"Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."

"This paper describes a new, proven approach for tailing disposal. Not only is the disclosed system less damaging to the environment, it is also less costly to operate, to close down and maintain in perpetuity. The basic concept is to discharge thickened tailing from one permanent location.This creates a conical or hill-like deposit which:(1) requires lower perimeter dykes for equivalent storage capacity;(2) eliminates decant towers and decant lines;(3) requires no steep dams built of tailing;(4) is stable:(5) requires only a small pond outside the deposit;(6) decreases pollution of the surrounding environment by water seepage and deflation; and(7) simplifies abandonment and ""closing-down"" operations.The approach is made possible by the fact that, at a sufficiently high ratio of solids to water, tailing material can be made to accumulate at slopes of 5 or 6 per cent -- considerably steeper than possible by traditional methods using low solids-to-water ratios. To achieve the necessary solids-water ratio (35 to 60 per cent), it may be necessary to install a thickener. It is expected, however, that at many concentrators it may be possible to discharqe relatively clear plant water through a line separate from the tailing line, thus reducing the load on the thickener."

"Hard rock mines move large volumes of material, which can cause the conveyors that are essential to this movement to suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded.This article provides an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design as well as a report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, NV. Here, performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine.The importance of transfer pointsConveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance is the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created.The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material — cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage or airborne dust — that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems and issues with community relations. Medium carbon, low alloy, high-strength steels containing Ni, Cr, and Mo are used for the fabrication of various types of high-strength fasteners required for launch vehicle structures. Cold heading properties and response to hardening and tempering are the essential requirements of the material for fabrication and application, respectively. Combining these two requirements is essentially warranted in high-strength fastener-grade steels. Cold heading properties require ductility, which can be achieved through spheroidizing treatments. In the absence of a suitable spheroidizing cycle for medium carbon 3.8 Ni, 1.8 Cr, 0.3 Mo steel, experiments were carried out with a theoretical understanding of the alloy system. This paper presents the experiments and results obtained after a spheroidizing treatment, which was carried out to optimize the process. Hardness measurements were carried out and microstructural studies were conducted to assess the spheroidization process and to determine the optimal spheroidization parameters.

This publication is designed to be helpful in promoting health and safety in tunneling and related operations. The format has been selected and arranged to provide a condensed guide for safety personnel, inspection and investigative agencies, design and project engineers, and others responsible for the health and safety of workmen. All the precautionary measures recommended are based on actual conditions observed, from investigations of fatal or serious accidents, and from research conducted to find ways and means of alleviating hazards and unhealthful conditions. Many of the recommended rules are included in State laws and in the general safety requirements of the construction industry. Explanatory, descriptive, and qualifying information has been largely omitted in this publication to keep basic data in more useful and compact form. Included in the appendixes are special precautions for gassy (methane atmospheres) tunnels and tunnels where petroleum products are encountered.

Molten NaNO3-NaNO2-KNO3mixture is used as a heat transfer medium at high temperature. One of the most important properties of this mixture is the heat capacity. In the present work, the enthalpy change with temperature was measured by the drop calorimetric method to evaluate the heat capacity. The results are summarized as follows: The enthalpy of the mixture increased linearly with the temperature. From the slope of the line, the heat capacity was evaluated. The heat capacity of pure NaNO3, NaNO2and KNO3was 0.129,0.110 and 0.142 kJ/mol/K, respectively. These values are in fairly good agreement with the published data. In the binary and ternary systems, the molar additivity of heat capacity, which is well known as Neumann-Kopp’s law, was obtained. The heat capacity of HTS1and HTS2, which are well known ternary mixtures of practical use, were in the range of published data.

The mining industry, though, has always looked for ways to reduce production costs — no matter the state of the economy or commodity prices. The fact is, when planning a new mine or the expansion of an existing one, mining companies gamble that commodity prices will be reasonably high when a project comes onstream. It takes millions of dollars and several years to bring a mine into operation. And a lot can happen economically between the time management gives the go-ahead for a new project and its completion.

Our objective was to develop a transfer function model of phosphate heap leaching for design, optimization and control. The procedure included analysis of time-lapse photography of a laboratory heap. Our experimental results confirm the predicted system transfer function kinetics. Our conclusion was that the transfer function and z transform that we have developed will allow us to control flow rate and pH online.

The study comprised of the investigation into the sensitization characteristics of AISI 409 titanium stabilized ferritic stainless steel during low heat input welding. AISI 409 is a fully ferritic stainless steel used in catalytic converters and tubing for automotive exhaust systems due to the supposition that sensitization does not occur during low heat input welding. Two plates of 2 and 4 mm were tested for sensitization during low heat input welding. The study confirmed that chromium carbide (M23C6) precipitation occurs on the grain boundaries in the heat-affected zone with consequent depletion of Cr adjacent to the grain boundaries during welding. In the 2 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.1 kJ/mm to above 0.25 kJ/mm and in the 4 mm plate sensitization occurred in the heat input range of 0.2 to 0.9 kJ/mm. Ti stabilization is ineffective at the heat inputs used in this investigation due to the rapid cooling rate through the temperature region where TiC precipitates. The presence of N was found to be detrimental since it consumes Ti on cooling, forming TiN, effectively lowering the amount of Ti available for TiC formation during rapid cooling after welding. Annealing for 5 minutes at 725°C does not improve the sensitization characteristics of the welded plate. There is a linear increase in grain size as heat input increases. The resistance to pitting corrosion decreases in the sensitized, welded plate in theheat-affected zone adjacent to the fusion line of welding. ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. "Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine and ultrafine slurries. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidisation water. In a former study, we investigated the physical mechanisms that govern the transport of ultrafine particles (in the range 10 to 80 µm) inside Falcon UF concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling. Initially, we derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. The present paper proposes an extension of the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios. The paper discusses how hindered settling has been added into the initial model to account for solid concentration effects. The modified model is tested against experiments carried out with a laboratory scale UF Falcon concentrator from dilute conditions up to 30 vol%. A good agreement between measurements and model predictions is obtained, which confirms that our hypotheses about the physics of separation inside a UF Falcon separator remain valid even at high concentrations.INTRODUCTIONThe Falcon concentrator is a fast spinning bowl that is fed at its centre of rotation. It uses centrifugal force to separate particles that are transported inside a thin liquid film that flows upward along the inclined wall of the bowl (McAlister and Armstrong, 1998). Due to differential settling, dense and coarse particles are concentrated inside the bowl whereas light and fine particles are rejected with the overflow stream. The fast rotation speed of the bowl yields high centrifugal force several hundred times the attraction of Earth. Despite the thinness of the liquid film (between 100 µm and 1 mm with a Falcon L40) where separation takes place, the Falcon concentrator can treat high flowrates (up to 30 L/min). At the bottom of the bowl, an impeller transmits the bowl rotation to the feed, which drains upward by centrifugal force as soon as it hits the base of the spinning bowl (Figure 1)."

A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

This report describes in detail the work done on the development of the Time Domain Reflectometry Microcomputer (TDRM). Modifications to the FMC-Model 302A Cable Fault Locator is described in Appendix D. The TDRM unit uses an 8080 microcomputer to accurately locate major faults in low capacitance cables to within ± 1 foot when properly calibrated. Major faults in high capacitance cables are usually located within ± 5 feet. The upper limits of fault detection are <1 kilohm shunt fault and >7 ohm series fault. In practice fault detection limits are reduced to <300 ohms shunt fault and >30 ohms series fault because of discontinuities caused by cable repair.

The El Pe±on gold-silver deposit comprises four epithermal, low-sulfidation veins, which contain 2.9 million oz Au and 48 million oz Ag. Provisional data on alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions, and vein textures constrain the chemistry and hydrology of the hydrothermal system responsible for ore mineralisation at El Pe±on. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, illite, smectite, calcite, chlorite, and pyrite. Alteration minerals suggest the existence of near neutral pH, low salinity hydrothermal fluids, which circulated over an area greater than 18 km2. Complex mineral zonation patterns result from variations in host rock permeability and composition, overprinting alteration possibly produced by thermal waters from surficial and peripheral parts of the hydrothermal system, and supergene weathering in the hyperarid environment. As cities are growing all over the world, the need for urban transportation facilities are on the rise. Designers (of these facilities) today are faced with a number of constraints for their design, of the most is the space limitation and impact of new construction activities to the community. A typical subway station, as the focus of this paper, is approximately 600 to 1000 feet long, 50 feet wide and 2 to 3 story high. With such a large volume of construction activities, it is easily realized why underground stations are becoming obvious choice for larger cities eventhough the cost could be 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as an aerial station and 4 to 5 times that of an at-grade station [O&apos;Neil et. al.(1977)]. Since cost is an important factor which is always increasing, therefore, the designer should have a good planning, consider alternatives for design and come up with a realistic design with minimum impact to the community. This paper is about the geotechnical considerations that the designer should be aware of. PLANNING A 1977 report [O&apos;Neil et. al.(1977)] on the construction costs for a number of underground subway stations indicate that about 4 0% of the cost is site-controlled, 35% is structural items, and 25% is finish and equipment. It is seen that of opportunity exists for cost savings in the site selection and proper use of the site. Once the site is selected, the cost of construction become controlled by urban conditions at the site, geotechnical conditions, station size and depth. Therefore, the design-solution is very much site-specific. The geotecnical designer should collect the following information at the early phase of the design:

Adequate load transfer is considered essential for optimum ground support and is increasingly important in weak roof and/or high stress environments. If adequate load transfer is achieved not only can this have a positive impact on the resulting roof behavior, but it may also allow the use of lower and hence more economic densities of roof support. A wide variety of post-groutable cable bolts are currently in use in the Australian coal mining industry, each of varying capacity, design, and grouting methodology. Though all of the cables are supplied with the appropriate steel specification, strength, and modulus data, the Australian coal mining industry does not have access to a comprehensive and comparative database on the corresponding load transfer performance, which is a critical problem. On the basis of the above, this paper describes the methodology and results of a laboratory pull testing program that aims to assess the impact of cable bolt design on load transfer, and specifically, the impact on the capacity and stiffness of the anchorage. As part of the testing program, 19 cables were tested including (1) plain-strand cables installed in holes drilled with 28 to 55 mm diameter drill bits and (2) bulbed and nutcaged cables installed in holes drilled with 42 to 64 mm diameter drill bits. Other parameters assessed included the significance of smooth and profiled wire, wire packing, and expanded geometry bulbs. The main results of the testing indicate that in comparison to plain-strand cables, if the cable is bulbed or nutcaged, the capacity of the anchor can increase by up to 400%, and the peak stiffness by between one and two orders of magnitude. The results also indicate that increasing hole diameter may have a positive impact on load transfer in the case of bulbed or nutcaged cables and a negative impact on plain-strand cables. No conclusive results were obtained with regard to the impact of grout strength on load transfer.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

INTRODUCTION The Premise Not much time has to be spent in a tunneling project to realize the tremendous interdependence that exists among the various unit operations. The research that is to be described attempts to examine one set of these linked operations, namely, the effect of cutters on muck handling properties. All too often research focuses on too minute an aspect of a problem for the results to be of much immediate, practical use. The goal of this research is to avoid this specificity. Apologies are tendered if this goal is missed. It is known that the mode of flow of bulk solids under the influence of gravity -- emptying a bin or hopper -- is dependent on several basic parameters. The size of the particles and the distribution of sizes (consist) determine whether the solids will first flow out of a given aperture; the cohesion of the solids will determine if flow will continue after the bin is opened; and the angle of internal friction determines the size of the flow regime (1,2,3). It is well understood that the latter two parameters affect the behavior of bulk material on a conveyor belt. Cohesion of material to a belt is always an undesired problem. Heaping of material on a belt depends on the material&apos;s internal friction. It is also known that varying the particle size, and the packing density of the material can affect the material&apos;s angle of internal friction (4,5). "IntroductionThe Beaverlodge Operation of Eldorado Nuclear Limited is a uranium property located near the north shore of Lake Athabasca about 7 miles from Uranium City, Saskatchewan.The mill is a 2000 tpd carbonate leach operation producing a high grade yellowcake concentrate.The Lamella Thickener was purchased to replace a 55 foot conventional unit which had deteriorated beyond repair. The cost of the unit was considerably lower than for a conventional unit, installation was much simpler and the unit is much more compact allowing it to be installed in the mill basement and be insulated completely.The unit was sized according to the results of tests performed both by the supplier and Beaverlodge engineering staff. The supplier guaranteed overflow clarities of less than 100 ppm suspended solids. The Lamella thickener was developed by A. Johnson Co. of Stockholm, Sweden, is manufactured under license by Parkson Corporation of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and is distributed in Canada by A. Johnson Co. of Montreal."

This Bureau of Mines study was made to obtain and present facts concerning the production and marketing of rare-earth metals and thorium in the Central and Southern Rocky Mountains (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming, referred to in this report as the region) and to review the current demand for these elements in the United States. Little or no published information was available on the marketing practices for these commodities. As a result of many inquiries from industry, potential prospectors, and the general public, the various factors of resources, production (present and potential), marketing, and consumption have been investigated, and the results are set forth in this report.
