In this study, nickel containing iron alloys were produced by carbothermal reduction of lateritic nickel ores obtained from Manisa - Caldag region of Turkiye in order to investigate the reaction mechanism of nickel and cobalt. In the experiments, the lateritic ore containing 1.58 wt.% Ni and 0.12 wt.% Co was calcined in a semi-pilot scale rotary furnace at 1100°C for 1 hour. Then, a mixture of calcined ore and metallurgical coke was reacted in sintered alumina crucibles using a graphite resistance tube furnace at different time (0- 60 min) and temperature (1500-1600°C).

Vale Inco?s Coleman Mine 153 Orebody is a narrow vein deposit with a dip that varies from 30 to 70 degrees. It has a strike length of 1200-feet and the current mining extends from the 4250 level to 5100 level. The primary mining method is mechanized cut-and-fill although drift-and-fill is also used in wider sections of the ore zone. The ore body is divided into six main mining horizons with an average of three mining blocks on each cut. There are some interesting rock mechanics challenges related to mining upward from the 4550 level and these challenges are increasing as the mining front progresses toward the 4400 level. The mining of the 4550 block is currently at cut 13 whereby the crown pillar thickness is approximately 60-feet. Significant factors including increased stress levels in the crown pillar, the change in the orebody dip at this level and a recently indentified geological structure in the footwall, have all combined to introduce seismic activity in the footwall of 4550 level. Closer studies revealed a consistent trend of seismicity that was further examined with core logging and Acoustic TeleViewer technology. The data from these assessment tools disclosed a geological structure that is influencing the mining environment. This paper reviews the seismic analysis for the 4550 level mining zone and the subsequent procedures used to locate the new geological structure. The paper also discusses the key mining practices used to successfully mine cut 13 of 4550 level and briefly reviews the studies that are underway to up-date the mine design for continued extraction of high-grade ore in a safe and productive manner.

For the last 150 years, subsidence damage to the surface has been an unavoidable phenomenon associated with underground coal mining. In particular, the mechanization of mining methods in multiple seam mining and the concentration of mining activities in densely populated European metropolitan areas (e.g., Ruhr, Upper Silesian industrial region) have led to mining having a very strong influence on the earth?s surface. In both these regions, surface subsidence of more than 20m has been reported up to now in comparison to the original state. Underground coal mining in these regions strongly impairs all kinds of surface use, such as urban and industrial development, infrastructure (roads, waterways, and railways) and pipelines?without restricting the functionality of those objects to a greater extent. Demanding and, in some cases, globally unique engineering solutions have been developed and implemented for this purpose. The previously mentioned mining and industrial regions are still very strongly characterized by the (increasingly declining) coal industry and will remain dependent to a large extent and for an indefinite period on artificial drainage measures because subsidence that has already occurred is irreversible. This paper will primarily discuss the prediction of subsidence that is caused by intensive multiple seam mining and its influence on surface objects (e.g., underground pipelines). However, an approach for predicting ground uplifts due to rising mine water as a consequence of mine closures will also be described.

INTRODUCTION When divers discovered that sections of a tunnel housing the pipeline that conveys wastewater from the Charleston Peninsula to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Facility had caved in, the Charleston Commissioners of Public Works(CPW) moved quickly to determine a long term solution for the city’s collection system, immediately focusing on the Ashley River sewer tunnel along the western boundary of the peninsula. Working with the Charleston community, as well as federal, state, and local officials, CPW developed a fast track yet long life design that can be used as a model for underground construction of tunnels in urban areas. The paper that follows summarizes key aspects of the Ashley River sewer tunnel project. HISTORICAL CHARLESTON Charleston, South Carolina is a culturally significant and historic city that was originally settled in 1670. There are over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places within the Charleston area. Additionally, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor in 1861. As one can imagine, tourism generates significant business for the area with over 1.5 million people visiting Charleston each year. No project, especially one that requires digging, is done within the old city on the Charleston peninsula without careful planning. Many precautions are necessary to prevent damage or disruption to the historical properties. The Ashley River sewer tunnel project is exclusively in the old city. A lot of work was done during the design phase to minimize the impact to historical properties. Some of this work included: an archeological study (where pre-digs were monitored at all shaft sites by an archeologist); a building/structure assessment study (where structures near a shaft site were completely surveyed and cataloged); and an environmental study.

Next year, in 1964, Butte will celebrate its Centennial. It was in May, 1864, that the first recorded mining activity took place. During that summer, several rich placers were found on Silver Bow Creek and its tributaries, and a gold rush followed. As placer mining proceeded in the creek beds, the quartz lodes on the hillsides were located and the veins were prospected. Mining in Butte entered its second phase when the rich silver mines, the Alice, Moulton, and Lexington, were opened. The silver boom lasted until the decline in the price of silver in the early 1890's forced the closure of many of the mines. An indication of the beginning of the copper mining era in Butte was in 1866 when it was noticed that green copper carbonate discolored some of the, lode material. It was not until ten years later, however, that the Anaconda and St. Lawrence claims were located by Michael and Ed Hickey. The claims were sold in 1880 to Marcus Daly and in 1881, Daly obtained financing and organized the Anaconda Silver Mining Company to exploit the vein The silver venture was a failure because of the predominance of copper which diluted the bullion to only 400 fine.

La base comprende 17 procesos que conforman el SIG según la filosofía del PDCA, los que han sido agrupados como: Política, Planificación, Implementación, Evaluación, Mejora y Revisión de la Alta Dirección. Dado que la comunidad de Michiquillay recibe una gran cantidad del canon minero a través de la gestión de la Municipalidad del mismo nombre, se planteó mejorar las relaciones de parentesco y la inmersión en la modernidad económica y socia de dicha comunidad y pasar de una economía informal a una economía social o solidaria. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el proyecto de participación colectiva entre los miembros de la comunidad Michiquilllay y La Encañada, con el objetivo de construir una propuesta de privatización del proyecto minero Michicallay. El trabajo de campo se realizó en los ocho sectores y se desarrolló desde hace dos años, alcanzando la comunicación y sostenibilidad del mismo.

DURING the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.1 The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by B. T. Putnam,2 J. C. Smock,3 A. H. Chester,4 and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. Ever since the use of the cone penetration test (CPT) in geotechnical practice, attempts have been made to correlate CPT parameters with pile capacity components of unit end bearing (qb) and unit shaft resistance (fp), thus deriving multiple CPT-based pile design methods. These methods focus on "capacity" only without consideration to complete axial pile load-displacement (Q-w) response. Estimated capacities from these methods also exhibit considerable scatter without any consensus on their consistency. In addition, load-displacement curves obtained from axial load tests on highly expensive and extensively instrumented piles can exhibit different shapes. Nevertheless, a single value from the curve so obtained dictates the design capacity. Currently, there are at least 42 different criteria defining capacity with considerable variation in the values obtained thereof. The Randolph elastic solution, which provides a framework for analytical evaluation of pile load-displacement response, requires the profiles of soil stiffness. The fundamental soil stiffness defined by the small-strain shear modulus (Gmax) can be obtained from shear wave velocity (Vs) readings via seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). The secant stiffness (G), which softens from Gmax corresponding to operational load levels, can be obtained by generating stiffness reduction curves from back analysis of load tests. Then, using appropriate G values, the Q-w curve can be defined for conditions similar to the database from the pseudo strain (w/d). Thus, a complete framework for optimal integration of SCPTu data, Randolph elastic solution and back-analysis of field operational stiffness can be established for complete axial pile foundation analysis.

"The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently obtained a Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). CAMP has utilized the technology for several projects with excellent results. The MLA is able to both analyze size and quantify mineral phases. Therefore, the MLA is becoming the Sherlock Holmes of the mining and metallurgical industry. For this presentation, four projects have been evaluated and data was collected using the MLA. The first project involved tungsten mine. Previous mining practices have yielded poor tungsten results and recoveries. By using the MLA, tungsten mineral phases, along with possible contaminants, were verified and the results used to try to increase overall tungsten recoveries. The second project evaluated a molybdenite/chalcopyrite concentrate with surprising results. The third project is a silver project. Initial flotation scoping tests were performed by attempting to separate silver from gangue material. Because of the poor recovery results (less than 5%), MLA was used to determine possible scenarios for increasing silver recovery. Finally, the last project involves gold evaluation in tailings. For all projects, MLA application results will be presentedand discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently received a software add-on to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) located at Montana Tech. The Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) technology was developed by Dr. Ying Gu of the JKTech Center of the University of Queensland. Since August 2006, CAMP has received and processed over 50 samples. These samples include a total mineralogy of tungsten ore samples, gold tailings, lead zinc tailings pile, molybdenite concentrates, copper concentrates, as well as others. During analysis of these received samples, the technology allows the samples to be quantified mineralogically with some surprising results.For analysis, the samples were initially sieved between 170 to 200 screen sized mesh. This ensures that received samples mineral size is fairly uniform. The samples are then placed into epoxy and allowed to harden. Next, the samples are polished and carbon coated for MLA analysis."

The design and construction of foundations for power transmission line towers present some special problems. This paper describes a system of design and construction for these foundations that was developed in Europe and has attained general use there because of its reliability and cost effectiveness. Transmission line foundations distinguish themselves by having to deal not only with compressive and lateral loads, but with uplift loads and, because of the wind (in some regions earthquakes), with dynamic loading. The construction of transmission line foundations distinguishes itself mainly in the great number of inaccesible locations involved, resulting in extensive geotechnical investigation and logistical problems in moving men, materials and equipment.

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. This publication summarizes the Bureau's activities as part of a study of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) during the period 1984-1988. The objectives of the program were to identify the type, amount, and distribution of mineral deposits in the district, determine ore reserves, study beneficiation technologies for the ore, make feasibility studies, and address economic and legislative effects on mineral development. The JMD study was a cooperative study involving the Bureau and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS). Over 30 employee-years were spent by the Bureau on this project. Bureau investigations in the JMD consisted of a district-wide investigation of industrial materials in addition to site-specific investigations of precious and base metals in five subareas. During the 4 years of the JMD study, more than 300 areas, mines, prospects, and occurrences were visited, which contain gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, and platinum group metals (PGM). More than 59,000 feet of underground workings were mapped and sampled. More than 5,500 samples were taken; one diamond drilling program and three geophysical surveys were completed. An up-to-date and complete mineral data base for the JMD did not exist prior to this study. The JMD study, which coincided with a tremendous increase in mineral interest and activity in the district, has proven to be valuable to both the minerals industry and land management agencies. The discovery of two new mineral occurrences and compilation of data on known mines, prospects, and occurrences have aided industry activity in the region. The study enabled timely data to be available to land management agencies at the Federal, State, and municipal levels.

Mine management is often expected to make rapid evaluation decisions at different stages of projects based on limited and uncertain data. The challenge is exacerbated by having to distil technical complexity into a financial model that is usually designed to produce only one or two key indicators, eg net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR). Mining is a complex environment with many sources of uncertainty ranging from sampling to economics. In order to optimise investment decision-making, an appropriately structured evaluation framework must be utilised. An evaluation framework should be designed to encapsulate and integrate the complexity across the evaluation cycle, ie sampling, resource estimation, mine planning and treatment, and financial and economic modelling. This complexity is diverse and ranges from sampling support, scale effects to understanding the impact of variability, uncertainty and flexibility on operational efficiency and economic viability. These complexities, combined with time and capital constraints, usually do not allow all facets of evaluation to be integrated into the model. The model must strike a balance between simplified estimation techniques and sufficient incorporation of aspects of the project that will make a material difference to the investment decision. This paper demonstrates the impact of the scale of measurement on the valuation of a mineral project. Comparisons are made between global estimation averages using a top-down approach and local estimates using a bottom-up approach. Three sampling campaigns were conducted on a virtual orebody to compare the relative NPV accuracies. Stochastic forward models were run on foreign exchange rates and are compared with the results from a fixed foreign exchange rate model.

"More Skill is needed to avoid rather than to handle heavy ground loads." This finding, from a tunneling engineer of the nineteenth century, is still relevant today with all advanced sequential excavation and support methods available whether they are applied in the vertical or horizontal direction. Balanced contractual agreements and documents are important since they provide the spirit and climate at the site. This article aims to describe the means and measures for 'hand mined' shaft and tunnel support as they are available today. Some special construction elements and methods with a perspective in recent developments in order to avoid getting stuck in conservatism are presented as well. If we don't allow new methods, means and measures we may end up with the famous quote "Only women who have already proven they are able to give birth to a healthy baby are allowed to become pregnant!"

This paper describes results obtained in a test program performed with new equipment, called Mini Pilot Plant, manufactured by Canadian Process Technologies. This equipment was acquired by CVRD aiming at testing flotation circuits, in a continuous closed configuration, with samples obtained from drill cores. Success of this goal would allow CVRD to establish the metallurgical performance of mineral deposits with more confidence in comparison to Locked Cycle Tests (LCT). This paper discusses the importance of assessing the ore variability and compares results obtained in LCTs and Mini Pilot Plant. Results suggest that more reliable data is obtained in MPP test.

The Manapouri Power Station is New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility located on the South Island of New Zealand. Constructed in the 1960’s, it includes a 700 MW under-ground power station and a 9.8 km (6.1 mile), 9.2 m (30 ft) diameter tailrace tunnel. The output of the power station is currently limited due to excessive head losses in the tailrace tunnel. To remedy this situation, the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand (ECNZ) retained Woodward-Clyde to design a second tailrace tunnel and appurtenant facilities and prepare Contract Documents for construction. The Project will involve the construction of a 9.8 km(6.1 miles), 10 m (33 ft) diameter, TBM-mined tunnel, hydraulic control structures at the upstream and downstream ends of the tunnel, an underground dewatering shaft and station, and tailrace channel improvements. This paper summarizes the key design and construction issues addressed during the planning and design phases, outlines the risk management provisions incorporated in the Contract, and overviews the Interactive Tender Process (ITP)that was implemented during the pre-tendering and tendering periods.

A coal mine impoundment failure has the potential to be environmentally devastating and life-threatening. It is well documented that after seismic events slope failures in impoundments can occur. It has been concluded that often the main driven factor of the failure is the increase in excess pore pressure due to ground vibration. A small amount of research has been done regarding the stability of coal mine impoundments under natural seismic events; however no research has been done considering vibrations from mine blasts. If it is taken into account that current environmental restrictions oblige to increase the capacity of coal mine impoundments, thus increasing the hazard of such structures, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of near-by mine blasting on the stability of the coal mine impoundments in order to mitigate and control the potential of slope failures. To study the behavior of excess pore pressure under blasting conditions, scaled simulations of production blasting events were set up inside of a controlled sand tank. The research was divided in two stages. The first one was done, using dry conditions, while in the second part, the same set of tests were performed under saturated conditions. This document shows the partial results for stage one (dry conditions). For the tests, explosive charges were set off within the sand tank at various distances to simulate different blasting distances. Information was collected from geophones, accelerometers, microphones and high speed video camera for dry and saturated scenarios and additionally from piezometers under saturated conditions to assess the behavior of the material under blasting conditions.

In responding to why some longwall roadway development rates are different among mines, the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG) of Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has initiated a benchmarking study to survey each longwall mine to determine the correlation between roadway development practices and roadway development performances. This paper describes a web-based relational database system which has been developed purposely to monitor the performance of Australian longwall roadway developments aimed at assessing both the physical and operational factors which could influence roadway development practices and their performance indicators. Statistical analysis of an earlier survey suggested that continuous miner units that achieved more than 1750 m were units mining two-heading development.

The need to establish and harmonise methodologies to quantify air emissions, atmospheric dispersion and the consequences of air pollutants (especially hexavalent chromium) from the ferrochrome industry became important aspects with the increasing demands for comprehensive impact assessments. The paper includes a synthesis of current knowledge on the following aspects: ? Locally and internationally accepted methodologies for the quantification of chromium emissions, including sampling methods and emission factors; ? A compilation of recognised and accepted air quality sampling and laboratory analysing techniques; and, ? Dispersion modelling and impact assessment tools. Depositing and removing materials from the chromium ore stockpile and wind erosion of exposed stockpiles result in mainly chromite emissions unlikely to contain significant amounts of hexavalent chromium. Pre-treatment processes such as drying, crushing and screening also produces chromium emissions, but mainly as trivalent chromium. The smelting of chromium is the major source of chromium emissions - open furnaces have the highest uncontrolled chromium emissions, followed by semi-closed and closed furnaces, respectively. Based on the current knowledge on emission rates, interim emission factors for particulate, total chromium and hexavalent chromium releases are provided. Ambient sampling and analytical methods to determine environmental exposure of the general public require that hexavalent chromium needs to be quantified in very low concentrations. Suggested sampling and analytical methods for both source characterisation and ambient monitoring are provided. The selection between dispersion models needs to be based on the size of the modelling domain and the complexity of the terrain. The discussion on dispersion models includes the US EPA?s Industrial Source Complex Model (Version 3), the AERMET/AERMOD suite of models and the CALMET/CALPUFF suite of models. Guidelines are also proposed for environmental exposure assessments including cancer and non-cancer health effects.
