Preliminary recommendations for the Upper Northwest Interceptor 1&2 specified installation of reinforced concrete pipe using pipe-jacking methods. However, a larger one-pass tunnel constructed using precast segmental lining would provide additional storage volume. The risk of encountering unexpected conditions or events and the resulting cost impacts could differ significantly for these two options. A probabilistic life-cycle cost analysis of these alternatives was performed. This paper discusses the construction alternatives considered, the risk assessment methodology used to evaluate these alternatives, the input parameters and risk factors used in this analysis, and the recommended project which is currently being constructed.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. Recent advances in digital cameras and image processing allow photographers to produce excellent high-resolution action shots in low light and high contrast conditions commonly encountered underground. Digital photography is often used for construction and inspection documentation for underground structures. Designers, owners, and contractors benefit from quality photographs that document incremental progress and project milestones. Documentation photos serve as a lasting record of as-built conditions, are an important marketing tool, and help the owner build public support for expensive public works projects. When the project is complete, the only mementos that the participants will hold onto are the photographs.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM)/Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) joint venture has been engaged by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide engineering ser-vices in connection with the replacement of two existing siphons which cross New York Harbor between Staten Island and Brooklyn. The project involves the construction of a 72-inch diameter pipeline within a 12-foot diameter tunnel beneath the New York Harbor. The tunnel will be constructed using either slurry or an earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper presents the results of an extensive geotechnical field and laboratory testing program including advanced frozen soil tests (uniaxial compressive strength tests, triaxial tests, and uniaxial creep tests), in-situ vane shear and pressure meter testing, and a marine geophysical survey (seismic reflection technique) to ascertain the complex subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment and shaft locations. The paper will also discuss the design and construction aspects and the challenges associated with each component of this project.

Groundwater inflow into hard rock tunnels is strongly affected by recharge and drawdown of the water table. Previous analytical and empirical methods for estimating inflow have generally not accounted for these factors in an accurate or systematic way, resulting is wrong conclusions about inflow and the effects of the tunnel on the surrounding environment. This paper discusses these issues and provides some simple analytical equations to estimate inflow and water table drawdown around the tunnel. Examples from tunnels in the Atlanta area are provided.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

Application of a magnetic field was shown to be effective in controlling iron losses in pilot-scale cationic silica flotation in the processing of magnetic taconite concentrates. The design of a magnetic field distribution device and batch flotation test results using a 1.42m3 (50 cu. ft.) WEMCO cell are reported. Major losses of iron units in froth products were in the -25µm (500 mesh) fraction, and the application of a magnetic field decreased the flotation of fine magnetite, thereby improving the selectivity of separation. The “as received” sample was sufficiently magnetized and no further benefit was gained by magnetizing treatment. Selectivity was somewhat adversely affected by demagnetizing the sample, though its effect was minimal due to the magnetic field. The device is simple in construction, low cost and may be installed readily in existing equipment.

The ventilation measurements by tracer gas method at Pongkor gold mine show that effective diffusion coefficient, E, at straight airways indicated a similar range of measured one by the laboratory experiments which can be estimated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, E of the curved airways in the mine was estimated as larger than that of the straight ones (1.5 to 32 times than that obtained by the Taylor equation and these have been compared with the data measured in Kushiro coal mine, Japan). The curved mine airways, with small curvature against airway radius and complex velocity profile, possibly give concentration ? time curves with long tailings, thus those airway conditions could make larger E. Laboratory experiments of gas diffusion by a pulsed injection of small amount gas, into straight and curved airways, have been conducted in order to investigate a range of E in mine airways. The plots of E against Reynolds number show that the present laboratory results of straight-long airways are almost close to one calculated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, the values of E measured at curved single-direction airways were smaller than that of the straight airways, which may be due to effects by secondary vortexes flow in the curved airways.

Development of a three-dimensional mine visualization model for a section of the mine is addressed first. Discontinuity orientation and location information was taken from this visualization model for use in slope stability analyses. Estimated shear strength properties of discontinuities and mechanical properties of intact rock from the rock mass samples obtained from the mine are discussed next. The paper is then focused on the calculated maximum safe slope angles based on the performed kinematic and block theory analyses using the mapped discontinuities at the mine. Finally, the effects of water that exist in the rock mass, tension cracks, slope face inclination, overall wedge height and double benching on factor of safety of wedge stability are illustrated through limit equilibrium slope stability analyses.

Advances in tunneling technology, such as Earth Pressure Balance and Slurry Shield methods, have allowed the tunneling industry to construct tunnels in increasingly difficult ground conditions. In recent years, a number of civil projects including large diameter train tunnels, subway tunnels, water tunnels, sewer tunnels, and combined sewer tunnels have been successfully completed deep beneath the water table in soft ground conditions utilizing modern day Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). With the increase in difficult ground conditions and higher water pressure comes the inherent need to utilize compressed air to gain access to the TBM?s cutterhead and cutting tools. This paper focuses on one such instance in Los Angeles, CA in which Traylor Brothers Inc. performed a cutterhead intervention by compressing the heading of an 11-foot diameter tunnel to approximately 3 bar gauge pressure. This paper focuses on the environmental controls used to manage ventilation, oxygen levels, temperature, and pressure, as well as discusses the problems associated with toxic gases and the increased risk of fire. The paper will also cover the physical science of the environment and the increased risks of performing basic job functions while in a compressed air heading.

The 4th bore of the Caldecott Tunnel is a 50-ft horseshoe shaped highway tunnel located in the hills east of Oakland, California. Tunnel excavation was mostly completed using one of the world?s largest commercially available roadheaders, a Wirth T3.20. The geologic profile included seven different geologic units, which displayed a range of different behavior with regard to excavation and initial support. Following a brief introduction to the excavation and support methods, this paper will discuss roadheader performance in the various geologic units encountered during excavation. Comments will also be made concerning the relationship between the roadheader method of excavation and observed ground convergence during excavation.

The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.

The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991; 1994). In this study, Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline) have been selected to investigate their abilities to undergo geopolymerization. The interaction between alkali metals present in the alkali-feldspars and alkali metal cations contained in alkaline solution during geopolymerization has also been studied. It has been found that both albite and microcline can be applied in geopolymerization to produce geopolymers with a high compressive strength. Although the dissolution of M-feldspar (where M = Na and/or K) in concentrated MOH solution is inhibited when the alkali metal cations of the alkaline solution differ from the alkali metals structured in M-feldspar, the resulting geopolymers are found to demonstrate a higher compressive strength. Moreover, a proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and a higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly increase the ultimate compressive strength of the geopolymers.

Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.

Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. The gold is hosted by discrete quartz veins. While it is true that limited discoveries were made at Hemlo more than 30 years ago, and this style of mineralization is present elsewhere, recent

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

In Switzerland two major railway systems as shown below in Figure 1 has recently been completed or is under construction: ¦Lötschberg, south of Bern which was commissioned in 2007 ¦Gotthard, south of Zurich which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2016The aim is to increase the transport capacity of the railway system and to transfer more transport of goods to the railway by offering transport of trailers and lorries on the new railway systems. It will have a positive environmental impact but also improve the congested traffic situation of the highways in north-south directionThe Gotthard tunnel is totally 57 km (35 mile) long and the Lötschberg tunnel is 35 km (22 mile) long. Both tunnel systems consist of two parallel single track tunnels connected with cross tunnels at every 333 m (1 093 ft). Additionally there are cross-over tunnels and caverns for installations and operation. In the Lötschberg tunnel, the majority of the excavation has been by Drill & Blast and in Gotthard tunnel the major part is being excavated by TBM.
