Christmas morning 2020, an IED in an RV was detonated along an evacuated section of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The blast damaged over 40 buildings, including AT&T’s Main Central Office and caused internet and cell outages across 1,200 zip codes for three days including the airport and EMS services. Published investigations by the ATF and FBI were inconclusive in determining the explosive composition and size. Video captured a large fireball that may indicate a fuel-air-mixture explosion which would create lower peak pressures than high explosives, but longer pressure duration and significant impulsive loading. Blast pressures were amplified by reflections in the urban environment bordered by the 8-story AT&T building and a row of multi-story historic buildings. Some structures had little damage as they were shielded from the blast pressure by closer buildings, and seemingly far-field structures contained damage from the pressure wave after multiple reflections and propagation through porous parking garages. Damage to the reinforced concrete frame AT&T building included snapped masonry ties, cracking and spall to the closest column, and vertical displacement of the elevator, even with the brakes applied. The historic structures directly across the street from the blast partially collapsed. Initial damage included complete failures of unreinforced masonry façades, broken timber beams, and uplifted roofs. Secondary, progressive collapse took place over months as the brick walls and weakened historic mortar could not resist typical wind and environment loads. One of the close historic structures was renovated in the 1990’s and structural retrofits to comply with building codes were required. The addition of steel columns and façade tie-ins improved survivability and it remained standing with a high percentage of the front brick intact. Generally, the observed blast damage was related to a structural component’s mass and flexibility. Internal timber framing was unscathed, but many steel studs required replacement. Glazing damage was observed several blocks away and many roof membranes were punctured by falling debris. Secondary damage from broken sprinkler lines and loss of environmental control often led to more costly repairs than the initial blast pressure damage. The proliferation of bomb-making knowledge leads to hundreds of bombings each year in the US. Building risk considerations should include explosive threats along with other hazards. ASCE structural standards and design manuals have been published to address these risks and may be useful guides for building construction.

Abstract - Quartz veins at the Mufferaw gold prospect and Komis gold deposit, northern Saskatchewan, are examples of oblique-extension veins that crystallized in shear and tensile fractures, which propagated and then opened oblique to their walls during a single continuous deformation event. The Mufferaw gold prospect consists of an interlinked mesh of conjugate shear fractures, tensile fractures, and veins. Oblique-extension veins crystallized in conjugate shear fractures, which opened during dilation of intersecting tensile fractures under the same far-field stress system. At the Komis gold mine, tensile and dextral shear fractures cut across granodiorite dikes. The tensile fractures formed perpendicular to the dike margins during stress transfer from the less-competent country rocks to the more-competent dikes. During extension of the dikes oblique to the bulk extension direction in the country rocks, the tensile fractures were reactivated as sinistral shear fractures. The reactivated tensile fractures and dextral shear fractures opened oblique to their walls, parallel to the bulk extension direction, and were sealed by the deposition of oblique-extension veins during the same deformation event.

The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

The increase in metals demand in the electrifying globe means significant growth in the smelting of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead, produced from primary sulfide sources or using sulfide mattes as the intermediates of the process chains. This means that leaner and complex mineral deposits will be evaluated as ores and are in the future traded in the commodity market for smelting and refining to pure metals. An important issue in the trend is the technology metals, like antimony, tellurium, and gallium, which exist as trace elements in sulfide ores and form no ores of their own. Their recovery becomes important in the coming decades as will be the case with growing slag amounts without use in other industries. The key is to produce environmentally acceptable slags in the smelting operations. It sets new boundary conditions to the treatment of flue dusts. This means that all material streams of smelting and refining must be re-evaluated for the deportments of the main and minority metals. In copper smelting, the recoveries of precious metals are today important for the feasibility of the custom smelters but due to low prices of many minority metals they are discarded in slag landfills. It is one of the emerging issues also in the secondary copper smelting today and once the demand grows, the same question will be faced also in the mining-beneficiation-smelting-refining chain of the primary production of nickel, zinc, and lead. The distributions of many technology metals in the copper and nickel smelting have been recently studied using methods where the chemically bound trace elements in the slag and its phases at the smelting conditions have been studied. Thus, the key data about options for process modifications and additional processing steps are piling up. Short processing routes in the metals smelting and refining are attractive due to their simplicity. At the same time, complexity of many raw materials challenges the fluxing at high oxygen partial pressures in low silica slags with high metal concentrations. The compromise between high primary recovery and safe operation is a demanding task in conditions where slag foaming outside the processing window is evident. The increase in the demand of pure nickel is challenging the raw material basis where low-grade sulfide ores are soon smelted along with nickel laterites to matte. It is a demanding task at high MgO concentrations. The low solubility of MgO in iron silicate slags requires new fluxing strategies and new smelting end points for the operation at reasonable temperatures; the direct nickel matte smelting in one-matte mode may be an option.

Summary During the last three years the discovery of gold in the belt of volcanic and sedimentary rocks extending eastward from the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake gold-fields has caused a great deal of excitement in mining circles. The area is heavily drift covered, and every aid to the location of veins is eagerly grasped. A knowledge of the physiographic history of the area is of the utmost importance in the application of many of these aids. Evidence is presented to show that glacial erosion has lowered the general elevation very little below the pre-glacial level, and that many glacial erratics have been carried less than three miles southward. Probably a knowledge of the general geology of a: region was never more necessary to the understanding of the distribution and continuation in depth of the mineral veins than in this area. Four distinct granites occur in the region, and gold-bearing veins are genetically associated with only one of these. Two types of quartz-feldspar porphyries have been found, only one of which has any bearing on the locus of the mineral veins. Many other examples of this complexity of associations might be cited, but everyone goes to show that in most cases the economic importance of the deposits can be realized only after the regional geology is understood. A series of sandstone, limestone and shale intruded by granite lies unconformably below the Keewatin lavas. The latter are intruded by a gneissoid granite and are overlain unconformably by the thick series of Timiskaming greywackes and silts. These are intruded by carbonated syenites and syenite porphyries which have since been rendered somewhat schistose.

Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

THE ultimate purpose of the Chemical Manufacturer is to produce consumer products which can be sold to customers. Such production and sales can be continued only if the operations yield a profit to the manufacturer and if the products meet the requirements o the consumer--bath parties to the transaction must be satisfied. There are vast numbers of consumer products, made by chemical pro-cesses. The production of some of these ultimate products may involve the use of several intermediate chemicals, applications of few or many different processes, and the utilization, somewhere in the series of operations, of a variety of raw materials. On the other hand, some ultimate products have a very simple chemical history between raw materials and end products. There are no chemical products in use which are completely independent of the mineral industry. For many, the association is direct and obvious; for others, it may be indirect and even obscure. Analyses of the process and raw-material ancestry of a very large number of consumer products would suggest that many products are derived from Industrial Mineral products directly, that there are many in which the connection is indirect, and that there are only a few products with which industrial minerals are not in some way or other associated. The vast majority of the more important chemical products, and especially the basic chemicals from which other products are made, are directly dependent for their production upon Industrial Minerals or their derivatives. In the preceding part of this paper, for each raw material mentioned some references have been made to the leading chemical products based on this material. This, however, is only part of the story, because in most cases the consumer product can be made from any special raw material mentioned only by the use of other materials or chemicals made from them. The production of consumer chemicals is really possible only through an intricate interlocking of processes, materials, and apparatus.

"A young private R & D organization, COREM celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009. Managed by a consortium of nine mining and metallurgical companies, COREM has the mandate of increasing the competitiveness of its member companies through the development and transfer of mineral processing innovations. Typical technologies developed by COREM include alternative mineral processing techniques, novel operating strategies, innovative sensors and process simulation software. Many of them were developed in partnership with universities and selected research organizations.Because the COREM membership base is broad (from ferrous to base, to precious metal industries), its R & D program must deliver technologies with applications within a wide spectrum of mineral processes. Comminution, physical (gravity and magnetic) separation, flotation, cyanidation, pelletizing and thermal processes are the main topics of the R & D program. A number of new technologies have been developed and transferred to the plants of member companies. These examples of transferable technologies demonstrate the capability of COREM to impact the bottom-line of its member companies.INTRODUCTIONCOREM is a private mineral-processing R & D organization that operates from its own laboratories and pilot-plant with its own staff of professionals and technicians (about 95 persons). The present-day metallurgical community is quite familiar with the use of jarosites [MFe3(S04)2(0H)6 where M = K, Na, NH4, Ag, 1/2Pb, etc.] as a means of controlling iron, alkalis and sulphate in hydrometallurgical circuits. This modern precipitation technology has found an increasingly widespread application in the zinc industry111 and is gradually also being extended into the hydrometallurgical processing of copper and cobalt121 . The chief advantage of jarosite precipitation is that the iron precipitate settles and filters well, and gives low losses of divalent metals in the washed residue. Although this jarosite precipitation technology was developed only within the past twenty years, man's involvement with jarosites extends back to antiquity, and jarosites have played an important role as a source of silver in several ancient metallurgical centres. In the early days of this century, argentojarosite was an important local source of silver at the Tintic Standard mine, Dividend, Utah, where over 200 000 oz of silver were recovered from highgrade natural jarosite over a three-month period 131 . At the Matagente mine in Peru, pockets of argentiferous plumbojarosite up to 40 m thick were mined and processed by the Indians prior to the arrival of the Spaniards14-51 . In Cyprus there are vast jarosite deposits associated with the ancient mining sitesl51 , but exploitation of these jarosites has been insignificant because of their low silver values. The most extensive mining of silver-bearing jarosite, and certainly the oldest documented instance of such jarosite exploitation, was in the vast pre-Roman workings at Rio Tinto, Spain. This mine, the greatest single miningmetallurgical site currently known from the ancient world and also the oldest site of more or less continuous metal production, has witnessed many metallurgical firsts. Aside from the initial processing of jarositic ores for their silver values, the development of large-scale hydrometallurgy also seems to have occurred at Rio Tinto. As early as 1737, copper was recovered by cementation on scrap iron from the mine waters at Rio Tintol51 . Large-scale heap leaching of calcined ore commenced with the British operations in 1876 and, by 1900, raw pyrite was heap leached to recover associated copper values161 .

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia y peligrosidad de los polvos del mineral a través de la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo en los polvos industriales, ya que el riesgo de adquirir silicosis es proporcional a la concentración de cuarzo en los polvos ambientales. Existen tres métodos para la determinación cuantitativa de cuarzo: El método químico, el de difracción de rayos X y el petrográfico. El método que presenta mejores beneficios es el de N. A. Talvitie, puesto que se basa en la propiedad del ácido fosfórico, donde se forma complejos solubles en agua con los silicatos y óxidos metálicos, quedando el cuarzo prácticamente inalterado.

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

For mining companies facing strong international competition and unfavorable commodities? prices, automation of underground operations has got a potential to increase productivity and help cut cost. However, despite considerable technological progress in this field, there still remain some problems to overcome. Furthermore, a success implementation of automation depends also on numerous operational, organizational and even human factors. In this context, this paper reviews briefly a technological progress with regard to different underground operations. Following that, several issues related to implementation of automated equipment and systems are presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the factors whose importance is sometimes underestimated. Some recommendations in this respect are also given. It is stated that a success of an automation project is a function of many ?winning conditions?, which may be created through a very thorough planning and preparation. It is also underlined that despite achievements made, a vision of a man-less underground mine is not yet a question of near future as it may seem.

As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese in the western United States, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined. and obtained samples of ore from two properties in the vicinity of Barstow, San Bernardino County, Calif. In addition to these, samples from two other properties in the same vicinity were submitted by the owners. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration by ore dressing. The Big Reef manganese claims axe about 140 miles east of Barstow, Calif. The claims were leased by W., E. Thurber of San Gabriel, Calif., from the owner, C. S. VanDoren of Daggett., Calif. Manganese oxides occur as a replacement deposit in heavily brecciated andesite along a fault plane. Four samples were taken by an examining engineer of the Bureau of Mines from the ore zone, which, when composited, were representative of all the exposed ore. Preliminary tests were made on lot B, and final tests wore made on the composite sample. The Trans-Oceanic property is about 20 miles southeast of Barstow, near Newberry, in the. Pisgah mining district, Calif. The sample, submitted by the owners, was taken from a 1,000-ton reject clump from a hand-sorting operation. The ore occurs as a replacement of rhyolite.

The materials containing copper which are refined in the United Statrs, are, for the most part, the natiye noppers of Lake Superior. IJntil quite recently but little pig copper Was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphorous ores of New England and the Sonth, and was generally sdd to reSneries not far from the ore filrnaceu. A stnall aiuoiint found its way into the'niarket which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were loolced on with stlspicion, and were not sought for. A11 the grtlGis of pig coppcr are sold by the unit of oopper contents, a great redtiction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior copper Company, and the works of C:G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works ivhich smelt sulphuroris ores and refine their pig; bo sides these t1le1-e arc a few siuall works where gig copper is refined uuly. Some of these purcIlase blscir copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but nlostly that from Lake Superior, for the purpose of getting it into swh shapes that can be handled cpmtriercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire fir electrical purposes. Up to the time of the discovery of the mines on Lake Superior, only a very small quantity of native copper had ever been foond, not sufficient to justify the erection of worlrs fbr its special treatment. It had, besides, never been found in very large maweq so that the discovery of greabblocks of it presented serious difficulties, not oolp in mining it,-I- but in bringing it into a merchantable condit'ion. In connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on utilization of Cuban lateritic ores, a comprehensive review was made of the chemical literature on nickel and cobalt. Initially, the review had as its objective the selection, from the voluminous literature dealing with the chemistry of these two metals, of only those references to reactions that were especially pertinent, or at least closely related, to the field of extractive metallurgy. Later, the coverage was extended to include references to the techniques and plant applications of extractive metallurgical procedures for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. In this report, the period from January 1929 to July 1955 has been covered, as it seemed logical that recent literature should be of greatest value. This cutoff date was established in order that the bibiliography could be issued at an early date, inasmuch as currently much work is in progress on the lateritic ores. Later, a supplement will be prepared extending the coverage to about 1900.

"A statistically designed benchmark mill survey was carried out in July 2005 at the Kidd Creek Concentrator, D Division circuit, which processes Ni/Cu ore from the Montcalm deposit. A structured statistical survey approach was followed, together with defined quality controls, which would assign a 95 percent level of confidence in the result.A set of six surveys were completed over a limited time; the corresponding stream samples of the surveys found acceptable were combined to obtain high confidence composite samples. The head grade of each survey is compared to two distributions to test its acceptability; surveys that fail to conform to these trials are rejected. The accepted set of surveys, which is a robust representation of the process, is prepared into a composite for QEM-SEM analysis and mass balance purposes.Where the above practice is a standard procedure in Falconbridge for QEM*SEM purposes, in this case each individual two-hour survey unit was measured and analysed for a mass and value balance. It is shown that none of the individual mass and value balances close as well as the composite set of accepted two-hour survey units. This founding is in keeping with the averaging properties of the Central Limit Theorem.INTRODUCTIONMontcalm OperationsNi/Cu bearing ore from the Montcalm deposit is being processed at the Falconbridge, Kidd Creek Concentrator in a modified D Division circuit. The circuit was commissioned in the fall of 2004. Ore is crushed at the minesite to –19 mm and trucked to Kidd for delivey into the 4 parallel fine ore bins.Ore is milled in a rod mill followed by cyclones and 2 parallel ball mills. The grinding circuit treats Montcalm ore at an average feed rate of 100 wet tonnes/hour (750,000 tonnes/annum) and produces a flotation feed particle size of 83% -53 um. A simple flowsheet including bulk Cu/Ni roughing and 2 bulk cleaning stages followed by Cu/Ni separation in 2 stages is practiced. Soda ash is used as a pH modifier in bulk flotation. SIBX is the collector. Lime and Dextrin are added into Cu/Ni separation for the depression of pentlandite."

THIS PUELICATION lists and provides brief accounts of the major disasters not classified as explosions of gas or dust that have occurred in the cod mines of the United States from the earliest times to the present. Together with an earlier publication of the Bureau2 it provides information on all the known major coal-he disasters (disasters causing five or more deaths) in this Nation's history. Sources of each account are given individually. In each account the actual words of the original publication are used unchanged, but sentences or paragraphs referring to details that are not significant have been omitted. In those few cases where conflicting data were reported in different publications the selected version is the one that appears most logical and which in general is in agreement with most of the other accounts.

"The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. Expert Online, as a software system, is aimed at providing plant operators in the minerals industry with effective training and on-the-job assistance. It incorporates a number of features to achieve this goal, of which the most important is its ability to explain the dynamics of the plant and control system in simple language, mimicking an informed plant expert who has online access to the inner workings of the plant and control system. This is made possible by a novel form of Artificial Intelligence, called the Interpreting Expert System. Previous implementations of the IES were only capable of explaining controller actions. Expert Online will extend this capability to also perform the more difficult task of explaining process behaviour. Expert Online will implement three main processes, namely the accumulation of data from the controllers and plant models, the interpretation, processing and filtering of that data and lastly communicating the relevant information to the user, both as written messages and in other audio-visual forms. Although Expert Online is aimed at the operator, other plant personnel, like supervisors and plant managers, will also benefit from it. This paper focuses on the structural and functional design of Expert Online for implementation on the latest version of Mintek’s open control platform, PlantStar, highlighting advances and additions since the previous implementations of the Interpreting Expert System and concluding with an example illustrating some of the principles.
