In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted by-products generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining; (2) dyke construction schedule; (3) size, shape, and location of tailings-cells; and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailings-cells designs, decreasing the mining-cells volume and increasing the number of mining-cells improve the net present value of the operation due to increased operational flexibility. The model generated a uniform schedule for ore and practical tailings-cells designs for backfilling activities. Integrating tailingscells optimization into oil sands mine planning and waste management ensures the efficient use of in-pit mined-out areas required for sustainable operations.

In the magnetite iron ore pelletization process, oxidation of magnetite followed by sintering of the oxidized magnetite (hematite) is desirable. Optimum preheating time & temperature and roasting time & temperature is required to get the desired properties of the pellets with magnetite, hematite, and hematite–magnetite blend. In order to utilize the magnetite resources in a current induration furnace, which is designed for hematite resources, detailed pelletization studies have been carried out to optimize the firing cycle for magnetite concentrate as well as magnetite with hematite concentrate. Under optimum conditions, such as preheating temperature 1000–1150 °C, preheating time 10 min, roasting temperature 1250 °C and roasting time 7.5 min, the cold compression strength (CCS) of magnetite roasted pellets was 325 kg/p, and this was due to recrystallization of secondary hematite particles, and development of the strong slag bond between primary and secondary hematite particles. The strength of hematite concentrate pellets was 260 kg/p. From laboratory studies, it was found that without disturbing the induration furnace firing cycle, which is designed for hematite ore ~5%, magnetite concentrate can be used along with hematite concentrate in pellet blend and the strength of the pellets was 270 kg/p. As the magnetite concentrate increases in the blend beyond 5%, the preheating zone residence time should be increased or a supply of extra oxygen is required. Laboratory as well as plant investigation has shown that the addition of magnetite to the hematite mix blend improved the strength of the pellets compared to hematite pellet alone.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is an important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate, or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced, the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. The asbestifom habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals may also crystallize with this unususual habit, The habit may be characterized by 1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 inn) which have gram with a common fiber axis direction but which are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions, 2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction, 3) unusual tensile strength, 4) high aspect ratio, and 5) flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties.

Top-down constructed large-diameter (up to 90 m or 300 ft) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures' response to seismic loading, assist in segment design and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly and annulus backfill grouting. The mineral sands industry is oriented primarily toward the supply of titanium (Ti) raw materials (titanium feedstocks) for the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment and titanium metal. Titanium minerals ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene, and titanium slag and synthetic rutile are all used principally as feedstocks for the production of white TiO2 pigment. It accounts for almost 90 percent of the world?s consumption of titanium minerals. The remainder is used for the production of titanium metal, fluxes for welding rods and as a metallurgical flux in iron and steel making. Titanium dioxide pigment is produced by two alternative process routes, the sulfate process or chloride process. The bulk of the world?s titanium dioxide is derived from the mineral ilmenite, which also contains iron oxide and other minor impurities. At some mining operations, the iron present in ilmenite is removed (ilmenite beneficiation) to produce a high TiO2 feedstock (slag or synthetic rutile) typically containing between 80 percent and 95 percent TiO2. Pigment producers then further process it to produce pigment.

A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.

Martin County Coal Corporation operates three underground mines and two surface mines on Wolf Creek in Martin County near Inez, Ky. The original underground development was begun in March of 1970. The property being developed is leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation. The A. T. Massey Coal Company, whose offices are located in Richmond, Virginia, is the parent company and sales agent for Martin County Coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all the production from the mines which ultimately are scheduled to produce 2,500,000 tons annually. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this huge reserve of low-sulfur steam coal. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton seams are being deep-mined now and it is in three mines that the diesel haulage equipment is used. Those of you who attended the AIME meeting in Birmingham last October or the Diesel Symposium in Pittsburgh in January of this year are familiar with the introduction of trackless diesel-powered haulage equipment into our Martin County mines. I made a presentation at each of those meetings which dealt with our first experience with Wagner Mining Equipment haulage units. These machines are sold exclusively by Lake Shore, Inc. whose offices are in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

"It has been nearly eight years since rare-earth elements (REE) became the subject of frontpage headlines. It was when the controversial Chinese export policy for these critical commodities was epitomized in a maritime border dispute with Japan in September 2010 that resulted in the big REE crisis and price spike of 2011 (Barakos et al., 2016c; Mancheri, 2015).The world was dismayed, especially in REE-importing countries such as the United States that was, and still is, totally dependent on Chinese production and exports (Barakos et al, 2016c; Kennedy, 2015). The short-lived alarm initiated a treasure hunt by way of exploration for REE deposits all over the world. The continuously growing demand on the one hand, and the Chinese sovereignty of the REEmarket on the other, led the rest of the world to explore their own REE resources. In just a few years, more than 400 projects were initiated to explore REE deposits outside of China (ERECON, 2015; Goodenough, 2016).The prices of REE, however, dropped rapidly in late 2017 and were in six-year lows, before the 2011 crisis (Barakos, 2017). The viability of even major established producers is being challenged, not to mention the development prospects of potential REEmarket entrants (Barakos et al., 2016b; Rollat et al., 2016). Production cutbacks and industry consolidation in China have impelled REE market experts to forecast that prices have already reached their lowest point and have nowhere to go but up (Adamas, 2015; Roskill 2015). Yet, expectations for increased REE prices are limited and drastic changes are unlikely to happen in the near future, as there is still excess supply in the overall REE market (Barakos, 2017). Nevertheless, the low prices of rare earths are not the only reason that potential producers are struggling to enter the global REE market. Among other parameters, the separation process of the individual elements seems to be the most important factor, as it is technically challenging and expensive to build and to operate."

Shale gas wells can sometimes drill through coal reserves. Hypothetically, the caving of the gob from longwall coal mines may deform the shale gas well casing and potentially result in a breach. NIOSH researchers studied the permeability of the surrounding ground strata that may affect the potential for an inflow of gas into an underground mine environment. An overview and comparison of measured permeability values under differing cover depths (147 m and 353 m to the Pittsburgh coal seam) and mining cycle phase will be presented and discussed in this report. The findings highlight data-driven experimental evidence that affect the interaction between gas wells extraction and mining operations that may lead to potentially hazardous environments.

Tellurium (Te), a critical mineral for solar energy technologies, faces supply risk challenges that drive the development of diversified and robust production routes. This research focused on improving Te enrichment from copper tailings (CT) produced from copper porphyry (CP) ores processing, addressing the loss of ~90% of Te minerals to tailings in the flotation process of CP ores. Gravity separation and froth flotation processes were used as possible enrichment routes of Te-bearing minerals (i.e., pyrite) in CT. In the froth flotation process, synergistic combinations of reagents were tested to achieve an acceptable enrichment ratio of Te minerals. Comprehensive characterization analyses showed significant Te enrichment in the flotation concentrates. Tellurium was recovered at 90%, while the grade of Te in the concentrates was 1.4 ppm using a xanthate collector and glycol frother compared to <0.5 ppm in the flotation feed. Findings showed that Te-minerals’ enrichment was also feasible in CT using the proposed combined concentrations routes (i.e., gravity separation followed by froth flotation) by looking at Fe, Cu, and S enrichment. This study also highlighted the importance of understanding the deportment of Te minerals in different process streams to develop and optimize efficient enrichment practices.

A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

In Novemeber of last year I visited a mica mine in Hunan Province, China. For nine months , we had been trying to sell Chinese mica to a customer in Belgium. Talking to the customer was like negotitating with a stone wall. The buyer refused to communicate any -thing other than his steadfast refusal to consider Chinese mica. He would not advise us what he wanted, what specifications or grades. He would give no indication if our price at market, or reasonable, or totally out to lunch. He would not even accept samples. It took no genius to guess that the mica buyer had at some time in the past bought a shipment of Chinese mica and had received a disaster. I invited the mica mine in Hunan in order to see for myself what could be done - without massive investment in equipment and instruments - to upgrade the quality of the mica for export. We had seen this type of customer reaction before. One disgruntled customer who had pur¬chased pigment grade barites direct from China ranted and raved about unreliable and inconsistent quality. It did no good to explain to him that China is a big country, with hundreds of mines scattered throughout many areas, each producing a different product. Our further explanation that Chinese export organizations also varied in degree and efficiency of customer service fell on deaf ears. Samples had no effect on his perception. Eventually we showed him photoraphs of two mountains of pigment grade barites. One lot was our sales of pigment barites to a major European minerals processor. Our Chinese barites stood proudly white and beautiful next to a hill of other material which now appeared at best mediocre and dull by comparison, and which the buyer had decided to reject after he received our Chinese barites. Finally the customer was sufficiently impressed to look seriously at our guaranteed specification and the outturn analysis performed by our other customer.

Design of underground openings is becoming more critical as the mine deposits become lower in grade, initial investments increase, ore depth increases, additional safety regulations come into law, and increased ore recovery is required for conservation of minerals. Stability of these openings is dependent on the strength of the rock mass and the pre-mine stress field. The rock mass is composed of solid blocks of rock (rock sub- stance) and structural features (faults, joints, bedding, etc.). Methods of testing the rock mass strength are improving and be- coming more common, however it is difficult to justify the high cost of large scale testing for an initial mine design. An alternative to testing the rock mass is to measure the rock substance and the structural features separately, and then combine them to estimate the rock mass strength. The rock mass strength will vary depending on the orientation of the opening with respect to the structural features. The other factor affecting the stability of underground open- ings is the pre-mine stress field. Methods are available to measure "directly" the pre-mine stress in competent and relatively massive rock. These methods are costly to employ, therefore, they may not be justified in an initial study. The pre-mine stress field can be estimated based on the structural relationships formed from past tectonic events.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

When Eugene Bailey asked me to contribute to this session on "Canadian exploration - 1976", it took a little coaxing before he got me to agree. My immediate reaction was, what could i say about Canadian exploration that already had not been said a hundred times in the past few years; secondly, why include a banking person in such a discussion? Everyone knows banks only come into the picture after the discovery has been made and feasibility well established and validated. Rather than wrestle with these misgivings, I decided to take the easy way out and go on blind faith in Eugene - that is, he asked me so he must think that I could come up with some useful thoughts and at least touch upon some of the pros and cons of exploration in Canada. The object of the whole exploration exercise is to Find economic deposits, once they are found, one cannot really move them elsewhere to mine them. It follows, therefore, that we should really be speaking about the pros and cons of mining In Canada and my treatise will eventually lean in this direction. In any event and before getting down to the pros and cons, let us take a quick look at the history of mineral resource development in our country since the end of world war II. At that time, we were producing well under one billion dollars worth of mineral products including hydrocarbons.

Because of frequent sudden changes in the geologic composition of strata, the extrapolation of rock properties obtained from core samples to the surrounding areas can cause problems. To address this issue, a method of rapid strength testing in situ using a borehole penetrometer is being developed. This method, as opposed to conventional laboratory testing, does not require rock samples to be retrieved and handled/machined before testing. Rock strengths are determined di¬rectly on the drill-hole wall. The latest development is a borehole penetrometer that requires only a 38.1-mm- (1.5-in.-) diam hole. The small diameter of the penetrometer body allows for the drilling of test holes with production mine equipment such as a roof bolter. The new penetrometer allows for the possibility of a broad application in coal mines, as well as in hard rock mines and tunneling. The principles of the apparatus are described and are illustrated with examples of its applications.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

Separation and identification of minerals composing the Tunisian silica sands have been conducted by acid etching and hot filtration/sedimentation (HFS) without affecting the quartz component. It was found that the hot acid etching process is an effective method to separate quartz and clay minerals in the silica sand. The SEM micrographs of the silica sand show rough surface and some cracks with irregular shapes. The surface becomes clean and smooth after acid etching process. After chemical dissolution, the clay minerals were recovered by hot filtration following by sedimentation at low temperature. FT-IR, EDS maps, and secondary electron (SE) analyses of separated clay minerals reveal the presence of Fe2O3, montmorillonite, and kaolinite minerals. The LIBS analysis of clay minerals shows the presence of Al, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg. The sequential etching process can be introduced in the purification methods as an effective way to separate quartz from clay minerals.
