A quantitative rockburst hazard assessment procedure was introduced on Elandsrand Gold Mine at the end of 1994. It is currently used to evaluate the seismicity-related risk in production areas on the mine. Six parameters related to seismicity, geology, mining layout, and production are rated and results are used as a planning tool on a regular basis. The applied assessment can be considered successful in that it promotes awareness of the seismic hazard and provides an opportunity to address seismicity-related mining problems. A comparison between high risk panels and those working areas with rockburst incidents showed that high hazard ratings reliably forecast the occurrence of larger events in the following month but they do not necessarily predict those working places with rockburst-related accidents. From this one may conclude that high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine is located at the head of the Waite kauri Ri ver, 8 km northwest of Waihi near the southern end of the Coromandel Range. The mine produces gold and silver from epithermal veins hosted by Miocene andesitic flows and pyroclastics of the Coromandel Group. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company Ltd (20 per cent). Mining is by open pit and underground methods. Mineralisation in a near-surface sheeted/stockworked vein zone is mined from the open pit. The deeper Empire Vein System is mined from underground where higher grade mineralisation is restricted to generally discrete veins. The open pit stockwork zone is west of and offset from the updip trend of the Empire Vein System. The Empire (hangingwall) Vein strikes generally north-northeast and dips steeply west. Dips become subvertical at greater depth. The hangingwall vein is a well developed, generally continuous structure with relatively high gold grades. A complex footwall vein system forms shallow west-dipping offshoots to the hangingwall vein. Structure and gold grades become increasingly erratic away from the hangingwall vein. The better developed footwall veins carry economic grades and high 'spot' grades over 50 g/t Au are not uncommon. Highest gold grades are associated with tightly crustiform banded sections of quartz veins and with dark fine grained siliceous breccias. The main hangingwall vein occupies a major north-northeast trending fault structure, the Empire Fault. Footwall veining forms within subordinate splinter fault zones. There has been extensive multidirectional pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation faulting. Fault manifestation is highly dependent on host rock characteristics. The central part of the hangingwall vein and surrounding silicified country rock has been shattered by a major fault structure, the West Mine Fault, forming a poorly consolidated, blocky quartz-breccia ore zone. Away from the more brittle ore zones and associated silicified envelope, wide clay-filled shears mark the major fault trends. Development of the deposit is considered to have occurred in two distinct stages related to separate episodes of dilational jog movement on the Empire Fault. The first phase reactivated the pre-existing Empire Fault as a dilational fissure with subordinate splinters on the footwall side. The Empire Vein System (hangingwall and associated footwall veining) formed during this phase. A second phase of renewed movement with further dilation resulted in more extensive fracturing of the Empire Vein and surrounding country rock and formed the sheeted/stockwork veining of the open pit. An upwards/westward migration of the hydrothermal system is assumed but fluid pathways between underground and open pit veining are unclear. Ore extraction and mining geology methods have responded to improved understanding of the grade and structural variability, and changing ground conditions inherent in the vein system. The underground mine produces ore from flatback cut and fill, post-pillar and bench stopes. Open pit and underground ores are campaign milled through a conventional CIP plant.

Ballast Nedam is in Surinam constructing two bridges that will improve communications in the coastal region. The bridges will cross the Coppenam and Surinam rivers and will be founded on open-ended steel piles over 60 meters in length. The majority of piles are inclined and support prefabricated concrete girders forming the roadway. In most locations the stratum is consolidated cohesive layers extending to a depth in excess of 60 meters. For this reason, before pile driving operations commenced, it was decided that a number of test loads would be carried out determine the capacity of the piles. Loading tests were carried out on specially installed piles as well as on piles that would be used as working piles to support the structure. Working piles were dynamically tested using Pile Driving Analysis (PDA) equipment. This decision was based on the inclination of the piles, the cohesive nature of the soil and the increase of strength after the piles are driven. A good insight has been obtained into the real strength of the soil by comparing dynamic and static loading tests on vertical test piles. This made it possible to determine the required length of pile.

Ultrafine-grained surface layers were obtained by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) in copper and titanium samples. The thermal properties of the deformed layers were characterized using a scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) that allows thermal conductivity to be mapped down to the submicrometer scale. A theoretical approach, based on this investigation, was used to calculate the heat flow from the probe tip to the sample and then estimate the thermal conductivities at different scanning positions. Experimental results and theoretical calculation demonstrate that SThM can be used as a powerful tool for the thermal property and microstructural analysis of ultrafine-grained microstructures.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. It is unlikely, as In the past, improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel costs/shortages and ever increasing haul distances. There-fore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this U.S.B.M. contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data was gathered from extensive literature searches. European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configuration.

2We use field measurements to quantify physical processes that accompany different types of mining explosions. The data sets collected include three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture material and those that cast material. Our goal is a physical understanding of these sources for the purposes of optimizing blasting practices.

The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

In recent years, the mineral applications dealing with more complex data in distributed environment have grown rapidly. Many mineral and mining organizations have to organize internally and globally distributed manufacturing and experiment sites, which share the roles of databases and other multi-services like software programs. Thus, there are commercial and technical pressures pushing the mineral software vendors to move their current service toward Web service. XML has gained wide acceptance for representing, storing and transferring structured data and documents of many kinds, especially in scientific communities. However, so far there is no such a Markup Language in mineral industry. A XML-based uniform encoding, which is called MineML(Mineral Markup Language), is proposed and developed in this project. The framework of the MineML specification is created. MineML will play the role as shared protocols within mineral domain for archiving, transferring the multi-nature data between the software packages on the desktop over the Internet and sharing the services between users at different sites. Inspired by MLA’s (Mineral Liberation Analyser, JKMRC, University of Queensland, Australia) Mineralogical Data Presentation Program, a proof-of-concept prototype of Web Service is developed here to validate and demonstrate the MineML specification. Certain strategies, specific technologies and tools are adopted to create such an environment. To accomplish that, a set of experimental MineML documents including correlated XML, XSD (schemas) and XSL(stylesheets) documents have been elaborated for archiving, presenting and transferring the mineralogical data information, with the persistence on flexibility and extensibility for generic mineral and mining data handling.

The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

This publication contains highlights of a 4-hour lecture and demonstration by the Bureau of Mines on the fire and explosion hazards of flammable liquids and solids, oxidizing materials, corrosive liquids, and compressed gases. The authors first presented this material as part of a 2-week course given to officers and enlisted men at the U.S. Coast Guard's Dangerous-Cargo Handling School, established at Fort Eustis, Va., in 1959. The Bureau was asked to present the lecture and demonstration because of the extensive experience of its researchers in handling certain harardous commodities.

Heat and humidity buildup withn refuge alternatives (RAs) may expose occupants to physiological hazards such as heat stress. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require RAs in underground coal mines to provide a lifesustaining environment for miners trapped underground when escape is impossible. RAs are required to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 95 °F (35 °C). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 6-person metal-type RA in its underground coal mine facilities to investigate the thermal environment over a 96-h period. The test results showed that mine air and mine strata temperatures surrounding an RA occupied by simulated miners (SMs) increased over the 96-h test period. The test results suggest that RA manufacturers should consider this increase in temperatures when calculating and evaluating RA components during surface and laboratory tests. The findings can equip stakeholders with additional considerations for calculating the interior heat and humidity temperature profiles for occupied RAs not tested in situ.

This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

Load behaviour in an industrial mill has been measured directly by inserting probes through liner bolts. The data from conductivity probes have indicated the presence of premature centrifuging during manipulation of the load mass. Overloading conditions were also encountered. Overloading and premature centrifuging both reduce the power drawn by the mill. These effects have been successfully modelled.

It has been proven theoretically and experimentally that the use of 10 - 30 per cent DRI in blast furnace along with iron ore or sinter results in lower coke rate and higher productivity. However, to-date this remains unpractised on a regular basis mainly because of economic reasons. The DRI produced by several methods are expensive and difficult to store/handle in large quantities because of its reactive nature and thus DRI in blast furnace remains unacceptable.

This paper presents the modern techniques of limestone sawing and quarrying developed and adopted by Indiana Limestone Company, Inc.(ILCI).To fulfill the growing market demands, ILCI’s quarries are committed to deliver planned quantities of all type of stone blocks in a variety of different colors, sizes, and textures. This involves scheduling which quarry ledges should be mined and when in order to minimize unnecessary inventory buildup. Challenges associated with ILCI’s operation are discussed and summarized in the closing of this paper.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.
