The thick alluvial sand and gravel deposits along the base of the San Gabriel mountain range in Southern California area have been mined for construction aggregates for over 100 years. Encroachment of high-density urban populations in this area has led to concentrated mining in a handful of open pit mines with single production faces reaching up to 55 m (175 ft) in height, and long transportation distances from the pit to the processing plant. Aggregate producers have responded to these challenges by developing innovative mining systems which enable low-cost, full-face mining of the alluvial material, and low cost delivery of this material to the plant.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

El presente texto revisa los métodos utilizados en las minas de tajo de abierto como son la perforación, disparo y seguridad y así mejorar los standars y el rendimiento futuro en la industria minera. Respecto al primer método empleado, se analizan los factores que afectan el rendimiento de brocas y cómo dicho factores varían, impidiendo la adaptación de prácticas universales de perforación. Asu vez, estos mismos permiten seleccionar el tipo de broca adecuado y mejorar el máximo rendimiento del mismo. En cuanto la voladura y los explosivos, se revisan las variables fundamentales que ejercen una influencia sobre el resultado de un disparo y así realizar un estudio comparativo de los agentes explosivos en uso, tratando de interpretar el mecanismo de la explosión y a la vez aplicarlo a las diferentes formaciones presentes en Cerro. Finalmente, se describe la organización del sistema de seguridad y las obligaciones de este comité en la industria minera.

A state of the art computer simulation package, named UTAH-MODSIM is being developed. This package can run on a mainframe (eg. UNIVAC) as well as on a microcomputer (eg. IBM/PC with at least 512 kBytes of core memory). Friendliness was the major concern in developing this software. The user simply generates a complete flowsheet by presenting the flowsheet on a graphics terminal. This flowsheet defines the circuit to be simulated. With the minimum required data, the user can obtain a complete mass and water balances within a few minutes. Moreover, this package will provide scale-up and capital cost information of specified equipment relevant to design. In order to illustrate the utility of this software, three design examples are given. They are: a) A typical multistage crushing plant. b) A reverse closed grinding circuit comparing one stage with two stage classification. c) A standard closed grinding circuit suitable to liberate a specified fraction of chalcopyrite from a copper ore.

Net Present Value Impact of Discount Rate The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method of valuations is universally used and accepted. The main criticism of the method is that it does not recognize the value of projects long life projects. This can be seen in the preceding graph where the present value of cash flows in later years are small for discount rates over about 10%. This graph covers a project that has a 25 year operating life. It is clear from the low height of the NPV bars at 10% and 15% in the last years of the project that an additional 25 years would add almost no value to total project NPV. As an example of this effect, an colleague undertook the evaluation of a pulp and paper project. The plant could be justified, but it was not possible to justify planting the trees as they took too long to grow and so had not appreciable NPV. The plant had to purchase wood to feed the plant.

In this paper, the effects of some organic compounds on the current efficiency, cell voltage and specific energy consumption during nickel electrowinning, and on the deposit features (morphology, crystallographic orientation and nanohardness) were described. The organics tested here (extractant, diluent, flocculant, lubricating oil and acid mist suppressant) are currently used in industrial plants. The results indicated that only the flocculant and acid mist suppressant exhibit relevant negative impacts on the current efficiency and energy consumption. The current efficiency dropped from 93.6 % (organic-free solutions) to 86.0 % and to 92.8% in electrolytes containing 100 mg.L-1 of acid mist suppressant and flocculant, respectively. At this concentration, their addition to the electrolyte led to increases of the specific energy consumption in the order of 18 % (acid mist supressant) and 2 % (flocculant). Cyclic voltammetry showed that Ni nucleation occurs at more negative potentials at 50 and 100 mg.L-1 of these organics in the electrolyte, thus indicating an inhibition of the deposition process. The deposit quality decreased at the higher concentration of all organics, when more hydrogen pitting was observed. The acid mist suppressant caused delamination of the Ni deposit at 50 and 100 mg.L-1. The addition of 100 mg.L-1 of flocculant and acid mist suppressant to the electrolyte increased the nanohardness of the deposit around 31 and 72%, respectively. The increase in Ni deposit hardness may lead to a decrease in the material ductility, thereby affecting the stripping and cutting of Ni sheets. Our findings may be helpful since strong adverse effect of some organics that may be present in the electrolyte were identified, thus the industry can control and optimize the organic´s dosage in the corresponding operations.

THE year 1935 is noteworthy for the superior legislative measures passed by several states. Sincere efforts have been made to establish equity between the various producing tracts in oil and gas fields. Outstanding legislative measures include the New Mexico law, known as Senate Bill No. 79, approved on Feb. 23; the Oklahoma law on April 22; the Texas law on April 30; and the Kansas law, which became effective July 1. Primarily designed to prevent waste, but more or less the direct out- growth of the current excess of potential oil and gas production, these statutes fall in the class of "Proration Laws."

The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

"For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by control of contaminant ion effects and discusses selected general innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role. One group of changes to control contaminant ions is in size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is in system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy reagents). Plant examples illustrate the successes, indicating that there are several options available. The general innovations start by considering the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics by imaging. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations stress adapting geostatistics to model variation in milling and flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorous application of statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows improvements in concentrate quality from application of basic principles can be impressive.INTRODUCTIONThe more iron control (rejection) that can be accomplished in mineral processing the lower the subsequent metal extraction costs and environmental implications of iron disposal, particularly in hydrometallurgical processes. Iron rejection has been a contributing target to periodic attempts to apply mineral processing to nickel laterites and bauxites but the prime application is control of pyrite and pyrrhotite (iron sulphides) in the treatment of sulphide ores by flotation. In this paper some new concepts and innovations introduced in sulphide flotation plants over the past ten years or so (i.e., since a previous review [1]) will be outlined with examples of how they have contributed to improved “iron control”.To increase rejection of iron minerals, first the recovery mechanism should be understood. There are four principal ones, two physical in origin: 1, via locked particles (i.e., flotation of composite particles due to insufficient size reduction to liberate the minerals) and 2, through entrainment in the water reporting to the float product (an unselective process); and two originating from a response to the system chemistry: 1, true flotation (i.e., iron sulphides becoming hydrophobic) and 2, as a result of iron sulphides forming aggregates with hydrophobic particles (e.g., ”slime” coatings). There has been considerable effort to diagnose which of these dominates iron sulphide recovery; in many cases it is due to “chemistry”, in particular true flotation. The flotation effect often appears related to contamination by metal ions [1]. This can reduce selectivity in two ways: 1, metal ion species may activate iron sulphides, or 2, cause general depression which demands more vigorous flotation conditions (e.g., additional collector) with consequent loss of selectivity. This is where the review will start, by considering ways to control contaminant ions."

THIS paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in commercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordan,4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. ANALYSIS OF STERLING SILVER Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same analysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry II in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. COAL'S importance in the metallurgy of zinc may be gauged by the fact that approximately a million and a half tons is so employed annually in the United States. This brief paper will show in what way the various steps in the treatment of zinc ores utilize this fuel, either in its primary form or as coke or gas, and to what extent. The first step in zinc metallurgy that requires the use of fuel is roasting the sulphide ore, which is the type of ore in which zinc commonly occurs. Since the roasting is nearly or completely autogenous, however, this use of fuel is too minor to warrant further attention. Concentration of zinc ores is usually carried out by conventional milling methods, but a pyrometallurgical method, the Waelz process, is used to concentrate certain low-grade ores, and to recover the zinc content of certain residues in concentrate form. With the advent of the environmental "green" movement of the 1960s, eventually leading to Earth Day 1970, Congress responded by passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), 1970. NEPA gave impetus to a flood of federal acts and laws in the subsequent three decades. Many of those protecting man's environment, health, and well-being also affect mining. For purposes of this chapter, a current mineral law summarization lends itself to a division into two parts: viz., Part I, General Mining Law, and Part II, Enviromining Law. The word enviromining has been coined by the author and is defined and used herein as those federal and state statutes and regulations that were created to provide protection and preservation of man's environment, health, safety, and welfare, and they have particular application to and affect on mining activities. They are listed and treated under Enviromining Laws in Part II. Mining, as a basic industry to provide the essential minerals for mankind's necessities and well-being, truly reflects the mining industry's slogan, "If it can't be grown, it must be mined." Without the basic minerals and rocks won from the earth by mining and mineral processing for their valuable physical properties or chemical constituents, man would soon be forced to revert to the cave-dwelling age. Unfortunately, for man to survive in the "manner of life to which he has become accustomed," he is caught between the demands of cleaning up his deteriorating environment and a continued supply of his basic requirements and amenities for daily living supplied by mining of the earth's minerals. He must have "clean living" at the same time with "good living;" neither is expendable. A very high pricetag accompanies this essential and critical choice which must be paid by society. The United States is internationally recognized as the world leader in environmental matters. Many countries are following suit, principally the other Anglo nations. Because US law is founded and based on English law, on occasion, Anglo-American law is referred to and cited as authority in litigation anywhere in the Anglo-American world of jurisprudence. For this reason, and because mining and the industry is international in nature and operations, some British Commonwealth cases will appear in various topics. If the case is of interest to the reader, further inquiry at a law library may be made through use of the case's style and citation given. "Style" refers to the name of the litigating parties. "Citation" refers to the law publication in which the case and decision may be found, as well as the jurisdiction and court of decision. "THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. (4) McKinsey sees three important areas of focus to address the root causes of productivity decline. 1) Embed effective management operating systems at mines 2) Prioritized operational excellence and capabilities development 3) Focus on innovation Reality has now settled back in and companies are struggling to make ends meet. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

SINCE the Sixth Book has described the iron tools, the vessels and the machines used in mink, this Book will describe the methods of assaying1 ores; because it is desirable to first test them in order that the material mined may be advantageously smelted, or that the dross may be purged away and the metal made pure. Although writers have mentioned such tests, yet none of them have set down the directions for performing them, wherefore it is no wonder that those who come later have written nothing on the subject. By tests of this kind miners can determine with certainty whether ores contain any metal in them or not ; or if it has already been indicated that the ore contains one or more metals, the tests show whether it is much or little ; the miners also ascertain by such tests the method by which the metal can be separated from that part of the ore devoid of it ; and further, by these tests, they determine that part in which there is much metal from that part in which there is little. Unless these tests have been carefully applied before the metals are melted out, the ore cannot be smelted without great loss to the owners, for the parts which do not easily melt in the fire carry the metals off with them or consume them. In the last case, they pass off with the fumes ; in the other case they are mixed with the slag and furnace accretions, and in such event the owners lose the labour which they have spent in preparing the furnaces and the crucibles, and further, it is necessary for them to incur fresh expenditure for fluxes and other things. Metals, when they have been melted out, are usually assayed in order that we may ascertain what pro- portion of silver is in a centumpondium of copper or lead, or what quantity of gold is in one libra of silver ; and, on the other hand, what proportion of copper or lead is contained in a centumpondium of silver, or what quantity of silver is contained in one libra of gold. And from this we can calculate whether it will be worth while to separate the precious metals from the base metals, or not. Further, a test of this kind shows whether coins are good or are debased ; and readily detects silver, if the coiners have mixed more than is lawful with the gold ; or copper, if the coiners have alloyed with the gold or silver more of it than is allowable. In this paper it is argued that we are entering a new mining era, based on considerably more challenging orebodies as we rapidly expand minerals production by exploiting previously uneconomic deposits. Rapidly increasing production costs cannot be sustained by continually increasing commodity prices, as illustrated by the recent downturn in the industry.Driven by reduction in grade, requiring the processing of 50 to 100 per cent more ore to recover the same amount of metal, often accompanied by finer grain structure - necessitating a finer product size and more challenging recovery - the productivity of the mining industry is dropping in real terms. The author suggests that tweaking current technologies and relying on economies of scale will not turn the industry around, but rather a switch to considerably more efficient processing is required.It is imperative to utilise the properties of the orebody, especially in terms of variability, in revolutionising our processing techniques. Our new mantra may be æselective mass mining with flexible processingÆ. This paper explores how this may be implemented using current technology and equipment in order to change the cost profile of the new mining industry. Orebody knowledge, based on the underlying process drivers, rather than proxies, is required. These properties and their variability will need to be propagated into the orebody through utilising the geological data rather than smoothing block averages, which destroys information on variability.Novel flexible circuit designs are presented that can respond to a wide variability in ore properties and throughput requirements in order to slash processing costs and energy utilisation, while enhancing overall recovery. The success of these circuits will be based on an ability to predict at both design stage and in everyday processing the variable ore properties, which is dependent upon reliable orebody knowledge that caries variability and underlying processing properties.CITATION:Powell, M S, 2013. Established and emerging mining companies face significant challenges in managing their operations and projects. Outcomes often do not meet the expectations of all the stakeholders of particular developments. This paper reviews typical management practises used by mining companies to undertake mining projects and improve their operations. A simple application of the House of Quality (HOQ) tool used in the Quality Functional Deployment (QFD) management approach is presented. It is shown that a QFDMMPtg approach could lead to innovation in mining processing plant development practice.

This report summarizes the principles of safely working steep coal seam using longwall mining methods. It presents the state-of-the-art and identifies the problems which result from seam inclination. Details are given on foreign longwall faces achieving good records of safety and productivity when mining on 30 degree and 50 degree inclined seams. Recommendations for further research are suggested.

FABRICATION of semiconductor devices.requires the formation of electrical contacts, often involving the use of lead, tin, and lead-tin solders. In several recent instances when germanium had been bonded to nickel with lead, a new metallic phase appeared, unattached to either germanium or nickel, but rather suspended as a continuous foil wholly contained within the lead matrix. Since such metallic structures do not form in nickel-lead or lead-germanium systems under identical conditions, a brief study was made of the characteristics and possible formation mechanisms of this material. Based on the results of in-situ observations and physical model analysis, a computer simulation method, FEAEBP, has been developed to predict the behaviors of main roof breakage in longwall mining by considering it as a Kirchhoff plate on Winkler elastic foundation. This method in used to investigate the initiation, and development of the breaking process of main roof and its displacement field before and after its breakage. In this paper the simulation method is introduced, characteristics of the displacement field of the main roof is discussed and monitoring variation of the displacement field of the main roof in a Chinese longwall face is demonstrated.
