The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

Recent advances in cloud computing and database technology developed for the Internet of Things offer a different way of working with these critical data sets. Enabling a cloud based, open data structure with high performance data analytics capability presents a compelling improvement in governance and a democratization of ore body knowledge that can lead to automation use cases that support the digitalization of mining.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.

Characterization and beneficiation of dry iron ore processing plant reject fines of Khondbond region, India, was investigated. Different characterization techniques viz. size analysis, size-wise chemical and density analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, sinkfloat analysis, thermo gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and QEMSCAN were carried out. Based on characterization results, two process flow sheets comprising wet screening followed by conventional gravity concentration and two stage classification with different beneficiation routes were used to recover the iron values from reject fines containing 58.73% Fe, 5.54% Al2O3, and 6.6% SiO2. Finally, suggested flow sheet comprising of two stage classification and advance gravity concentration followed by the combination of grinding, classification, and froth flotation produced iron concentrate of 2.36% Al2O3 with 75.8% yield which can be used in sinter/pellet making.

"With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

This paper provided an overview of characteristics of limonite ores as well as their influence on sintering performance. Evaluation experiments focusing on basic characteristics, granulation characteristics, and high temperature sintering characteristics had been conducted by using two types of limonite ores, then the principles of high effective utilization technology of limonite ores were discussed, and the sintering pot tests were conducted. Limonite ores possessed low total iron content, high combined water content, high SiO2 content, large average particle size, low adhering particles proportion, high porosity, high water absorption rate, short water absorbing time, poor granulation ability, high melt formation ability, low melt fluidity ability, low melt penetration ability, high melt absorption ability, low bonding phase strength, and high forming ability of SFCA. By taking the technical measures of ore-proportioning optimization, increasing the proportion of burntlime and segmentation granulation, the usage of limonite ores could reach 50% in sintering.

Crushing and grinding The Crushing and Grinding Technical Committee There was substantial activity in the area of crushing and grinding with the improved outlook in the industry. The Crushing and Grinding Committee's theme of 1987's Annual Meeting in Denver was Fundamentals of Mechanical Design for Crushing and Grinding Mills. At the meeting, the concept of gearless sag mill variable speed drives was taken out of the closet, dusted off, and a wraparound motor was put on hard copy with the ordering of a 9.7- x 4.5-m, 8.2-MW (32- x 15-ft, 11,000-) sag mill. Additionally, comparisons were provided to the mill design of the gearless drive sag mill and the twin 4.5 MW (6000 hp) do variable speed drives placed on the drawing board for the Kennecott UCD Expansions. This involved a 10- x 4.5m, 8.9 MW (34- x 15 ft, 12,000 hp) sag mill. Differing opinions were also expressed in technical presentations pertaining to the need for quality mill specifications in design and manufacturing. J. Berney-Ficklin of Bechtel presented a paper outlining the need for quality design and manufacturing specifications in large scale grinding mills, and the overall cost reduction in capital and operating costs. Others presented differing specific views, but all emphasized a central theme. Quality and reliable designs in large mills should not be compromised. In-pit crushing applications continue to increase, overseas and in the US, in both mining and quarrying. Different in-pit crushing units have been classified as mobile, with integral transport systems; semi-mobile, typically modular systems that use separate transporters for repositioning; semi-stationary plants that must be dismantled before transporting and typically require earthwork and concrete foundation work; and stationary in-pit crushing plants, which remain in place for the life of the pit. The majority of equipment sales of conventional crushing and grinding circuits in 1987 were to gold mining operations. There have been two areas of end use: • conventional jaw/gyratory or impact crushing circuits preparing low grade ores for heap leaching; and • small scale sag/ball mill circuits preparing higher grade ores for classical cyanide leach/ recovery circuits. There was also continued interest in ABC and SABC circuits for both base and precious metals plants. High pressure roll crushers continue to attract considerable interest in the cement industry. There, they are used to prepare raw materials or clinker for subsequent ball/tube milling. However, they have apparently been less successful in the mineral industry where the energy savings/ capacity gains have been much less dramatic. Several papers covering the theory and application of these machines were presented in an industrial minerals session on cement at the SME Annual Meeting. The Third International Conference on Hydrocylones, held in England in October produced several papers of interest on classification and screening to the mining industry. In particular, a new cyclone apex, developed by Mt. Newman Mining, shows promise of reducing water flow to the cyclone underflow stream and, therefore, increased underflow pulp densities and reduced fines recycle in grinding circuits. A twin vortex hydrocyclone was also described and shown to give a sharper split than conventional units. Similar double cyclones were introduced in the 1950's, but failed to achieve widespread acceptance. This was due mainly to a proneness to blockage in the transitional zone. It will be interesting to see whether this latest variant can overcome this problem in the typical operation. A number of North American iron ore plants installed the capability to produce fluxed iron ore pellets. Most chose to grind the stone on site with circuits designed to grind taconite ore. Methods employed to grind this material included single-stage ball mills closed with fine screens, rod and ball mill circuits - both open and closed with cyclones - and semiautogenous mills, followed by ball mills closed with screens or cyclones. Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

Iron transfer from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to the electrolyte can have a major economic impact on solvent extraction (SX) operations. High iron transfer will lead to greater operational costs, due to increased reagent consumption through electrolyte bleed and make up, or increased power costs due to decreased electrowinning current efficiency. Bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfide ore from the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine was investigated in a large scale piloting program including SX and electrowinning. Plant data and lab test work conducted throughout the course of operation, show that the unique containing PLS high ferric iron with high pH can lead to lower Cu: Fe selectivity than is typically seen in traditional copper SX operations. The impact of high ferric iron on the plant operation, and methods to reduce iron transfer will be discussed. Special considerations need to be taken for plant operating conditions and selection of SX reagents (including both extractant and aromatic content of diluent) based on the feed PLS characteristics.

"INTRODUCTION The construction of the BAB 44 motorway between Kassel and Herleshausen (both Germany) is an important part of the trans-European road network. After its completion, the A 44 will permit an efficient connection of the Benelux States in the West and Poland in the East. In the section between Eschenstruth and Hessisch Lichtenau the Hirschhagen Tunnel is constructed with a length of 4.1km. Most sections of the tunnel are situated in weak ground conditions. Hence a combination of face bolts with spiles (short forepoling) or pipe umbrellas (long forepoling) additionally support the tunnel heading on a regular basis This article will focus on the application of a newly developed method to connect the pipe umbrella support, which is mostly installed by conventional drilling machines nowadays. The installation method limits the outer diameter to a maximum of 168mm and a pipe wall thickness of 12.5mm because workers must be able to handle pipes and its drill steel. Typically these pipes are connected with threads that create a weak link in the support system so during the last decade alternative connection systems were developed to overcome this disadvantage. One of these alternative coupling systems is the so called Squeezed Connection, which will be explained in this article followed by a discussion of its advantages and disadvantages regarding technical specifications, construction time, and safety issues. THE HIRSCHHAGEN HIGHWAY TUNNEL The German highway A 44 directs from Aachen through the Ruhrgebiet to Kassel (all Germany) and it is extended to Herleshausen (Germany). The new section connects the A 7 to the A 4 after completion. This upgrades the east-west highway connection starting at the Benelux Union and heading to Poland so it is an important part of the trans-European road network. The newly constructed section has a total length of approximately 63 km and comprises 13 tunnels. All tunnels are constructed as double tube tunnels with 2 lanes and emergency sidewalks on both sides and 14 emergency cross passages. The Tunnel Hirschhagen starts in the north of Eschenstruth and ends near Hessisch Lichtenau (Figure 1). The length of the northern tube is 4,147 m and that one of the southern tube is 4,204 m. So it is the longest tunnel of the A 44 and the second longest highway tunnel in Germany when it is put into operation. On its alignment it crosses underground the Losse valley with the state road 7, the streetcar Kassel-Hessisch Lichtenau and the Losse stream. The cover above crown varies from 10 m to 95m and it is the lowest when crossing the Losse stream."

The study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of a full-scale continuous centrifugal concentrator in the reconcentration of fine hematite from high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) concentrate in a tailings recovery plant, and to investigate the usefulness of the technology in industrial applications. The effect of changing the operating variables on concentrate grade and recovery was studied. The results indicate that among the variables considered in the study (water spray pressure, centrifugal acceleration, feed volume flow rate, feed percent solids and the reciprocation and spacing of water sprays), the change in centrifugal acceleration affects the recovery the most and continuous concentration can be achieved only when the water spray has a sufficient pressure. In addition, the reciprocation and spacing of the water sprays have a significant influence on the concentrate grade. Although performance of the full-scale concentrator is slightly inferior to pilot-scale trials, due to limitations in the scale-up design and the fluctuations of feed material characteristics, this concentrator provides a potential way to achieve continuous concentration and obtain a high-grade concentrate from tailings.

The Mokelumne Aqueducts Resiliency Project (MARP) involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) to replace the existing surface aqueduct pipelines with more resilient conveyance. The tunnel will be bored in Pleistocene-age alluvium at elevations between 100 to 10 feet below mean sea level. At this depth ground conditions are signicantly stiffer and denser than surcial soils and will mitigate potential seismic harards related to liquefaction ground shaking and cooding that could arise from potentially damaged levees. The heterogeneous soil deposits at tunnel depth consist of interbedded layers of stiff to very stiff clay and silt, and dense to very dense clean sand and silty sand.

Rock dust is applied in underground coal mines to prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. It is applied either dry or wet. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, but the formation of caked rock dust particles is cited as a significant concern for wet applications. We conducted a study to evaluate the effect of modifying the rock dust particle surfaces to repel water and each other by the addition of oleic acid and sodium oleate. At a sodium oleate dosage of 1 kg/t, a contact angle of 112o was measured, indicating strong surface hydrophobicity and thus the ability to repel water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies indicated a chemisorption mechanism, which is necessary for long-term stability of the surface modification. The dispersibility of the modified rock dust samples was elevated by the application of both oleic acid and sodium oleate, thereby indicating a significant reduction or elimination of the detrimental effect of caking. Tests in an explosion chamber showed an 82.8 percent reduction in the dust explosion potential relative to untreated rock test applied by the wet technique.

This paper will review the evaluation performed for the Cottonwood & Hackberry Creek Wastewater Interceptor Improvements Project to replace two separate aging and undersized interceptor sewers by either open cut construction or trenchless construction methods. A case study will be discussed for the utilization of microtunneling to avoid a deep open cut excavation within a landscaped roadway median to construct nearly a mile of new 60-inch interceptor sewer in an urban area adjacent to an environmentally sensitive riverine area, while minimizing the permitting and environmental impacts of construction, and minimizing the impacts to residents and vehicular trafc and restoration reuirements.

Hong Kong is an intensively developed region and has the highest vehicle densities in the world. In 2000 there were 6.6 million people and 580,000 vehicles using 1,890 km of road covering the 1084 km 2 territory. The high vehicle and population densities together with the difficult terrain have seen road tunnels emerge as key components both in the current and future road transportation network. Currently there are eleven operating highway tunnels in Hong Kong, seven government owned and the remaining four “build, operate and transfer” franchises, see Figure 1. The very first tunnel was the dual two Lions Rock Tunnel completed in 1967and the latest the dual 3 lane Tai Lam Tunnel opened in mid 1998. Figure 2 shows the alignment and statistics for all 11 Hong Kong tunnels. Looking ahead, Hong Kong has embarked on the study and design of the next generation of major highways and as many as a further seven tunnels are currently under feasibility study or detailed design. This seems an opportune year to produce a broad appreciation of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation practices in Hong Kong not only for the existing tunnels but the new standards and requirements for the next generation of Hong Kong tunnels. This paper provides an overview of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation of Hong Kong’s existing and planned tunnels. The paper pays particular attention to the areas where the unique conditions and requirements in Hong Kong impacts on tunnel and systems design and the solutions adopted to overcome these challenges.

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone; such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

The use of a 25.4-mm- (1-in.-) diam water-only hydro-cyclone for separating liberated 125 x 25- µm high-density particles from similar-size lower-density (2.65 g/cc quartz particles, as might be used in soil washing applications, was investigated. As expected, cyclone performance was greatly affected by changes in cyclone geometry and operating conditions. A single-stage separation recovered 75% of the magnetite (4.8 g/cc) while rejecting nearly 60% of the quartz. With ferrosilicon (7.0 g/cc) as the heavy component, the recovery improved to 85%. The use of dense medium in a single stage increased both ferrosilicon recovery and quartz rejection to approximately 90% each. In addition, computer simulations of a three-stage circuit were performed. The simulations showed that recoveries approaching 97% with quartz rejections of 95% were possible.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The Lower Concourse C Extension (LCE) 108-in Storm Sewer consists of a 2,797-foot long, 27 to 55-foot deep, 108-in I.D. storm sewer tunnel. Situated beneath active taxiways and a terminal apron at Hare International Airport (D), the tunnel diverts ows from existing storm sewers located within the footprint of a future satellite concourse. The project was delivered via Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) as part of Chicago Department of Aviation’s (CDA) ongoing O’Hare 21 Capital Program. This paper presents project details, multiple stakeholder coordination, subsurface risks and challenges, TBM performance, and impacts to existing infrastructure.

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.
