A joint venture of Ben C. Gerwick Inc., Sverdrup (now Jacobs) and DMJM (now DMJM Harris) designed the $779 mill seismic upgrade of the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge over the San Pablo Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area and provided construction support to Caltrans. Construction of the marine foundation retrofit was completed by a joint venture of Tudor Saliba/Tidewater/Koch-Skanska and their subcontractors: Pomeroy Precast Construction, AGRA Foundations, Dutra Construction and Vortex Divers. Construction management and inspection was performed by Caltrans with support of various consultants.

When done properly, benchmarking is an extremely effective tool for assessing ones performance, finding areas for improvement, and identifying strengths. However, when done improperly it can be an exercise in futility and result in incorrect observations and conclusions. A primary pitfall of benchmarking is collecting too much unreliable information. Surprisingly, the evolution of data storage and the ease of data collection are not helping with better data collection. Instead, it is just allowing one to collect more information, while at the same time inundating one with too much data. Additionally, the process of data collection can be tedious and is often times delegated to the least experienced individual resulting in unreliable and incorrect data collection and entry. Another primary pitfall of benchmarking is metrics that are cost based or poorly designed. Cost based metrics typically involve comparing unit mining costs ($/tonne). Between mines, unit mining costs are not very well correlated and have become further complicated by significant regional cost variations and mining inflation in the last years. Likewise, poorly designed metrics lead to poor benchmarking results. Examples of poorly defined metrics include: metrics that rely on information that is difficult to collect, metrics that are poorly defined, metrics which are too site focused, and metrics that measure low consequence practices.

This modern plant consists of a battery of 72 Otto Wilputte Compound Under-jet Ovens with extensive plant for the recovery by-products. The ovens produce 9000 tons of furnace coke per week together with some 17,000,000 cub. ft. of coke oven gas, which is used for heating purposes throughout the works and for heating the ovens.Coal is supplied from the, company's colliel'ies and is stored under a Coal Handling Bridge of 264 ft. span and 365 ft. overall, capable of handling 250 tons per hour. The coal storage space of 1600 ft. can. be extended to a maximum of 2800 ft.Preparation of the coal for coking involves fine grinding which is carried out as follows:-Coal is dumped from rail waggons on to a conveyer belt which delivers it to a 12 ft. x 22 ft. Bradford Breaker, with a capacity of 400 tons per hour. The coal, then approximately 4 in. in size, passes, to the mixing bins; and after careful blending is reduced in the,hammer mills to a fineness suitable for the ovens.The fire coal is elevated to the main storage bin over the battery for subsequent charging by electric larry car. The average cokingtime is 15 hrs. 36 mins. At the end of ,this period the doors, are removed and the coke pushed from the oven by a mm. The coke, is, then quenched with fresh, water and sent to the Blast Furnace in 50-ton Copper Waggons.The gas is exhausted from the ovens by Brown Boveri turbine, exhausters of 23,000. cub, ft, per min. capacity. Exhaust steam from these is used for various. purposes in the By-Product plant. After removing the last traces of tar by Electrostatic Precipitators', the gas is bubbled through sulphuric acid, the ammonia forming ammonium sulphate, which is subsequently washed, dried and bagged for sa,le as a fertilizer. The gas then goes to the Benzol Scrubber Towers, where benzol and other derivatives are recovered and later redistilled and purified. The cleaned gas is then piped to the main works for heating purposes, being used with tar to fire the steel furnaces, and also the soaking pits and reheating furnaces.BLAST FURNACES.The company is at present operating two Blast Furnaces of 800, and 1000 tons nominal daily capacity respectively. Alluvial gold was found in the Terawhiti area, West of Wellington, in the 1850s. This led to the discovery of reef gold. Periods of minor 'gold fever', company flotations, and mining activity occured between 1869 - 1973, 1881 - 1986, and in the late 1880s, with one final company active in 1911 - 1914. 1n the early 1980s, further field work was carried out. No viable mining operations resulted from any of this activity.

The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. "The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."

Lineament analysis, a remote sensing application for geological structures, has been criticized for reliance on subjective interpretations. The Mine Safety & Health Administration’s Roof Control Division performs lineament analyses with a technique that removes much subjectivity. Study areas are viewed on satellite images with software that allows examination under artificial sun azimuths and elevations. Extraneous lineaments are removed through successive steps of superposition, resulting in selection of the most robust linear features. Field investigations revealed a strong coincidence of joint and fault zones that were parallel with projected lineaments. The Roof Control Division’s successful identification of lineaments associated with roof falls and highwall failures has prompted some mine managers to incorporate lineament analysis as a mine-planning tool. The identification of potentially hazardous ground conditions will allow mine operators to obviate safety concerns that might otherwise adversely affect miner health and safety.

"The vulnerability of Canadian and U.S. companies, their directors, officers and employees to onerous penalties associated with violations of environmental statutes and common law actions has provided the impetus for the increasing use of environmental audits. This trend is developing in direct proponion to the cost and difficulty of obtaining liability insurance. Companies operating in British Columbia should be cognizant of developing legislative and enforcement trends and their implications for individual and corporate responsibility. Canadian mining companies doing business in the U.S. should be particularly aware of the environmental exposure which may be assumed with property acquisition or by operations which produce or use any of an ever-increasing list of regulated substances.The environmental audit is now a key component of prudent business planning which will identify noncompliances and environmental liabilities, outline defensive strategies, and assist in a legal defence should charges be laid. This paper will discuss the purpose and mechanics of an environmental audit with emphasis on those features which will maximize protection against statutory and common law actions.IntroductionThe environmental audit is but one weapon in a comprehensive defensive strategy for corporate and individual survival in an increasingly litigious world. The principles of the environmental audit have been formulated as a logical response by management to an ever-growing list of environmental vulnerabilities, which often have the potential to result in plant shutdowns, prosecutions or fmancial liability of major proportions. Accordingly, the audit may play a critical role in maintaining profitability as well as assisting in the defence of a company and its employees against actions taken by regulatory agencies and citi7.cns under statute and common law. Should convictions result from these actions, the penalties are likely to be ameliorated by the demonstration of due diligence through management policy supporting the audit procedure.An awareness of environmental sensitivities, strict adherence to licensing requirements, and planning for environmental emergencies are now generally considered to be as important to profitable performance as operating costs, metal prices, and labour peace. Why is this so? The increased priority given to environmental matters is partly a result of changing attitudes amongst the mining profession, but perhaps more importantly, it is also a direct consequence of the proliferation of ever more stringent environmental legislation, the targeting of management for responsibility and the draconian penalties imposed for violations of such legislation. Contributing to this trend are recent court decisions involving disputes of an environmental nature in which the standard of care required for a successful defence now requires almost super-human diligence in environmental management. The principle of ""strict liability"" (in which negligence or permit violation does not have to be shown) is also being increasingly applied in the resolution of civil actions."

A recent correlation for multiphase vertical flow by Hagedorn and Brown1,7 has been used to examine the effect of numerous variables such as pipe size, gas-liquid ratio, liquid flow rate, liquid viscosity, liquid surface tension, oil API gravity, water cut, etc., on flowing pressure gradients. Most previous correlations were derived by using a form of the general energy equation which assumed negligible changes in kinetic energy. Under certain flow conditions this can lead to serious errors in predicting pressure traverses. Examples of traverses calculated both with and without the kinetic energy term are included here. The Chew and Connully correlation for calculating changes in viscosity with changing pressure and temperature has been extended so that the effect of a changing viscosity with depth on pressure gradients can also be predicted. Examples illustrating the effect of tubing size show the importance of this correlation in determining pipe sizes for initial well completions. Limitations on production rates in small pipe sizes from excessive friction losses can be predicted with greater accuracy. The combined use of a vertical-flow correlation with a horizontal-flow correlation provides a method for determining the maximum flow rate possible from both flowing and gas-lift wells. Examples are included to illustrate application of the combined use of vertical and horizontal-flow correlations in optimizing production rates and minimizing excessive costs from over injection of gas in gas-lift wells. INTRODUCTION The problems of multiphase vertical and horizontal flow are immediately encountered in any producing well. Fig. 1' shows three stages of production: flow in porous medium, vertical flow and horizontal flow. All three stages affect the production rate from a well. If we are confronted with a particular well and consider only the variables involved in the vertical and horizontal stages of Fig. 1, we should be capable of calculating the flowing bottom-hole pressure necessary to produce a particular flow rate. A change in any of the variables results in a new solution to the problem. Recent approaches in developing horizontal and vertical-flow correlations have improved to the extent that the solution can now be obtained with more confidence than previously. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CORRELATIONS Since Poettmann and Carpenter's' original work in multiphase vertical flow, there have been many additional vertical-flow correlations developed which have greatly improved the accuracy of pressure-loss calculations. Numerous different instruments and techniques have been developed for the purpose of measuring rock stress and stress changes around excavations. The interpretation of the output from many of these instruments has often been problematic. This paper covers the research performed in attempting to analyze one particular stress measuring instrument called the Borehole Platened Flatjack (BPF) . The approach used in this analysis was to combine the analytical solution for the displacements around a borehole and the analytical solution for the bore- hole-platen interaction with the empirical stiffness behavior of the flatjack. The resulting model of the BPF response was then verified using measured laboratory data with very good results. In addition, techniques for applying the method to the field are briefly discussed. The major accomplishments of this comprehensive modeling and testing program are; 1) the establishment of the critical installation and site parameters of the hydraulic pressure cell and 2) the development of a systematic procedure for calibrating the cell based on the given values of these critical parameters.

This article describes two new concepts regarding the CFA (Auger Cast) piles. The first one, MALI Effect, is an approach to control the casting phase, while the second one, NETA Shear, is a technique which converts the drilling rig into a geo-mechanical tool. We look upon the system of the auger and the ground as a piston inside a cylinder. When concrete (grout) is pumped into that system, an up lift force is generated (We call that force MALI Effect). That up lift force reduces the needed tension in the pull up cable. By analyzing the tension force in the cable we detect the up lift force of the concrete. That pushup force is the product of the real concrete pressure at the bottom of the auger by the area of that bottom. As the area is known, the real pressure is accurately calculated. A control loop which is based on MALI Effect is very sensitive, precise, objective, reliable and easy to be used. All the process is based on pure real physical measurements. The system has no assumptions, no comparisons, no parameters, no zeroing and no adjustments. When we penetrate into the ground like a theoretical screw, for about a meter in depth, and then brake the main cable while rotating the auger, a set of forces generates. As the auger tends to keep penetration, but the cable holds it - a tension force develops (We call that force NETA Shear). Analysis of that tension force shows that it relates to the ultimate shearing capacity of the ground.

Blasting cap precision is of major importance to advanced blast design. New technologies have introduced the use of microchips within detonator casings in the hope that the electronic control of the timing element will increase the accuracy of the cap and therefore improve the results of perimeter control blasting applications. The electronic detonators have proven to be accurate in timing tests done to date. They boast cap scatter results to microsecond accuracy, but the question is, does this degree of accuracy actually prove to be beneficial during practical use in the industry, or are conventional technologies applicable.

Coal mines in southern West Virginia, south-western Virginia and eastern Kentucky have experienced coal bumps at least since 1933. Most of the bumps have occurred due to high cover, strong roof and floor strata and stress concentrations due to the mining sequence. A longwall mine in eastern Kentucky first experienced coal bumps on the tailgate side of the longwall face in 1989. The bumps continued until 1996. The bumps were the result of: Thick overburden up to 2200 feet Strong roof and floor (strata strengths up to 25,600 psi UCS and elasticity modulus up to 4,800,000 psi Previous over-mining in places Sandstone channels Not all characteristics occurred simultaneously. The bumps produced seismic events recorded up to 4.3 (Richter scale magnitude), and damaged pillars that were up to 147 by 152 feet in size.

Using powerful database management software, nested-field analysis and microanalysis of narratives have been made of West Virginia accident data, resulting in a new approach for targeting and prioritizing safety interventions by county, mine size, specific mine, job title, type injury, etc. and combinations of these parameters. The analyses have been useful in focusing training and discussion sessions on specific work problems, trends, conditions, and situations for targeted groups of miners. Application of the technique will be presented in this paper, along with comparisons of various mine performance measures.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1 pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125kt/d (137,700 stpd). The most recent expansion included the installation of a semiautogenous mill (SAG) designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation, including conventional and column cells, and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modern distributed control system. PTFI’s operations are located in the Ertsberg mining district of Irian Jaya’s Jayawijaya Mountains, the eastern-most province of the republic of Indonesia on the Island of New Guinea. PTFI, the operator, is owned by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the government of Indonesia (9.4%) and private Indonesian investors (9.3%).

The Stress Control Method improves productivity and safety in underground coal mining. The method stabilizes the roofs and floors of mine openings in both shallow and deep coal beds, regardless of whether or not there are ground stability problems. This paper describes the means by which a tapered pillar experiment is used to collect in situ data, which is then used as input for a computer model. The resulting computer model is then used to optimize Stress Control design for the mine under study. The behavior of any underground coal mine is not elastic, as is generally conceived in the conventional view of rock mechanics, but rather is highly time-dependent and site-specific. Unfortunately, conventional rock mechanics methods based on the elastic principle are not able to capture the highly non-elastic nature of ground behavior which actually occurs. To capture actual behavior, a new method of study is required. In this regard, geomechanical study of an underground coal mine may be compared to studying the behavior of a living fish. Its true behavior zannot be understood by examining it "dead in the laboratory. It Is the "live" nature of the coal mine that is required for design optimization of the Stress Control Method in the given mine. The Stress Control Method is based on a time-dependent theory of the global behavior of the mine ground, which generally contradicts the conventional elastic theory of ground behavior. Therefore, site-specific adaptation of the Stress Control Method required a comprehensive understanding of the global behavior of the mine as a function of time and site-specific ground conditions.
