in selecting, installing, and evaluating roof support systems properly, and help them to avoid mistakes that can lead to erroneous expectations and potentially catastrophic results that may lead to roof falls. The paper is limited to a discussion of secondary roof support systems and powered roof supports such as longwall shields.

Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Since 1954, much drilling, mapping, and quarrying has been done but there is no published report of this work.The rocks which constitute the Middleback Range, Camel Hill-Cooyerdoo line, Katunga Hill-Iron Knob, and Ash Range (Fig. 1) belong to the Middleback Group of Middle Precambrian or late Archaean age. Now that the copper market appears to be making a turn for the better, those years spent investing in technology by equipment manufacturers and forward-thinking mining companies should begin paying off.

"The characterisation of resources and description of variability across different ore domains is key to accurate prediction of probable metallurgical performance. Such characterisation testwork often has limited drill-core from which to work and this immediately confines the characterisation method to smallscale. For flotation feeds, the JKMSI (Mineral Separability Indicator) is being developed as a potential characterisation tool, building on earlier work by Chudacek, (1990), which used shaken test tubes, and was called the EMDEE device. In addition, the consistency of flotation recovery for specified size fractions has shown to be preserved, irrespective of the amount of material in that size fraction obtained by different milling conditions, so that the overall recovery can be estimated from knowing the particle size distribution (McIvor and Finch, 1991; Bazin et al, 1994, Runge, 2007 and Wightman et al, 2010) The JKMSI unit uses less than 10 g of material per test in narrowly sized classes and results to date have demonstrated the value of the test. This paper discusses the potential of the test by demonstrating the link between JKMSI performance and mineralogy of five different ores from Laguna Seca, Escondida Minera Limitada as well as the correlation to plant scale performance obtained in an earlier survey (Coleman et al, 2006). Further work to tie down the proof of representatively of the small sample has been identified and is discussed and included in the paper. INTRODUCTIONSince the uptake of the flotation process at the turn of the twentieth century, small scale, laboratory methods have been sought to characterise flotation response. Although laboratory batch flotation tests are the most widely used method to evaluate reagents, characterise ore variability and obtain suitable model parameters using various scale up factors Runge (2101) other methods using less ore would be useful where ore samples were limited.A method using test tubes for testing ores’s flotation response to reagents was first developed by Ian Walk (Wark & Wark, 1935; Wark; 1938; Sutherland and Wark 1955). In these tests a 50 cc stoppered measuring cylinder served as a means for a qualitative experiment, the aeration being effected through violent shaking by hand. In these experiments about 10 g of mineral was ground by pestle and mortar under water after which the ground material was deslimed and adequately conditioned with the appropriate reagents."

Significant movement to an existing slurry wall which serves as a retaining wall on 'O' Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. initiated the Department of Public Works for the District of Columbia to invite specialty contractors to propose a rehabilitation and stabilization for the failed slurry wall. Nicholson Construction Company proposed and was awarded a contract for the construction of an anchored precast lagging and soldier pile wall to be located approximately 4 feet in front of the existing structure with granular fill placed between the new and existing walls. Stabilization of the existing slurry wall also included drilling horizontal weep holes and demolishing the failed panels down to the existing ground surface. A new and improved drainage system was also constructed to increase the amount of water directed toward the existing storm sewer system running along 'O' Street. This paper provides a detailed account of these construction activities.

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the influence of hydrodynamics on a preflotation process for the copper sulfide ore from the Fore-Sudetic Monocline deposits in Poland in a flotation machine. The main aim of the preflotation stage for Polish copper ore is to remove the easy-to-float organic matter — organic carbon — that causes serious problems in metallurgical processes. The organic matter is connected with the presence of shale ore. This paper describes the preflotation experiments conducted to investigate the effect of various stirrer speeds. The upgrading selectivity of copper and organic carbon were analyzed and compared. The results show that the effectiveness of separation between organic carbon and copper decreases with increased stirrer speed in the laboratory flotation machine. The more intensive the mixing of the flotation suspension, the lower the selectivity of the preflotation experiment. Lower stirrer speed probably provides lower mechanical entrainment and flotation of copper minerals.

The ever more present necessity for greater precision in foundation structures on vertical piles subject to horizontal forces applied to the heads, in the light of of the latest knowledge about the elastic-plastic behaviour of the soil has led to the use of numerical calculation for the formulation of a general resolution method for the problem. The calculation method that will be set out, applicable to piles with inertia moments variable discreetly along their axes is especially useful when studying steel structures for medium and large tonnage vessels for which the metal piles are often constructed for the assembly of section of equal external diameter but different thickness and therefore different inertia moments. Two examples are given of constructions whose foundations have been projected with these calculation tools, one in the railway sector (foundation pile for the river Nera viaduct - Italy) important for the limitation of horizontal relative deck displacement, the other maritime (Dolphins of the petroleum pier of the port of Bandar Abbas - Iran).

Tendon support systems have been successfully used to stabilize excavations. Tendon support systems are routinely designed using the axial load-bearing capacity of tendons, namely the tensile strength. To attain tensile strength the tendon must be loaded along its length, which often does not occur in practice. Tendons should optimally be installed at 90° to the surface of the excavation to achieve maximum penetration depth, yet this is often not physically or practically possible, and installations at angles less than 90° occur. Furthermore, the intersection of geological features within the rock mass frequently results in complex loading situations on tendons. The position and angle at which loading occurs results in different combinations of tensile and shear forces acting on the tendon, which can impact on the support performance of each unit and ultimately the whole system. All factors that influence the support system should be understood and taken into account to ensure a sound support design. Combination loading situations are further investigated and tested to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and the effects on tendon load-bearing capacity. Tendon support units were tested at different installation angles to establish the tendon performance, mechanical behaviour, and load capacity during these loading situations. The results and outcomes are aimed at providing rock engineers with additional data and improved understanding of how tendons could perform under certain conditions.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

"Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

This paper reports on recent field observations on the performance of support systems under different corrosion environments in Canadian underground mines. Phenomenological data are used to gain a better understanding of the main causes of corrosion in underground metal mines. Preliminary field data collected from five metal mines have been complemented by atmospheric and water sample analysis as well as fractography and metallographic studies. This has identified dominant factors that control the corrosion of support systems. The data are analysed in order to develop a support strategy for mines operating in corrosion environments.

Research was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to assess the technical feasibility of smelting cement-copper precipitate in an electric furnace to produce commercial-grade copper. The blister-grade copper produced in smelting was refined by gaseous oxidation and reduction methods to rive a product equal in quality to fire-refined copper. The cement copper used in the study was typical of the material produced in commercial operations. The sample product was received in a partially oxidized state and analyzed 77.5 percent Cu, 3.4 percent Fe, 0.8 percent Pb, 0.05 percent Ni, 0.6 percent Sn, and 0.9 percent S. Smelting tests were made on the precipitate using laboratory-size induction and electric-arc furnaces. Three types of furnace linings were tested during, the investigation: Carbon, including graphite; clay-graphite; and silicon carbide. Although all proved satisfactory, either carbon or graphite was preferred because of their superior refractory properties and low permeability to molten copper. Copper recoveries in the induction and arc smelting tests averaged 92 percent in commercial-grade metal assaying 99.8 percent copper. Refining the molten copper by oxidation and gaseous reduction or by chlorine lancing increased the purity to plus 99.9 percent.

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.
