Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

The target of the current metallurgical industry is to recycle and utilize all their by-products, so as to close the sustainable production loop. Slags are the important wastes and by-products of metallurgical industry, which have been treated, recycled and used worldwide. The present paper summarizes the current status of utilization of the various slags from ferrous and non-ferrous metal production, as well as waste incineration, and recycling of salt fluxes in secondary metal production. In addition, the environmental issues of the metallurgical slags are addressed. The metallurgical oxide slags have stone-like properties and, thus, their major applications are in civil engineering field. The slags should be recycled, modified and processed in a proper way, by taking the environmental impact into consideration. With the treatment of salt slags for melting aluminium scraps, as an example, the recycling and elution properties of the salt slags are discussed. Our research indicates that the viscosity of the salt flux is increased with addition of non-metallic components, that a certain percentage of fines remain in suspension, which determines the viscosity, affecting the settling of heavier materials. High slag viscosity will lead to more fine aluminium metal entrapped in the salt slag (may also be seen as a high temperature slurry), and thus increase the load of salt slag recycling. As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. A number of examples illustrate the use of the new advances and a final example indicates the development of risk analysis curves in the coupling of sampling precision to sale of a commodity.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Bourgeois, F S, 2015. Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 40 ft of advance because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation) as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

Technological advances in underground coal mining have reduced fatalities but may not have reduced worker exposure to cumulative injury risk factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cumulative injuries before and after the implementation of technological advances in underground coal mining and to make a general cost estimate for these injuries. A previously published algorithm was utilized to identify cumulative injuries within the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) database for two data sets: 1983-1984 and 2003-2004. For both, the following were determined: the number and percentage of cumulative injuries, the average days lost, the average age at the time of injury, the average years of experience and the general cost estimate by body part. The percentage of cumulative injuries remained largely unchanged (37 percent in the 1983-1984 period and 33 percent in the 2003-2004 period). The average number of lost days due to cumulative injuries increased (36±55 days and 62±82 days, respectively), which may have been due to the increased worker age (seven years older in the 2003-2004 period), increased length of employment (seven years longer in the 2003-2004 period) or other factors such as changes in medical practices. Cumulative injuries to the back decreased by 10 percent, while cumulative injuries to the knee increased by 8 percent. The reduction in back injuries may be due to the implementation of assist devices, while the increase in knee injuries may be related to kneeling/crawling in low-seam mines. Cumulative injuries were found to remain a major financial burden on the industry. Recently, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed tools to assist mining companies with incorporating an ergonomics process into their existing health and safety programs. The participating companies have reported tremendous success. Therefore, it is recommended that ergonomics processes be implemented as a means to systematically identify and address the root causes to cumulative injuries and ultimately reduce costs.

"There is a dire need of a technology which can break the mineral interfaces to enhance liberation with minimum energy consumption in mineral beneficiation processes. Understanding of mineral crystal system and interfaces is essential to develop such methodology. So, this study is carried out to find out the role of mineral crystallography in milling and liberation. Data related of mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number, Bond Work Index and beneficiation processes were collected from literature and detailed statistical analysis has been carried out to establish a correlation among these parameters. It was found that atomic weight and cell parameters shown statistically significant relationship with Vickers Hardness Number of minerals, which controls the milling characteristics of ores. Liberation characteristics of five different kinds of ores were analyzed considering the types of interfaces between valuable and gangue minerals. It was found that phase interfaces play vita role in liberation and coarser liberation can be achieved in the minerals of incoherent crystal systems like manganese and zinc ores. Study of this subject can help us to understand the effect of stress wave propagation in solids and its effect on crystal interfaces. It can also help us to design a technology of future to break the mineral interfaces.INTRODUCTIONCommunition is energy intensive mineral processing operation and consumes up to 2% of the total electric power generated in the world. Energy consumption due to comminution is increasing every year as there is growing needs to exploit lower grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods like gravity separation, floatation, leaching etc. Currently, comminution methods are selected based on the reduction ratio and energy consumption but effect of grinding methods on subsequent processing methods specially on liberation also need to be studied to optimize the entire beneficiation process. Most of the attempts made in past to minimize the energy consumption in milling to enhance the mineral liberation were focused on compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Kilpelm and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller et al, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang el al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). But the role of mineral crystallography on milling and liberation behavior of minerals not fully explored yet."

In the middle of 2000, BHP Billiton implemented a Six Sigma Plus business improvement program known as Operating Excellence. It was developed based on a business bottom line initiative to deliver 35 - 40c/share and was one of the BHP Billiton strategies to deliver $2 earnings per share and a longer term $40 share price (BHP share price). Cannington is a silver, lead and zinc mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Through implementing Six Sigma Plus Cannington wanted to:have in-house capabilities to change and improve; tailor for the needs of each business unit and department; have æSharing of its KnowledgeÆ as a tool for improvement and have a competitive edge across Cannington û to be better than our competitors; learn from and leverage off the successes of improved safety and prior business improvement efforts; and ensure networking and sharing of information have common measurement systems across all assets. As with most business improvement programs û Six Sigma Plus was met with some degree of skepticism, especially given the amount of resources involved. After 18 months, much of this skepticism has been replaced with enthusiasm as peopleÆs understanding and acceptance of its fundamental concepts are being realised. The idea behind Six Sigma Plus is that it combines sound technical solutions with high acceptance by those who need to work with or implement the change. The future vision for Six Sigma Plus is that it become part of what we do at Cannington û just like safety and environment û so that Six Sigma tools and methodologies are used in our every day work.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, silicon, solar cells Silicon has been the dominant material in the photovoltaic (PV) industry since its application in the space industry in 1958. This review focuses on crystalline silicon solar cells, primarily due to their dominance in the photovoltaic industry, omitting other photovoltaic cell technologies such as second generation (e.g. thin films) and third generation (e.g. nano-structured solar cells). The value chain for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells has been reviewed. The primary processing steps for the production of silicon solar cells from quartz are as follows: bulk production of metallurgical-grade silicon via carbothermic reduction in a submerged furnace, refining of metallurgical-grade silicon via the chemical means to polycrystalline silicon, or through the metallurgical route to solar-grade silicon, wafer manufacturing, and, lastly, silicon solar cell manufacturing. During downstream processing, solar cells are interconnected and encapsulated into solar modules (panels), which can be used individually or incorporated into a photovoltaic system for electricity generation and supply. The cost for crystalline silicon based solar cells is approaching one US dollar per watt peak ($1/Wp), while the most cost-effective solar modules in industry have reported costs below $1/Wp, and are based on CdTe thin films. Solar cell energy conversion efficiencies as high as 22% have been reported in industry for crystalline silicon solar cells.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.

"A blast with explosives creates vibration waves in the zone around the blast.The prediction of the intensity of vibrations is important because people in the cinity demand that the vibrations do not disturb them, and society imposes limits on the vibrations. The U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) showed that the easurement of the particle velocity U predicts the risk of damage from vibrations. A currentapproach of blasters to monitor vibrations is to measure them with a seismograph at several distances S, and create a graph of U vs. S and the explosive charge “W” according to the equation U = K / (S / W)N where K and N are constants that depend on the blast method and the nature of the ground over the distance S. Though useful, this equation is empirical, and the results predicted from it are very variable, as shown by figure 1 which indicates that a prediction of U can deviate significantly from the actual value. Moreover, a minimum of two seismograph measurements at two values of S are required to establish the curve. However, here now exists another very convenient method to predict U; it is with the simulator Vibmas, which is based on the fundamental principles of how a blast reates vibrations. This simulator takes into account not only W but rather all the blast parameters, the type of explosive and the properties of the rock. Moreover, to establish the calculation of U as a function of S, only one seismograph measurement is required rather than two as for the USBM method. This last difference is important because it makes it easy to predict U not only as a function of S, but also as a function of the orientation of S. On the site this allows much safer control of the vibrations, and the use of larger explosive charges which reduce excavation costs. The article presents results from a field case at a hydroelectric project in Canada, where the deviation was very moderate. Use of this vibration simulator on the Web is very easy."

The effect of SiO2addition on the decomposition of Li2CO3was investigated at temperatures up to 1000ºC. It was found that addition of SiO2greatly enhanced the decomposition of Li2CO3. The main decomposition reaction started at around 600ºC, and completed just above the melting point of Li2CO3. The major decomposition product was Li2O?SiO2irrespective of the Li2CO3to SiO2mixing ratio while both reactants were available. It was ascertained that a liquid layer betweenLi2CO3and SiO2particles formed and facilitated the decomposition reaction. The governing reaction of the decomposition was the one between the dissolved Li2CO3and SiO2in the liquid layer to form Li2O?SiO2. The decomposition rate was independent of the Li2CO3/SiO2mixingratio until either one had been completely exhausted. When excess Li2CO3existed, it further reacted with the initial product of Li2O?SiO2to form 2Li2O?SiO2. When SiO2was found in excess, on the other hand, no further reaction took place. This is attributed to the fact that uponLi2CO3exhaustion there is no liquid phase available to facilitate further reaction. The apparent activation energy of the decomposition of Li2CO3in existence with SiO2is 198 kJ mol-1.

The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. This will result in an unprecedented opportunity for a full variographic comparison between RC and BH sampling, aimed at designing specific, fit-for-purpose sampling procedures as a function of ore quality, cut-off grades and important contaminant levels.CITATION:Engström, K and Esbensen, K H, 2017. The United States Antarctic Program (USAP), through its principal support contractor Raytheon Polar Services Co. (RPSC), has recently completed a three-year project comprising nearly 936 m (3,071 ft) of undersnow utility tunnels at Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole, Antarctica. The tunnel serves the new station facilities that are currently under construction. It houses the piping that conveys fresh water from current and future water well sites, as well as waste water to repositories in abandoned wells. The undersnow tunnels permit year-round access for system operations and maintenance. The network of tunnels is entirely unlined and unsupported. And, for the most part, it maintains a rectangular cross section of 1.8-m-wide x 3-m-high (6 x 10 ft).The tunnel runs from 6 to 14 m (18 to 45 ft) below the surface. Eight 1-m- (3.3-ft-) diam raises bored from the surface serve the network as emergency escapeways.

The seawalls that surround Ellis Island were constructed in the early 1900s and now show varying degrees of deterioration. An innovative approach to the structural repair of the seawalls was developed, which consisted of the use of micropiles for stabilization of vertical and horizontal seawall movements. The micropiles were installed through the existing seawalls and penetrated through a thick overburden, consisting of soft alluvial deposits and relatively hard glacial till, and were bonded into Manhattan Schist. Drilling of the micropiles often encountered timber and other obstructions. The selection of micropiles for stabilization of the seawalls offered significant advantages over other foundation systems and over alternative soil improvement techniques. They allowed drilling through a variety of materials without the need for significant retooling or changes to the drilling procedure. This reduced the impact of foundation construction on the sensitive historical landscape and structures, and prevented the need for significant foundation work from the water side of the seawalls. In addition, micropiles offered relatively high installation rates and flexibility to adapt to the varying conditions along the seawalls.

Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.
