"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

Small diameter cast-in-place bored piles (pinpiles) have been installed throughout the world since 1952, but only more recently in the United States. The special features of their construction and performance makes them ideally suited for structural underpinning applications in difficult ambient and geological conditions. This paper describes the underpinning of part of a major industrial facility near Mobile, Alabama. In addition to being a most interesting and successful case history, per se, the paper also describes in detail a fundamental test pile program which has afforded a unique insight into the basics of load transfer mechanisms.

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and drilled displacement (DD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, hospitals, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of DD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilized by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/DD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current DD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

Upgrading of a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample provided by Kingstream Steel Ltd was investigated using low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse flotation. The ore contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina, with the main minerals in the ore being amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent) and quartz (14 per cent). The concentrate obtained after low intensity magnetic separation contained 66.6 per cent iron and 6.34 per cent silica with an iron recovery of 72 per cent. This concentrate was further treated by reverse flotation to increase the iron content and reduce the silica content to meet the requirements for direct reduction iron (DRI) feed grade.

A serious problem confronted the city of Gunnison early in 1958 in that, for a few months during each spring runoff, the water supply derived from the Gunnison River became polluted to an unsafe point. The city management had the choice of building a new filter plant to replace the old unworkable one or drilling wells to develop a ground water supply. The cost of a new filter plant was estimated at $180,000 compared to $50,000 for 6 wells, pumps, and additional water lines, hence their decision to attempt the development of sufficient ground water. Six wells at 300 gpm per well were estimated as necessary to handle the peak usage of 1800 gpm, compared to only 600 gpm winter usage. Although the water table is only about 7 feet below the surface, existing private wells drilled at random locations were producing much less than 300 gpm. The problem was to find sufficient quantities from about 6 wells. Since the presence of an ancient bedrock channel was suspected, which would be expected to localize greater quantities of water, the city of Gunnison authorized a resistivity survey to investigate bedrock topography below unconsolidated gravels. Survey results were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a fairly detailed bedrock contour map, Fig. 1. This map was used in selection of all well sites. The city of Gunnison is situated in a flat, broad, Quaternary gravel-filled valley (terrain dips south at 20 feet per mile) at the junction of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The valley, about 2-4 miles wide, is bordered by hills of Tertiary volcanics to the northwest, Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments to the north and northeast, and pre-Cambrian granite and gneiss to the south. One previous deep test well at the west end of the city hit pre-Cambrian granite at 496 feet, which, allowing for 40 feet of surface gravels, makes the older sedimentary section 456 feet thick. This section is probably all Jurassic Morrison formation, consisting of the Saltwash sandstone overlain by the much thicker section of Brushy Basin shales and mudstones. According to the driller's logs, each well was bottomed in what is believed to be Brushy Basin shale. FIELD PROCEDURE A standard Gish-Rooney type of resistivity apparatus was employed, which used 45-volt dry batteries as a direct-current power source. Applied voltages could be selected from 45 volts to a 270-volt maximum. Copper-coated steel stakes were employed as current electrodes and porous porcelain pots as potential electrodes to avoid possible polarization effects with direct current. The expanding Wenner electrode configuration was utilized for this investigation and measurements were made at 20 40, 60, 80, and 100-foot spacings,

"We will attempt to explain the basic workings of a modern seismograph and how the recorded data can be interpreted, not only for determining compliance to the regulations, but also in determining whether or not a seismograph record is accurate and valid. We will discuss some parameters that should be included in all seismographic recordings. We will give examples and use overhead slidesto show examples of both accurate and valid recordings, and tampered and inaccurate seismograph recordings. Much of the information presented will be basic in nature, and will reflect the opinions and personal experiences of the author. A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. Base Metal (Cu, Ni, Mo, Zn, Co etc.) analysis traditionally has been very slow in conventional analytical laboratories which can lead to additional costs being incurred in waiting time of drill rigs or mining excessively off-reef. Recent developments in the automation of analytical laboratories now allow for very rapid turn-around times for base metal analytical data which can help reduce such costs as well as reduce the unit costs of the analyses themselves. 2.0 CONVENTIONAL ANALYTICAL LABORATORY PRACTICE Conventional analytical laboratories are necessarily are very manual. Sample preparation is slow and laborious, samples are moved from stage to stage manually and, typically, all samples are processed in batches so a sample which is the first to be, say, milled has to wait for the complete milling of the batch before it advances to the next stage eg. mixed with wax prior to pelletising for XRF analysis. Inevitably this results in long sample data turn-around times for laboratories handling large numbers of samples. Manual sample preparation can only be accelerated by increasing staff which increases costs and can lead to additional errors being introduced. Cleaning of sample preparation equipment, eg. crushers and mills, between samples is essential to avoid cross-contamination between samples and this is slow and labour-intensive. In manual sample preparation the correct sample numbers staying with the samples is totally dependent on the efficiency of laboratory operators. It is extremely difficult to detect when errors have occurred due to the switching of sample numbers during the sample preparation stages. Running duplicates and QC samples at best is only partially successful in detecting when sample number switching errors have occurred. Errors of this nature and cross-contamination problems due to incomplete cleaning of sample preparation equipment tend to occur when laboratories are working at pressure due to high sample numbers and when supervisors are not present during 24/7 laboratory operations which is often required on plant process control laboratories. These problems are common to all conventional analytical laboratories and their magnitude is dependent on the level of control and efficiency of QC systems practised by individual laboratories. The disadvantages of conventional manual analytical laboratories can be summarized as follows:- 1. Labour-intensive which is costly especially when multiple shifts have to be used during 24/7 operations.

Dado que la comunidad de Michiquillay recibe una gran cantidad del canon minero a través de la gestión de la Municipalidad del mismo nombre, se planteó mejorar las relaciones de parentesco y la inmersión en la modernidad económica y socia de dicha comunidad y pasar de una economía informal a una economía social o solidaria. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el proyecto de participación colectiva entre los miembros de la comunidad Michiquilllay y La Encañada, con el objetivo de construir una propuesta de privatización del proyecto minero Michicallay. El trabajo de campo se realizó en los ocho sectores y se desarrolló desde hace dos años, alcanzando la comunicación y sostenibilidad del mismo.

Micropiles are commonly utilized for applications other than foundation retrofit. In bridges, for example, micropiles can serve as the permanent foundation elements or can be used in temporary support applications. In this paper, a case study on the use of micropiles for the 18th Street Expressway Bridge rehabilitation/repair project in Kansas City, Kansas is presented. In the project, micropiles were utilized for support of six temporary jacking structures, which allowed the bridge to be lifted while repairs were completed. A group of six micropiles was required to support each jacking structure. The required compressive service load per micropile was approximately 300 kips (1300 kN) and the settlement of the micropiles under the service load was to be limited to 0.5 in. (12.7 mm). Two field compression tests were conducted as part of the project. The field load test data was integrated within a soil-structure interaction capacity approach in order to analyze and permit the shortening of the design bond length for the production micropiles.

The objective of this contract was to review the results of the Rushton Mining experiment in work organization and design, to explore the extension of knowledge gained from Rushton to other underground coal mines, and to conduct a search for a potential mine site for a demonstration project. The primary focus of the contract was on a search process to provide the research team with the opportunity to evaluate the different potential experimental sites, in order to select one or more with the highest potential for success. This search process also provides the various levels of union and company officials the opportunity to fully understand the context of the research before making a decision on whether to participate. While the search project failed in its attempt to locate a specific mine site, the research team believes that this is not a rejection of the actual project but rather extreme caution because of the uncertainty within the UMWA.

While the original purpose of the Bureau of Mines work on fluorine micas was to synthesize large single crystals or film suitable to replace natural muscovite or phlogopite, the objective was broadened to include development of the many possible fluorine micas as a class of new, unique materials. Several methods were developed for the synthesis of the fluorine micas at atmospheric pressure: Solid state reaction, melting in crucibles, internal resistance electric melting, and arc resistance electric melting. The latter two methods are now med commercially. A variety of fluoromicas were synthesized by isomorphic substitution including disilicic, trisilicic, and tetrasilicic. Fluorophlogopite, KMg3AlSi3O10F2, is the fluoromica most widely used. While most of the fluoromicas are completely stable to water, many water-swelling fluoromicas and fluoromontmorrilonoids were synthesized. Single crystals or film of the fluorine micas were grown to 2 inches or more by a number of methods, but none has as yet proved economical. In the report, detailed data and descriptions are given on compositions, syntheses, products, and uses, and on the properties including physical, dielectric, chemical, X-ray, optical, and structural.

It was three years ago when the “storm of the century” had taken a firm grip over the Pacific West Coast and inland areas. At the Big Sky ski resort in Montana on Christmas morning two ski patrollers set out to perform an explosives “hand charge” avalanche control mission that would see only one return. It has been difficult to determine exactly what happened. Investigators do know that there were three separate and consecutive attempts to light a safety fuse, when it had apparently been burning since the first attempt. Time ran out after the third attempt. Although this accident has had a profound impact on North American avalanche control programs, I am sure it pales in contrast to the shock and grief experienced by family members who lost a loved one.

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. Recently, a new kind of filtration has emerged, namely nano-filtration (NF). It is a membrane-based process which exhibits totally unique separation characteristics for dissolved salts as well as for many non-charged species. By exploiting the particular separation characteristics of this new membrane type, many unique and novel separations have been made possible. The basis for separation by nanofiltration is the negative surface charge of the membrane. This results in rejection of multivalent anions, whilst associated cations are also rejected to maintain electro-neutrality. This peculiar property enables separation of dissolved ions such as sulphate and copper from acid, whilst the acid may be purified for reuse. This paper aims at providing an overview of the principles of nanofiltration, illustrated by particular examples.

Since its inception CEMI (Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation) has focused on facilitating innovative solutions to the mining industry in six strategic research areas; GeoRisk, ConstructMine, ValueMine, FindMine, SustainMine and MineTech (visit www.miningexcellence.ca for details). This paper focuses on CEMI?s largest project to date, Ventilation on Demand (VOD). Energy consumption in mines can account for upwards of 40% of a mines operating cost, with a significant portion of this been consumed by the ventilation requirements. VOD provides a significant opportunity to reduce overall mine ventilation requirements and subsequently energy costs, while potentially increasing mine productivity. CEMI is currently in year 2 of an assessment of VOD, focusing on the financial, physical and equipment viability of utilizing such systems in both new and existing mines. This two year program, to be completed by March 31, 2011, is designed to systematically assess such a system to determine if and when it could effectively be applied in underground mines. The paper will describe the process by which the project was initiated, the demonstration projects established to capture data, the means to interpret the data and the modelling developed to calibrate and predict ventilation system requirements.
