To reduce fuel consumption in industrial and commercial fuel-burning plants throughout the Nation, cooperative efforts of thousands of individuals are required. These individuals are scattered over the country and hold various positions in thousands of independent establishments. To accomplish as much as possible on this problem during the Second World War, it was decided that personal contact with fuel users was absolutely necessary; publicity, although an important factor, could not by itself give satisfactory and needed results. It was planned to have qualified engineers visit commercial establishments to go over with them the problem of reducing their fuel consumption. The specific plan, toward which all efforts aimed and around which the rest of the program revolved, consisted in brief of 1. Conference of visiting engineer with management to obtain cooperation. 2. Appointment by management of a plant employee as fuel "waste chaser." 3. Work of engineer with "waste chaser" and, if appropriate, with plant operators on most efficient operation of equipment.

Factors governing the dissolution of nickel and iron in pentlandite and pyrrhotite concentrates from Mt. Windarra were studied for aqueous solutions at normal temperatures and pressures. The effects of dissolved dioxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen ions, and chloride ions are described. The direct reaction of aerated water wiili pyrrhotite is much faster than with pentlandite, and reaction rates are proportional to the dissolved dioxygen concentration. In both cases divalent metal sulphates are produced initially. The subsequent oxidation of iron(II) to iron(III) and its oxolation produces acid solutions which rapidly attack both minerals. The presence of carbon dioxide or chloride ion has little effect on these rates.

A coal waste disposal dam failed on Buffalo Creek near Saunders, West Virginia, on February 26, 1972. This accident resulted in the loss of 125 lives, left over 4000 people homeless, and resulted in millions of dollars in damage to several downstream communities. As a result of this tragic event, major changes occurred in the mine waste disposal practices used by the U.S. coal industry. This paper summarizes changes in U.S. coal-waste disposal practices in the nearly 35 years since the Buffalo Creek dam failure and identifies safety issues that need to be addressed for continued improvement. While many organizations and individuals have played roles in the improvements that have occurred, this paper focuses on the role played by MSHA and its predecessor agencies.

Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

On the basis of the Law on Financing Hard Coal Mining dated 28 December 2007, the subsidized German hard coal mining industry will be shut down to the end of the year 2018 in a socially acceptable manner; in 2012 this decision will be reassessed. Even after the abandonment of all mining activities subsequent burdens are inevitable. In this paper, the possible long-term effects resulting from a mining industry history, which is spanning more than 200 years, and their possible consequences are pointed out, in particular in connection with the abandonment of mine water drainage measures which is economically meaningful in the long term. According to the decision situation as it presents itself today, this point in time will be far beyond 2018. In preparation for this, an action framework is to be developed in areas possibly affected.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

"Abstract Results obtained from in-situ load tests carried out on drilled displacement piles sunk in a porous, lateritic and unsaturated soil deposit, are analyzed in this paper. Three slow-maintained load tests were performed on deep instrumented piles with a diameter of 0.37 m and around 12 m long. The soil deposit consists of a superficial, silty clay “porous” layer 6 m thick, with an average standard penetration blow count (NSPT) of 4 and cone tip resistance and sleeve friction (qc and fs) of 1.5 MPa and 48 kPa, respectively. Under this layer there is a residual stratum 10 m thick, geotechnically consisting of a “porous” clayey silt with an average NSPT of 7 and qc and fs of 2.4 MPa and 202 kPa, respectively. The water table was reached at a depth of 17 m below ground level. The results of the field load tests yielded a maximum pile load (average for the tests) of 1428 kN, which is twice as high as corresponding experimental values from standard bored piles with similar geometric conditions. Exhumation of one of the tested piles was carried out after the test, in order to check integrity and shaft conditions. Numerical finite element analyses, using the commercially available French Code LCPC Cesar®, were performed in order to back-analyze the geotechnical soil parameters for a post execution pile condition. The results permitted a better understanding of the improvement of the subsoil given the intrinsic execution characteristics of this particular pile. It was also possible to note that drilled displacement piles have great potential to become an economically viable solution in tropical soils, given the enhanced behavior of such piles when compared to alternative (cheaper) techniques. In fact, it has several advantages which should make it a key foundation type in the Brazilian market in the future.IntroductionMost buildings in tropical soils use, as the main type of foundation, deep bored or auger type piles. These types of foundations can be performed in various ways, for example with or without soil extraction, with or without bentonite mud and so on. Two main processes maybe formulated: the first execution process is typified by bored pile types, continuous flight auger piles etc., which do not cause excessive soil displacement during excavation. With respect to the second process, one could mention, amongst others, driven piles (precast concrete or steel), Franki piles and drilled displacement piles, which do displace the soil during excavation by pushing the soil laterally around the hole in order to allow either the penetration of the pile or the excavator auger."

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. A 16 m by 4.7 m by 24.5 m (52 ft by 15.5 ft by 80.5 ft) underground ore bin was constructed at an 810 m (2660 ft) overburden depth in poor quality, faulted and altered intrusive rocks at Molycorp's block caving molybdenum mine. Geological engineering incorporated detailed structural mapping, rock quality classification, in-situ stress field determinations, numerical stress and failure analysis, and convergence monitoring. The ore bin was mined by conventional methods from the top down and utilized a bored raise for mucking. The initial ground support of rock bolts, lightweight steel sets, and reinforced concrete was later supplemented with an array of 6, 12 and 21 m tensioned, grouted rock bolts when wall closure was noted in the upper ore bin area. The supplementary support was optimized by computer analysis and monitoring.

Vale is in the early stages of commissioning its Onça Puma nickel operations. The project is meant for the production of 58,000 tpa of nickel contained in ferro-nickel, substantially contributing to the company?s vision to achieve world leadership in the nickel business. Mineral resources will be exploited from the homonymous deposits in the Midwest of state of Para, Brazil ? some 100 km southwestwards from the company?s Carajás iron ore properties. Resources as of 83 Mt at 1.73 % Ni will sustain a mine life of approximately 40 years. The property was acquired in late 2005 and Vale has since extended the engineering studies and proceeded with the implementation. Nickel will be mined from saprolitic ore at a rate of approximately 10 Mtpa (ore plus waste) in early years ? ramping up to some 15 Mtpa 7 years later ?, to feed the plant at a rate of 2.5 Mtpa. The process uses conventional RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) pyrometalurgical route whereby the ore is homogenized, calcined in rotary kilns, melted in electric furnaces and further refined to ferro-nickel. The plant has been designed and constructed applying the latest available technology, aligned with Vale?s vison to exceed the highest existing standards for environmental control, health and safety and productivity in the industry. Total investments in these operations are anticipated to correspond to USD 2.3 Bi and will materially contribute to the regional development and well being of the nearby communities and other stakeholders.

Experimental results are presented that test the hypothesis that the descaling behaviour of stainless steel slabs following reheating is controlled by interfacial roughening at the scale-steel interface. In this investigation, two stainless steels were considered: type 304 (austenitic, with 18% Cr and 8% Ni) and type 412 (ferritic/martensitic, with 11.6% Cr). It was found that the entanglement that arises at the scale-steel interface was in fact effective in maintaining scale-steel adhesion, under the mechanical descaling conditions used. In the case of type 304, descaling proceeded by fracture along chromite layers, which formed (by internal oxidation) on the austenite grain boundaries; for this steel, the extent of descaling depends most strongly on austenite grain structure, and not primarily on the conditions in the reheating furnace. In contrast, type 412 samples descaled only at the edge of the entangled zone, and showed a greater sensitivity to the reheating conditions; specifically, higher free oxygen in the reheating gas and longer reheating times were found to increase the residual scale thickness. Experimental investigations were made into the decoppering of lead, tin, and bismuth using a technique which approximates on the small scale to industrial practice.Decoppering lead with sulphur alone in the absence of tin and silver did not proceed to low copper values. With a minimum of 0·02 per cent Ag or 0·10 per cent Sn, lead was decoppered to less than 0·01 per cent Cuby stirring with 0·2 per cent S over 10 min. Decoppering of tin or bismuth proceeded rapidly to very low levels in the absence of any "catalytic" impurities, at any rate in excess of those concentrations normally encountered in commercially pure tin or bismuth.

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

HISTORY of the Porcupine area has been pub-lished in detail by the Ontario Bureau. of Mines in several issues of its annual reports. An. interesting volume could be written on: this topic; especially if personalities were introduced, such as the. transaction whereby the original title to the Hollinger group of claims was settled between Ben Hollinger and Alex Gillies by the toss of a coin. The early history of the McIntyre mine also had its thrilling events, such as its manager, R. J. Ennis, dodging the sheriff and deposit-ing red-hot gold bricks in the bank to meet his pay-roll. The occurrence of quartz veins containing low gold values was reported in 1896 by E. M. Burwash and again in 1899 by W. A. Parks. The first application for a mining claim appears to have been applied for on Dec. 30, 1906, by W. 0. Taylor, of Toronto, one of the old employees of the Hudson Bay Co. On the recom-mendation of Mr. Taylor, early prospecting was done on the shores of Porcupine Lake. It. was not until the spectacular discovery of the surface croppings at the Dome mine, by J. S. Wilson in 1909, that a rush to the district took place. Exploration was carried on during 1910 and 1911. The big boom was on in 1911, when claims sold on the evidence of mere rock croppings, owing to the prevailing heavy overburden. Rock croppings with specks of gold brought big prices. The country was heavily timbered and most difficult to prospect. My first trip was made during the summer of 1911, while the railroad was under construction from Porquis Junction to South Porcupine. I published my observations in the Canadian Mining Journal, Dec. 15, 1911, discussing in particular the character of the ore deposits and the future prospects of the camp. The first mills were erected in 1911, only to be destroyed by the disastrous fire in July of that year. They were rebuilt and the first important shipments are recorded in 1912. The history of the camp from the discovery of the Dome to the present consists of alternate chapters of great optimism and those of a more non-committal nature. For the engineer unfamiliar with the character of the deposits of this area, and the north country in general, it is at times most difficult to draw conclusions and submit definite recommendations. When valuable orebodies apex at depth, with no surface showings other than slightly mineralized veins of quartz or quartz containing a little visible gold; when at depth valuable veins and ore deposits, paralleling the one being explored, are developed by cross-cutting, such as Nos. 85-58 on the Hollinger, which have been its largest producers, the engineer assumes responsibilities rarely called for in other mining districts. This fluctuating aspect is exemplified in the three large producers, and may be duplicated with some of the old producers now being explored.

This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

With access to the World Wide Web, many resources are readily available for improving claim reports. With a little time spent on line, a more thorough report can be created. Claimants will accept the conclusions of a report more readily when they can view support information on their own computer, particularly when the support information is not just from blasting related web sites. Some suggested resources are discussed including aerial pictures, local tax maps, topographical maps and home repair web sites. This paper provides suggestions for tracking down support information on the web and information on how to properly reference this information. Case studies of several claim investigations are presented. These are some examples of how a little time spent online provided clear and convincing evidence to support the conclusions of the investigation.

Tables based on 1985 data, which were not available in time for publication of the "1985 Minerals Yearbook," are included in this chapter; corresponding tables for 1986 are not yet available. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1986 had an estimated value of $23.5 billion, an increase of $0.25 billion over the 1985 value. This is the fourth consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a de- crease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 14 out of 15 years. Industrial minerals growth slowed from a 3% increase in value in 1985 to a 1.5% increase in 1986, reflecting the slow growth in the domestic economy. The value of industrial minerals, more than three times larger than the value of metals, easily offset the less than 0.5% decline in the value of metal mine production. Although the decline was small, this decrease makes 1986 the fourth year in the past 6 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States. U.S. production continued to lag behind the growing world production. Overall, the estimated raw nonfuel mineral production rose 1% over that of 1985. Domestic mine production of ferrous metals declined as follows, in decreasing order of production: nickel, iron ore, tungsten, and molybdenum. All remaining domestic primary nickel and tungsten mines had closed down by yearend. Nonferrous metals that similarly declined included titanium, rare-earth metals, lead, silver, zinc, and magnesium. For the second consecutive year, aluminum, produced predominantly from imported bauxite, declined in production, while imports reached record-high levels. Somewhat modest gains were made in beryllium and copper. As has been the case for a number of years, gold was a bright spot in the domestic and internation-al metal mining industry. Gold production was spurred on by the increasing usage and development of heapleaching techniques that make lower grade ores, which were previously uneconomical, profitable. Additionally, various mining companies, the U.S. Mint, individual States, and a number of foreign countries began production of gold bullion and commemorative coins. Gold output in the United States increased from 2.43 million troy ounces (revised) in 1985 to about 3.73 million troy ounces in 1986, a dramatic 54% rise.

Auger operations produced 14 million tons of coal in 1974, or approximately 5% of all surface mined coal. It was the most efficient of all coal mining methods, producing 40.0 tons per man-day. However, compared to other methods, the coal recovery rate is relatively low. For example, a triple-headed auger in a 35-inch seam would recover approximately 50% of the coal in the seam as compared to a 90 to 95% recovery rate for strip mining and a 55 to 65% recovery rate for deep-mining. The low auger recovery rate is due to the circular cuts and pillars left in the seam.
