New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills and geochemistry, as well as photographs and bibliographic resources. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential and other data. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during the 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses of water samples. ArcMap includes the location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e., hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

The subject matter of this paper, "Applied Rock Mechanics?," has its genesis in a recent field trip taken by the author. A more or less standard question asked at the mines visited was "How are you using the principles of Rock Mechanics to assist you in maintaining an efficient, safe, and competitive mining operation?" The question was couched in a number of different forms, but the intent was to determine whether or not a general theory based on reason and the scientific method was applied or whether the alternatives of tradition, intuition, ?common sense', revelation, ?shotgun methods' or authoritarianism were invoked. Perhaps two responses to this query will be illustrative of the general nature of the replies. At operation XYZ an extension to the known ore body has been found. The extension is of large enough size and grade that a mining scheme using load-haul-damp techniques is envisaged. Since this represents a departure from the present mining scheme, questions have arisen regarding pillar sizes, room and entry sizes and possible support requirements. A task force has been set up to expeditiously plan for these things and write the necessary specifications and requirements. The fundamental question was posed to members of this group.

The application of digitization to operations and logistics is commonplace. From advanced data analytics to intelligent networks, digitization offers tremendous opportunities to create value, raise the efficiency of production processes, and reduce emissions. Several manufacturing industries have already implemented solutions to good effect by using digitization. Mining companies, for example, are using historical data about equipment health to predict potential failures, while aeronautics and automotive companies are using robotics and end-to-end digital twins to improve their design and production processes. Not surprisingly, first adopters of digitization in many industries have gained an edge over their competition. The cement and aggregate industry can better manage the enormous energy consumption, rising cost challenges, inefficient uses of raw material, logistic problems, emissions, and overall process complexity that are inherent in their operations by doing the same. This paper presents the results of a literature review and analysis and conveys the challenges for adaptation and implementation of digitization and artificial intelligence (AI) in the cement and aggregate production industry.

The Cripple Creek and Victor (CC&V) Gold Mine (Cresson Project) (Fig. 1) is undergoing an expansion to extend production to the year 2025. This expansion involves building a high-grade ore mill, another valley leach facility (VLF) for heap leach operations and expanding the overburden storage areas. The current operating pits are progressing downward from the oxide ore into a more sulfide and telluride-rich orebody. There is still oxide ore present in the current pits and planned pits not yet mined. There is an increased need for two recovery processes for these two different types of ore. The key component to this expansion is the high-grade ore mill, which has gravity, flotation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. The mill will be the main recovery process for the higher grade, more sulfide/telluride-rich ore. This ore type does not recover well on the heap leach pad due to its refractory nature. Geometallurgy is vital for ore characterization for the two recovery methods. Geometallurgy helps develop indices that are used to predict parameters that influence overall recovery and production, such as hardness, crushability, grindability, pH fluctuations, gravity (coarse) gold, flotability and cyanidability. Using geology and mineralogy along with other analytical data, geometallurgical models are constructed and applied to the resource block model for proper planning and extraction of the gold. Geometallurgy aims to analyze the variability in the different responses to the parameters to help reduce risk (costs) and optimize recovery (profit).

Resin-grouted bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing yielded coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) tests were conducted, of wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 m to a fully grouted encapsulation length of 1.524 m. The test findings indicate that when short encapsulation bolts are installed at high rotation speeds, their anchorage capacity is significantly reduced, leading to failure at the bolt-grout interface. Conversely, when these bolts are installed at lower rotation speeds, they exhibit greater capacity, with failure occurring at a higher anchorage load equivalent to the yield load of steel rebar. No matter what the rotational speeds were used during bolt installation in this study, the fully grouted bolts consistently experienced failure at the ultimate load of the steel rebar. Most of the tests carried out on partially grouted bolts with anchorage lengths of 0.610 - 0.914 m have shown behavior patterns like the fully grouted bolts, although exhibiting reduced stiffness. The outcomes of this research offer a profound insight into the ways in which resin-grouted bolts enhance the stability of coal mine ribs.

Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the Department of Energy as near term, and potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers, into blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally-acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Based on XRD results from the literature (Landis, 1971) that are calibrated to metamorphic facies, results from our samples correspond to pumpellyite-actinolite to lowermost greenschist facies conditions, probably

In spite of their increasing importance, few universities exhibit great depth with respect to industrial minerals courses due to the shortage of specialized faculty in a category this broad. As new ideas are formulated and technological advances are developed in the field of industrial minerals, the classroom still exists as a student's primary source of information. This opportunity to give today's students the benefit of modern developements has not been utilized to its utmost potential.

"Mining used to be a business primarily focused on the technical aspects of getting valuable ore out of the ground and extracting the minerals efficiently. Without denying the importance of these skills, a narrow focus on technical issues is no longer enough to guarantee success when it comes to exploiting rare earth element (REE) deposits. Molycorp failed to enter the global REE market in a successful manner, while none of the many REE exploration projects has turned into an active mine so far and none is expected to commence operations in the near future. Accordingly, the world of REE is far more complex compared to other commodities. This paper looks into the REE industry to identify the factors that can connect potential U.S. REE mines to the market. The ability to break free from past thinking and become future-focused is a key driver. Mining of REE is pointless without a corresponding value-adding chain, while developing a value chain without first establishing an uninterruptible source of REE is also senseless. The mining sector must be based on the REE value chain and vice versa, along with the establishment of a market channel for the REE products that come out of the mine. INTRODUCTION It has been seven years since rare earth elements became the subjects of front-page headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomised in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al, 2016c; Mancheri, 2015). The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries, such as the United States that was and is still totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand and the Chinese sovereignty of the REE-market on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016). The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly and at the moment of writing this paper are in 6-year lows, at the level of the price average before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REE-market entrants (Barakos et al, 2016b; Rollat et al, 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China impel REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Subsidence planning and control must be an integral part of mine design in order to minimize the economic impact of underground mining on the surface. Pre-calculation of surface deformations which may cause damage to surface structures must be performed and dam-age criteria must be established, if the response of structures to such movements is to be determined and the extent of damages to be assessed. In this paper the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S.), which can be used to predict accurately the vertical and horizontal parameters of surface movements due to underground mining, is discussed. The Subsidence Response Modeling Program (S.R.M.P.). which can be applied to evaluate the response of buildings to subsidence-induced movements, is also reviewed. Finally, an example is presented demonstrating the applicability of these techniques for subsidence design and control.

Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. and Gibbons and Reed Company, both of Salt Lake City, Utah, have successfully combined into two joint ventures on the San Juan-Chama project of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Azotea Tunnel is 12.7 miles in length; the inlet portal is on the Navajo River in Archileta County, Colorado, and the outlet portal is in New Mexico, about 10 miles south of the state border. The Oso Tunnel lies immediately to the north of the Azotea Tunnel and discharges water directly into it. We are presently driving both tunnels with mechanical boring machines from their portals at the Navajo River. Both tunnels are circular, fully concrete lined. The Azotea Tunnel has a finished diameter of 10 ft. 11 inches while the Oso Tunnel is 8 ft 7 inches in diameter. Both tunnels are supported with circular, structural steel rings as required by ground conditions. In good ground rock bolts and steel roof plates are used.

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. "A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

Roadheaders have become widely used in underground mining and tunneling operations because they offer the flexibility to excavate soft- to medium-strength rock formations. A critical issue in successful roadheader application is the ability to develop accurate and reliable estimates of machine production capacity and the associated bit costs. Increased pressure to improve productivity and lower costs in the mining and civil construction industries has been the driving force behind the more wide- spread use of mechanical excavation systems. This has caused both industries to move away from the conventional drill and blast methods. Additional benefits of mechanical mining include improved safety, reduced ground support requirements and fewer personnel. These advantages, coupled with recent enhancements in machine performance and reliability, have resulted in mechanical miners taking a larger share of the rock excavation market. Roadheaders are the most widely used underground partial-face excavation machines for soft- to medium- strength rocks, particularly for sedimentary rocks. They are used for development and production in soft rock mining (main haulage drifts, roadways and crosscuts), particularly in coal, industrial minerals and evaporitic rocks. In civil construction, roadheaders are used to excavate railways, roadways, and sewer and diversion tunnels in soft ground conditions. They are also used to enlarge and rehabilitate underground structures. Their ability to excavate almost any profile opening also makes them attractive to those mining and civil construction projects where various opening sizes and profiles are needed. In addition to their high mobility and versatility roadheaders are generally low capital cost systems com- pared with most other mechanical excavators. Because of higher cutting-power density due to a smaller cutting drum, roadheaders can excavate rocks harder and more abrasive than continuous miners and borers.

The entire subject area of micro-seismic events due to stored strain energy, as distinct from gas-driven coal outbursts, can be readily sub-divided into firstly events with their energy source from within the coal seam (termed “bursts”) and secondly, event with their energy source outside of the coal seam in either the overburden and/or floor strata. The reason for sub-dividing micro-seismic events in this manner is that if the causation mechanisms and associated geotechnical conditions are materially different, then effective pre-mining predictions and subsequent operational controls may also differ. Attempting to explain a multitude of micro-seismic event types without consideration of varying source mechanisms will inevitably lead to inadequate causal explanations and effective controls.

It is somewhat reassuring to note that the United States has an abundance of coal reserves which can be used to bridge the widening gap between the nation's energy production and consumption. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently established a demonstrated coal reserve base of 434 billion tons. (31)(Figure 1) As can be observed, the major percentage of the reserves is in the West. Although surface coal mining in the West has been gaining increased attention in recent years, western reserves that must be deep mined are significantly greater. Though deep mining activity in the west is very limited and accounts for less than 2% of the annual production, the primary reason, quite probably, is the greater thickness of the seams as compared to those found in the East. Forty-five billion tons of the western demonstrated coal reserve base for underground mining are in seams greater than 10 ft. in thickness. (37) Thick coal seams do not lend themselves readily to extraction with the underground mining methods practiced in the United States today. Experiences from the practices in other countries can serve only as guidelines. Consequently, a concerted effort is necessary to overcome the technical difficulties.

Future ore reserves of major gold producers in North America and elsewhere will consist of refractory gold ores. About 60 % of the current U.S. gold production is mined in Nevada. Several of the large gold operations in this state indicate that 40 to 90 % of their future ore feeds will contain refractory gold. To compound problems, average head grades for refractory U.S. gold ores have fallen from 8 - 9 g/mt to about 4 g/mt by 1991. In Latin America, 52 % of the gold operations will require milling for optimal recovery. Deeper reserves are, like in North America, refractory. Particularly in hard, (semi)refractory sulfide ores, many operations may experience substantial decreases of gold recov­ery. For example, Martins et al. (1991) report that at an Austra­lian mine, sulfide ore treatment led to 4 - 10 % lower gold reco­veries as the work index increased from 8 kWh/t to 14 kWh/t and the grind coarsened. Many refractory ores should actually be classified as semirefractory since a fine sulfide fracturing and liberation would make 80 - 90 % of the gold cyanide leachable. However, conventional comminution is often prohibitively expensive for these ore types.

Pima Mining Company has recently completed their expansion tripling the plant capacity to 18,000 tons per day and now is in the process off expanding to 30,000 tons per day with completion scheduled for the summer of 1967. This paper briefly discusses the additions to the mining department and support areas with a more detailed report on the complete new crushing plant and additions to the concentrator. The crushing plant includes a 54-inch gyratory crusher, three 7-foot standard and seven 7-foot short head crushers along with necessary screens, feeders, and conveyor belts to produce a minus 1/2-inch rod mill feed. The concentrator consists of ten milling sections, each containing one 10-foot by 16-foot rod and two 10.5-foot by 13-foot ball mills, classification is done with cyclones. Pulp from each section is floated in 50 cells of 66-inch Fagergren flotation machines to produce a rougher concentrate which is cleaned in six stages of Denver cleaners to produce a final concentrate The various mill products are thickened with disposal made in conventional manner.
