The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

The Dos Pobres Mine is a copper oxide heap-leach mine located near Safford, Arizona. Mine production is 180,000 tons (163,293 tonnes) per day with a stripping ratio of 2:1. During the startup phase of the mine, the required fragmentation size was easy to achieve as the ore was highly weathered and fractured near the surface. As the mine depth increased, the proper fragmentation size became harder to achieve due to less weathering and different rock types. Because copper recovery increases as crusher product size decreases, achieving the appropriate product size at the crusher is the operating priority. The Engineering Department started a project to improve fragmentation through blasting and thus increase throughput in the crushing system. It soon became clear that input from other departments was going to be required to make this a safe and economical project. Therefore the Crush and Convey and Ore Control departments worked together to evaluate all available data on blast patterns and explosive loads and tracked performance and results. Using image analysis, Drill Energy Index and databases, we have been able to improve fragmentation size and verify the results while controlling costs.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been recognized by the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) as the most common job-related disease in the United States. Roughly 30 million workers are exposed to excessive noise levels or toxins that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR)is investigating noise controls to reduce operator overexposures caused by haul trucks used in underground metal/non-metal mines. To identify the most significant contributors to the overall sound level, Source Path Contribution (SPC) analysis was conducted. Noise dosimetry and time-motion analysis were also conducted to quantify operator noise exposure. SPC analysis determined that, under high idle conditions, a source near a hydraulic pump mounted to the rear of the engine and the engine cooling fan were the major noise sources. The time-motion/dosimetry analysis showed that the operators accumulated more than 90% of their noise exposures while they were hauling ore to the dump site and traveling back to the load site unloaded.

Many investigators measured surface forces between hydrophobic macroscopic surfaces using atomic force microscope (AFM). Some investigators observed long-range attractions and attributed them to the presence of hydrophobic forces, while others suggested that they are artifacts of the nano-bubbles and cavities associated with the hydrophobic surfaces. Still others suggested that the long-range attractions are due to the electrostatic interactions between charged patches present on opposing surfaces and hence are unrelated to surface hydrophobicity. In the present work, we have measured long-range attractions between gold- (or silver-) coated surfaces hydrophobized in potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions at pH 9.2 under controlled potential conditions. The results of our AFM force measurements are consistent with those of the contact angle and voltammetry experiments, indicating that the long-range attractions are hydrophobic forces.

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

The mining industry continues to experience a skills shortage and this is having an impact on the ability of mining companies to operate sustainably. Apart from a few exceptions, there is a dearth of geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists as well as environmental scientists and other professionals in the global mining industry. This relates to both quantity and quality. It makes good business sense for mining companies to employ local professionals rather than expensive expatriate staff. In some cases a mining company could employ more than 10 local mining engineers for the cost of one expatriate. However, in many countries local professionals are not always equipped professionally to work on mine sites. The result is that many companies are not operated optimally due to human resources gaps. In some cases, particularly in key areas such as mine planning, this threatens the sustainability of the operation or at the very least results in sub-optimal resource utilisation. This paper briefly presents some of the issues and strategies being implemented and that might be implemented to maintain a sustainable supply of quality minerals graduates to the industry in 2011 and beyond.

Mejel valley zircon ore in Iran is located in north part of Iran and was sampled to evaluate its concentration. The aim of this project was to define the mineralogy of this zone and separating zircon from other minerals using gravity concentrators and magnetic separators. It is constituted of various valuable minerals, mainly zirconium, niobium-tantalum, titanium, rare earth elements particularly cerium-bearing minerals namely zircon, sphene and rare earth elements oxides. We used statistical method for designing of experiments. Yates method used for analysis of basic experiments results. The grade of zircon in primary sample was 1.1%. Different experiments were designed to optimize all required parameters. The final concentration with 75% zircon was produced and final recovery was 79%. Finally, lab-scale based flow sheet was prepared using experiments results.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures to the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study which determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system which was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, being a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels comparing outside to inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system?s efficiency. Testing using particle count instruments performed during non-production time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated Protection Factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. The West Elk Mine is located near Somerset, Colorado approximately 70 miles southeast of Grand Junction, Colorado and 72 miles southwest of Glenwood Springs, Colorado on state highway 133 (Figure 1). The West Elk Mine was opened January 20, 1982 as the Mount Gunnison #1 Mine operated by the West Elk Coal Company, a division of ARCO Coal. In the early 1990?s ARCO changed the mine name to West Elk Mine and the operating company was renamed Mountain Coal Company. Arch Coal, Inc. purchased the West Elk Mine in 1998. West Elk Mine has produced coal from three different seams. Coal was first mined from the F Seam, the upper most seam in the stratigraphic sequence, from 1982 through 1991. Coal was produced from the B Seam, the lower most seam, starting with continuous miners in 1991 and transitioning to longwall mining in 1992and continued on through October 2008. The development of the E Seam, which is the middle seam in the stratigraphic column, started in 2004 with longwall production commencing in 2008. The ventilation conversion from exhausting to forcing for the E Seam portion of the West Elk Mine was implemented in late October 2009.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. It is an honor to present the lecture in honor of Daniel C. Jackling, the developer of the technology of copper mining that we continue to use 100 years later. He made a dramatic breakthrough in the early part of this century in the development of bulk-mining methods for large, low-grade porphyry copper-sulfide ore bodies. At Magma Copper, we are particularly proud that the Jackling Award states we have "made significant contributions to technical progress." Before Jackling's time, copper mining had exploited with primitive equipment very high-grade underground ore bodies and high-grade open pits. During the 20th century, the situation changed. Three significant innovations occurred within about 10 years around the turn of the century. In 1903, Jackling's concept of large-scale mining with steam shovels and rail haulage was implemented at the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah. Eighty years after the introduction of rail haulage, the mine converted to truck haulage with large-capacity high-efficiency haul trucks and reduced the stripping ratio from 3.5:1 to less than 1:1.

Studies have linked long-term inhalation of diesel exhaust with adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, cardiopulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Diesel exhaust levels in underground mines can approach 100 times the environmental level and are therefore monitored closely in the mining industry. Elemental carbon (EC) (a product of diesel combustion commonly referred to as ?soot?) has proven to be a good indicator of diesel exhaust levels. The current procedure for measuring EC levels involves taking personal samples from a mine worker?s breathing zone and/or stationary samples in various parts of the mine and subsequently sending these samples to a lab for analysis by NIOSH 5040 method. Unfortunately, the whole process can take up to several weeks to complete. To address the problem of waiting weeks for results, NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is developing a portable device for measuring levels of elemental carbon. This optical device takes a continuous sample of air in the surrounding environment and measures the absorbance of light passing through a filter that collects diesel exhaust particulates within the instrument. This technology can provide a near real time measurement of EC with accuracy within 10% error. The ability to take near real time measurements, combined with the instrument?s portability (currently small enough to be worn on a miner?s belt), makes this device extremely useful in the mining industry.

Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

The fall of small pieces of rock between roof bolts causes over 80 pct of the ground fall injuries in underground coal mines. Roof screen, if installed on the bolting cycle, can significantly reduce the number of these injuries. As the surface of the roof fails, the screen will have to retain the broken rock without failing or excessive deformation. Welded wire screen is the most common type of screen material used for roof surface control in underground coal mines. The load-deformation characteristics and the load capacity of welded wire screen were evaluated in the laboratory in a specially built test frame. In the frame, the square screen sections were held in place by bolts and bearing plates at the four corners while a center load was applied to the screen. The parameters evaluated included the wire gauge and configuration, the bearing plate loads and bolt spacing. The wire gauge of the tested screen was 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Maximum screen capacities for both load and displacement were developed for each of the wire gauge sizes along with the screen stiffness. This information can be used for screen selection and for the evaluation and determination of screen performance. Injuries due to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are not uncommon in heavy industry like mining. Researchers acknowledged that occupational exposure to ergonomic risk factors is the chief causative factor in the development ofWMSDs. The aim of this study was to perform an ergonomic assessment of musculoskeletal disorders among surface mine workers in India. Standardized Nordic Questionnaire was used to collect subjective response from 500 workers. A stratified random sampling method according to surface mining work activity type was used to obtain the sample. Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire, and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. A response rate of 85% was obtained out of 500 targeted groups. TheWMSDs prevalence for the 12-month period was estimated to be 44.23%. The mean and standard deviation of workers’ age were 41.31and 8.927, respectively. The study has shown that the operators of dumpers, dozers, and graders along with electricians were found to be the most susceptible to developWMSD problems. Among the most affected body parts, back disorder reported the highest. Further, it was found that working with static posture over the longer duration has a significant association with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.020) and bouncing and jarring has also significantly associated with the lower back disorder (with p = 0.023). Similarly, a significant association was found between repetitive work and neck pain (with p = 0.016). The study depicted a significant association between ergonomic hazards and WMSDs, like working with prolonged static posture, bouncing and jarring, and repetitive work.

"Since being reported to the 2012 UMI in Shanghai, the Cook Islands has been steadily developing for the commencement of it Seabed Minerals sector in its large Exclusive Economic Zone which contain a vast and unique Manganese Nodule resource, estimated at 10 billion tonnes1. At the 2013 UMI in Brazil, it was reported that the Seabed Minerals Act had commenced and all the necessary complex Technical aspects of this developmental work was being undertaken. At the 2014 UMI in Portugal, full details of the final developments leading to the opening of the Tender of Exploration Blocks in the Cook Islands EEZ will be presented in a brief but comprehensive method, using Poster displays, Powerpoint and active Website interaction. This will show the drafted Regulations, prepared on best international standards, to address both Licencing and Environmental requirements, to give clarity and security to the Resources Owner, industry and stakeholders. This work in being coordinated by the Cook Islands Seabed Minerals Authority, with the valuable collaboration of many international, regional and national stakeholders, including the Cook Islands NGOs, Marine Resources, Marine Park and National Environment Service."

Developers of advanced mining projects face the challenge of how to craft a “Request for Proposal for a Feasibility Study” that will result in bids that are comparable and will lead to a successful execution of the study. Mining engineering consulting firms are challenged by “Request for Proposals” that may consist of a limited description of the Scope of Services and other items, which could present difficulties in the subsequent financing and/or development of the project. Changes in international disclosure requirements have also changed the landscape on how resources and reserves are reported by introducing new disclosure requirements and concepts such as qualified persons. This paper lays out a strategy for preparing a Feasibility Study “Request for Proposal” based on the experiences of a mining engineering consulting firm working on a diversity of projects around the world, and in light of the recent changes in international reporting standards for reserves.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.
