"The annual budget for the repair and maintenance of equipment at Syncrude Canada Ltd. is in excess of $450 million. Of this amount, a significant portion can be attributed to the loss of material on various pieces of equipment throughout the operation. In order to effectively battle the different wear and corrosion mechanisms that lead to material loss, it is important to understand how materials behave in the environments in which they are used. Through the work carried out at Syncrude, and work conducted with various external collaborators, significant improvements in both equipment reliability and productivity have been achieved. This paper will review some recent field trials where materials research has demonstrated the potential for significant improvements in equipment run life and reduced maintenance costs. These field trials will demonstrate the need for understanding the interaction between various damage mechanisms and the materials used in different services. The paper will also discuss current areas of focus along with future directions for further work. IntroductionSyncrude Canada Ltd, located in northern Alberta, Canada, operates a mining, extraction, and upgrading facility that removes bitumen from oil sand to produce synthetic crude oil. Oil sand is mined from the orebody using conventional open pit mining techniques. Recently, the mining scheme has changed from a dragline/bucketwheel/conveyor system to a shovel/truck/crusher/hydrotransport operation as depicted in Figure 1. Since the start of production in 1978, the identification, development and application of wear protection has been an ongoing challenge due to the abrasive nature of the oil sands and the massive volumes of materials that are moved. The use of various materials and application processes along with component design modifications has resulted in significant improvements in both productivity and reliability (Adamic et al., 1995; Llewellyn, 1996, 1997; Anderson et al., 1998; Chiovelli et al., 1998).In an effort to continuously improve the operation, Syncrude has been quick to adopt new wear technologies. As seen in Figure 2, since the start of operation, a variety of materials have been used to increase wear performance and ultimately equipment reliability and availability. Although Figure 2 does not show a time axis, the bottom axis may also be used to represent a time progression for the predominate use of these materials at Syncrude. Tungsten carbide metal matrix composite (WC-MMC) overlays are currently the materials of choice for most of Syncrude’s critical production applications. Metal matrix composite overlay technology has potential for significant improvements and Syncrude is actively working with powder consumable manufacturers to advance this technology."

"Gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on pyrite at ambient temperature from colloidal solutions prepared by reduction of hydrogen tetrachloroaurate or silver nitrate by sodium sulfide or sodium tetrahydridoborate. The nanoparticles were characterized using Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and the experimental spectra were fitted using Mie - Gans modeling. The modified pyrite was investigated using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Electrodes were prepared from both natural and modified pyrite samples and were modeled using an equivalent circuit (EC) based on the EIS data. The comparison of the results revealed a decrease in charge transfer resistance for the ferric ferrous redox couple associated with the modified pyrite. From this behavior it is concluded that the electronic transport between the nanoparticles and the electrode surface over distances in nanometer scale is enhanced. Nanoparticles below a certain size act as quantum dots due to electronic confmement. Decreased charged transfer resistance at the nanometer scale may be caused by electron transport through tunneling mechanism via quantum dots.IntroductionIn recent years, considerable attention has been focused on the synthesis and study of Metal nanoparticles due to their potential applications in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, material science and their interdisciplinary fields[!]. When material is nano-sized, the physical properties deviate markedly from those of bulk material, however, this effect is highly dependent on the particle size, interparticle distance, and morphology of the nanoparticles [2].An extremely small region of space defmed in a semiconductor material in order of nanometers is called a quantum dot, a term coined by Reed [3]. The three dimensional confinement of quantum dots can change properties of the excitons in comparison to free excitons in a bulk material [4]. Nanoparticles behave electronically as zero-dimensional (restricted in all three dimensions) quantum dots when the de Broglie wavelength of the valence electrons and the particle are in the same size range.As Reed [3] explains electrons confined in a plane have no freedom to move the third dimension. Those confined in a quantum wire are only free to move in one dimension, and those confined in a quantum dot are not free in to move in any dimension. An electron inside a cube of material IO nm on a side is confined to a point."

Although the Pressure Acid Leaching (PAL) of nickel laterites has been conducted at Moa Bay, Cuba, since the early 1960s, the commissioning delays generally encountered by the æsecond generationÆ of PAL lateritic nickel producers in the late 1990s have demonstrated the potential complexity of the PAL process and the importance of technical risk management in maximising the realised project value. This paper describes some of the strategies used by the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) to manage the technical aspects of the Ravensthorpe project risk. Central to these strategies is the use of Front End Loading (FEL) to deal with issues early in the development phase, when changes to the project structure can be made most effectively and cheaply. Such an approach requires a management philosophy that recognises risk as a potential cost, which accepts responsibility for dealing with risk, and which is prepared to provide adequate resources for risk management.

Although several studies in combining and bifurcating flows in two-way junctions and splits are reported, deviations persist in the estimated shock loss coefficients (SLCs). Due to their complex nature, more work has to be done to be able to correctly predict flow losses at these locations. In two-way splits, the flow at bifurcation is known to be characterized mainly by two recirculating zones in the downstream branches, whereas, in a junction one recirculating zone is observed immediately downstream of the main branch. The relative flow rate in the branches (quantity ratios) is treated as the only parameter defining the losses at these locations. However, the effect of wall roughness, if any, on SLCs becomes important for mine ventilation. This paper presents the critical determinants of shock losses at splits and junctions at varying quantity ratios. The flow at 90º split and junction was examined both experimentally and numerically for Reynolds number in the range of 1.0×104 to 1.6×105. With a well designed laboratory setup, using precision instruments, velocity and pressure measurements were carried out, by using two scales of wall roughness. 3D numerical simulations for these experiments were conducted by using ANSYS CFX modeling tool. CFD simulations yielded results that are reasonably close to experiments, providing high degree of satisfaction in numerically predicting losses across the splits and junctions. However, comparisons of these numerical simulation results with existing literature standards showed significant under-estimation of shock losses by the standard literature by as much as 50%. A clear rise in the magnitude of shock losses was noted in both the approaches, with increased wall roughness. Based on the current studies, predictor equations incorporating quantity ratios are developed for accurate estimation of shock losses. Further investigations on roughness are needed, before one is able to incorporate wall roughness into the prediction of SLC.

LaModel is a boundary-element program capable of calculating the displacements and stresses in thin bedded deposits such as coal, salt, or potash. Throughout its history, it has continually been upgraded in order to expand analysis detail and stay current with the latest advances in computer technology. The most recent enhancements include: an increased grid size capability, a significant increase in the speed of the automatic grid generation using an AutoCAD visual interface, implementation of subsidence-based horizontal strain calculations for multiple-seam situations, and pillar safety factor calculations. To demonstrate these new features, a multiple-seam case study of a longwall panel undermining an active set of main entries is presented.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

A collaborative research project is undertaken by Anglo American Coal and CSIRO to develop appropriate strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management of longer panels. Extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling studies have been conducted and calibrated using operational longwall goaf gas data to obtain a fundamental understanding of goaf gas flow patterns in longwall panels of 1.0-km and 3.0-km lengths and a detailed investigation of the effect of various mining and operational parameters on goaf gas flow patterns. The modelling studies have also been used to investigate the performance of various gas drainage and proactive inertisation strategies during various stages of longwall panel extraction. Simulation results indicated that apart from tailgate (TG) side goaf holes, gas drainage from maingate (MG) goaf holes and the mid panel start-up goaf holes would be useful for flat seam field conditions. Operation of 8–10 goaf holes is recommended for field site conditions with high goaf gas emissions of 6000 L/s. The modelling results indicated that the traditional inert gas flow rate of 500 L/s currently used in some mines would be insufficient to achieve effective goaf inertisation in long panels. Results indicate that 3.0- km-long panels would require 1500 L/s of inert gas and there is a need for multi-point inert gas injection strategy for effective goaf inertisation. In this paper, details and results of modelling investigations and recommended strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management in 1.0-km- and 3.0-km-long panels are presented.

FOR many years the disk-type and cloth-covered drum filters have found widest application in liquid-solids separation, which uses continuous filters. The disk type is less expensive, occupies less floor space per square foot of filtration area, and requires negligible down time for filter media changing. However, because filter cloth is billowed out by the blowback in the cake discharge, it is very short-lived if the scraper blades are set too close. Consequently cake weight is very important in assisting cake discharge, which normally necessitates a minimum cake thickness of 3/8 to ½ in. Also, the vertical position of the disks eliminates the possibility of efficient cake washing for removal of soluble values. The disk-type filter is generally limited, therefore, to applications that require no cake washing and form relatively thick cakes within the normal range of filter cycle times. The conventional cloth-covered drum filter is a more flexible unit, permitting wider variation in the percentage of cycle time devoted to cake formation, dewatering, or washing, as required by the application. Thinner filter cakes can be discharged because a horizontal line across the filter medium at the location of the scraper blade is equidistant from the edge of the blade at all points. The scraper blade therefore may be set a short distance from the filter medium or, where wire winding is not used, a floating scraper can be utilized so that the contour of the cloth can be followed. The drum filter is generally employed when there are difficult filtering slurries with resultant thin cakes or when cake washing to recover soluble values must be practiced. Difficulties sometimes encountered in continuous filter operation can be summarized in the following four categories: 1) Low filtration and/or washing rates due to blinding of the filter medium. 2) Poor cake discharge resulting from sticky cakes, filter medium blinding, or too thin a cake for the particular type of filter. 3) High filter media costs caused by short life and frequent down times for cloth changing. This results from blinding or from abrasion by the scraper blade when cakes are thin. 4) Blowback of filtrate at cake discharge because not enough air passes through the cake to purge the drainage area and filtrate lines during dewatering. To reduce or eliminate blinding tendencies several modifications have been tried, for example, cover-cleaning showers, blowback under the feed slurry, and snap-blow cake discharge. In many cases, however, this simply retards the rate of blinding, since the filter medium is kept clean at its outer surface only by these methods. As blinding usually occurs within or on the back of the medium, the operator is finally forced either to remove the cloth and scrub the medium intensively with a cleaning solution or acid-rinse it on the filter—all resulting in down time, short cloth life, and additional costs.

The Nova Ni-Cu-Co Operation, located in the Fraser Range of Western Australia, commenced commercial production in July 2017 only five years after discovery. Owned by Independence Group NL (IGO), the operation has successfully ramped up over an accelerated schedule and currently deploying leading technologies. This paper begins with a description of the Nova Operation, and its journey to achieve full production in such a short time frame. It includes discussions on development and production design, selection of fixed plant infrastructure, and the features challenges of running a low-pressure primary ventilation circuit. The paper also discusses key technologies that have improved overall safety for the underground workforce, and improved operational efficiencies. Investigations continue into the implementation of further technological applications for safety and productivity enhancements. This paper also discusses the findings from a study into transitioning from a diesel to an all-electric underground mining fleet, based on a review of Nova if it were to be developed today with the current EV offerings. The study indicates compelling savings will be available to future mines when considering development design, project schedule, capital outlay and operational savings, and the ‘next Nova’ is expected to be all electric.

From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

Shallow rainfall-induced landslides in residual and colluvial hillslopes and steep embankments are a common occurrence in many settings [1, 2, 3]. While occasionally posing a threat to property and life-safety, they more often present an ongoing maintenance problem and can lead to the initiation of larger failures. Typically, these slides consist of 2 to 4-foot thick translational movements of silty and clayey soils down slope through the reduction of strength from increases in pore water pressures. Direct surficial infiltration and indirect groundwater seepage are the normative triggers for failure. In the residential community of Blackhawk, California, located east of the San Francisco Bay, these types of landslides are a common occurrence (Figure 1). However, shallow landslides have also been a repetitive and constant problem along many state highways where steep embankments have been constructed in close proximity to busy thoroughfares. Given the real threat to property values in residential and commercial settings and the constant maintenance problem posed to lifeline structures such as utilities, roadways, and pipelines, new methods to deal with these landslides are needed.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that re-entering a sealed heating poses a significant hazard, whereby the original heating is rejuvenated at an accelerated rate forcing withdrawal and re-sealing of the area. Bulk-scale laboratory experiments using a two-metre column confirm these mine site observations. A high volatile bituminous coal from New South Wales, Australia was allowed to develop a significant hot spot before being inerted with nitrogen and allowed to cool. Air was then allowed back into the coal after the nitrogen was turned off and a hot spot developed almost immediately at the same location as the original hot spot before it quickly migrated towards the air source within a day. Two more re-entries were simulated. Each successive re-entry developed a broader hot spot and took longer to reach thermal runaway. These results clearly show the behaviour that can be expected when trying to recover a section of an underground coal mine that has been sealed due to a spontaneous combustion event.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. "SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

The Coal Mining Engineering Branch of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Mineral Resources, in its continuing effort to improve coal recovery from underground coal mining operations, has undertaken a study of the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces. The strata movement was monitored by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were connected to the suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors started subsiding as soon as the face retreated past the borehole and continued to subside until the subsidence levelled off when the face retreated 900 m past the borehole. The zone of major caving and bed separation extended to roughly 10 to 13 times the extracted seam thickness and high tensile strains developed inthis zone. The bulking factor of broken strata was less than 1.14 which indicated that the roof layers collapsed in big blocks. The goaf compaction was almost complete when the face retreat was 200 m. Low tensile strains prevailed in the strata overlying the zone of caving and bed separation.

"Xstrata Alloys – Eland Platinum concentrator (South Africa) has recently been commissioned and is now initiating a challenging optimisation program encompassing the entire operation. Process control improvements are key elements of the program and initial results have demonstrated how leveraging from current assets can bring significant improvements through overall reduction of variability. This paper gives a brief overview of the operations and details how Eland is striving to become a top tier leader with advanced regulatory control strategies recently implemented. Results reveal that what can be achieved in a standard control system (PLC or DCS) should not be underestimated as the first interventions led to a steadier operation of the primary ball mill circuit. Following the improvements, significant and sustained reductions of standard variation were observed for key process variables around their set-point: primary ball mill feed rate (72 %), rougher feed density (58 %), and rougher feed flow rate (47 %). A path forward has been identified to tackle further opportunities around the primary grinding circuit: water balance management, throughput optimisation as well as charge and power draw control.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous approaches to mineral processing plant optimisation. As the benefits of determining the right reagent types, mix, dosage and addition points, or the proper charge of grinding media in a mill are fully appreciated, there is still nowadays some misunderstanding and misconceptions about process control in general and how it can contribute to the whole optimisation process. The confusion between the various disciplines involved, i.e. instrumentation, control system programming, automation and process control, certainly does not serve the best interest of the industry with this regard."
