Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

The two Agrico Chemical Company self unloading Phosphate Rock barges put into service in 1976 operate at over their design carrying capacity. Each barge now carries 26,000 short ton instead of the planned 25,000 short ton at 32 foot of draft. They are in service between Agrico's Tampa, Florida Terminal and the Donaldsonville, Louisiana Fertilizer Complex, moving a total of 2,500,000 short tons each year. This was the first use of the Parascrew design for a marine application. The barges, with their 3,000 STPH unloading and matching loading rate is the vital link in this total transportation and handling system. Rock is moved from the Pierce, Florida Mines through the Tampa Big Bend Terminal, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Mississippi to the Agrico Faustina Phosphoric Acid Plant 30 miles below Bacon Rouge, Louisiana. The trip from the terminal to the plant is 600 miles and the turnaround time is just about six days. Seven years operating experience has proved that the system works. Fittingly, the two barges are named the "Faustina" and the "Pierce". They have a beam of 85-feet and are 495 feet long. folded depth is 43 feet, with a ballasted light draft of 19 feet and a typical loaded draft of 32 feet. There are four separated holds with the machinery room located forward of 101 hold. Each hold is 51 feet wide at the coamings with an 18 foot straight section on the side, and a 24 foot long, 600 slope sheet for a 23 foot clear reclaim width at the bottom. The Parascrew in each of the holds is 37 feet long between the bearings and is supported on a 14 inch diameter hollow shaft. The screw pitch varies and the diameter of the flights step up from l'-9" diameter to 2'-6" diameter on the discharge end. By sloping the centerline, a minimum four inch bottom clearance is maintained across the hold. Some bending of the tube does take place.

The stress of a coal seam is an important factor that affects the permeability of the coal seam and then affects the coalbed methane (CBM) drainage. In China, adjacent coal seam mining is an important method to reduce stress, which increases the permeability of the coal seam. However, in the process of mining adjacent coal seams, many coal pillars remain, which causes stress concentrations and results in a decrease in permeability. Therefore, it is important to study the influence of coal pillars on the stress of adjacent layers and its distribution and evolution in the floor rock. This paper took the Shendong Baode Coal Mine as a case study and investigated the influence of the coal pillar on the stress and permeability of coal seam #11. The results show that under a coal pillar, the relationship between the vertical stress of different floor depths and the width of the coal pillar can be divided into a negative correlation zone, transition zone, and positive correlation zone. The change in the coal pillar width does not affect the pressure relief range or the degree of pressure relief in the adjacent coal seams below the goaf. The field measurements show that after the mining of panel #81,505, the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 under the goaf increased from 0.1434 to 26.3545 m2/( MPa2*d), increasing 182.7 times, and the drainage mixing volume of boreholes #1 and #2 increased from 1.24 to 1.52 m3/ min. While the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 from 12.5 m in the coal pillar has only increased by 2.6 times, the drainage volume of boreholes #3 and #4 did not change significantly.

This paper presents a computer program package for predicting surface movement and deformation caused by under-ground coal extractions. It is capable of: predicting final surface movement and deformation over underground openings; predicting dynamic surface movement and deformation process associated with underground lingual mining operations; processing and bookkeeping subsidence survey data; recommending subsidence parameters for those new coal mines where no subsidence data are available; and deducting subsidence parameters from collected subsidence data.

The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). Four years ago, Ashland Chemical Company introduced a new copper solvent extraction reagent for hydrometallurgical utilization. The reagent, an alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline, is called Kelex 100 ®(1). Since the time of introduction, the reagent has been investigated by several workers for its solvent extraction utility in the separation and purification of transition metals (2-7). In the following text, those factors which are essential to the optimum performance of Kelex 100 on concentrated copper solutions will be discussed. To date, the reagent has been found useful in active concentrations of from 1 to 20% Kelex 100. In order to achieve the best performance for Kelex 100, it has been found that a phase modifier is essential. Various alcohols and phenols have been evaluated in order to improve phase performance and stripping characteristics of the solvent system. Modifiers and diluents are especially important when solvent activities between 3 and 20% Kelex 100 are employed. A 15% Kelex 100 solvent, for example, containing 15% nonyl phenol in Escaid 100 (Exxon) can be utilized to remove greater than 33 grams per liter of copper from an aqueous feed without interstage neutralization, and in the same process scheme the reagent can be stripped to less than 1 gram per liter barren organic producing a pregnant electrolyte containing greater than 40 grams per liter copper and less than 120 grams per liter sulphuric acid. The unusually efficient stripping of Kelex is accomplished by protenation of the extractive molecule during the stripping process.

The continuous vacuum filtration is the solid-liquid separation process that is nowadays most frequently used in the beneficiation industry all over the world. After a development time of several decades, the various filter types such as drum filter, disk filter, plate filter and belt filter can be consideres as a sound functional design ensuring a trouble-free operation. Nevertheless, the vacuum filtration does no longer meet the present and future technological requirements. The moisture content of filter cakes is too high. Their thermal secondary drying is too expensive (coal, ores) and may bring about undesirable material changes and the filter cake conditioning with water-binding substances for dumping purposes is too costly.

"INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling is often related with special geotechnical risks. Typical causes are difficult (hydro)geological conditions, a very low overburden and the presence of critical and vulnerable (infra)structures in the influence zone of the construction (e.g. existing tunnels, roads and pavements, sewer pipes, gas and power lines, landmarked buildings, historic monuments). To manage these risks appropriately, an early detection and warning of unexpected behavior of the affected geotechnical objects ground and tunnel, as well as existing structures are mandatory. To accomplish this, the design and execution of a dense geotechnical monitoring program is of high importance. In more detail, this means specifying and performing a systematic and continuous acquisition, processing and analysis of monitoring data to support decision making. In recent years the development of new automatic sensors and (wireless) data transfer techniques and the general trend towards an automatic acquisition of monitoring data has led to an enormous increase of data production frequencies and volumes. In order to handle this data explosion efficiently, information systems and geo-databases have been developed and used successfully in many projects. They represent IT tools that support the different tasks of a given geotechnical monitoring program including data acquisition, transfer, check, processing, backup, analysis, distribution, reporting and, last but not least, alarming. Meanwhile, some tools already have developed the capability to connect to other theme-specific databases used in the project and, thus, serve as a central data management system for all kind of digital data produced. This makes possible the implementation of further useful functions and services supporting tunneling tasks such as machine control, tunnel simulation, geological prediction, process optimization, etc. where data from different engineering disciplines must be combined and processed in an integrated way. In the following chapters our aim is to describe how monitoring data management, geotechnical monitoring, alarming and reporting are organized and technically implemented at the metro project Cityringen in Copenhagen (Denmark). We want to highlight the specific role and tasks of the used tunnel information system in the project, and particularly inform on the most relevant challenges."

This paper will present the design and construction of a deep underground station of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) project; the Édouard Montpetit station. The Édouard-Monpetit station is an interchange station that will connect the deeply sitting REM tracks to the existing metro station of the same name located closer to the surface. Édouard-Montpetit station is expected to be the deepest in North America, surpassing the famous Forest Glen Station. The various challenges and solutions put forth for the successful completion of this underground work are presented to serve as a valuable example for future deep excavation performed in urban area, in the close vicinity of highly sensitive structures.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine. The gas samples are drawn via vacuum pump to the surface and are typically analyzed for oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Results of the gas analyses are displayed and recorded for further analysis. Trends in the composition of the mine atmosphere, such as increasing methane or carbon monoxide concentration, can be detected early, permitting rapid intervention that prevents problems, such as a potentially explosive atmosphere behind seals, fie or spontaneous combustion. TBS is a well-developed technology and has been used in coal mines around the world for more than 50 years. most longwall coal mines in australia deploy a TBS, usually with 30 to 40 monitoring points as part of their atmospheric monitoring. The primary uses of a TBS are detecting spontaneous combustion and maintaining sealed areas inert. The TBS might also provide mine atmosphere gas composition data after a catastrophe occurs in an underground mine, if the sampling tubes are not damaged. TBSs are not an alternative to statutory gas and ventilation airflowmonitoring by electronic sensors or people; rather, they are an option to consider in an overall mine atmosphere monitoring strategy. This paper describes the hardware, software and operation of a TBS and presents one example of typical data from a longwall coal mine.

JAMES DONALD FORRESTER 32.1-EXAMINATIONS The field examination of a mineral deposit or mining enterprise requires a comprehensive effort to determine all natural and man-made factors bearing upon the problem to be resolved by the investigation. Therefore, the purpose to be served by an examination must be fully understood before the engineer assumes responsibility, and before actual field work starts. A clear understanding facilitates planning the approach to the project for maximum efficiency and thorough acquisition of information. It follows, of course, that the engineer has the necessary knowledge and experience to discharge satisfactorily the professional obligations attending the project. Some studies are in herently more complex than others, and the requirements of the problem are not always the same. Some examinations require the detailed investigation of large operating or nonoperating mines or, possibly, of mining districts; others involve more or less reconnaissance studies; and still others rela¬tively small undeveloped mineral occurrences. Likewise, the primary objective of some analyses may be the evaluation of a mineral deposit or a mining property, whereas in other projects the major objective may be guiding mining or drilling work in the discovery of new or hidden ore bodies and mineral-bearing structures. Thus, the possible range of any given examination may extend in varying degree through one, or more, of the following types of procedures: 32.1.1--GEOGRAPHIC ENVIRONMENT Studies of geographic environment should be made to ascertain the general physical situation in the area under consideration and to identify those correlative factors hearing on the, findings resulting from the field examination. This commonly will include determinations of: A. Location of the field area with respect to the state and county in which it occurs and, if feasible, a record of the township, range and section with reference to the principal meridian, and base line (or lines) that apply. For examinations in foreign countries, or in regions outside the continental United States, it is desirable that the field locality, in each instance, be identified with reference to the boundaries of some form of political entity essentially comparable in character to the divisions used in the United States. B. Distances from existing communities and related service centers, via: 1. Roads, both improved and unimproved. 2. Railroads. 3. Navigable waterways. 4. Airports. C. Topographic relief as it will influence the selection of 1. Pit site or positions of underground mine portals or shaft sites, including dump areas. 2. Mill site, including tailings disposal area.

The flotation limit of fine particles has been re-examined based on the effect of bubble size on contact angle, and a new surface chemistry-limited relationship describing the minimum particle size which can be floated is proposed. In this analysis the critical value of bubble-solid contact radius (re) for which there is no effective attachment between particle and bubble has to be determined. The values of re determined by extrapolation of our experimental data for contact angle versus bubble-solid contact diameter permit the prediction of the flotation limit of methylated quartz particles, with fraction-al coverage of trimethylsilyl groups from 0.07 to 0.51. The limit of fine particle flotation as determined by this theoretical approach agrees well with experimental data reported in the literature.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. The first significant studies of problems related to the handling and storage of bulk solids were reported at the end of the nineteenth century. Early work originated from the necessity to store large quantities of grain and was concerned mainly with pressures affecting the structural design of silos and bins. The Janssen formula (about 1898) and the work of Ketchum [1] form the highlights of that period. In more recent years, progress in mechanization, increasing plant capacities, and rising costs of labor have focused the attention of engineers on the problem of gravity flow of bulk solids. A great deal of work has been done with models, and flow patterns obtained in small scale bins have been described in several publications, for example [2, 3]. An attempt to develop a theory of flow of bulk solids was reported in 1954 [4, 5, 61 and presented to the in a paper [7] in the same year. AIME recommended the continuation of this work and, as a result, Engineering Foundation granted a sum of money to set up a Bulk Solids Flow Laboratory. Two and a half years ago the project gained the support of the University of Utah and a laboratory was set up on the campus of the University. This project is now in progress, it has received the support of the American Iron and Steel Institute and of Kaiser Engineers, Division of Henry J. Kaiser Company. The results obtained to date are summarized in this report.

Our coal could not keep its competitive position without this progress Without it our industry could not look to the future with any degress of confidence. Today we lock back and see cases of regained and salvaged markets. We see better coal products being produced at decreasing costs. We see better utilization of manpower and a stronger, more confident industry, Our hats arc off to those mining men, equipment manufacturers, labor leaders, and others who had the foresight to work toward these ends and the ability to bring them about.

Mine development has evolved in the past 15 years from a human-paced system using hand-held drills and track-bound equipment to a mechanized system using specialized equipment for each component of the development cycle. In most Canadian hard-rock mines, face advance is achieved by the following sequential activities: drilling, explosive loading, mucking and ground support. The state-of-the-art for each work element is reviewed and methods for performance estimates proposed. The entire development system and its production capabilities are considered based on equipment reliabilities, spare units, haulage distances, and muck bay spacing. The effect of the number of working faces on the system's performance will also be analyzed. Manuscript not received in time for publication.

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.
