"The commissioning of the 4th concentrator (C4) at Freeport Indonesia in early 1998 increased total mill throughput from 130k to 230k tonnes per day. The C4 flowsheet consists of a single 38 ft diameter SAG mill, four 24 ft diameter ball mills followed by four banks of 4,500 ft3 WEMCO flotation cells.The design of the C4 rougher flotation circuit was based on the expectation that the copper and gold recoveries achieved with the 4500 ft3 flotation cells would be equivalent to or better than that achieved with the 3,000 ft3 flotation cells in the 3rd concentrator (C3) rougher circuit. This assumption was due to the fact that the C4 flotation feed size would be less than 15% +212 microns compared to the C3 rougher flotation feed size of less than 23% +212 microns. By mid 1998 it had become apparent that the C4 rougher flotation copper and gold recoveries were below those predicted.In order to determine the cause of the lower recoveries, stage by stage rougher flotation surveys were performed in all four concentrators. The results of the surveys showed that the C4 rougher flotation circuit had a lower recovery of +200 micron material than that achieved in the C 1, C2 and C3 concentrators. Through mineralogical analysis, it was determined that a majority of the copper contained in the +200 micron fractions was liberated and recoverable. This paper describes the steps taken to increase coarse particle recovery, overall plant recovery and the results achieved."

In the synthesis of diamond, the precursor graphite must present a degree of crystallinity to assure optimum yield and quality for the transformed crystals. X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM analyses were carried out to investigate the structural and morphologic transformations produced in natural graphite by high pressure-high temperature treatment. The present study had as its objective to characterize the morphological and structural changes suffered by a natural graphite that was subjected to high pressure and high temperature treatments in the region of diamond thermodynamic stability. The results indicate that the material that constitutes the gasket, for the deformable capsule, could act as catalyst in the graphite recrystallization process.

Tan investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

"In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."

"Every project is different. While “conventional” SAG and ball mill circuits will suit many projects, for others there are alternatives, which may produce improved outcomes. This paper examines particular examples of recent front end designs which either went against conventional thinking or which employed “out of the box” thinking to realize the desired results.One such example is the design strategy employed for a small capacity gold plant in Victoria, Australia. The selection of HPGR technology for small capacity projects is not generally favoured, given the relatively high cost of small HPGR machines. However, the unusual size distribution of the gold and its liberation characteristics were expected to lead to improved gold recovery offsetting the higher capital cost.Another example is the first large scale application of milling in acid for copper recovery, at a project in south east Asia. The stainless steel, single stage SAG mill using ceramic grinding media was more expensive than a mill constructed of conventional materials. However, the steps of scrubbing, slurrying, grinding and leaching could all be achieved in a single unit operation and the need for thickening and repulping with acid after milling was eliminated.Rod mills were selected for both primary and secondary milling duties for another south east Asian project despite their somewhat outdated reputation. A review of previous industry experience confirmed that rod mills could outperform conventional rod/ball or SAG/ball circuits in cases where the size distribution of the ground product is critical to downstream recovery.These examples are discussed with particular focus on the key drivers in each case."

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

The question of the desirability of recovering cullet from MSW in order to recycle it into the manufacturing of glass containers remains a controversial one. The main factors appear to be: 1. The position of the Glass Container Manufacturers Institute (GCMI), as the trade association for most container manufacturers, is that post-consumer cullet is a vital source of raw material. Present requirements are for: a) Flint cullet b) Non-flint cullet of known mix proportions c) Mixed unsorted cullet of known mix propertions c) Mixed or non-flint cullet of unknown mix proportions. A market balance for these products exists, and this might somewhat limit the outlets for (b), (c) and (d), or severely limit the outlet for (d) alone. 2. The color specifications are rather strict. With cullet admixtures of 20% of the melt or more, and the use of decolorisers in a flint furnace discouraged because their action is reducing in a process which requires an oxidising environment, color contamination in a flint furnace is serious.. For amber and green furnaces (reducing) it is less serious, but in order that the quantity of decolorisers may be controlled, the color balance (as a measure of the Fe and Cr content) of the admixtured cullet should be known. 3. Why not simply color analyze, either by a continuous on-stream or off-stream: photo-electronic analysis, or by systematic batch sampling (with some kind off electronic surveillance of the mainstream) and just send mixed, color measured cullet to only amber and green furnaces? The flint would-be simply included in the mix. This is probably technically feasible, but is subject to the market limitations noted in point1.

What is a nugget effect? In the early development of geostatistics, the term ?nugget effect? was coined for the apparent discontinuity at the beginning of many semi-variogram graphs. This name was chosen to reflect the large differences found between neighbouring samples in ?nuggety? mineralizations such as Wits gold reefs. Geostatistical theory assumes that the difference between a sampled value and a potential repeat sample at the same location is actually zero. Included in this ?nugget effect? would be true variation between contiguous samples due to the nature of the mineralization, micro-fracturing, nugget or crystal size and so on. Also included in the nugget effect would be any ?random? sampling variation which might occur due to the method in which the sample was taken, the adequacy of the sample size, the assaying process, etc. Arguments were put forward that ?sampling errors? actually exist at zero distance. Some geostatistical schools actually maintain that ?nugget effect? is all sampling error. This would imply that ?perfect? sampling would eliminate the nugget effect entirely. There is now a dichotomy both in the geostatistical world and in the software packages provided for geostatistical analyses. It may seem academic to argue over whether the semi-variogram model should take a value of zero, a value equal to the nugget effect or a partial value at distance zero. However, the decision can have a profound effect on both the estimated resource and in our confidence on that resource. Whereas most geostatistical texts define the semi-variogram model as taking the value of zero at zero distance, others imply that the full nugget effect should be used at zero distance. For example: ?The nugget effect refers to the nonzero intercept of the variogram and is an overall estimate of error caused by measurement inaccuracy and environmental variability occurring at fine enough scales to be unresolved by the sampling interval3. ?Christensen4 has shown that the ?nugget effect?, or non-zero variance at the origin of the sernivariogram, can be reproduced by a measurement error model. ?The nugget effect is considered random noise and may represent short-scale variability, measurement error, sample rate, etc.5. In many training texts and web courses, the definition of the semi-variogram is ambiguous as the formulae for semi-variogram models is not actually specified at zero distance6,7,8.

THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a stand¬ard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. In the HC FeMn production, better utilisation of coke and electric power is vital for reducing the production costs. The higher manganese oxides in the charge are reduced to MnO in the prereduction zone, where also the Boudouard reaction is active. These gas-solid reactions are to a large extent decisive for the total consumption of both coke and electrical power in ferromanganese production. In the present work formulas for calculating the Degree of prereduction have been developed for industrial practice. It shows that the typical Degree of prereduction is between 10-40%, but it may in good periods be as high as 60%. Statistical analysis has been done in order to find how various operational parameters influence the Degree of prereduction. A few parameters were observed to have an effect on the prereduction. Comilog ore definitely had a positiveinfluence on the prereduction, Comilog sinter and Mamatwan ore probably had a positive influence on the prereduction, all in relation to the average prereduction in the selected periods. Meanwhile, As man ore definitely, % H2O in raw materials and increasing Hd probably, had a negative influence on the prereduction. The findings for these raw materials were very much in coherence with the results of laboratory scale experiments performed, where the CO-reactivity of different ore materials was studied.

THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established .R3 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. "Data will be produced from two uranium feasibility studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. Excellent metallurgical results were produced in RIP pilot plants in both studies, and the loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled to RIP in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low.Metallurgical results from these two campaigns will be presented, along with an economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative process of CCD or filtration and solvent extraction.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of uranium directly from pulp with strong base resins in RIP contactors was practiced commercially in the USA in the 1960s, but the process never established itself as a viable alternative to solid/liquid separation and solvent extraction. This was due mainly to the necessity to do a sand-slime separation partially resulting from the unavailability of coarse resin beads, inadequacies in the design of the RIP contactors and screens to separate resin from pulp, as well as problems with the strength and durability of resins in agitated pulps.There have been significant advances in the last 30 years in each of these areas. All the commercial resin manufacturers are now producing very tough, durable, strong base resins, and are manufacturing them in a large bead size that is better suited to RIP applications. In addition, with the emergence and wide spread implementation of the carbon in pulp process in the gold industry in the 1980s, many innovative techniques for preparing leached slurries and separating carbon from pulp have become firmly established. These techniques have proven to be equally applicable to resin separation from pulps in RIP contactors."

A study was carried out to determine the effects of adding CaCO3, Fe, Al and CaSi2 to the ladle, rather than to the raw materials, in order to increase the concentration of Ca, Fe and Al in the final product to meet customer specifications at Simcoa's Kemerton plant in Western Australia. LA-ICP-MS, SEM-EDXRA and ICP-AES analysis of samples and controls showed that the technique is suitable for controlling minor element concentrations. A"" improved damage model based on microcrack growth in tension allows finite elementcalculations which remain stable at late times. Blasting activities on the surface or underground necessarily involve the most sensitive aspect of environment remediation, human response or annoyance. Such effects are unavoidably characteristic of those activities. For this reason, blasting activities are governed by law and official regulations under surveillance of authorities, where companies and explosives engineers have to proceed within proper limits. Subject of the paper is a practical way of handling some necessary vibration standards being focused on blasting activities. Keywords: Self-propagating high temperature synthesis, AlN, Powder synthesis The particle size and shape effects of starting raw powders on the synthesis of aluminum nitride by self-propagating high temperature technique under high nitrogen pressure were investigated with various AlN diluents and Al reactants. It was found that the structure of beds of the starting raw particles largely affected the pore channels for nitrogen gas infiltration as well as the passages for combustion propagation before and during the reaction, resulting in the morphology and purity changes of the synthesized products. The AlN product of purity over 98% with about 30 microns was obtained.
