"Gold-silver mineralization at Red Mountain (1992 resource of 2.5 million tonnes grading 12.8 g/t Au and 38.1 g/t Ag) occurs within several discrete zones within a folded sequence of Middle to Late Triassic Triassic sedimentary rocks, Early Jurassic volcaniclastic and pyroclastic rocks, and Early Jurassic intrusions. Three phases of Early Jurassic sills and stocks collectively comprise the Golds/ide intrusions: (1) irregular bodies of medium-grained hornblende monzodiorite (Hillside porphyry); (2) hornblende-biotite + quartz porphyritic monzodiorite to quartz monzodiorite (Golds/ide porphyry; U-Pb zircon ages of 197.1 + 1.9 Ma); and (3) biotite porphyritic hornblende monzodiorite sills (Biotite porphyry). Contact breccias and igneous breccia dikes are common features of the Golds/ide intrusions. Chemical similarities and equivalent ages of volcanic rocks and intrusions, and the presence of intrusive clasts in volcanic rocks suggest that the intrusions are feeders to overlying volcanic units.Hydrothermal alteration affects all pre-Tertiary rocks on Red Mountain, including all phases of the Golds/ide intrusions. Several shallow-dipping alteration zones are developed sequentially above a propylitic quartz stockwork/molybdenum zone. These include: (1) sericite-quartz-pyrite alteration (pyrite-dominant alteration); (2) chlorite-K-feldspar-sericite-titanite alteration with disseminated and vein pyrrhotite (pyrrhotite-dominant alteration); and (3) brown to black tourmaline veins and K-feldspar-pyrite-titanite-actinolite alteration. Anomalous gold(> 0.3 g/t) mineralization is developed at the transition from the pyrite to the pyrrhotite dominant alteration over a > 1 km2 area. Within this anomalous zone, high-grade (3 g/t to 20 g/t Au) gold-silver mineralization occurs in 5 m to 29 m thick, semi-tabular pyrite + pyrrhotite stockworks with intense sericitic alteration and surrounding disseminated sphalerite + pyrrhotite.Stratigraphic, spatial and geochronologic relations and alteration zoning indicate that mineralization formed in a subvolcanic environment at the top of the Golds/ide intrusions and at the base of the Early Jurassic volcanic pile. The Golds/ide porphyry is interpreted to be the mineralizing intrusion. The alteration zoning, molybdenum-copper mineralized quartz stockworks, extensive Ksilicate and tourmaline alteration, and the relationship with a hypabyssal porphyritic intrusion show similarities to many porphyry systems."

As the 2010 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2010 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 328. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, we accomplish the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly fulfills that pledge. The 2010 Transactions is the first Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely as an e-book. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will certainly better serve the mining community. I am excited about this development and the opportunities it presents. The 2010 Transactions also contain some of the most exciting research from the past year, including new developments in mineral processing, safety and exploration. Be sure not to miss the two Minerals & Metallurgical Processing issues on the subject of gold hydrometallurgy. This 2010 Transactions comprise of a total of 78 technical papers (582 pages including index), including all 21 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2010 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 62) and all 34 papers (231 pages) that were published in 2010 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 27). Addition, this volume contains 23 papers (194 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 78 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2010 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

"A study has been done of the scale-up of laboratory bench-scale flotation to continuous plant circuit performance. It was found that the impellor speed and the air flow rate influenced the results and in this case extreme values of these operating variables were required in order to reproduce the plant rougher results in the laboratory. Despite the experimental uncertainty introduced by these extreme values, it was demonstrated that the plant performance could be predicted and experimentally reproduced with bench-scale tests.IntroductionThe mineral processing industry relies heavily on batch flotation testwork to design flowsheets, evaluate reagent s and compare various types of ore. The batch tests are generally regarded as being directly comparable within themselves, but quite often they relate poorly or not at all to continuous circuits. Obviously this dilemma generates considerable uncertainty with wide-ranging ramifications. One of the manifestations of this unfortunate situation is the commonly expressed opinion that ""it may work that way in the laboratory, but it will never work that way in the plant"".In a previous publication, a method was described whereby the results of batch bench-scale tests could be used to simulate a locked cycle flotation test series. The work to be described here is a continuation of that investigation with an extension to the simulation of an actual plant circuit. It would have been preferable to progress from laboratory batch data to a continuous pilot plant and then finally to a full-scale plant operation. However, because that possibility did not present itself, an attempt will be made to show that the performance of an existing plant circuit can be successfully simulated from batch data. The success of the procedure can be judged by the agreement among the plant results, a locked cycle test and the predicted results based on batch tests."

THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

In this paper, results of a novel synthesis method of carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 cathode material for lithium-ion battery are reported. The carbon coating was produced from a precursor, glucose, by microwave-pyrolysis method. The structure, morphology and electrochemical performance of the bare and carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and charge-discharge tests respectively. The L8(27) orthogonal experiments were carried out to optimize LiNi113Co113Mn1130z/C technological conditions. The conditions of the orthogonal experiments were that the glucose content were 1.5 % and 4 %, the holding time were 15min and 30min, the heating temperature were 400 °C and 500 °C and the solvent were H20 and CH3CH20H. The main experiment target include specific capacity at 0.1C and 0.2C, Capacity retention rate, medium voltage attenuation rate and The fifth discharge medium voltage. The data were analyzed by Minitab 14 statistics software. The results of analysis of variance indicated that the most influential factor was the glucose content despite of discharge rate. Secondly, the effect of the solvent was equivalent to the holding time.

Two papers dealing with Noranda's milling operations have already been presented. The first1 of these covered the initial metallurgical problems connected with the treatment of the ore, while the second2 described the development of the mill from a 500-ton unit in 1928 to one with a daily capacity of 3000 tons less than six years later. At the time the second paper was written the equipment whirh had been installed to bring the mill capacity up to 3000 tons was being tuned into production and for this reason, though each step had previously been tested by a large-scale pilot operation, it was thought advisable to withhold metallurgical data until any starting-up difficulties had been overcome and anticipated requirements fulfilled. These requirements called for an improvement in gold recovery without any lowering of the previous ratio of concentration, and the pages that follow deal with the methods by which this result was obtained. An idea of the character of Noranda concentrating ore will be gained from an inspection of the following mineralogical analysis of the ore treated by the mill during 1933: MineRal Content Mineral ConteNt Chalcopyrite, per cent..... 6.8 Silica and silicates, per cent............ 18.3 Pyrite, per cent........... 22.1 Gold, native and as telluride, oz. per ton 0.15 Pyrrhotite, per cent....... 51.5 Silver, probably as argentite, oz. per tou 0.35 Magnetite, per cent....... 0.5 Thesr figures, which are typical, show that over 73 per cent of the ore treated consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite. Determirnation of the proportion of unrecovered gold associated with each of these minerals was therefore of primary importance in developing a suitable method for improving gold recovery. The river- or dredge-coal industry of Pennsylvania is conducted on many of the rivers and creeks that drain the Pennsylvania anthracite fields. Coal thus recovered found its way into the streams as coal was being prepared for market by the anthracite industry proper, in the northeastern part of the State. The Principal rivers draining; the fields, those where dredging is taking place, are the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Lehigh. Several creeks - the Shamokin, Mahanoy, Wiconisco, and Swatara - also are productive sources of river or creek coal. Operations along the streams cover a wide territory, and along the Susquchanna alone; dredges are recovering coal for about 160 miles. Anthracite was a significant factor in the early industrial development of the United States. Industry used it to generate steam, and railroads used it as fuel for locomotives; but it probably was most important industrially in the smelting of iron ore. For more than a hundred years homes have been heated with this fuel. From the beginning of mining in 1807, to 1940, more than 4 billion net tons of anthracite had been prepared and shipped to market. In the preparation process much of the smaller-size coal and refuse found their way into rivers and creeks which carried the material many miles. This study is concerned with the recovery of that anthracite from those rivers and creeks.

A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing carion-exchange reactions. The test a1 so indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields. The research was partially funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. SUMMARY: Geotechnical problems often lead to an increase of construction time and costs for large highway and railway projects. Some reasons, which have led to failures and thus to a delay of construction works as well as to increasing costs, are demonstrated by means of case histories, in which the author was involved as expert or planner. Proposals are made how to identify the reasons and to avoid repetitions. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei Großprojekten der Verkehrsinfrastruktur stehen häufig geotechnische Aufgabenstellungen im Vordergrund. Wegen geotechnischer Probleme kam und kommt es häufig zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen. Anhand einiger Beispiele, bei denen der Autor als Gutachter und Planer beteiligt war, wird gezeigt, welche Ursachen zu Schadensfällen und damit auch zu Termin- und Kostenüberschreitungen geführt haben. Es werden Hinweise und Anregungen gegeben, wie die Ursachen erkannt und Wiederholungen von Schadensfällen vermieden werden können. RÉSUMÉ: À grands projets de l'infrastructure de la circulation, souvent des tâches géotechniques sont au premier plan. Par suite de problèmes géotechniques, souvent des dates et frais ont été dépassés. "INTRODUCTION At 9:12 a. m. on April 16, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 4 of the S. S. Grandcamp, a 7,176 gross-ton Liberty ship owned by the French Government, detonated at pier 0 of the Texas City Terminal Railway Co., Texas City, Galveston County, Tex.This detonation was the first of a series of explosions and fires that took the lives of approximately 600 persons, injured 3,000 other persons, and caused a property damage and business loss that will exceed $58,800,000. It has been estimated that the life, accident, and workmen's compensation insurance loss will be $8,200,000.At 1:10 a. m. on April 17, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 5 of the S.S. High Flyer, a 6,214-gross-ton Liberty ship owned and operated by the Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., Inc., detonated at pier L. This explosion materially increased the property damage caused by the first explosion, in between 50 and 100 persons, and is believed to have taken the life of only one person.The exact number of casualties resulting from the Texas City disaster may never be known. On June 22, 1947, 65 days after the explosions, the red Cross and the Texas Department of Public safety repoted:,""Identified dead, 405; unidentified dead, 63; believed missing, 100; injured, 3,000; hospital¬ized, 600; still in hospitals, 37."""

For the third successive year it appears that demand for platinum will exceed supplies of newly-mined metal, forecasts Johnson Matthey in its "Platinum 1987 Interim Review." Based on data available at the end of August 1987, Johnson Matthey estimates that western world demand for platinum could exceed 93t (3 million oz) for the first time ever in 1987. Given a likely increase in demand of 4.3t to around 94t (140,000 oz to around 3.02 million oz), up by about 5% over 1986, there would be a 1.8- to 2.2-t (60,000- to 70,000-oz) shortfall in 1987 supply. South African mines enjoying undisrupted production last year after strikes affected Impala's output in 1986. The rate of increases in western world supplies, though, has probably not kept pace with the growth in demand. A downturn in US demand for platinum was counterbalanced by substantially increased purchases from Japanese and Western European consumers of the metal. Total imports of platinum into Japan in 1987 may have reached a record level of 45t (1.45 million oz). The largest source of demand for platinum remains its use in autocatalysts US and Japanese auto manufacturers reduced their platinum purchases in the wake of falling car production. Therefore, a small decline in overall 1987 sales of perhaps 780 kt (25,000 oz) was expected in 1987. Western European demand, however, rose strongly as a result of increased output. The spread of exhaust emission control regulations has sharply boosted the number of cars equipped with three-way catalysts containing platinum and rhodium. Western European auto makers probably needed 5.6t (180,000 oz) of platinum last year, a 50% increase over 1986. The jewelry industry, the second largest user of platinum, increased its offtake of platinum in 1987. Japan, the key to the jewelry industry's consumption of platinum, could absorb 24.8 to 26.4 (800,000 to 850,000 oz) in 1987, compared with 23t (740,000 oz) in 1986. Platinum has wide and diverse applications in industry. Other major users are the chemical, glass, electronics and petroleum industries. They were expected to increase their aggregate demand by about 1.8t (60,000 oz), or 11% in 1987. Investment demand for small platinum bars and coins of up to 311g (10 oz) dropped back in relatively inhospitable conditions. This, after rapid increases in recent years and a surge in US demand in 1986. However, Japanese investors purchasing bars weighing 500g or 1 kg (16 to 32 oz), and considered more speculative, recovered last year. Over the first eight months of 1987, platinum performed strongly on the open market with average prices well up from 1986 in dollar terms. But the increase was less marked where measured in sterling or yen. Platinum ad¬vanced by $3.70/g ($115 per oz) between Jan. 1 and mid-September with the average price having been surpassed only in the heady days of 1980. Johnson Matthey believes that supply and demand appear likely to keep more or less in step on a gently rising path. The recent open market volatility will continue with prices fluctuating widely over short periods. Writing in mid-September, and basing its view on the tangible evidence of platinum's price fall since the review was written, the company's assessment of price prospects is unchanged. Demand for platinum remains strong all-round. In October, imports of platinum into Japan were exceptionally high. And in the US and Japan there was a marked resurgence of demand from private investors. Although market sentiment may have been influenced in part by the news of several potential new platinum mines in South Africa, the full effects of these prospects on supply, even if they were all to materialize, would not be felt before the early-mid 1990s, Johnson Matthey said. According to the review, no radical change in platinum supplies is discernible in the near-term. Incremental growth from South Africa can be expected as the major producers continue to make the most of their existing resources. The Soviet Union may be keener to sell than it appeared earlier in 1987, especially if prices hold up, but a substantial increase is improbable. Canadian supplies are not capable of much variation from present levels. The palladium-rich Stillwater mine will make a modest contribution. Referring to the investment market, Johnson Matthey concluded that despite this year's reduction in sales of small-denomination investment products, platinum does appear to have established itself with private investors. Bearing in mind how business multiplied in comparatively unfavorable conditions before 1986, it is reasonable to look for a resumption of growth once the climate improves.

The Royal Canadian Mint has implemented significant process additions since 2005. Installation of a whole new highly automated silver refining circuit has allowed recovery of physical silver from gold and silver dorés . To complement this change, a small Top Blown Rotary Converter has been in operation. On the gold refining side, a new hydrometallurgical process to recover precious metals from Miller Chlorination slag has been developed. Finally, new systems have been put in place to improve treatment of waste water, wet and dry fume and dust.

This report presents the results of a study for the Bureau of Mines to compare loan terms for non-fuel mineral projects in developing countries, from various International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and from private sector commercial sources. The study compares IFI and commercial loan terms for seven mineral projects in developing countries. The International Financial Institutions represented are: ? International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) ? International Finance Corporation (IFC) ? Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ? Asian Development Bank (ADB) ? International Monetary Fund (IMF) In addition, the costs of financing for these mineral projects were compared with the costs of long-term debt to the five largest U.S. mineral producers.

This report summarizes the program to develop and construct an improved light-scattering dust monitor (ILSDM). This improved light-scattering dust monitor, which operates on the forward light scattering principle, provides instantaneous measurements of airborne dust concentrations in units of mg/m. The program was divided into two phases. Phase I involved the design of the ILSDM which was reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. Phase II included the fabrication of a prototype ILSDM based upon the design developed during Phase I. After completion, the ILSDM was delivered and demonstrated at the Bureau of Mines. A description of the final ILSDM design, operating instructions, maintenance instructions and recommendations for additional work are also included in this report.

During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.
