Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

Construction law in general and the law of deep foundations in particular continues to develop rapidly, particularly in the areas of risk allocation. Public and private owners are increasingly using contractual disclaimers to shift the risk of differing site conditions to contractors, and courts are increasingly willing to enforce these contractual devices. Perhaps also in an effort to control costs, public and private owners are turning to design-build contracting techniques. While design-build offers many advantages over traditional project delivery systems, it does not answer all of the risk-allocation questions that frequently arise. Even in design-build, problems with unanticipated subsurface conditions and defective design are not easily addressed. Finally, developments in electronic commerce present the potential to transform the construction industry.

Request to Mine Beneath Bridge The Jabs Run Bridge is a reinforced portland concrete arch filled bridge located on WV Bouts 7 near Pentress, WV. The bridge has a span of 22.9 m (meters) and a height of 4 m above normal pool elevation to the underside of the center of the arch (See Pig 1). The bridge is a two lane structure with a width of 6.86 m. The structure is over 50 years old Wing been built in 1929 and is owned by the Department (WV Department of Highways).

This Bureau of Mines study identifies and examines the costs of Federal, State, and local environmental protection controls on domestic phosphate rock mining, The costs include the expenditures needed to comply with government regulations and the effects that these expenditures and regulations have on supply. The study analyzes costs of environmental impact assessments, air and water quality standards, reclamation laws, potential solid waste controls, and local government restrictions. In addition, an industry survey and the Bureau's Minerals Availability System (MAS) are used to evaluate land management policies that restrict access to phosphate resources, Conclusions drawn from these analyses confirm that (1) domestic phosphate mining has incurred substantial control costs and may be subject to significant new regulatory costs in the next several years, (2) certain environmental controls can discourage mining investment, (3) environmental policies governing land-use controls affect the disposition of sizable phosphate resources, and are key determinants in the development of those resources on the Federal do- main, and (4) environmental costs could diminish the competitiveness of domestic producers.

"The design of SAG milling circuits for mining projects requires the incorporation of the energy consumption considerations and the evaluation between different flexibility-adding options to absorb the time-dependent variation in the ore lithology. In order to expand the focus of the engineering design, a higher level of deepness and quality in the baseline information must be achieved to elucidate all of the constraints on throughput, energy consumption and product quality generating a design optimization consistent with an integrated vision of the process. This paper presents a review of a collection of typical examples of the copper and gold mining project in the Chilean Andes, in which both process and energy efficiency criteria are considered when the focus is to deliver an integral solution that incorporate those areas in the design. The intensive use of energy in the SAG milling, the process continuity and the quality of the product are a function of the proper design and selection of grinding equipment and plant layout, aligned with the mining plan and associated with projected future expansions and production increases.INTRODUCTION Autogenous and Semiautogenous grinding technology, large diameter and short length mills, begins with the Handsel design. During the decade of 1930’s, Handsel-Hardinge studies led to cascade mill development. Nowadays, 80 years later, continuous improvements in design and technology have been conducted to a completely new generation of gearless SAG mills that have led to an increasing capacity at the concentrator plants. Considering the existing alternatives, SAG mills are the most implemented option for the grinding circuit today. This work presents a review of the SAG mill implementation parameters and circuit considerations and its correlations in the most recent projects in Chile with an ore treatment capacity above 50 ktpd since the decade of the 90’s up to now. From this period, the tendencies will be analyzed using project design data. Based on process design information, the recent SAG mill history in relevant projects related to the new generation of commercial SAG mills, technical associated considerations and performance will be discussed. Circuit selection based on energy utilization will be revised to bring up a more holistic perspective on the SAG mill circuit design concepts. As is now well known, the heart of every concentrator plant are the grinding mills. Higher demands on throughput, availability and power consumption optimizations require not only high performance electrical equipment but also a well selected grinding circuit. The energy efficiency issues associated to the circuits design will be reviewed."

Southern Africa has a history rich in the pyrometallurgical processing of ores. Two of the alloys produced are high-carbon ferromanganese (74?83 per cent Mn) and silicomanganese (59?67 per cent Mn and 14?31 per cent Si). The largest land-based manganese ore deposit in the world is based in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. In 2010, 6.3 Mt of ore from the deposit was exported, mainly to China, Norway, Japan, and India, and an estimated 1.1 Mt beneficiated locally to produce manganese ferroalloys. In southern Africa the producers of manganese ferroalloys are Metalloys and Assmang, and of silicomanganese Transalloys, Mogale Alloys, and Match Corporation. Submerged arc furnace technology is utilized in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn) and silicomanganese, applying the discard slag practice in both instances. The carbon content of HCFeMn is reduced using converter technology and that of SiMn using the Perrin process. Ninety per cent of the world?s manganese ferroalloys production is consumed by the steel industry. The consumption (and production) of manganese ferroalloys therefore closely follows worldwide steel production. From 2001 to 2010, the doubling of the worldwide production of manganese ferroalloys can be attributed to an increase in production capacity in Asia and Oceania, with the largest increase in the production of SiMn. Manganese ferroalloys produced in Asia and Oceania are mainly for the local market, with North America, Europe, Russia, and Turkey the major markets for alloys from southern Africa. The major challenges faced by the southern African manganese ferroalloy producers are increasing electricity tariffs and productivity of labour, which require a concerted effort by all parties involved to achieve a satisfactory solution. Although theoretical and conceptual knowledge regarding the impact of horizontal stress on underground coal mining excavations have existed since at least the mid-1900s, it wasn?t until the late 1970?s that the theory and practical understanding began to mesh. Since that time, particularly over the last 25 years of this Conference, increased empirical study, as well as advances in measurement technology, computer simulation, and bolt design, has significantly improved our understanding of horizontal stress impact, and provided coal mine operators with tools to reliably predict and manage it. This paper provides a retrospective review of some of the more important horizontal stress-related advancements made during the 25 years of Conference proceedings, particularly those for predicting and controlling horizontal stress impacts within underground coal mines. Relevant and significant CONSOL experiences and studies will be presented in context, with particular attention to horizontal stress considerations for longwall faces and gateroads. The significance of horizontal stress will also be placed in context with respect to local geology and structure, ground support measures, and mining configuration, method, and sequence.

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

"Stringent environmental performance criteria and regulations, and the desire to minimize water use have made membrane-based treatment and separation processes an attractive option. This has lead to many advances in all aspects of the technology. Membrane separation processes have found application in sea water desalination, brackish water treatment, decontamination of ground water, and wastewater treatment. Development of membranes with better resistance to harsh feed conditions has created new opportunities for the broader application of membrane separation technologies to mineral processing streams. There are examples in mineral processing operations, including treatment of acidic drainage, pre-concentration of pregnant leaching solution in heap leaching operations, separation of acids and metals from waste streams and intermediate process streams, as well as gold and cyanide recovery from a heap leaching operation. This paper provides a brief overview of membrane technology principles, followed by a discussion of current membrane technology applications relevant to the mining and mineral processing industry. The paper further explores the potential for the application of membrane separation as an integrated component in mineral processing operations.INTRODUCTION Increased regulatory pressures, emphasis on water conservation, and scarcity of water in arid regions have resulted in substantial changes in industrial practices in recent years. As a result, many industries have become more open to adopting innovative technologies such as membrane separation. The mining industry, which is typically very conservative, has adopted membrane separation as an effective end-of-pipe solution for effluent and acidic drainage (AD) treatment; however, its use as an integrated component in plant operations has progressed more slowly. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations coupled with the desire for low- and zero-discharge operations, the use of membrane separation technology for achieving acceptable environmental performance may be unavoidable in the future. The relatively small footprint requirement, versatility, and modular construction of membrane separation units facilitate their introduction into existing processes with a suitable feed stream. Membrane separation is not a stand-alone process that provides the ultimate solution to water and wastewater treatment; however, it can often be economically added to conventional waste treatment plants to increase throughput and/or decrease contaminant output (Mortazavi, 2008). Although membrane separation technology has become an established separation technique that is widely used in drinking water production and other industries, it is still considered an emerging technology within the mining and mineral processing industry. This technology offers many potential benefits such as clean water recovery from wastewater, significant reduction of volume requiring conventional treatment, decreased usage of reagents, and acid recovery, all of which lead to increased treatment efficiencies and lower reagent consumption. This could translate to smaller and more efficient plants with lower capital and operating costs and lower environmental impacts. Plant expansion may be facilitated by incorporating a membrane separation unit operation in order to utilize existing treatment systems at higher throughputs."

This is due, firstly, to the history and culture of different States and, secondly, to the assets of natural resources. This paper reports on studies that have been done on the electrical conduction in silicon, ferro silicon, and charge chrome furnaces. A system has been developed that can distinguish between normal resistive conduction and arcing, and this was used to quantify in particular the relative amount of arcing that takes place in these furnaces. It was found that silicon and ferro silicon behave similarly and exhibit a relatively large amount of arcing. Charge chrome on the other hand exhibits considerably less arcing, and the extent of this arcing is highly correlated with the tapping of the furnace. The arcing measurements can also be used online in the control of the furnace, both for the electrodes and electrical circuit, and for the raw materials.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. The munerical simulations correspond with field observations in that vmy short delays (< 5Oms) and vety long delays(> 3oOms) produce a lower percent-cast thao a medium delay (100 to ZOO ms). The DMC predicted relatio&lp between row delay timing and percent-cast is more complex than expected with a dip in the auve where the optimum timing might be expected. More study is required to gain a full undasranding of this phenomenoo.

"Concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics were applied to study two cases of failure, namely an equalizing beam from a tandem rear axle of a highway tractor unit and the main beam of a flat bed trailer. In the first case, the presence of a crack, initiated by stress corrosion cracking followed by significant fatigue crack propagation produced a state of stress which was sufficient to produce brittle failure. Calculation of the fatigue life agreed with the number of cycles that the structure experienced before final fracture. In the second case, it was demonstrated that a combination of low temperature and high loading rate was sufficient to cause brittle fracture.IntroductionFailure analysis of engineering components has generally been carried out without the benefit of fracture mechanics. It is generally understood that real structures inevitably contain internal or surface flaws which under an applied load, may propagate to fracture. Fracture mechanics relates the applied stresses to the crack size in specified geometries. Since its introduction approximately thirty years ago, fracture mechanics has evolved as a design philosophy which can be used to develop fracture-safe designs. "A major thrust in industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements in control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.IntroductionEvery modem concentrator has a state-of-the-art computer control system in place. Several of these are contemplating installing, or have installed, advanced control systems, such as expert systems, but the foundation of their control system remains the PI controller. Although the authors are not aware of any survey or published information for the mineral processing industry, it is reasonable to assume that it would be similar to the pulp and paper industry. ""The average [pulp] mill has some 2000 control loops of which 97% use PI control. This means that PID, dead time compensation, adaptive controllers, specialized algorithms, ... , constitute only 3% of the installed base."" (Bialkowski [1992]).Bialkowski [1992] also stated that ""If you have been keeping score, only 20% of the loops surveyed actually decrease variability in automatic over manual mode of operation, in the short term."" He attributed the problems to: poor tuning (30% of all loops), control valve problems (30% of all loops) and process problems (20% of all loops). There appear to be a serious need to go back to basics and review the existing control system."
